I ordered the shrimp Kow lunch special for nine dollars. It included pork fried rice, an eggroll, and a drink. The food was hot and fresh, but the shrimp kow was a meager portion. In fact, there were only three shrimp in there. The egg roll, was half the size of a regular egg roll. The flavor of everything was fine, but didn't stand out in anyway. I suppose if you're a one-off, you'll be okay. The food is halfway decent (although they murder the SHIT out their vegetables and got my order wrong probably 25% of the time). But to those living in the area looking for a regular go-to Chinese joint, make a better decision. The owner (or who I assume is the owner; cranky old-ish Asian dude, always there, and judging by his demeanor, seems to have made the wrong life choices) won't answer the phone for 45 minutes to an hour before closing time. Speaking of which, that closing time apparently is at the the whim of the owner's mood. I placed a small fried rice order 51 mins before the menu says is their closing time, only for cranky dude to call me THREE TIMES to tell me to come pick up my order. Then he yelled at me when I got there bc apparently I'm expected to be a mind reader and should've known he changed the restaurant's closing time. Well i was looking for a good place to get beef chop suey.I have passed this place hundreds of times and never thought to stop in.I had a taste for beef chop suey so i looked up the reviews on Gen Hoe.I went ahead and drove over there and ordered a large beef chop suey and 2 egg rolls.While waiting in there for my call ahead order I was looking over this very large menu that is on the north wall.I didnt like the fact that there was no pricing on the wall menu.Worse yet i didnt like the fact that what i ordered was like $18.00.I thought the egg rolls were good and the beef chop suey was just okay.Believe me i wanted to be it to be my new go to for chinese food,but my search continues. read more

I had high expectations set for this place after reading all the reviews. I even put it on my calendar to stop by with my wife after a recent doctor's appointment. But, regretfully, our hopes were not realized. We decided to preorder from the car parked just outside their door as to not startle anyone with our unexpected presence since we were in unfamiliar surroundings. Upon entering the place to claim our order, I noticed that the tables were all shoved to one side against a wall, to discourage onsite dining I assumed. I see that often since COVID-19 awareness became a thing. The entering customer after me proved to be the friendliest person in the room, if not the most curious. He quizzed me about what I was getting as if he hadn't realized some Black people eat Chinese food, too. Luckily, it didn't take them long to prepare, and I found myself out and on my way in short order. Pun intended. Anyway,TMALSS, we found our meal to be generous but basically pretty bland. We thought about having the leftovers in the following days over the weekend but didn't. I don't know if soy sauce could have saved it. On last inquiry , I was told it was already in the dumpster. Given the subtle less than welcoming reception and the crammed off-street parking provided, I'm pretty sure we won't be back for more. What a waste. I tried Gen Hoe Restaurant on 102nd and Ridgeland and I was very disappointed. I ordered jumbo shrimp, beef fried rice, orange chicken, and white rice. The shrimp was NOT jumbo and it was tasteless and dry. It had about an inch of fried breading (I'm not exaggerating) and the shrimp was actually small. They used a ton of breading to make it appear jumbo. The beef fried rice was also dry and the beef was tough to chew, the white rice was bland but most are so that was no biggie. The only thing that my family enjoyed was the orange chicken, that was very good. If I ever visit them again, it will only be for that. I'm afraid to waste my money on anything else. Don't even know if I should bother to tell the owner/manager about the guy who took my order. He was rude and was barking at me to hurry up with my order because he had phone orders to fill. I was shocked at how cheap the food was price wise. I ordered chop suey and Mongolian beef for the first time there. They are generous with the meat but the whole point of the dish is to have a good portion of vegetables and beef. There was very little vegetables in both entrees. It may not be 100% authentic chinese, nor is it a great looking place, but i have taken many people there and none of us have been disappointed with the quality or the price of the food.
