We've been coming to Gaburi since they opened so this review is coming super late despite us going there quite often. I love the bone-in chicken and fried corn! There's something special about their pickles and I can't quite place my finger on it. I tried the brussels sprouts today and those were crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. THIS PLACE IS SOOOOO GOOOD!! A friend took me here a couple months ago and when some out of town friends came in, I decided to take them here for authentic Japanese fried chicken. I ordered their Mixed Fried Chicken Bento like 4 times for a party of 5 to split. I would recommend ordering side sauces to eat the chicken to add different flavor. So tender and juicy, and quite literally the best fried chicken I've ever had. It's a little pricy as a heads up, but worth it! Service was pretty fast as they make the chicken to order. We came on a Wednesday for dinner and it was full with reservations, the only options we had were bar or outdoor seating. Since they're an izakaya, be mindful that the portions are smaller but that just means you can try more variety. Our favorite was the fried chicken thigh, it was crispy and juicy. Overall experience (8/10) - The chicken store is different than other karaage chicken that I have eaten because they use a different, lighter batter. The food and service were both good. There was also a good atmosphere with some outside seating too. The parking can be more crowded on the weekend, but there are many streets to find parking on in the area. Food - The chicken karaage was good and tender and had a soft and thin batter compared to the traditional Japanese karaage. The chicken karaage had good flavor, but not as great as other places that I have had though. The potato salad had a wonderful egg on top with a jelly like yolk and the potato salad a good balance of flavor. I hope to be able to try this again and get a different experience as so many people look to love this place and also again you really can tell they take a lot of pride in the business. I ordered what was recommended which was the Naman bento and also upgraded to the udon. Plus ordered a Kyoto Matcha IPA. About a $40 meal. The good: -I did enjoy the cabbage with some type of yuzu dressing. It was fresh and a great balance to the rest of the food. I love yuzu anything and this was on point. -presentation is gorgeous - the set is really beautifully put together -if you get the udon noodle upgrade, super winner... broth was perfect and the noodles and tofu skin cake awesome. Now the not so good: -My chicken was disappointingly mushy and drenched in sauce. While tender there was a lack of flavor but also I couldn't get past the texture. I thought maybe it was just the sauce but when I bit into the chicken, it looked like the batter also wasn't cooked through or drenched in oil. -My rice also was gummy and over cooked with water. At the end of my meal when allowed to sit out though it was much better. So I think it just needed to air out a bit. - My matcha IPA was cool in being green but the IPA overpowered the matcha flavor. LOVED the food here. The chicken is so flavorful, moist and the tartar sauce is soooo good. It's Japanese style, made with eggs and kewpie. It makes this chicken even better. The grapefruit soda is a whole grapefruit where they blend the inside so when you flip it over, the juice and pulp can be poured into the soda. Really refreshing but not sure it's worth $10. Solid place for lunch, dinner or late night eats (open until 11 PM) if you're craving Japanese style fried chicken and drinks. Drinks: we tried the orange sour and the grapefruit soda. Both looked so cute with the whole fruit sitting on top of the glass and they both tasted light and refreshing. You really have to squeeze the fruits well into the drink to get more of that fruit flavor. I've also tried their oolong chu-hi which is an oolong-flavored cocktail. If you like oolong tea, I highly recommend this one! I really enjoyed the roasted flavor of this drink. Japanese fried chicken is a vibe. This place has been in old Torrance for a time so it was a matter of time before we finally tried it. So what do you order here? Fried chicken. The chicken nanban is their most popular, which consists of incredibly juicy chicken with a nice sauce drizzled on top. Not entirely sure what the sauce is but it's darn good. The only thing that would've pushed this to 5 stars is if the skin was super crunchy. It wasn't particularly crunchy and maybe that's just a consequence of the chicken being too juicy. But hey, balancing juicy and crispy is a daunting task. Besides the chicken, you also get rice and miso soup (or you can upgrade to udon for just $3 extra). First time here. Late lunch, at 2:20PM. They offer inside and outside dining. We chose outside dining, a 4 top under an umbrella. A server said he wanted us to move to a 2 top but it was in the sun. Tried out Gaburi Chicken during a sleepy Saturday afternoon. I was originally wanting to sit inside but the weather was nice and the inside felt hot, so opted for outdoor seating. Big mistake. I guess it's not used frequently and the tables and chairs were very dirty. It had multiple wet dirt spots with all sorts of debris. The server was willing to wipe everything down really quick but it really didn't do much. It ended up making the dried up dirt wet and made the table and seat freshly mucky. Unlike typical restaurants, Gaburi Chicken offers separate lunch and dinner menus even on weekends. That's great and all unless the items you want to actually eat are only offered for dinner time-- like their grilled chicken thighs and garlic rice type things. So we settled on ordering some karaage chicken curry. Not exactly what I wanted to order or what I had come in for, but I figured why not. Well, by the time I placed the order and waited for the items to arrive, I was eaten up alive by bugs nonstop. The tree above the table kept shedding more and more yellow flowers and pollen which made it very unpleasant to stay sitting outside. By then I was so over it with Gaburi. It was slow to get our orders taken, even slower for the items to arrive, the tables and seats weren't clean and now I'm snowed with pollen and stung by bugs. I think the couple next to us must have thought I'm having a meltdown for no reason by repeatedly slapping myself. So we resorted in having the order to-go much to the chagrin of the unfriendly Japanese woman inside who argued with my dining companion about wanting to leave and wanting the order to-go. She didn't want us sitting inside because we chose to sit outside in the first place. Wow ok. Nice hospitality! By the time we got to sit down and eat the to-go order, it felt like we received the ultimate f*ck you in a bowl. Curry only containing burnt tasting watery broth and exactly 2 small morsels of karaage atop a disproportionately large amount of rice. Quite a lunch special right there. The lunch special karaage bowl wasn't much better. It had 3 morsels of karaage atop a plastic container of rice and basically nothing else. WHAT A STEAL. Now the karaage itself was delicious even after being cold and becoming somewhat stale yet soggy. This was due to the karaage being placed on top of rice inside of a plastic container. I would have put them separately in a paper box with some ventilation on top of the sealed rice. This would help keep it warmer without the sog especially when it's purchased as a take away. Anyway, I doubt these people care about that sorta things. I did appreciate our very friendly server for going above and beyond to make our visit better. I feel very bad he got chewed out by the Japanese woman in-charge inside. Hence, the 3/5 rating even though I would have given a 2/5. Why? I give it a 5/5 for our above and beyond server for customer service, a 4/5 for the taste of karaage, and rest of the experience a 1 including the dirty seats outside, unaccommodating attitude by the woman in-charge, and crappy portions for the take home food. Would I visit again in the future? Possibly if it's in the evening just to go check out their grilled chicken thighs and garlic rice. This restaurant was one of our favorite spots we really enjoyed but lately food has been tasting a little different.. not sure if recipe changed but the batter for the fried chicken is super salty and tako wasa was super salty and drenched in sesame oil.. besides that everything was still pretty good, except the service. Service is super slow, they never check up on you ask if everything's ok or if we need anything else. We had asked for an extra plate, it was never brought out. Getting our check was a nightmare, we nearly waited 20 min for a server to come to us and eventually no one did so we had to get up ourselves. We also had both the fried chicken and the gaburi chicken leg. My vote is the chicken leg that the cut up for you at the table. We asked for waters, and after waiting about 30 minutes, they completely forgot until we reminded them--and the restaurant wasn't even busy. Our meals came with miso soup, but no spoon was provided. I came here for lunch with my family, and while the food was okay, it definitely wasn't memorable. Unfortunately, the service was by far the biggest disappointment. My family arrived before our friends, so we were seated and waited. During that time, no one greeted us, offered us water, or even acknowledged that we were there. Even after our friends arrived, we still had to flag someone down whenever we needed anything. Not once did a server come by to check on our table or ask if we needed refills or anything else. What made it even more surprising was that there were at least 7 or 8 servers working in a relatively small restaurant, yet the level of service was incredibly poor. The server who took our order spent part of the time playing with his handheld POS device--tossing and spinning it in his hands while we were ordering--which came across as unprofessional and inattentive. The overall impression was that the staff had very little direction or accountability. It felt like they were free to do whatever they wanted instead of focusing on the guests. We went for their 1year anniversary and happy hour 3-5p on a Saturday. Supposed to be $2 off appetizers and $5 beer. I was surprised how busy it was since the rest of old Torrance seemed quiet. Inside has ~8 tables for small groups and full bar seating. The patio outside has another ~5 tables. Service was a bit slow but all staff were very nice. We were seated right away without any reservation. We started with the chicken salad. It isn't anything to write home about but is a solid dish with a tasty dressing. The scallop carpaccio was a bit lackluster. Flavors and presentation were there, but the the scallops were a bit tough and had a woody texture. There are much better scallops sold at the Wilson park farmer's market. Those ones are frozen straight from Japan and taste smooth and buttery. We then ordered their signature bone in chicken. FYI need 20 min ahead since it's cooked to order. The cheese is $3 and garlic rice, roe/ egg is $9. It comes out sizzling hot. The waiter cut the chicken off the bone and poured the chicken oil on the rice. High quality service and reminded me of when we were in Florence when the waiter cooked and chopped the L bone off my Florentine steak. Anyways, the chicken is juicy, seasoned with a lot of pepper. I do recommend the cheese as this adds a unique flavor. The garlic rice topped with roe is awesome with chicken oil and soy sauce, just wish there was more of it. Best fried chicken I've had in LA / South Bay!! I went for lunch wanting the bone-in chicken but the lunch menu was different - not disappointing at all because the chicken nanban was DELICIOUS. If anything, it could use more of the fried/crunchy garlic I love the fried brussel sprouts. Somehow with how it's prepared and served, they batter stays one consistently. Perfectly cooked. Wish the seasoning was done better since you get some bits with lots of flavor and some bites with just brussel/batter. Bone-in chicken is a must. A small show where they cut it in front of you when it arrives and if you get the garlic fried rice, they'll pour the sauce from the chicken on it. It's a nice touch. The chicken is juicy and flavorful. Garlic fried rice is forgettable in my mind. Needs more garlic flavor. The egg on the hot place over fries the egg so when you mix it all, it's not very consistent. Also got the 3 combo chicken. This was kind of the disappoint for me. While juicy, I don't think it's as amazing as people say. Portion seems very small for $20. I think if anything, they should include 1 or 2 sauces for you to select from when buying the chicken. $1 for each sauce seems without letting you order at least 1 or two with your combo just seems like a money grab. I was already excited to try this spot, and it still exceeded my expectations! I've been seeing videos everywhere about the grilled chicken here, which looked delicious, but it somehow tastes even better than you could imagine. When the bone-in chicken comes out, they cut it into pieces for you at the table. It really is a little show, which is fun. They also take the juices of the chicken and pour it all over the rice and mix it up for you. It is soooo flavorful. There's this very nice char and smokiness to the outside of the meat. It's crispy on the outside, but so extremely juicy on the inside. It's also got an amazing seasoning inside and out. I can't even describe what exactly is in the seasoning, but it's salty, umami, and addicting. Eating it with the garlic egg rice is a dream. It looks so simple, but the textures and flavors of everything work so beautifully together. I highly recommend adding on the garlic rice if you get the bone-in chicken. The 3 combo Fried Chicken is also awesome to share. It's 2 pieces each of the thigh, breast, and wing. The chicken is really nicely fried. The batter is light and crisp, and the chicken inside is super succulent and savory. It went extremely well with the yuzu pepper sauce. It was extra, and the portion is small, but it is pungent and you don;t need a lot. It is an interesting flavor that elevated the experience and cuts the richness of all of the fatty foods. Gaburi I've driven by this place a couple of times and it was always packed. Pulled up and noticed people waiting outside and every spot on the street for parking was taken. A really good sign. I was seated immediately at the bar and told I had an hour and a half before a reservation for the whole bar was coming in. I knew that would be plenty of time so I agreed to take a bar seat. They start off with a hand towel that expands from the pouring of hot water on a small pill sized disc. Very neat concept and a towel that was really nice as well. I decided to mix it up a little bit tonight and try both styles of chicken even though fried chicken is my thing. Started out with the Ground chicken rice bowl was excellent nice gingery flavor, fresh vegetables, shredded carrot, green onion, and ground chicken over a bowl of rice extremely flavorful. Served super hot so you know it's fresh and I love my food that way. I tried the fried chicken thighs and they were excellent. They were marinated and had a really nice flavor profile. They were super tender and juicy, and the skin was super crispy. I dipped in some mayo with some of their chili powder and a little bit of soy which even made things better. The chicken was excellent again very hot and fresh right out of the fryer. The star of the show is the baked Gaburi chicken, which is a leg quarter that is marinated 24 hours and then baked. It had a very unique marinade which I could not pick up any distinct herbs or spices. That was very tasty. The skin was cooked very well and had a nice crisp to it. The chicken was extremely tender and juicy, and it was served with some chopped cabbage on the side. It was a generous portion, even though it was just one leg quarter. It was a very large leg quarter. I ate at the bar and the bartender was extremely friendly and helpful with information letting me know that this was a chain from Japan and this was the first US location. They make some very interesting drinks here as well. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. The ambience is great. I have frequented this place multiple times, I'm surprised I have yet to write a review. I normally come for lunch and order a set meal. I go between the mix fried chicken or chicken nanban. It comes with rice, miso soup, edamame, Japanese pickles and cabbage. This meal is so filling. Everything is delicious. I've come for dinner a couple of times and ordered the bone-in chicken, garlic rice and tried the matcha tiramisu for dessert. The very first time I came with a group of maybe 15 people, we all had a taste of many different things like the shaka shaka fries, grilled mackerel, gyoza and more. The wife and I always end up finding ourselves back here often. The food is good quality and filling, and there's a wide variety of flavors that are worth exploring. We usually get the chicken combo plate to share with an order of the garlic rice and a side or two. The cucumber salad is one of my favs, and I've also recently tried out the wasabi quail eggs which are amazing. Service is quick and its a fun place to hang out and drink with friends. I've been liking the oolong chu-hi. You really dont taste the alcohol, it will sneak up on you. Overall a great place to go. Came here on Friday night and we got a table right away. We enjoyed the Tan tan noodles, the chicken was a little oily for us but it was still good with the garlic rice. The service was great. read more

I'm so glad I was introduced to Gaburi Chicken! The chicken here was incredible--lightly crispy on the outside without being greasy at all. I usually feel weighed down after fried chicken, but not here. It was so satisfying without the guilt. The inside was super juicy, and the portion was generous--four large pieces of boneless chicken that hit the spot. I got the Thigh Chicken Set Meal and the Chicken Nanban Set Meal. I loved them both, but I will have to say that the Regular Thigh Chicken edges out the Chicken Nanban slightly. There's something about the unadulterated chicken with a side of Yuzu Kosho that really hit the spot. The Chicken Nanban was still delicious though, and the tartar sauce was a nice blend of mayo and citrus. I also really appreciated the side cabbage salad that came with it. The yuzu dressing was bright, refreshing, and balanced everything out perfectly. Honestly, everything on the plate felt well thought out and delicious.
