Last time I went to Geckos was in December 2007 (before moving) and therefore my review may be outdated. I lived one block from Geckos and therefore was a frequent visitor. Monday nights ( 10 cent chicken wing) ....they made "fries wings" for me ..since I do not eat meat. Wednesday nights ( 1/2 price burgers). Pros: 1) The menu is short and sweet. It's nice not having 88 options to choose from. 2) The weekly specials appear to be nice. 3) It's located in a great part of Nob Hill. Location, location, location. Cons: 1) People are allowed to smoke on the patio. Great for some people, bad for me. 2) The food is nothing special. I know it's bar food but even the bar food was a little weak to the taste. 3) The further back in the restaurant you go the darker and less appealing this place becomes. I've always enjoyed going to Geckos we've recommended this place to several of our friends. The food is good especially those green chile cheese fries. I'm upset because the last few times the service hasn't been good at all. The waitress seated us and NEVER came back we approached the bar ourselves and the bar tender said the waitress would take care of us. We even waived her down said she would be right back. Again we waited and went back to the bar tender he told us last call was awhile ago. We waited almost 2 hours for no service. It was so upsetting we had friends from out of town and we had bragged about Geckos and ended up leaving disappointed. read more

My husband and I dropped in for drinks and appetizers on a Thursday night. It was a bit crowded, but we easily found parking and a table. The drink selection includes a myriad of beer and whiskey options, as well as several decent wine options. There are different drink specials each night of the week, and my husband took advantage of the $3.50 special on Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. As for the food, we skipped the tapas and stuck to the bar appetizers, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The green chile cheese fries were very good. We ordered the small size, which was more than enough for two to share. The chorizo bleu cheese queso was also quite good, with plenty of chorizo and just a bit of bleu cheese crumbled on top. The chips served alongside the dip, however, are nothing to write home about. Finally, we ordered a half-dozen of the tangy chipotle hot wings, which were excellently cooked and nicely spicy for our Texan palates. The service was prompt, if not enthusiastic. All in all, it was a great experience, and we'll be back. read more

Its been a couple of times that I've been here and the service is always less than decent. One of the bartenders who is an older lady with blonde hair took a while to greet me and my cousin at the bartop for lunch when NO ONE was in the place. We asked for menus and she angrily replied " I thought you got one from the front". She disappeared for 4 mins checking her iPhone and talking to the cook before she came back with menus. Then we asked to try a sample of one of the beers one tap to which she replied "well its an American Lager" and walked away. She came back to pour it and set the sample down with a loud clank on the bartop. The food came out wrong and she seemed even more annoyed. We left with a 15% tip and tried again at another time. This time another server who we tried to call over to fix a drink since our server was busy in a conversation with another customer looked over, rolled her eyes and kept walking. It is just another hidden treasure in Nob Hill. Tucked away in a cul du sac off of central next to the Co-op and Scalo. They have a fabulous patio where you can enjoy the great tapas or over indulge in the chili cheese fries or hot chicken wings. They have nightly specials on drinks. It can get kinda busy and the wait staff sometimes gets overwhelmed BUT none the less they are always pretty cool. They have sports playing on the several TVs so if your into sports this is a good place. Try the hummus its great-you will have to ask for extra pitas but I am pretty sure you don't get charged extra. read more

Very frustrated with this place! The smoking on the patio is disgusting, you can't even eat at Scalo with out sacking down some cancer. BEWARE! The businesses in Nob Hill Business Center are trying to quote 'send a message' regarding their precious 10 parking spaces. If you don't stay at their business the ENTIRE time you're parked there they will boot your car on the first offense. I got kicked 86ed (kicked out permanently, by the bar manager for touching the upper side of a cocktail waitresses arm to get her attention. She avoided me for a half hour. Hadn't even had one drink. So the cocktail waitress said she was molested and I guess I triggered her PTSD. I really liked going there before that, was even good friends with the cook before that. After that the cook treated me like a stranger, and I was left feeling, the best friends i had in Albuquerque treated me like a unwanted step child. They act like really nice people, but they have poor judgement. I would never try to go here, it's not a good hangout. Very biased bullshit. Like this place because of the nice outdoor patio and the Nob Hill location. More of a bar than a restauarant, the food is kind of hit and miss. The tapas concept is good, some of the tapas and other items actually are quite good.. The service is sometimes terrible, some of the servers are just plain rude.. The atmosphere is nice, very casual and sort of a "hip" crowd with a sort of neighborhood bar feel. I lived 3 blocks away so it was just that for me.. I've been coming here for nearly 20 years. Why the hell has it taken me so long to review? I guess I never thought dive bars needed reviews, or liked reviews, or that this place was never NOT busy and needed the word to get out. If you're from Albuquerque, you already know that Gecko's makes strong drinks and that the green chile cheese fries are to die for. My most recent discovery, however, surprised me and I'm sharing it with everyone else. I have been dabbling with vegetarianism (well, several days per week at least) so I'm surprised when I come across good vegetarian BAR FOOD. At the bartenders suggestion, I tried the fried cauliflower and the "faux" chicken wings. Hello! I actually was going to send them back because I thought the product was chicken. I mean, weirdly shaped chicken, but who hasn't had a weirdly shaped chicken nugget in their day. Alas, it was veggie based and delicious. And I believe soy-free. I'd also bet good money that the Buffalo sauce (on the side) is homemade. Regardless, it is delicious. So, Gecko's, keep on being you, but thanks for some really cool menu options. read more
