Alright, I work at McCombs making the AT&T Center my home away from home. As such, I have had a chance to eat a few lunches at Gabriel's Cafe. First off, this is a great spot because there always seems to be a table available. Also, way better food than you can find this close to campus. I always get a salad as Gabriel's makes delicious salads. While I thought it was a bit pricey, the ginormous plate of salad I was presented with more than made up for the cost. Last time I went I enjoyed a delicious pecan whisky cocktail that really made my day. It was a perfect pairing with my salad that happened to include pecans as well. The staff at Gabriel's is top notch. They always take time to talk to me and are happy to provide great suggestions on what is good that day. Nice, quiet space to enjoy a good meal. I highly recommend Gabriel's as an alternative to the fast food that seems to permeate campus. read more

Located inside of the AT&T Conference Center on the UT Campus, I've been here twice for different work lunches. The lunch menu consists of a handful of different salads, appetizers, sandwiches, and tacos. I have had the garden salad with chicken, and it was very well done, albeit a tad bit on the pricey side. The chicken was perfectly grilled and seasoned, and the salad toppings were fresh. My coworkers have ordered the burgers as well as the turkey melt with fries, and they all have loved everything. The atmosphere here is relaxed, but also nice enough to where you can come in for a work meeting or a casual lunchtime meet up with friends and family around town. Definitely give it a shot if you're around campus and are wanting a sit-down lunch. read more

Three coworkers and I stayed three nights at the AT&T Executive Education & Conference Center for a conference. In that time, we ate at Gabriel's 5 times and we enjoyed every meal we had there. Here are the dishes I can personally vouch for: - Smoked BBQ sandwich, with brisket, onion, pickles, cole slaw, brioche bun, and a side of house chips - this was my first taste of real Texas BBQ, which may be a crime to some, but it was delicious! The brisket was tender and had a mellow, smoky flavor. The cole slaw had a mild flavor and nice crunch, which I appreciated because I don't like it when it has too much vinegar. The house chips deserve their own paragraph, because they were fantastic! Thick cut, great crunch; none of us left any chips on our plates. - 13 1/2 hour Mesquite-Pecan-Hickory Smoked Brisket with Stout-Molasses Bourbon BBQ sauce and a side of corn casserole - Again, the brisket was excellent, both sweet and smoky. The portion was quite generous, and so I can also tell you that the brisket is equally wonderful as a cold leftover. The corn casserole was the only downside to any of my meals at Gabriel's; it was fairly dry and did not have much flavor. Some more salt, pepper, and milk or cream would have done wonders. I don't usually add salt to anything, but the corn casserole needed it. With this dinner, I also got their Texas Sunset cocktail. Unfortunately, I don't remember what was in it, but it was very good. - Sweet Potato Tots - made with parmesan, truffle oil, and maple mustard, served with habanero aoli - These tots were great and tasted like french toast. They tasted more sweet than savory to me. - Chorizo & Charred Corn Hush Puppies - These were just the right amount of moist and spicy, with a slight smoky flavor. - Dip Trio with Tortilla Chips, Fire Roasted Salsa, Queso Blanco, and Guacamole - My whole table enjoyed the dip trio. All three dips tasted fresh, and even the queso was light enough to leave us satisfied without feeling heavy. - Specials - Grilled Cheese with Tomato Cheese Soup - I don't remember all the details of these dishes, but I know there were like 3 cheeses and gouda was one of them. The soup was creamy without being heavy, perfect for dipping the grilled cheese. The bread for the grilled cheese was crunchy the way a toasted sandwhich should be, and the cheese oog'ed out like God intended melted cheese to oog. Service was great, especially considering we had to divide our checks every time, even having to have a separate check just for alcohol. The staff was always courteous, quick, and happy to oblige. Sports played on the 5 or 6 tvs and the bar seemed to hop at night. The majority of customers were professionals, which is probably because of the location, but it would be appropriate for families, too. I'm sure there are solid arguments for leaving the hotel to go find "real Texas food," but Gabriel's is fantastic, upscale restaurant with really great food. If you're limited by time or circumstance, you still can enjoy a great dining experience in Austin. read more

Constantly, I've eaten there multiple, multiple times, every home game for the ladies volleyball program. There is never enough servers, slow in drink orders, heaven help if you need a refill. The food is always slow in coming. It's the same song and dance all the time. Today went in, was told can only order beer and soft drinks, as usual, no bartender. 6 of us, one order didn't get made, it was a salad, it took 13 minutes for it to come out. After the rest of us ate, the person eating their salad by themselves. It's always the same story, we are short handed, not enough help, blah blah. The service is slow. Then they add 20% because of 6 of us. The server didn't refill drinks, I had to walk up to bar to get it refilled, both water and a soda. The server forgot to enter a meal. Then had the audacity to want 20%. The management has to be one of the worse I've seen in a while. They don't care, it's obvious, because it's always below par service. Food is pricey, simple, and pretty good. It's conveniently located right next to campus and both the undergraduate and graduate business school buildings (McCombs and Rowling Hall). There is both outdoor and indoor seating, both of which are very nice, with a full bar. Service is usually pretty solid; they hire friendly staff. Business can be slow during the day, but it's popping when there are events in town at the AT&T center. read more

we like carillon so figured we'd give the little sister a chance. I read all teh reviews and was prepared for an iffy experience. I don't like to be a victim of the server. servers are humans and they can forget, ok, some people just suck at everything they do. but if I am being forgotten, I won't just sit there and pout about it, let my meal be ruined. if I need something and I'm not getting it, I'll get up and take action. if I need to find the manager, I will. but it rarely comes to that. I've worked in many restaurants and I can usually find the server station. somebody is usually near to fill my needs, or I can just get it myself. example: when our food came but we had no silverware, I could see the server's station right there so I got up and got the necessary forks and napkins. and when we needed a togo box and our server was MIA, I grabbed some other server who was just standing around chatting to some other server... they got the box for us. we ate on the patio, not many other people in the place. it's often the case that you get forgotten about when there is almost nothing going on, ironic. I will say that the servers were all very nice, accommodating and friendly. the food, those truffle tater tots are delicious! as were the sweet potato fries. we also enjoyed the greek salad and the pork tacos. no complaints about quality, portion or taste of the food. you should know that happy hour ends at 6pm (not 7) and check your bill. ours had this odd line item "Texas $4 Iced Tea: $5" yep, a drink that is named Texas $4 Iced Tea rang up at $5! our server was as perplexed by this puzzle as we were. but they got it corrected. also, they don't necessarily validate parking here (like carillon). you can prepay for your parking at gabriel's at a discounted rate. I think we paid $4.30 to get our parking stub stamped in the restaurant. read more

The shiny, new conference center has a fancy but low-key bar and restaurant that is just getting up to speed. The menu ranges from wings and flatbread pizza, to caeser salad and burgers - standard bar fare with a nice presentation. They have beer, wine, and a full range of liquor. The day we were there they had big bowls of handcut potato chips on the bar - I don't know if this will be an ongoing occurrence but even if it's not, they were good and are worth ordering if you are in a salty snack mood. The space is well-lit and offers an excellent view of the UT Tower. For those with more sporting interests, there is a large flat screen tv situated behind the bar - it's nice because it is available for those who want to watch but its not obtrusive to the whole restaurant. We ordered wings in two flavors - buffalo hot and chinatown sweet chili. Surprisingly, it was the chinatown that were very, very hot. We ordered a cheeseburger cooked to medium that definitely ended up being more than medium but the bun, the fancy ketchup, and the steak-cut fries that seem to have parsley embedded more than made up for the overcooked burger ... we had two rounds of sangria - well make that three - the first was really good and the second was too watery so we sent it back and had a very good replacement brought out to the table promptly. We talked with the manager about how the menu is expanding item by item and how they hope to start offering happy hours and other events. I recommend giving Gabriel's a try because I think that once they get everything worked out, we won't see the food and drink snafus. My partner and I did not get any food here as we had just had dinner at Freedmen's but I wanted to stop in to see what it was all about and enjoy a glass of wine on our last night in town. I wanted a glass of bubbles, but instead opted for the $5 rose on special because my credit card was pretty much on fire after a long weekend in Austin. It was decent. My partner had a glass of red that he liked but I found dull and sweet. There weren't many people at the bar except some international business-types and a sad-looking couple eating dinner. I don't think I would eat there unless there was a storm keeping me from walking to any of the nearby restaurants that offer what I imagine to be much more worthwhile Austin fare. read more

My department's graduate recruitment made an impromptu stop here following a weather-related cancellation of our original plans. While the staff was clearly caught off guard by the large influx of people, they were more than accommodating to our seating needs. I suspect that we were probably better behaved than many of the student groups that frequent the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center. Drinks here are a little more expensive than typical Austin, but it is a nice restaurant in a very nice hotel. There are daily happy hour (4-7pm) deals that are not well-advertised online. Wednesday has $7 Mexican Martinis, Thursday has $5-7 glasses of wine and Friday has $10 pitchers of beer. read more

I stayed at the hotel this past week, and got in kind of late Monday night, so since they were the only ones serving food and the game was on, I figured I would try them. I might have considered giving them 2.5 stars if I could but definitely not 3 stars. Food first. It is what you come to expect from a hotel bar in terms of food. The Guacamole was good but I hate it when restaurant put lettuce under things to give the appearance they are giving you more! It is so annoying!!! The chips were pretty good actually. I also ate as the bar tender recommended, their best dish, the turkey BLT. I feel bad if that is their best dish as I don't want to find out what the rest are like. The sandwich was by no means bad, but it was memorable. I think it said it had avocado, but you could barely taste it. The best parts was the waffle fries that were pretty good. On to drinks. They have a very limited beer selection. I think only 4 on tap and of those only 2 local beers. That was a little disappointing, but it is a hotel after all. The biggest disappointment however, was when I heard the waiter come to the bar and ask the bartender what a Tom Collins was. It being one of the only liquor drinks I will drink, I know exactly was goes in it. I then heard the bartender tell the waiter, very confidently by the way, it was Vodka and grapefruit juice. I mean, that's not even close. You can't be a bartender at a nice hotel or anywhere reputable for that matter and not know what a Tom Collins is. At least get the Gin part right! Funny thing is the drink never came back, which proof people will drink anything the bar sends, even if it is way off. Or maybe this is a Texas thing were a Tom Collins is not a Tom Collins, but I highly doubt it. Overall, this is your typical hotel bar. Not very crowded ever, food is mediocre and drinks are OK. Everything is a bit overpriced and servers / bartenders are not very knowledgeable although nice. Sad, because the hotel is pretty nice. read more

I have to agree with the other reviewers who commented about the terrible behavior of some of the staff. We arrived after closing (we never checked their hours) this Friday night and peeked in - two of the staff waved at us like immature teenagers. Found out later that we visited about 90 minutes after closing, leading one to wonder if they'd been hitting those delicious infused drinks we never touched. I can stand someone giving me a "we're closed" signal if we try a place after closing. But immaturity like that makes me wonder what else is getting "infused". read more

I just hosted a small meet and greet event for about 20 people at Gabriel's. We set it up last minute and Michael was super helpful in getting everything ready for us. They set up a small buffet for us with a few tables so people could mingle. We had some snacks and deserts and they were delicious. Will definitely be back for more events like this! I really want to like this place but every time we go it is the same issue with super slow and sometimes inefficient service. I have been in this place at least 10 times as my parents stay here for home UT games and I drive over to meet them before the games so we can get a drink and a bite to eat. Every time it has taken well over an hour to get from sit down to a drink to a check... sometimes longer. The food is OK but overpriced and more times than not is cold by the time it comes out. Drinks come out at random times, even when they are ordered together. The last time we were there it took close to 20 mins to get a drink and the waitress stated she forgot to even put the order in. I really wish there were either better options by the stadium. Or that Gabriel's would staff this place better on game days. They know the place will be packed and yet there are never enough staff. read more

Located in the AT&T Conference Center on UT's campus, Gabriel's is a great, underrated spot. I would highly recommend the tacos, tortilla soup and the tandoori chicken sandwich. The atmosphere is a classy UT bragging vibe but I love it. Plus, the staff messed up with a large group I was in one time, but after that they really went out of their way to fix the situation and we've been going back ever since. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in at Gabriel's for lunch after poking around the Blanton Museum. Definitely an above average restaurant for a hotel. The truffle tater tots were off the charts ("best tots ever" according to the sig-o) and the butter lettuce salad was lovely. Flavor could have been intensified across the board - but then again, they are trying to mollify the traveling pallet, so they can't go too far off the reservation. The item that knocked this from a four down to a three star was my adult beverage. Their house Paloma is made with jalapeño infused tequila and grapefruit juice - sounded relish! But, unfortunately, it really fell flat - I didn't even have to fight off my dining companion to drink it. Where was the fizz of a traditional paloma? Or, that hint of sweetness to set off the spice of jalapeño and the tart of grapefruit? I just couldn't recover. I'll go here again - but will definitely stick to the vino. read more

Gabriel's saved me on a day when, for some reason, I couldn't settle on decent brunch spot (I know, right? weird.) But Gabriel's was the perfect laid-back vibe for a mid-afternoon Saturday - cool, sunny, and just sophisticated enough. And who doesn't want to hang out at a bar on a late Saturday afternoon? In all honesty, I'd already perused and coveted the menu, and on that particular Saturday I wanted tacos. Now being gluten-free isn't really THAT big of a deal these days, a mild annoyance at most, but get this: I also avoid cow dairy. High-maintenance, I know, and as a former server, I've been there, I've HATED waiting on people like me. But the staff at Gabriel's? Didn't even bat an eyelash. No cheese on the tacos and corn tortillas, but go ahead with the goat cheese on the salad? No problem. They made sure that the food I got was safe and delicious without making me feel like I was being a diva. Seriously delicious. And then in particular I'm going to rave about the garlic fries. Now, I grew up going to Candelstick/At&t/PacBell Park eating the Gilroy-brand Garlic Fries that are more garlic than fry and I will tell you that I am not a fan of garlic fries. I like garlic and I like fries but more often than not, garlic fries are more garlic than fry. But at Gabriels? The perfect balance: beautifully fried french fries with the essence and heart of garlic, without making you feel like you should quarantine yourself for the rest of the night. Beautifully and, might I say, artfully done. And if you're there for dinner? Try the bib lettuce salad for a starter. Maybe it's just that I'm partial to thin, flaky Brussels sprouts leaves, bib lettuce, and goat cheese, but I thought it was absolutely delightful. read more

Disappointmemt reigns Supreme in this place. Service can be very strange. Many trips here and never any satisfaction. On the latest trip, ordered a rose which apparently was sitting in a glass already and a tiny pour to begin with. Tasted a but to acidic so pointed that out to the staff and asked when bottle was opened.... No one knew but they insisted the wine was probably okay. Yeah no. oh well... In short on someone else's dime maybe drink a straight shot but on your own, take a cab and go elsewhere. read more

We were staying at the hotel adjacent to Gabriel's and needed something asap after driving for so long from Houston. We decided to pop in Gabriels to grab a quick beer and food before hitting the pool. There were 3 of us, and we immediately sat at a high top bar table. We were greeted by a 20's ish looking guy who seemed a bit stoned to be honest. The staff in the place in general seemed like they all just rolled out of bed. We all ordered beers, and within 2 minutes he came back to me and asked, what did you order again? I had the crab cake sandwich, which was awful, frozen, and the mayo or tarter or whatever was on it went bad. It was served warm (the mayo was, not the crab cake) and I was scared I was going to get sick. My friends both had the make your own taco plate, which was very strange. The chicken looked so questionable and rubbery that neither one of my friends wanted to eat it. It's sad because the hotel was sold out that weekend (Labor Day) so I can imagine they see a fair bit of traffic, but I wouldn't eat there again if you paid me. They ended up taking off the sandwich, but $50+ for the rest of the food and 3 beers was way too much for the quality of food and service. It's strange because later on we went to the place across from it (still in the hotel) and it was like we were in a different place. Seriously, Gabriel's step it up. read more

After 15 mins I simply walked out. Why waste your money on leasing this space if you don't want to serve food? Place only had 5 people in it when I walked in, now I know why. We checked the hours on the website of this place this evening. Kitchen closes at 11, it said. Made a plan for a movie and dinner at this place afterward. The snarky "hostess" was pulling the door closed at 10pm and smirked as she chirped "holiday hours!" I reminded her their website said kitchen closes at 11. She shrugged her shoulders, gave a wide insincere smile, and locked the door in our face. I understand holiday hours and all that but the attitude and "service" we suffered was something expected from a fast food joint at close of business on a school night. read more

Being Labor Day and having a longish layover. There really wasn't any place to get a bite to eat. The airport is rather expensive so I tried Gabriel's. the fried chicken sandwich wasn't bad it was kind of small french fries were good crispy warm. And I had a margarita I just found out it was a little bit pricey for lunch$20. I was kind of stuck going here I don't know that I'd go again unless I was stuck doing so. I'm also tired and cranky from work. So maybe I will try it again the service was phenomenal. read more

The food is ok. All prices are medium . I'm not a fan of the food here. The chef seems to be trying to make Texas and Tex/mex into gourmet. There was cabbage and radishes (raw)in my tortilla soup but no avocado, crema or pico. I had a loaded bake d potato the night before and it might have had a teaspoon of white cheese 3-4 crumbles of bacon, 3-4 pieces of green onion and if there was any butter I did not find it. I was told there would be sour cream but sadly there was not. So basically plain potato for $6. Not very busy either of 9pm on a Saturday night. read more

I have been here a few times, it is located close to the UT towers and the Business school. The atmosphere is very relaxing, they have TVs with sports and nice couch to relax with a drink. I have only had burgers here, although they always ask "how would you like this cooked" I always got well done burgers, but I have to say the bun is fantastic, so are the frys. The service is great, but, if you need to split the check you have to do it yourself and the waiter won't do it for you. I found that a little annoying. They gave us one check, and we had to write our name and card details and amount on the back. read more

I had food here late night about 10 minutes prior to closing. I ordered the shrimp cocktail. It was just okay. The shrimp was good, but I didn't really like the sauce. It reads that it is spiked and I could taste the alcohol. The flour tortilla strips were excellent. The bartenders were very friendly. And I would definitely go back again and try another tentree in the future. read more

Reading some of the less flattering reviews I have to wonder if those people are just unhappy in life. I'm very happy with this cafe over the course of three days during a conference. There weren't any games on so it wasn't that crowded. I was helped by at least five different employees and all were attentive and friendly. The menu has a decent variety to it and the prices kept me easily within budget. The salads are good, the sandwiches are good, the garden pasta was good but it's enough for three people. The southwest chicken tortilla soup should not be missed. Once the food was ordered it came hot and fast and I was back on my way. Gabriel's is a super convenient option in the hotel that is worth trying. read more

We were pretty desperate by the time we found Gabriel's on New Year's Eve as everywhere else was booked solid. The ambiance was surprisingly nice for a bar. Even though we were told by the Carillon host that it's a sports bar, it was relatively quiet and relaxing, which we preferred. Unfortunately, the food experience was not uniform at all. The salmon entree I ordered was excellent (though a bit overpriced at $25 since it came with buttered baguette as the potato/carbohydrate), but the chicken wings my boyfriend got were dry and awful... the worst he said he'd ever had (and I had to agree when I tasted them). I don't understand how the food quality could be that inconsistent in one evening. Oh well, I would probably go back as I thought the menu overall was very interesting. It was nice that there was table service; our waiter was attentive and the service pretty quick. read more

This place has some major problems to work out. My husband and I have tried eating there three times before going to an event at the Conference Center and each time have left feeling very disappointed, whether by the lack of service or the quality of the dishes we ordered. A recent example --- I ordered a grilled turkey pannini with brie cheese. I expected a gooey, warm sandwich that would melt in my mouth. What I got was more like a bread sandwich. Huge chunks of bread like Texas toast; instead of a pile of moist shaved turkey, they had slapped on a portion of turkey which at one time might have been moist but they grilled it before putting it on the bread so it was dried out and tasteless. After removing the bread and setting it to one side, I searched for the brie. Whatever they put on there, it was pretty tiny. So, a word of warning: don't order this sandwich. read more

I've been to Gabriel's a couple of times now and I always leave in a most delightful food coma. The staff that I've met (Pete, Colin, Alex) are always on their game and go out of their way to make sure my hangover/hunger/whatever other ailment I have is satiated by the time I leave. And the food? Oh, the food! I'm a huge fan of the Carillon and you can definitely taste the same kitchen on the more casual side of Gabriels. Flashbacks of brussel sprouts, fish and chips, and the pork belly keep me going through the days (bring back the pork belly or I will begin a protest!). 6 stars for being open for lunch on Saturdays! Overall a great, casual, if not hidden-away spot for some libations and delicious food. read more
