Maybe its the sushi rice. Maybe its the quality of the fish served. Maybe its both. I am an avid sushi fan, but this place tastes different, and not in a good way. I really have enjoyed Japanese Food and culture in Japan and recommend you go if given the chance. I have been to Fuji Yama several times and my impression is always the same. Its different. It just doesn't taste right. If I had to guess I would say the rice is the first problem (difference) Whatever, the taste here does not taste as good as other venues I go to in Grand Rapids. I would choose not to go back Try Sushi Ko, Sukara, or Osaka (1/2 off on rolls Monday and Wednesday.) They are just better. read more

Service is HORRIFIC. 30 minutes after being seated, all I had in front of me was a green tea and a soup. Nobody explained how the all you can eat deal worked and then took my menu before I even ordered. It's more like "all you can wait" vs "all you can eat." Have not seen my server in 25 minutes. Being a sushi fan, I feel I only have a few choices in Grand Rapids. If I want quantity over quality, Ming Ten fits the bill, but you have to pick the time to go just right so the goods are fresh. Sometimes, buffets feel like standing in line at a prison cafeteria and it's somewhat chaotic. Then, for the tea and crumpets crowd, there's the pricy Tokyo Grill, which is first class sushi, but your wallet will be much lighter when you leave. Goldilocks picked the middle option and usually, so do I. Fujiyama is much classier than Ming Ten, but less pricy than Tokyo Grill. I find their sushi to be excellent , if not fully superb. My only advice is to avoid the Sunday all-you-can eat sushi because it's about double the price as the same option on Saturday. They have Sapporo beer on tap, which is pretty solid and the atmosphere works for date night. I eat here a lot and I wish I tried it a few years ago. I usually put a whuppin' on the all-you-can-eat sushi since I eat like a starved great white shark, but I tip well, so they've never thrown me out. read more

Okay, you can't really judge much since I have served here for 2ish/a little over 2ish years, mostly hibachi and the occasional dine in side. I have, though, worked at many asian cuisine/hibachi places for almost 4 years, both on the west side and east side of the state (I am from the metro Detroit area) including Osaka's Steakhouse in Shelby Township (which is equivalent to Benihana over there) and Leong's on 21 mile which has won best in the Detroit area for many years and is placed 8th best asian restaurant in the country. I am half Chinese and half "American" (aka, white). My mom (who is from China) has served in Asian restaurants in the metro Detroit area until I was about 13 - I grew up on food she would bring home, like white rice with that thick brown gravy. I loved that as a kid. I don't think anyone knows "American" Asian Cuisine more than I do. Anyways, when it comes to Fuji Yama's food, trust me, I'm not saying this because I work here, or because I'm getting some sort of bonus from my boss. I can honestly say, comparing to other asian restaurants I've ever been to, that they have good quality food. From the sushi, to the hibachi, to the Sesame Chicken, to even the martinis that Slim makes at the bar - it's all fresh, the recipes of the menu items are all thought out, and the hibachi cooks HOOK you up with large proportions. And they don't use a single drop of MSG, which is the key ingredient to most Asian food. NOT to dish out Osaka's in Shelby I worked at over the summer, but I was very disappointed in the sushi there, and how expensive it is for hibachi for half the proportion Fuji gives, especially since this place is suppose to be one of the best hibachi places on the East Side of Michigan. Yes, depending on which chef you get, it can make the difference, but the quality of the hibachi grill and the quality of the food (noodles, rice, vegetables, meat, seafood, etc) makes a bigger impact. Being a good chef only goes so far. My mom, who is the pickiest eater you will EVER meet in your entire life when it comes to dining out/asian restaurants, LOVES Fuji Yama. I am forced to dine there every time she comes and visits me (I go to college here). I've brought one of my Greaty Uncles who was visiting from China (who, mind you, has had the best sushi from Japan) even raved about this place. He said that the sashimi was very good quality, especially for....here's the term again... "American" Asian Cuisine. So yes, if you are thinking about having some good ass hibachi/sushi/thai/chinese/japanese/whatever, go to Fuji Yama. Trust me, I grew up on this sh*t. Maru sushi is great too. I love to try lots of different types of sushi but it is so expensive. We were thrilled to find that they offer an "all you can eat" option on several evenings at a very affordable price. We were able to share and try so many. Great option for a small group! Service was top notch and food quality was very good. I only have positive comments. read more

Update: Went here tonight and it took 3 hours to get through dinner. If it weren't for my friend's upbeat attitudes I would have left. Service was terrible and no one seemed to care one bit. Our orders were constantly screwed up, and food kept coming out at random times so that everyone would be eating their entrees while some people hadn't even gotten their appetizers. That was after moving us out of the hibachi area because apparently they wont let you sit there unless you order hibachi, even if you are with a group who 90% of them are ordering it. (We've done it plenty of times before, but the server said they've changed the rules. No warning, notice, or signs posted about this). It was a huge mess, no management in sight to even answer questions, offer explanations, or give apologies. We used to make this a monthly trip, but after this incompetence, I wouldn't return. I had a party of 7 people, and called ahead to make reservations and make sure things were okay so this WOULDN'T happen. But, again, they didn't seem to care. read more

I think you would be surprised by Fuji Yama, which bills itself as an Asian Bistro with full service Asian Cuisine including Japanese, Chinese, Thai. Each time I get take-out or dine-in, the service is top-notch and the food is far above other area Asian places in quality. Good cuts of beef or chicken are used in their dishes, versus other places I've tried in GR. I'm not a sushi-connoisseur by any means, but when I've had it in their marvelous Bento-box meals, it's fresh, light and delicious. It's worth a try if your in the neighborhood - just be aware that the hibachi action gets a bit loud in there - not much sound deadening at all. read more

This was probably one of the worst dining out experiences I've had in awhile. It was 4th of July and no one was open besides them. We called ahead, they said they were open, and had room for two to just walk in. So we did. Upon arrival we were told it was going to be 5 minutes - we looked around and only saw maybe 6 people in the whole restaurant. 5 minutes turned into 10 until someone finally came to get us. Then we sat at the table for 10 minutes before we saw our server. We both ordered sprite and they were both warm and watered down. Both times. All we ordered was sushi and it took quite awhile for that too, and honestly wasn't worth the wait. And come the next morning my boyfriend and I couldn't stay off the toilet. I'd give 0 stars if I could. We were visiting from out of town and drove across town to come here for dinner because my kids wanted hibachi. It was crowded and I was told there would be a 25-minute wait. OK, no problem. Forty minutes later we were still waiting so I asked how much longer it would be. The girl flipped through the list looking as if my name was not on there, then told me she'd check on it right away. Meanwhile, people who came in after us were being seated until we were the only family left sitting in the waiting area. This was nearly an hour after we arrived. At this point I gave up. Typically, my husband and I sit at the Sushi Bar here. I have never been there for the Hibachi. We love the sushi and esspecially love the all-you-can-eat offering. We mainly get this and have never been dissapointed. The Sushi chefs are always friendly and the servers are always polite. Crab rangoons are very good too-not greasy like other places I've tried. Just ate here with my fiancé and we were really excited for some sushi at a decent All You Can Eat Price. I noticed that the rice they use is not Japanese rice so the sushi tasted extremely off. In my miso soup, I was jipped on the ingredients normally in miso soup (dry seaweed, tofu, leek). Midway through our second order we both suddenly felt sick. I went to poop and vomit, he went to the bathroom and there was another man throwing up, and I'm STILL going to the bathroom every five minutes. Ridiculous. read more

I went there with my husband for dinner and ordered two types of rolls, they came out on a beautiful display. The rolls were delicious and so was the calamari, but not the best we've ever had. Prices were on the higher end so i think we paid more for the presentation than the food. read more

I went there for sushi because me friend said they had the best sushi in Grand Rapids and it was pretty good quality sushi. I had the sweetheart roll and she had the crunch roll. The sweetheart roll was decently sized and was pretty good, not the best I've ever had but certainly nowhere close to the worst. And my friend had the crunch roll, hers was huge and way better than mine and if I went back I'd get that. We tried this new restaurant in the old Famous Dave's Barbecue Restaurant on the East Beltline last week. Very new, great decor, varied menu. We went for the traditional Chinese fair for 2 orders and the third was Thai - Pad Thai. Sadly, all three were mediocre. The Pad Thai was weak and did not have much flavor. Mongolian Chicken and Mongolian Beef were the other orders - my companions were not impressed. The hot tea was unusual, had a smoky flavor. We really wanted to like this place - it is a great location and has been redone very successfully. The Japanese side would be worth a try or stick with the sushi - as the above reviews suggest. Poor experience tonight for a birthday dinner. We made reservations for six. Our party was spilt at one table with two grills. Our food was served at different times. They rushed us through and the chefs didn't spend time entertaining the guests. We didn't get a chance to tell them we were celebrating a birthday. And they brought us boxes to go while we were still eating. I know that it's probably more busy during the holidays, but for the price this experience was not worth it. Although the the food was good and the "show" decent, the establishment would not take my gift certificates that were not issued by them and they had expired. They were paid for in cash by a friend of mine and given to me as birthday present. The "manager" (we know she wasn't the manager) as she was the hostess and she told us that! Since the certificates were purchased with cash, which doesn't expire, the certs should not expire. Not going back - ever. We will go to Ichiban instead! They got rid of AYCE; in other words: no longer supporting all you can eat sushi. Other reviewers here say it's "understandable". It really isn't. Fuji Yama was the only place between GR, Kzoo and Lansing to serve same restaurant quality sushi in an AYCE setting. They had a monopoly and charged $27 for it. I still gladly went. Come visit the SF Bay Area, where a sushi place on every corner makes for fierce competition. Where everything else is twice the price, compared to the Midwest, including costs of owning a business, $18 will get you AYCE with better quality that Fuji Yama ever had. This standard is apparently very possible, if the restaurant understands the value of catering to customers. There is nothing "reasonable" or "understandable" about Fuji Yama's decision to slash AYCE. That just indicates priorities misguided by poor customer appreciation. read more

My husband and I decided to hit up this place as I have had a craving for good sushi ever since moving out here from Vancouver, Canada almost three years ago. Fuji Yama did not disappoint! The decor was excellent. Sleek, yet inviting and comfortable. I found myself looking around in admiration -- the hibachi 'rooms' especially look great from what I saw. We sat at the sushi bar and were treated to complimentary seafood salads while we waited -- delicious! Topped with sesame and really subtle in flavor. Definitely something that I would be willing to try again. As far as actual ordering goes, we got the sushi boat for two. It comes with miso soup and a garden salad with ginger dressing to start. Now, usually at sushi restaurants I find that the ginger dressing is overpowering. I can honestly say that this wasn't the case this time around -- easily the best ginger dressing that both my husband and I have ever had. They didn't skimp on the seaweed and tofu in the miso soup either, for which we were grateful. A very pleasant start to a very pleasant meal. When we got out boat, the presentation was excellent. Not only that, but every bit of it was delicious. The only thing that I could wish for was some kind of picture list or some-such of what it was that we were eating. Much of it would be obvious to those of us who are sushi regulars, but it would be excellent to be able to easily pinpoint what certain things are that could be ordered (or avoided, depending on if there was something that you found less enjoyable) next time. The boat was just shy of $50, which can seem expensive for a meal for two, but it was one that I recommend. The value is actually quite excellent, as well. The price for the overall soup/salad/boat is quite a bit cheaper than it would be to have ordered all of the pieces individually. It was also more than enough food for two and we ended up taking much of it home and enjoying it for lunch the next day. Service was great, but we were there at an odd time -- maybe 4:30-ish in the afternoon. I have no complaints about the service, but we were the only visible customers in there at the time. I'd definitely have to go back again during a busier service to get a more accurate picture. Maybe I'll try the hibachi next time. It'll be hard to pass up the opportunity for such fantastic sushi though. read more

Great place with great food. Hibachi is super and All you can Eat Sushi is well worth the money... The only bad thing is that you can't combine the two. So if part of your group wants Hibachi and the other AllYouCanEat, you will have to choose between the two. All food tastes great, portions are generous and there is a large variety of food to choose from. Highly recommend. read more

Fuji Yama does 1/2 of sushi on Mondays. My wife and I work close by and stopped in for lunch two weeks in a row. The sushi was tasty and had good variety. However on the Tuesday after both visits we both got sick. We are usually pretty healthy and it was not pretty. The first week we thought it might be something else, but consecutive weeks sold us. Many time restaurants have "specials" on Mondays because they use leftover food from the weekend. I broke my vow of not doing this because it was cheap and tasty. The wait staff is unfortunately not great, it's very hard to understand them sometimes even though they are usually pleasant to talk to.
