Well first off. I'm not and expert on German cuisine but I know what I like when it come to German food and Gasthaus Tirol fills the bill. Gasthause Tirol is an authentic German and Austrian restaurant. One look at the menu confirms it. Known for traditional German dishes like schnitzel, bratwurst, strudel and an actual Bier Garten with a nice selection of German beers on tap After perusing all the delicious looking menu items I went the Sample Plate. A Trio of tasty meats. Winer Schnitzel, Sauerbraten and Debrezina sausage some veggies and potato dumplings. What a tasty meal and the gravy was exceptional. The tall cold and very smooth Hacker Pschorr Dunkel was a delicious dark beer to complement the meal. All the desserts are homemade and I couldn't decide between the Apple Strudel and the mysterious Black Forest cake. The sever said the Black Forest was her favorite so I went with it. It surpassed all expectations. So moist and the whip cream was just heavenly. I was there for lunch but they do take reservations which is highly recommended for peak times. read more

The pastrami sandwich here is, without a doubt, one of the best in the Cumming and Alpharetta area. It's the only reason we've continued coming back. Unfortunately, the service has consistently been incredibly SLOW, and this last visit was unacceptable. The restaurant wasn't busy at all--we were the first guests to arrive. In fact, I purposely planned it that way because I know the service is usually slow. We timed everything because it was so noticeable. It took about 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. Then another 5-10 minutes just to receive our drinks. Our server took our order and then completely disappeared. About 30 minutes later, she brought our sandwiches. She asked if we needed anything else, and then disappeared again. We finished eating in about 15-20 minutes, and after that, we waited another 40-45 minutes before she came back. From the moment she dropped off our food until we finally saw her again, it had been about 45-50 minutes. During that entire time, she never checked on us once. We had planned to order dessert, but by the time she returned, we couldn't wait any longer. We had to ask for a to-go box and the check because we were already running late. Looking around the restaurant, we weren't the only frustrated customers. One gentleman nearby was visibly upset as well. For three sandwiches, our meal took almost two hours. That's just crazy. It's simply not reasonable. It's disappointing because the food is excellent, but the service has become such a recurring issue that it's making us question whether we'll come back. A restaurant this small should be be able to provide a much better dining experience. I honestly can't think of a good explanation unless the server was also hosting, cooking, preparing to-go orders, or doing multiple jobs at once. I don't know what was happening behind the scenes, but something clearly isn't working, and they need to figure it out. The food deserves better service than this. My only advice is you're gonna go and have lunch there make sure you have at least a two to three hours read more

Excellent food and excellent service from Ranata. German pretzel and potato pancake appetizers. Awesome draft beer. Entrees I think the veal schnitzel was the best. Bratwurst that came with the pretzel was delicious. Worth the hour plus ride. read more

Very good, we enjoyed it! Quite a drive from where we live, but it was a fun experience to try different cuisine. Note: They are closed on Mondays, and they close at about 2 p.m. on other days then reopen for dinner at 5 p.m. Bring your patience and set aside some time, because it has a slower pace. read more

Gasthaus Tirol is a quaint German restaurant in an old house, on a very busy corner in the heart of Cumming, GA. The property includes two enclosed rear porches that provide pleasant winter seating separated by a nice compact Koi pond. The inside of the home has a somewhat unusual, very compact layout. The combo meat platter was highly disappointing: one item smaller than a hot dog, a small piece of braised beef roughly two inches by two inches by a quarter inch, and potato pancakes that arrived both small and cold, making the experience feel underwhelming. While the food itself was decent in flavor and the beer selection was excellent. The beers are sold in half litre, full litre (like in Bavaria for Oktoberfest!) and the boot, which is 67 ounces! I went with a full litre of Warsteiner, was fantastic. However, the portion sizes left a strong sense of poor value. All German restaurants I have been to in my life serve very large portions, Gasthaus Tirol certainly does not serve large portions unfortunately. In the end, the atmosphere and beer are the highlights, but the lackluster portion sizes keep this visit at a three-star level. read more

We have eaten at the establishment many times in the past and found the food to be of good quality. The last time we ate there I did find a dead fly in my wife's mashed potatoes before she ate it. I'm not saying that mistakes can't happen but we will not be eating there again. read more

This is place is a rare, authentic gem. It has a rather austere look from the outside, but don't let outward appearances deceive you. It's lovely inside, quaint, neat as a pin, and quiet. The food is authentic and delicious and the beer is imported from Germany, served in steins, and ice cold. The gulaschensuppe was absolutely to die for--I've not had soup like since I visited Austria. The schnitzel was delicious and perfectly cooked and the rotkohl was wonderful. Delicious German food in a jam packed house in Cumming. I had tried their food once at a catered event and really wanted to come to the restaurant. I was not disappointed. The building itself is a house with tables in several rooms (living room dining room sun room). It's tight and you sit very close to the next table. But it works. You sort of feel like a guest in someone's home. I'm not German and not an expert in German food. But I could hear many German speakers in the room. I figured that was a good sign. I started with a gluwein which is hot spiced red wine. Very christmassy and delicious. And it certainly warms you up on a cold night. It's somewhat sweet, so I switched to beer with dinner. We had pretzel and sausage to start. We took the waitress's recommendation for sausage. Delicious. For dinner we both had the same dish. Veal Schnitzel with red cabbage and potato salad. Every bite was incredible. I never thought I would say that about cabbage. So good. For dessert I had the apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. My wife had the bread pudding. The taste sensations were incredible throughout the entire meal. Highly recommended. Also call ahead for a reservation as they are quite busy. read more

It was a cold rainy day when we finally stopped in to try Gasthaus for lunch. What better way to warm up on a cold day? At 12:30 on a Friday, the front rooms weren't busy when we arrived, although they started filling up while we ate. The house is super cute and decorated for the holidays. In fact, we were sitting by a nice lady who (the waitress told us later) actually brings in all of their holiday table decorations. The ambiance and service were fantastic. This nice lady also told us how their meats are cooked for days and their bread and desserts are all made in-house. She recommended the Ruben and it was so good! I wasn't a huge fan of the Spaetzle, it was a little dry, which maybe it was supposed to be, but it wasn't what I was expecting. We also had the pretzel and sausage plate, which was a little odd, with a small pile of sliced sausage next to a wonderful pretzel. It didn't really look like it went together but was very good. The hot cocoa with Baileys and blackberry was delicious and, of course, the German beer was perfect. If you've ever wondered what a German restaurant run by a German (then an Austrian, and now someone who "has German in their family") might taste like after a few generations of ownership drift--Gasthaus Tirol has got you covered. We rolled in right at 5 p.m. when the doors opened and were the only ones there for the first half hour. You'd think that meant fast service. You'd be wrong. Our server was sweet, but she'd vanish for long stretches and leave our glasses drier than a pretzel in the desert. I finally had to ask--loudly--for a refill, like I was in the back row of a school play. I was raised by a full-blooded German dad, so I came in with high hopes. Especially because my dad has Celiac disease and this place is supposedly a haven for gluten-free German eats. Authentic, award-winning, and Celiac-friendly? We were all in. Unfortunately, we got more wannabe Wienerschnitzel than wunderbar. Appetizer: Cheese & Sausage Plate for Two ($13) Shockingly solid! Three mystery cheeses (I recognized pepper jack and a dill one), two sausages (Debrezina and Weisswurst), spicy mustard, and club crackers. The mustard had serious kick--it was like the mustard packets from 1980s Lunchables came back with a vengeance. Delicious, but had me questioning my tolerance for horseradish. House Salad This mix of greens, sweet and sour cabbage, cucumber, tomato, and carrots didn't look like much, but it worked. Tossed it with cucumber dill dressing, and boom--actually good. First salad I've ever taken home like leftovers. I don't even know who I am anymore. Sampler Plate ($26) Wiener Schnitzel (veal): Crispy, tender, lemony goodness. No complaints. Knockwurst: Tasted like knockwurst. Not much else to say. Sauerbraten: This one hurt. It was putrid. Smelled and tasted like it had been left out overnight next to a radiator. I grew up on sauerbraten and can confidently say--this wasn't it. Sides German Potato Salad: Bland, big awkward cubes, light on vinegar. Needed something--anything. Potato Dumplings: Tiny, dense, and flavorless. I grew up with fluffy potato balls; these were more like potato marbles with an identity crisis. Dessert: Crème Brûlée ($6) Took it home. It was smooth and tasty, but the portion was about four spoonfuls. A nice treat if you just want your tongue to remember dessert existed. Parents' Rundown Cheese & sausage plate: They were into it. Jägerschnitzel: Dad couldn't get past the red wine sauce. Sauerkraut: Unnaturally sweet, like apple pie filling's sour cousin. Butcher's Plate: Mom said it was fine (i.e. she wouldn't order it again). Cheesecake: Dad liked the richness but it was the size of a thick wallet--about 2 inches tall, 6 inches long and wide. Blink and you'd miss it. German Chocolate Cake: Big, moist, and mom-approved. Half went home. Pretzel: Way too salty, way too doughy. Dad used his yearly gluten pass on it and instantly regretted it. The Heritage Originally opened by a real-deal German back in 1995. Then an Austrian took over, and now it's run by someone who "has German in their family." That's the culinary equivalent of saying "my cousin visited Paris once, so I opened a French bakery." The Bill My total should've been $46.95 with tea, but it came out over $50 before tip. My parents' meals were mysteriously overcharged too. Sure, they offer a $2 cash discount, but when you're nickel-and-diming the menu, it adds up. Final Verdict Would I drive an hour to eat here again? Absolutely not. I'll stick to reminiscing about real German food and 1980s Lunchables. But hey--if you're gluten-free, love mild confusion, and think German food should have a surprise twist, this place might be your thing read more

One of my favorite restaurants. Such good food, service, and ambiance. Tonight was the rare exception. I had the special-Lemon Caper Schnitzel and it was awful. Could not taste the lemon or capers because of powerful diced onions in the sauce. It was not disclosed that there were even onions in the sauce. I can still taste and smell the onions after leaving the restaurant. For people who do not like onions this is horrifying. Ruined my night. It is unfortunate because the schnitzel itself was cooked absolutely perfectly. Please be sure that customers understand ingredients especially strong flavors like this. Traditional, quaint German restaurant. We arrived on a Saturday at 6:45 and it was packed, however, we didn't have to wait for a table and were seated immediately. We started with the pretzel and cheese and sausage plate. Next, time we will go with the pretzel and sausage combo, the cheese was just okay. The sausage was the star, our favorite being the Debrezina, so flavorful. Next was the house salad, had two types of pickled cabbage and dill dressing, the sweet and savory combo was so delectable, I wanted to lick the plate. The beef stroganoff was tender, but could have had a little more beef in it. The kid's meal was a generous portion and Rachel our server was delightful. The Apple strudel was very fresh and we will likely order whole ones in the future. The only complaint is that our entrees were not super hot.. We will definitely be returning again. read more

But hey, I've never been to Germany, so maybe this is typical, as I know the food is authentic (went here with 4 others who had lived in Germany for 5 years. We've been here twice and there are a couple nice standouts on the menu, all in all the food is just okay. Not bad, not great. The iced tea is a spiced tea - FYI, if you enjoy just regular iced tea, this isn't it. The staff is friendly, but there aren't many. For example, the nice lady who served us said she was also working in the kitchen at the same time. We ate in the "Biergarten" - which I believe translates to: a hot musty tent where all broken equipment, dead planters, stacks of chairs, and tables are stored. It was literally like eating in a tool shed. The first time we went here we ate inside. It's quaint, but I agree with the other comments, it is pretty tight and cramped. I'm sure it's different during events but when we were there (both times) the absence of any music (live or just background music) made the silence deafening. It also accentuated the closeness of the tables, all conversations were heard. This place is worth trying. There will be some menu items that stand out, while others are just average. We've experienced it twice, and that's probably it for us. With a bit of work, I think this establishment could be so much more. read more

We're a big fan of German food so we decided to give Gasthaus Tirol a try. It's a cute space with a large beer garden out back. We were sat at a table off the patio which had no light or heat but luckily our waiter brought over a candle for us so we could see our food. The food was all very good with the exception of the spaetzle. Unfortunately it was like eating plain pasta with no sauce. Adding some butter or cheese would make it much better. The Wiener schnitzel was nice and thin and the brown sauce was tasty. The entrees come with a salad, two sides, and bread so it's a good amount of food. The sampler came with roasted beef with gravy, Wiener schnitzel, and sausage. It was good but would probably just stick to schnitzel next time. Skip the potato dumplings as well! The bacon was scarce and the flavor wasn't great. Overall, it was a good experience and with a few changes the food could definitely be 5-star. read more

Came yesterday April 16,2024 met some family members for lunch. I ordered the Cuban sandwich and fries, the bread was very very hard and burnt on top and the fries were way too cooked. This is the go to spot for my wife and I. Spent a lot of time in Germany and this place has all of my favorites. The food is amazing. The potato pancakes are perfect with sour cream and applesauce. I love German food, and I wanted to like this place. So much. However, I can't recommend it. Our party was 6 people. 1 person liked their dinner. The sauerbraten was bland and tasted slightly off. The goulash had no flavor. The beef stroganoff was OK. The Austrian special was the only dish that sort of hit the mark. The potato pancakes were good. The worst part: without exception the food showed up to the table barely warmer than room temperature. Even after sending it back, it showed up barely warm. Meanwhile, the staff spend a huge amount of time in personal conversation with diners whom they clearly knew. Bottom line, don't bother. read more

If you haven't tried this place yet, I recommend it for a first date or special event. Although the inside dining room is on the petite side, the addition of the decked beer garten area with koi garden is great for all seasons and they welcome dogs. Our German Shepherd is a cook's favorite and he enjoys the atmosphere as well. I was surprised by a delicious red German wine, although I can't remember the name at this moment, but I'm saying just try whatever on the wine list interests you. It will be well worth you time. My family is german and I grew up on the red cabbage, sausages, kraut, potato salad etc. and have found this to be a legit and delicious opportunity to enjoy German cuisine outside my own kitchen ;-) The mixed drink selection is also delicious and for $9.00, at my last visit a few months ago was fully-spirited. Great food, great service and a nice outside patio complete with fish pond! R wanted German food at a place we've never been to before, so we drove to Cumming. From outside, Gasthaus Tirol doesn't look like much, which, to me, looked like an old house with fencing around the back surrounded by a gravel lot. The restaurant isn't that big, so I'm sure there's always free parking available, except for maybe around Octoberfest every year when everyone becomes German. Don't let the looks of the place fool you; this is a serious German restaurant! We were met immediately by an employee (if I remember correctly she was also the owner) who welcomed us to Gasthaus Tirol and asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. Since it was a nice evening, we opted to sit in the patio (biergarten). We had to walk through the restaurant, and I noticed it WAS an old house that was converted into a restaurant with most of the rooms intact to provide customers a little privacy from others. We sat at a table right next to the fish pond, which contained koi and goldfish. Our server was so nice and proud of the food served in her restaurant. R and I asked her many questions about items on the menu. I ordered the sauerbraten - roast beef marinated and braised with sweet and sour brown gravy. R ordered the pork jagerschnitzel - pan seared cutlet in mushroom wine sauce sprinkled with fried onions. Both of our entrees came with two sides, a house salad and bread, so I ordered mashed potatoes and red cabbage for my sides, and R ordered red cabbage and spatzle for his sides. Our food was cooked perfectly and was so delicious! We've had German food at a certain restaurant located near the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, and the food at Gasthaus Tirol is soooo much flavorful and a whole lot better tasting! We had beers (how could we not order beers!?), and wished there was a live oom pah pah band providing entertainment. We just happened to come in on a Wednesday, and we each got free apple strudel (with vanilla ice cream!) because we had ordered entrees. Oh, and the strudel was so good that I dreamt about it for the next few nights. I think because the portion was so big (but so good)! Our server was very attentive, even though she had quite a few tables to tend to, and checked on us a few times throughout our meal. She had a good sense of humor, especially when I was done with my plate, which had no trace of food left on it, and asked me if I enjoyed my meal. I smiled and told her I hated the food. She then laughed and said, "Yes, I could tell! Would you like some dessert, or do you hate that too?" Great service + great food + great beer = great dining experience! read more

Our reservation was for inside the house, they also have a covered patio, we were seated right away, the food was good and at a reasonable price, they had a number of German beers and wines on the menu, we actually wanted to take a picture of the menu with the wines we had so we could look for them at our local store but forgot.
