We had the most wonderful time at From Scratch. We called in to check table availability and were told it would not be a wait on a Friday night for our party of 5, which is what we were hoping for! Once we arrived we were greeted by the most amazing hospitality. Gustavo went above and beyond helping us with the menu, getting to know us and made the most wonderful recommendations. The Braised Brisket sandwich was a favorite along with the Roasted Beet salad and the Margarita Pizza. From Scratch will definitely be added to our dinner rotation. 3 of us came for lunch without reservations about 12:15. The place was busy, but we were seated right away. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. I got the beet salad, but it was a little more greens and not enough beets in my opinion. My iced tea sat empty for a long time before they brought a refill. The pasta dishes were beyond disappointing. The proteins (beef in the stroganoff, chicken in the Alfredo, clams in the butter sauce) were properly cooked -- not overdone, but the sauces we like watery soup. The sauce for the clam pasta was mostly lemon and was quite salty. Two of the salads (mixed berry, honey apple) were tasty, but the house salad was reported as salty. The sourdough bread we ordered as an appetizer had some decent chew, but was pretty flavorless. Adding butter seemed to make it even blander. The whipped apple spread made it good enough to enjoy. The burger was reported as tasty. The pizzas were reported as "OK" and "meh", which for pizza that "won best in state" is worth an eyebrow raise. For what we paid, we felt short-changed. Sweet Potato Fries were fresh and good also, everything else was great so was the waitress, nice with a smile and very helpful with showing us the menu, friendly staff and nice view of surrounding buildings. I keep trying to give this place a chance and every time I get let down. This last time, my bf and I had just the worst experience. Food was cold when it was brought to us. My chicken noodle soup was just broth No Chicken, No Noodles. Wtf! Our server dropped our food and never came back to check on us or to refill our drinks. When she finally did, she said "oh dang I was hoping on making it over here to check on you guys before you finished your food". Which just proves that she dropped her food and just forgot about us. I love restaurants that have a small menu, but everything on it is amazing. This is one of those places! Everything is fresh and flavorful, but I think my favorite thing to get here is a burger. The meat is thick, juicy, and perfectly cooked. It's also quite large! I always end up sharing, along with an appetizer or salad. The food is also brought out to you fairly quickly. The food at From Scratch is actually from scratch and I thought that was just a clever name. I slept on this place, and that was a mistake because their pizza is to die for. The menu is simple but perfected by each dish. I've tried every pizza on the menu and a couple salads and soup and nothing disappoints. The food is is not only consistent--it's consistently delicious. My favorite is a margarita pizza add arugala. But their Salame is also super good. The service is great! We came to Salt Lake on a trip with a bunch of families. We wanted to find a place to have a team dinner and we were so lucky to have the experience of holding it at From Scratch. Let me start with the people...service was top notch...fun, caring, responsive, and hardworking. We got meals and drinks served to 40 of us and it was a meal that felt like care was put into every plate. Kudos to the chef. Let me tell you about the Manager Hernan. The guy is a gentle hearted, honest, and great person to work with to organize. He helped every step of the way all the way through the end, and I can't thank the guy enough. He's an Angel... Food was wow wow wow. I think our group pretty much tried everything on the menu from the tri-tip to the salmon to the salads (trust me that you must have the beet salad) to the pizzas/pastas. Everyone was smiles on the quality of their dish. And I had the burger which was absolutely a must. I would have ordered another one if my pants were one size larger. It was that good. Stopped here to eat since it's across from our hotel. We walked in and saw the wait to be seated sign. There are a bunch of tables and you can see the counter and the cooks behind it. It's a cafeteria style ambiance. We looked to see if anyone worked there, there was a lady at the counter talking to the cooks-she appears to be the only one roaming around. We locked eyes and she says nothing. In fact, she has long conversations with various tables and gives us a stare. Finally, we wait 10 minutes and I wave at her--she tells me from across the room-you ladies will have to wait a few minutes. And then she goes to talk to a guy who walked in and sat down. There's plenty of tables, but we have to wait. Interesting. We wait another 5 minutes and nothing as she decides it's best to hold new conversations with other tables. We decided to leave and the people coming in after us-we could see they were seated immediately. Based on her stare at us, the tone of voice, her choice of words, and personal experience, I feel she intentionally made us stand there--intentionally was not going to seat us--nothing to make her feel that way about us as we just walked in and stood there. We stopped here early one Saturday afternoon - the outside seating was delightful & shaded. As we waited to eat, a couple passed us and said it was worth the wait for the food - noting that they had lived in Italy and the pizza was nearly as good as the original Italian masterpiece. This statement got us very excited & created GREAT expectations, which in retrospect probably wasn't fair. It was just about noon so the place wasn't too busy yet which gave us extra talk-time with the staff who were incredibly kind & accommodating. We ordered the White Out Pizza, the seasonal Berry Salad + Chicken, and a side of fries, because why not? Everything was really tasty - but in all honesty, I was a tad disappointed because I'd heard SUCH amazing things - even reading a favorable review on Salt Plate City! My take: The pizza is very rich & VERY cheesy, maybe a bit overboard? The fries might have been my favorite part, honestly: crisp, a bit sweet, and satisfying beyond expectations. The berry salad was fresh & I would order that again if I could (+ swap bleu cheese for ricotta!). I'm not sure what to make of such an empty restaurant that serves such good food. The easiest parking is in a garage and it does happen to have an interesting location, but to be the only patrons was a little disconcerting. That said, the food was definitely above average and seemed to be a fair price. The beer menu was small but good. Okay so we tried this place on a whim. We were headed to see a show at the Eccles and decided to give this place a try. The food earns this place at least a 4.5 stars however, their detriment is that they only have one server for upwards of 15 tables. We saw him a total of about 3 times, he took our order and dropped off our drinks, brought our appetizer, then dropped off our food and that was it. He also was the host and greeter. So that was a bummer. The atmosphere of the restaurant is clean and bright. Tables are metal so they have a metallic smell to them. But it has a very country chic industrial feel to it. All the food we saw coming out looked awesome. The concrete make it so the sound level in the restaurant gets a bit loud. We ordered the bread appetizer which is AMAZING! Fresh baked bread, fresh butter, and an apple butter We ordered the stroganoff with tri-tip. The flavor or the stroganoff was great, the tri-tip however had a very reheated flavor. We walked into From Scratch on a Saturday evening and were seated right away. The wait staff was on top of it, we had fast, friendly, attentive service. The open kitchen allowed us to see how hard working the cooks are which made us that much more excited for our meals. Our food tasted incredibly light, fresh, and made with love. I haven't cleaned my plate after a meal in a long time but I did here! The brisket sandwich with salad did not disappoint! After we were supposed to go to the rib festivals and they cancelled for rain, we went to this spot. The place is clean. The waitress was nice. It's mostly metal so it felt a little chilly at first. I ordered their most expensive beer, a pint of their "Brainless" Belgium ale. $15. It's almost a 9% beer. Wifey got the shrimp Alfredo, I got the blue bacon burg w fries. After getting my beer, I warmed right up. The chef cooked our food awesomely. The wood fire pizza was worth it to bring for my kids. I'm feeling full and rdy to go now. I will only be back if I'm in the area though, I wouldn't go out of my way because there are so many good burg joints around. They allowed a couple of people to patron their establishment with a bird (a finch). That was pooping everywhere. One of the waiters picked it up and walked it all over the restaurant. I love animals and I understand emotional and service animals are important and can be in restaurants. SALT LAKE CITY, UT: Have been eager to try this fresh Yelpy destination for awhile now as From Scratch has rapidly ascended the SLC culinary rankings. As you would guess from the title, everything is made in house or sourced locally and responsibly. A hipster haven, From Scratch is understated and cool. Informal enough for fun with friends but cool enough for a business gathering. Lots of long Edison bulbs, muted tones, wood and nature hues with repurposed-looking stools and chairs. FOOD: everything is presented well and well made, served up nicely. Butternut Squash Soup (5 stars/$5): This soup is packed with flavor, richness and complexity. Savory, spicy, wonderful. Short Rib Entree (3.5 stars/$17): Tastes exactly like a regular old pot roast and potatoes but with aromatic spices and cute carrots. Mushroom/Goat Cheese Pizza (4 stars): This was a good pizza, about like you'd get at Limone but with better crust. The crust is airy, crisp, dense and chewy. Bread Pudding: This was good, similar to what you might get at Kneaders, tasty but a little dry. I didn't have it with vanilla sauce (they were out) so I can't give a proper rating. read more

With a name like From Scratch, it should come as no surprise that this restaurant focuses on local ingredients and all of their menu items are created in-house, from scratch. If you start with quality ingredients, you should get a quality outcome. That's the philosophy here. And they're executing it pretty darn well. You'll notice that it's not located in the busiest or most obvious of places. Tucked back on Gallivan Avenue, it should be a terrific location in a couple of years when the surrounding developments are full and more businesses move into these shops. For now, it's holding its own on this quiet street that cuts through the corner Gallivan Plaza. And you get plenty of street parking or parking in the One Utah Center, or other lots nearby. Walk in and notice the understated but clean and classy decor. You'll see a long row of bar seating, several 2- and 4- tops, and one large table that seats parties of 12+, or acts as a communal spot for diners. There's a large stone pizza oven in the corner and windows all around. Contemporary. Do peek down the bar area to the other room on the west side to see their imported Austrian flour mill. They're making all their own flour for everything but the pizzas (for that they source from Central Milling in N Utah) and it's an impressive wooden structure. Their menu is simple--several pizzas, a few salads, pasta, a couple of apps, pastas, and a burger. I've sampled almost half of the menu, and have really enjoyed the simplicity but solid execution of everything I've had. First, the pizzas. Their oven fires at a lower temperature than others, so it comes out unique. Don't try to call it New York style, or pizza Napolitano, or any other category. It most resembles the Italian stuff, but because of the lower temp, it's got thicker chew and miniature crunch to the crust. You can't go wrong with any of the toppings, but they're particularly proud of the Whiteout (all white cheeses including the mozzarella they make in house) and white sauce. Pick your poison and go. The salads are fresh and refreshing. The entree size is generous enough, and each has a specific flair. I had the Honey Apple which was sweet, and the beet. I love beets. I love beet salad. This is a beet salad to behold, with golden and red beets and a generous amount of goat cheese with arugula and candied pecans. The pasta was also good, but I only gave it a taste so I need to return to give it a full meal's worth. And then there's the burger. For a place that began as a pizzeria concept, they really surprised me with this burger. It has no business being that good, but I've had two of them this month and I want to go back for more. Perhaps it's the shoestring onions that give it the saltiness, or the smoked cheddar that give it depth, or the shredded lettuce that gives it a cool crunch, or that big, pillowy bun? I don't know, but it all comes together with their house made ketchup and a plate of salty Yukon Gold potato chips (made, you guessed it, from scratch) that puts me over the edge. They recently won a best in state award for that burger, and deservedly so. You get what you pay for, the old adage says. When you're getting house made aiolis and pickles and buns and pastas and cheese, you should pay for it. Most items run $10-13 for lunch and around $15 for dinner (I've yet to try the $17 short ribs for dinner) so it's not so fancy you'll hurt later. Just a bit more than your standard lunch stop. Honestly, though, for the amount of work that goes into each ingredient and thus, each dish, you're getting some quality food for a pretty fair price. For drinkers, you've got local beers, including every brew in Epic's line, to grab and drink. I'm a big fan of the restaurant. I love the concept and so far they've been good. The menu is still pretty small and simple, and I think that was a smart move as they opened to nail the fundamentals. It will be fun to see if they feature a few specials to keep things interesting, and I know they've discussed having more specialty from scratch items once the crowds fill out. Judging from recent lunch crowds and from what I hear about dinners, that may be sooner rather than later. read more

All my friends were so impressed when I posted pictures of the food from here and hashtagged it "fromscratch" because they thought I made the dishes from scratch. I wish! If I could, I would make risotto cake for myself everyday! Risotto is one of my favorite foods and the only way to make risotto better is to deep fry it and eat it with fire roasted bell pepper sauce and arugula! This is the dish I will order every time I visit From Scratch. Next up was the short rib. The first few bites were really good - the meat was so tender it just fell apart when I stuck my fork in and the mashed potatoes complemented it pretty well. However, it was easy to get sick of this dish because the short rib was a little too salty. Last but definitely not least, we had the mushroom pizza! It came with arugula, caramelized onions, mushroom, goat cheese, and mozzarella. This was definitely the best mushroom pizza I've ever had. read more
