For appetizers we ordered the mandu dumplings, cheese tonkatsu and japchae noodles. The dumplings were nicely fried with juicy flavorful filling. The tonkatsu was so crispy and nice! Loved the japchae - it went perfectly with the meats. We opted for the premium dinner and i really enjoyed the long bone marinated short rib steak, center cut short rib, and wagyu. We ordered two premium dinner sets--definitely on the pricier side, so come hungry and plan to savor the experience. The meat was average to good, depending on the cut provided. The first steak was great and the second a bit more chewy. The pork belly, beef belly, beef brisket cuts were all good. As expected for a AYCE and weekday lunch meat options. There's premium items for dinner but at a higher price so lunch is great for the experience and environment. There's a solid selection of meats and sides, so everyone was able to find something they liked. What I find shocking was that there was NO wait going in here! Back in California, the wait could be up to 30 mins to an hour! So this was a nice surprise that we were able to walk right up and get our grub on! They had the usual from what we usually order: brisket, pork belly, bulgogi, beef belly, etc and some apps (although it was odd that the apps came last vs the meat) but not a deal breaker. A solid all you can eat Korean bbq spot in San Antonio. Gen is a chain but it lives up to its reputation which I was happy about. Not a bad location with plenty of parking. The service here was excellent even though our poor server was understaffed running around, she was great and crushed it. The location has chill vibes with stying and music. Menu options plentiful, got the dinner option which for the price I thought was a good deal. My favorite meats were the Galbi, bulgogi, and pork belly. FYI this is authentic diy kbbq, they bring out the meats and you cook it like it's supposed to be if you have questions ask your server. People complain about the service, but we were honestly not impressed with the meats at all. We tried gen steak, pork bulgogi, beef bulgogi, galbi, pork belly and chicken bulgogi.. they were alright. Beef actually tasted gamey which doesn't make sense. The marinated meats were good because they were doused with sauce. Pork belly was not good at all... SO much fat and tasted gross. tofu soup was americanized. japchae did not taste like korean japchae. At least the gyoza was decent. Price was average for kbbq. Food quality 3/5. As someone who considers themselves a Korean BBQ enthusiast, I was initially hesitant to give Gen a try. Before heading over with a friend, I called ahead to check if they offered non-marinated meats, as that's always my preference - they offer a limited selection of non-marinated meats. Upon arriving, I was greeted right away and told I could be seated even though my friend was still five minutes out, which I appreciated. I had every intention of sticking to the standard dinner menu and skipping the Premium upgrade, which is $20 extra per person at the table. It wasn't about the cost--it was simply that the Premium menu didn't appeal to me. Despite that, my friend insisted we go for it. To my surprise, the Premium selections included Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, and a Premium Taco Sampler. Honestly, if I wanted tacos or to dine on authentic cuisine for that specific food, I would have gone to a restaurant specializing in it. I didn't expect to see those offerings at a Korean BBQ spot. The Premium Wagyu was just okay--it could've been the quality, or maybe the sweetness threw me off. I ended up sticking mostly with the non-marinated pork belly and ribeye. I had three servings of the ribeye and even surprised myself with how much I ate. The restaurant's aesthetic was nice, though darker tint on the doors would've helped with the lighting. I've tried Gen in Houston, Dallas, and Austin more than once. I will say this one in San Antonio was my least favorite. The banchan (sides) were good. The spicy tofu soup just tasted like tomato, no kick at all, and I've always liked this soup at other Gens. The fried rice also just tasted like gochujang. Oddly the salad was mostly just cabbage no leafy lettuce or other soft greens. The meat was also very underwhelming, I'd say most this night were dry and again didn't remind me of quality I was used to. It also didn't help they were understaffed. We had waited at the front without help or getting checked in with for at least 15 minutes when there was hardly any customers there. Then when the rush came we noticed our server was basically working all the tables alone. He did still do a great job for how busy it was, and I'm pretty sure he was also new considering he didn't exactly know the menu too well. The inside of the restaurant does still look like any other Gen with its blue dark lights, but the food just was not on par to what I expected from them. Been here before when they first opened up with a group of 5 and it was busy but great service! Came back recently, a little but after lunch with my boyfriend, not too busy at all, but bad service. I often eat out at KBBQ places and understand the wait times but it felt like we were completely forgotten the entire time. The waiter lost our appetizers, they were taken to another table. Asked for a water refill, never got refilled, called the waiter and had to ask again. We asked for the check, was told the manager would come over and bring in. We waited about 15 minutes and then the manager came to ask how the experience was- no check and we had to ask for it again. Took my lady here for her Birthday and we were immediately taken by ambiance it struck the perfect balance of chill, intimate and entertaining. Our Server Jasmine was on top of it all; she was pleasantly and attentive without being overbearing and suggested recommendations that we thoroughly enjoyed. The food was absolutely amazing, we have a mix of appetizers, sides and the Premium Meats (Wagyu Beef, Marbled Short Ribs) that we cooked ourselves. Do yourself a favor. Don't miss the part. I believe this is the best quality of meat at an all you can eat. We got the premium deal which is a bit expensive. It is a LOT of food though! One thing I didn't like about this place is if you face the door even in the back of the restaurant the lighting from the outside is so bright you cannot see the person facing you at the table. Decent - the ramen is a tad bit spicy for me (I don't do spicy) however it was my favorite food of the place it was so good my lips and mouth were burning but in a delightful way! The apps & sides were the best part of the meal to us. Key point of it was not for this flavorful ramen I would not have been able to eat most of the food here. white rice was a bit dry. My family enjoyed their adult drink. Our unsweetened teas were mediocre & cloudy - slow for any refill. We thankfully have eaten at places with great cuts of meat & excellent cooks. Every cut of meat here was poor quality even the shrimp. After living in Las Vegas for almost 50 years where numerous authentic Korean restaurants exist, we are always on the search for a good Korean place. We hoped to finally find one here in S.A.. Here's what we found: The inside was clean and very modern. The booths and tables were bathed in a soft blue, neon light, and an upbeat selection of music played in the background. We were seated as soon as we walked in, and our server appeared almost immediately to take our drink orders. He gave us a few minutes to look at the menu (QR code/phone) while he grabbed our drinks. He dropped off our drinks along with a very tasty salad. My husband ordered beef belly, brisket, and a steak (all unseasoned and non-marinaded.) I ordered calamari rings, soondubu (I'll call it SDB for short), and spicy chicken. The waiter left to grab our selections and the banchan. My SDB and calamari came first. I was expecting raw calamari to place on the grill, but they were fried in panko and served with a sweet sauce. The calamari was cooked perfectly, probably far better than I'd do on the grill, so no complaints there. The SDB was unlike anything I'd tried before, but not in a good sense. Most SDB is made with small bits of meat or seafood bathed in a flavorful broth, filled with soft, soup tofu; this SDB had only three small rectangles of firm tofu, 3 or 4 thin slices of zucchini, no meat, and a very differently flavored, somewhat watery broth. The rice was not ready in the kitchen, so it was not served with the soup. I was disappointed and didn't eat the dish. The waiter returned with our meats and banchan. We were served potato salad, spicy radish, cabbage kimchi, sweet soy radish, and cucumber salad. No fish cake?? No sesame sprouts?? What Korean restaurant doesn't include those selections with the banchan?? Oh boy...where to begin? The potato salad was not what you'd expect; it had the consistency of watery mashed potatoes with (corn? cheese? who knows?) mixed in. One bite was enough for both of us! The kimchi was pretty underwhelming and not as fresh as we prefer. It reminded me of the quality you might find in a supermarket, not a Korean restaurant, but it was better than the others selections. The radish and cucumber veggies were both very limp and soft...much softer than usual, and didn't taste very fresh. This was literally the first time we didn't eat the banchan, and we normally ask for at least 1 refill of everything. Again, VERY disappointed! All the meats were fresh and extremely tender. The marinade on my chicken was nicely flavored and seasoned the meat well. We ate our fill of the meat. Would we return? No. Although the Korean restaurants here are far from the quality we had in LV, the others we've tried are FAR better than this one. Unfortunately, the decent ones are all located on the Northeast side of town, so I guess we'll be making that long trek again. Would we recommend this place? There were only three other patrons in the restaurant besides our party of 4. Our server and other employees of the restaurant were MIA for most of the time we were there. It took over 7 minutes for them to bring out our second round and longer as time progressed. I took my friends there to try Korean BBQ for the first time and in all honesty, they were not impressed. It took 10 minutes to order on Valentine's Day but once we ordered everything, all of the meats and dishes came out quickly. Water was refilled promptly. The price for dinner is $31.99 and the price is reasonable for the types of meats you can get. We like to get the pork belly, galbi, steak, shrimp, etc. Don't be shy to ask for more banchan. They give you a bowl of rice per person. I recommend getting the salad as well. The ambiance reminds me of a night club. The lights give it that setting. Don't forget to save room for a drink. Came here for a birthday party with a group of 6. We were seated immediately. Service was a bit slow. It took time to get a grill change. The meats that were my favorite were the red wine pork belly, and pork cheek! I got galbi but the meat was a bit thinner than I'm used to. Bulgogi tasted the usual same. My only real complaints is that when they're singing happy birthday to the other guests, it got a bit too loud. After saying that, there is nothing else positive. The quality of the food was bad. We paid $31.95 + $20 for the Premium dinner option. The meat was not of good quality and was not tasty at all. Appetizers: The dumplings were the only decent option that came directly from a bag. The calamari were overcooked. Side dishes: The white rice is dry and tasteless. They serve noodles that look like plastic and taste horrible. Service was the worst part because it took forever to take our order (25 minutes), and then we waited 20 more minutes to get the plates of raw meat. It shouldn't take that long when you have an almost empty restaurant. Well, after spending $112.47, I recommend that you don't waste your money and time going to this place. I let the waiter and the cashier know about the poor quality of food and service, and no one acknowledged it. Well, one more place is out of our radar. Wait! The waiter said, at least you tried it (of course, after throwing more than $100 into the garbage). The funny part is that I asked for a to-go box to bring the leftover meat (that was a lot) for my dog, and she said, sorry, we don't have carry-out boxes; how fresh that could be! Brought the family to celebrate the New Year and was so disappointed. At first, I thought maybe they were not staffed properly because it was a holiday, but I saw several employees standing around idle, so that wasn't the case. Food was mediocre at best. We are a family of five - they brought tiny dishes of ban chan - literally 2 pieces of Kim chee in one and a teaspoon sized scoop of mashed potatoes in another for all of us to share. Granted, they will bring more if you ask (may take a few reminders and about 10 minutes, but they won't charge extra ) but, c'mon. It is extremely cold in there. After being seated and noticing the draft, I asked to be moved to another table that didn't have that arctic blast under the vent (the restaurant was probably at 5% capacity at the time, so plenty of choices!) they responded, "oh yeah, other people complained about this table being very cold - I'll turn on your grill and you'll warm up." Nope. Still freezing. I ended up stopping mid meal to raid my car for jackets, scarves, and beach towels to bundle up. Food comes out very slowly, with reminders. We had to ask for fresh rice because the first batch was served cold and hard. The meats themselves were decently flavored, but cuts were....interesting and inconsistent. Randomly shaped scraps stuffed in bowls so you don't immediately notice. Restrooms are bizarre and not well serviced. Out of supplies, and clogged sinks. On top of an already poor experience, the bill reflected prices higher than the menu for drinks. On the menu, a large bottle of beer was $8.95 and they attempted to charge us $12.95. Their response - the printed menu is outdated. After insisting they not charge me for their error, and getting the manager involved, they eventually comped the drinks. Not how I wanted to bring in the New Year, but every dining experience for the rest of the year will be an improvement. Two stars - while speed, attention to detail, and common sense were lacking - there were a few employees who were friendly. Cuts of meats were questionable, and ban chan was mediocre- but we did enjoy some of the dishes. Didn't get food poisoning, so I suppose it could've been worse. Also note, unlike almost every other KBBQ place that I've ever been to, this restaurant does not offer a sauce, sides, and dessert bar. Food came out really quickly but I wouldn't recommend the Korean chicken they call KFC, it's mostly heavily seasoned breading, the chicken was hard to find and extremely dry inside.
