Super hard to leave this review because the owner seemed so nice but I have to be honest. You should skip this place. When we arrived we were told to sit anywhere. It took forever to be waited on throughout the entire meal because our server was talking to another worker about tik tok. On top of that, the serving sizes were the smallest I have ever seen. I eat sushi all the time and it was by far the worst sushi I have ever had. It had a pretty funky taste. My boyfriend's came out shaped like an ice cream cone and he was told to eat it with his hands. And then our appetizer (garlic edamame) came out 10 minutes after we were done with our sushi. We need more places like this one in San Diego, True and Traditional Sushi, Not Fancy Fake Infused Sushi. Based on all of the reviews, I was hesitant to come to this place. But I am addicted to sushi and needed my fix. I went in with low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. I ordered yellowtail and salmon rolls and sushi. Both types of fish were fresh and the rice was perfectly done. The owners of the place happened to be in and we're extremely friendly and accommodating. There is definitely a traditional sushi atmosphere. I hate giving bad reviews, especially as someone who has worked in the restaurant business and other customer service businesses before. But my husband and I's overall experience was very bad here. (Writing as a vegan couple.) We went here tonight, a Thursday night. (Oct 18, 2018). There were three other parties when we arrived at 6:15pm: a couple, and two small families. (One party of three and another of four.) I believe only the owner and his wife were working. It appears that she deals with the customers and he does the cooking. Some time after we came in, another party (or person?) entered. I am not sure if they have other staff or not, looks very mom and pop. We ordered the following: seaweed salad, agedashi tofu, a Sapporo and five rolls (one cucumber, two avocado, one veggie, one inari.) For the rolls, we ordered on the Happy Hour sheet because it was before 7:30pm. (This meant half off, not full price.) We ordered within 5 to 10 minutes of sitting down. The first thing we got was my water and my husband's beer. We got them fairly quickly, basically immediately. So far, so good. I also asked if the broths for their udons were vegetarian based and she was kind and told us it was fish broth. About 30 minutes later, I got my salad. 15 minutes or so after that, we got the tofu. The food was okay, normal for vegan food at a sushi/Japanese restaurant. At 7:15pm, we still did not have anything else we ordered. The best part was, even after we gave them the paper with our roll order the woman came back and said "Did you order anything else? What else did you order?" Did she lose our sheet? I handed it to her, and had pointed out the items we wanted on it to make sure she knew what we had marked. I had to make her another one and pointed out the items again just to make sure she had everything right. I would say about 10 to 15 minutes after that, we got about half of the rolls we ordered. We finished those right away. About 15 to 30 minutes after that, we got the rest of our order. This was about 15 minutes or so before we left at 8:15pm. We were then rushed out the door. Basically once we finished all the food, the check was brought out immediately and it felt like we were being shooed out. The couple seemed kind enough for the most part, and I don't know what the other parties ordered and if they had a similar experience. I don't know if the owners maybe cannot afford more help, or if whatever other workers they may have couldn't come in tonight (or it wasn't their shift)? But I've never had to wait so long for food. The food, again, was very average for vegan fair for the type of cuisine this is. The couple, again, were very nice. But everything outside of that was not good. Also to add: they never refilled our drinks or asked if we wanted refills. If you are okay with waiting one to two hours for food, then go for it. But we aren't coming back, and I will certainly not recommend this place to anyone I know (vegan or not). read more

I was expecting bad service and mediocre food. We called at 7:10 pm on the Saturday after Easter, and they were able to get us an 8pm Tepan reservation. They were SO friendly and attentive, we were very impressed. Our order was taken almost immediately, and our table was set and ready as soon as we got there. The cook was amazing, and we had a genuine, great conversation the whole time. He even went to his car and gave my son a lego set he had in his car that was brand new that he collects. Portions were HUGE! The scallops and filet tasted very fresh, and the scallops were large sea scallops like I hoped. We left a large tip as we were very impressed, and can't wait to eat here again. read more

The food is good!!! All the chefs and staffs are Japanese!!! The food must be authentic . All the cut rolls are delicious. Miso soup is very good. Katsu Don is great. Tempura is great. The yellow tail collar is a little dry but it was a decent size. They just forgot to give us rice with one of our meals but it's not a big deal. I want to write a review here so ppl don't get scared away from the old reviews. Besides good food, service seems to be a topic here. I want everyone to be aware that all staffs seem to be not very young. So keep that in mind and expect to get the food like you have your great aunt and uncle cooking for you. I have been here two dozen times (while I lived in Fawnskin). It is owned by an older Japanese couple, and their kids and grand kids help out. There is (or was) a happy hour for sushi, on weekdays. For a while they had (and may still have) a Teppan Yaki grill with about 10 seats around it. This was like a mini knife show... as the chef did his Teppan tricks. The old man who was also the Sushi chef, would go down the mountain twice a week to get fresh fish (and Uni). This was by no mean a top star restaurant, but given that on this 7000 ft elevated mountain where you can't even cook rice or pasta properly because water boils at a lower temperature... this old couple does a good Job with their Japanese food. The sushi here is not the best, but it is what you should order on the top of your list; avoiding the Mexican cooks that fry up all the hot dishes like fish tacos. . The fried things are not super crisp, and the baked fish are always way over cooked. So stick with the sushi cut buy the old Japanese man. And try a few sides for fun, like Oshinko, onigiri, and egg custard. I have had problems here with there service unfortunately. But other than that this is the only Japanese food anywhere up the mountain. In this, it is as good as it gets up here. read more

I rarely review spots but my boyfriend and I came to Big Bear to celebrate my birthday and got in a little later than expected. We were starving and couldn't find any food options open other than a few fast food spots and fuji so we decided to try out fuji. The staff was nice when we walked in and led us to the menus. Since we're in the mountains we figured the fish wouldn't be super fresh so we both got the chicken and rice bowls. We got our food and headed back to our room to eat. We were so hungry we barely looked at the meal before digging in and quickly realizing what we were eating seemed undercooked and very wrong. The so called chicken was fragments of who know what and definitely not properly prepared. I tried to stay optimistic and eat a little as I was starving but one bite I had was so beyond inedible I couldn't go any further. I really have no clue what the f we were eating. We stopped eating the food and I called to ask what exactly we were eating. There was miscommunication and I left it at that. A few hours went by and my boyfriend and I were feeling sicker and sicker. We ended up having to throw up our food just to feel better. If I could only would give no stars. We were driving around looking for a place to eat so we were happy when we found out that Fuji was still open. We decided to dine in instead of taking it to our hotel room. We walk in and there was about 3 tables occupied. We stood in the waiting area for a good while waiting for the hostess to acknowledge us. After about 10 mins she tells us to sit down. We wait for about 20 mins, waiting on menus or anybody to take drink orders. Finally the lady looks at us and tells us just a moment. Another 10 mins roll by, she is now at the front desk taking to go orders of people who are just walking in. She never once came to the table. Finally we decide to just get up and leave. It was recommended and cannot express to you how much we were disappointed. We got Chicken Katy's (which was $9.25) and didn't come with rice. Was literally one breaded chicken tender called chicken katsu and on top of this charged $15 for each sushi roll. I attached a photo of what $30 of sushi looks like here. I'd understand if it was a great experience or even great tasting food, however would not ever recommend this place. We soent $83 worth of food and they didn't even give us rice. Garbage. With lots of vinegar. I take it the 5 star reviews are either fake or people were desperate for sushi up in the mountains. This place was a real bummer and the seared ahi at the bar down the street was much better. Let's talk food. Salmon: delicious. It's very hard to mess up on salmon. It was great and I highly recommend it. If you chose to go here. Tuna: thinly cut. So much so that any remnant of flavor is lost. Striped bass: over priced and chewy Scallops: same quality you would get at an all you can eat place. Yellow tail: delicious. But very thinly cut with a bulging glob of rice underneath. Albacore: over seared, chewy. Not much to like here. California rolls: not even rolled properly, rice is extremely soggy with a sickening vinegar flavor. I didn't think it was possible to have bad imitation crab. But mix dry with barley any and you have yourself a miracle that is a nasty California roll. "Premium rolls." Why charge $14 for something that isn't any good? Why charge that price for fish cut thin as paper? I know why... Because they are the only sushi place in town. I didn't even get started on the service but long story short, terrible. Drink refill are scarce. And it takes forever to bring out the food. Expect the table members to be eating one at a time. Overall regretful. And I feel like I was robbed out of my hard earned money sampling all their crappy nigiri. read more

Excellent. Read all the reviews but really wanted Japanese food so decided to give it a try. Overall though, we'll be back. Yes, the wait is considerable. That's probably the most frustrating for most people but bc we read the reviews first we were prepared to wait. But the experience while we were waiting (about 30min) was pleasant and our sushi chef was really friendly and conversational. Another review also mentioned that this is a seemingly family owned restaurant and we got the same vibe. We were lucky to meet the back of house staff who looked like my grandparents, and I'm not young! So they just can't move fast anymore, but let's be nice people and appreciate their effort. We ordered a variety of sushi, rolls, and a donburi (rice bowl) and the taste was good and fresh for all. If any complaint the miso soup was a tad watery for our personal taste, but any miso soup lover can agree that's a very personal preference. Presentation was really nice on all dishes and it was thoughtfully packed for us since we ordered to-go. Pricing was fair, the restroom was very clean, and the kids were happy. That's a win!! And for the only Japanese restaurant in Big Bear they could probably get away with much worse but I'm grateful they don't think that way. We came to this restaurant a little before 5pm to place a take out order for our two very tired teens that had boarded all day at the resort. We explained to the waitress, when she took our order that we had planned on taking our kids to the cabin with their dinner and we would return right to enjoy a nice sit down dinner. We were told that it would take 15 to 20 minutes so we waited in the two tables right in front of the sushi bar and register. I asked after 25 minutes how it's going with our order and the waitress assured us it would be soon. 25 minutes after that I said to her, "If our order hasn't been started yet we probably should just go" she went back and yelled out loud "Has the to go order been started yet?" To my surprise it had not... that's not what I wanted to hear! We waited almost one hour and the order was just ignored even though it was obvious to them that we were there waiting for it. The sushi chef did prepare the California rolls very quickly when we first placed the order and they gave them to us at no charge to try and appease the situation, I have to say they were very good. We could not understand how they just let us sit there and not fill that very simple order of two Teriyaki chickens and rice, especially since the restaurant did not appear that busy... terrible service. I think their food is good, at least the California rolls were but be aware if you want take out... it would be better to sit in the sushi bar and order directly with the sushi chef.
