The pancakes were HUGE. They were size of two fluffy frisbees. Coffee good, eggs and bacon also good. My companions had French toast and a chili omelette. Both were great. I'm looking forward to trying the Eggs Benedict. The board specials looked creative and interesting. But the vibe ... Oh it's perfect for what it is ... a breakfast and lunch place. We got there fairly early, and the place filled up after we ordered. I've seen lines on the weekends. It's a popular place on what used to be Bayside Drive back in the day ... back before the road was rerouted. The service is excellent ... I'll be back, but maybe not on the weekend. We ended up at this old school diner by way of a happy little accident! We had planned to have a Lyft drop us off on Balboa peninsula at a place called My Galley so we could walk to the pier for a whale watching cruise afterward. We were going to grab breakfast sandwiches from the window and take them on the road. We punched in the wrong "Galley" and ended up having a much more enjoyable breakfast experience at the Galley Cafe. It did require an extra ride with Lyft, but in the end was totally worth the mix-up! We especially loved the omelet. The meats inside were perfectly cooked and tasted fantastic together. We also had coffee and this meal with a side of biscuits and gravy was the perfect amount of food, since we had no way to take leftovers. read more

The Galley Cafe has a large following and several people suggested that I give them a try. They are best known for the Chili Cheese Omelet and pancakes. I ordered both and after all of the positive comments was pretty surprised by the fact that I didn't like it. The pancakes were dry and the chili cheese omelet was in a class of it's own. It was an omelet stuffed with canned chili and what taste like Kraft cheese singles. I am not sure why an egg served with canned chili and processed cheese is so popular but it is loved by many . Absolutely disgusting. No joke the worst meal I have had in years and took one bite and threw it out. Pale fries that are basically gray in person. Rubbish. Patty melt with no flavor, onions aren't prepared properly so are stringy. Sloppy thousand island just smeared over a round beef patty that fits maybe 60-70% of the entire sandwich, meaning 40-30% of this is just bread. I am so disappointed. I've had several casual business meetings there and will never go back, I'm refusing to ever eat here again. No one should ever be served this low quality of slop. Have loved this little diner for years (decades). It's nostalgic and the food is exactly what you'd expect from an old school diner yet with the view of the harbor and the friendly service it tastes even better. Considering the location prepare yourself for gourmet diner prices. COVID is still a thang (a year and a half in) so it was exciting to eat inside... however the tiny booths and the proximity of the neighbors and staff not wearing masks tripped my kids out a little hence the fifth star. Had lunch here. Just Wasnt the same as breakfast. 3 stars for the chocolate malt, one of the best I've ever had. Took me back to childhood. But my "medium rare" cheeseburger was well done, dry as shoe leather, definitely not a 1/3 of a pound and was bland with no taste or flavor, like it had been cooked on a frying Pan. Super cute little old fashioned diner in Newport! My first stop right off the plane Friday morning and this place totally hit the spot. Loved all the original artwork and personal family photos and history on display. As well as the original kitchen appliances like the soda machine and milkshake mixer. The staff was so friendly. You could tell they were proud to work for a family business with 60+ years of service and love. The eggs Benedict was absolutely delicious with a side of extra crispy hash browns. Went here to celebrate my bday with my partner. We are both Latin. We were the only POC customers in there and we felt as if we were in a scene from the movie, Get Out. The staff was rude and the food had no flavor. If you are a POC I DO NOT RECOMMEND coming here. Also, I'm sure the staff and patrons want to keep it POC free. The Galley Cafe was my first job at 17 years old back in the mid-80's. I washed dishes, helped cook, clean and make fountain drinks (old school style) and milkshakes for $3.50/hour! LOL The best item on the menu is by far the chili cheese omelet!! They have (or used to have) a straight chili without beans that was also an option and that was incredible! Everything is home made! The potatoes are cut fresh daily. I was fortunate enough to know the original owners Eddie and Myrtle! They were just the sweetest couple and always worked hard! Their son Hoffy was a great guy too! Yes, the place is small and almost always is a wait to be seated in the am, but that just tells you the food is worth the wait! Lots of locals come here and a nice secret tourist spot as well I cant say enough great things about this little gem...I just hope you love the food and experience of a real old school diner in Newport Beach read more

This place should be shut down from the health department and should be reported. The food was horrible and because they are busy they don't follow up on how it is. I got a hamburger and it was over cooked and cold. The food handling was disgusting. The server also cleaned and bussed the tables. The same person also collected the money and than with the same dirty hands without washing reset the clean silverware. The person would touch the silverware on the part you eat with. Absolutely disgusting. I lost my appetite. The butter was left on the tables and was warm. Don't know if that might make me sick but decided not to try. Overall.
