Cute little place to grab coffee. They had an interesting menu, obviously they had coffees, teas, etc. but they also had signature drinks that caught my eye. I tried the coffee sangria which was also recommended by the server. The thought of a sangria sounded interesting to me so I tried and it was refreshing with a hint of sweetness. A very tasteful coffee shop after my own first name. I was staying at the Godfrey so I always got Howell Coffee in the morning. There's usually a line but the baristas are super quick. I stuck with the iced coffee, kind of disappointed they didn't have cold brew even with their extensive and impressive menu. I was definitely surprised to see a hipster coffee joint outside of my hometown of LA but it was awesome. The employees definitely knew their stuff. There's also a pretty extensive retail area where you can stock up on coffee and purchase products for your favorite brew method. I stopped at this cafe to get some busy work done and I am so impressed by how hip, modern, trendy, and beautiful it is. Inside is very bright and spacious. It's connected to the Godfrey Hotel which is also beautiful on its own. I came on a day that they were doing a bring your own coffee bean event which I thought was very cute. They host a lot of cute and fun events every month... some of them being classes, tastings, or potlucks. They're all free to join at any time! They also have super tasty breakfast sandwiches (egg, tomato, cheese, arugula, aioli on English muffin...so. good.). This coffee shop is attached to the Godfrey hotel in downtown crossing. I had the ginger lemon iced tea which was a diluted version of lemonade but don't get me wrong, I liked it. Less sweet and more refreshing with a kick of caffeine. I asked the staff to recommend a pastry; she pointed out the croissant which I also ordered, but honestly it was bad. I was hungry so I got the egg frittata sandwich. It tasted decent and the combination of cheese, egg, roasted tomato and arugula was good , though I don't think the taste was memorably delicious. I wasn't expecting much. I went to a coffee shop in New Jersey that used George Howell beans and thought it was just ok. Of course, there's a lot more than the beans that make a good cup of coffee. I got their Ethiopian washed pour over (they didn't offer the Gesha even though they had it for sale in bags). Also got the spinach and mushroom quiche. I usually prefer natural process Ethiopian over washed but these particular beans were still very acidic and flavorful. The quiche was pretty good. Not too heavy on the cheese. Oh crap, I have a deadline! Oh crap, it's noon time -- what coffee shop will have reliable wifi? Gorge Howell to the rescue, not only did I find a strong, fast wifi network during a busy time, I was able to get some amazing coffee here as well. The Cortado I ordered was incredibly smooth and tasty and the little old fashioned mini Boston Creme donut I got was pretty good as well, but the coffee was definitely the winner here. Despite the more expensive pour over flavors, I think the drip down will do the trick just fine and they killed it with a great espresso. Bathrooms are out of the shop and to the left in the hotel lobby foyer. 5 stars for the reliable wifi and delicious coffee! read more

If you want nice light breakfast try their breakfast sandwich, Tomato Arugula and Cheddar. I'll do my best to explain - the sandwich has the perfect balance of ingredients. The eggs were seasoned and fluffy, vegetables were fresh, tomatoes were sweet, and the cheese wasn't so overwhelming. The bread of the sandwich was soft to bite through. Do not feel embarrassed pigging out! I felt like all of the flavors were dancing in my mouth. After I finished the sandwich, I wasn't too stuffed. It was good enough to not feel hungry until lunch. I love the atmosphere of this cafe shop. It's very open and clean. Large windows, light wooded floors, and simple front desk. The design of the cafe shop is very modern based on the art they used on their wall and the lighting choice. There were enough chairs to sit, BUT chargers? Good luck with that. Decided to give this place a shot since I keep walking by, but have never stopped in. I'll preface by saying that I'm a regular Vietnamese coffee drinker - strong and full of flavor. George Howell, fell very flat for me. In summary, we (my party and I) paid over $20 including tax for three drinks where the coffee was incredibly watered down. Price and coffee quality wise, I'd say it's a pass for me. THE DETAILS COFFEE: We came right in time for the start of the fall menu. We tried the Red Apple Red Eye, Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL), and Pour Over Genji Challah. The Red Apple Red Eye only tasted like apple cider with a little to no hint of espresso. I don't doubt that there was espresso in there since I did get a mini caffeine kick, but I wasn't expecting to consume 12oz of what basically is caffeinated cider. The PSL was also pretty disappointing for the primary reasons of tasting nothing like pumpkin spice and just a regular cafe au lait - severely underwhelming. The Pour Over was the most confusing. At first glance, it looked more like over-brewed black tea. Upon tasting it, it tasted more like glorified tea than it did coffee. The taste of the coffee itself was pleasant - slightly acidic with seemingly floral notes - but it was so watered down, it was hard to appreciate the coffee itself. Needless to say, we won't be coming back for coffee any time soon. PRICE: The Red Apple Red Eye was $6.50, PSL $6.25, and Pour Over $7. The most you get is somewhere between 12-16oz. Frankly, I think you could get more flavorful and greater volume of coffee at other coffee shops (even Starbucks) for cheaper. For watered down drinks, I would not pay this price again. SERVICE: This is really where the cafe location shines. The staff went above and beyond to try to accommodate every single patron we saw (ourselves included) that walked through the door when it came to remaining friendly and patient while also trying to have quick service. We never ended up approaching anyone about our orders since the place was absolutely PACKED when we got there and after we left (apparently Saturday morning isn't a great time - go figure). Either way, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they would've handled matter professionally. OVERALL: Long story short, friendly staff are the only reason why this review is getting two stars. Our coffee experience was well below sub-par and it was just too expensive to justify coming back again. A lot of people also ordered pastries and food with their drinks, and (personally) I think you're better off heading to Gracenote, Thinking Cup, or Bakey if you're looking for better coffee with some pastries. read more

This is a great coffee option in the Downtown Crossing area. Modern decor with plenty of study space. You can also use the seating options in the lobby of the Godfrey Hotel (attached to the cafe). We ordered Cortados ($3.25) and they were excellent. The pricing is pretty comparable to Jaho and Caffe Nero (other coffee shops in the area). George Howell is one of the best coffee roasters in the area. Their beans are well-roasted (ie not overly roasted), so that each single origin bean actually has a unique, distinct flavor profile. When you drink their coffee black, there is still a natural sweetness from the bean. They offer a wide variety of beans from Africa, South/Central America, and even occasionally the Middle East (the rare Yemen), and so far, I've never been disappointed by their products. read more

My iced latte with oat milk came out to $6.50ish so I made sure to make my stay worthwhile. The latte was good, nothing overly special but I appreciated the ample seating. You can sit inside the lobby of the hotel thats adjacent to the coffee shop.They have lots of outlets and great wifi connection (unlimited- was surprised caffe nero, that's right around the corner, has 3 hour limit). ALSO really appreciated the hotel's super clean bathroom. Def will be back whenever I need to study! I stayed for about 4 hours and got a lot done. read more

My friend recommended this place to us. All we wanted was some hipster coffee in Boston, and our wish was granted. They have several different locations, but this one is close to Boston Common and Boston Public Garden - perfect for grabbing a coffee and heading over to the park for some weekend sunshine! We walked in and were welcomed by free coffee samples, their drip coffee (either Ethiopian or Columbian) - which was so good! However, we wanted our usual almond lattes, and they did not disappoint. It was super smooth and tasty. I really love the modern hispter vibe of this coffee shop. I'd love to just come here in the morning and bring a book or newspaper to read. The service is the most standout. Usually at hipster coffee shops (I should probably say, in San Francisco, where I am from), the workers are so MEH. They are usually rude, hate delivering quality customer service, and look like they don't want to serve you at all. HOWEVER, at George Howell Coffee, they were extremely friendly. We actually had a really funny conversation at the cashier. WOW! Guess the free coffee samples doesn't hurt either. Would totally recommend this place for coffee lovers!!! Their coffee is amazing! It's so fragrant and smooth. I've tried their latte, affogato, and "nuttin serious" (banana infused coffee with cereal milk and miso Nutella !!), and I was blown away. They have a selection of drip coffees that I want to try and other creative drinks like "coffee sangria". It's conveniently located in the middle of downtown, and it's actually connected to the Godfrey hotel. It was quiet, and a lot of people were working there. Most cafes and coffee shops in Boston are designed more for studying or for quick grab and go for students, but the coffee here was high quality, delicious, and expertly made. Delicious coffee in a tiny little coffee shop inside a large hotel. We ordered one of their speciality drinks that had orange peel and it was such a good pint sized drink. Although it was small, it provides enough flavor to warrant the $6 price. It looks like they have regulars that come in and may be more familiar with their drinks or their style craft and I probably wouldn't go there for the staff, but the one drink I had was good so I'd go back for that if I am ever in Boston again. read more

I was so happy that George Howell opened at a café in Boston. I used to have it in New York City. After I ordered a hot coffee in downtown Boston location and realized it was too hot on a hot day, I asked a barista for a cup of ice. They directed me to check the other end. Since my laptop and bag would be off my eyesight if I go to the cashier location. I grabbed all my stuff and reconfirmed with them that if I should go to the line and ask the cashier, they said they could do it this time. Why didn't they just give me the ice at my first request? You probably won't enjoy the coffee here too much if you frequent Starbucks. I first discovered George Howell coffee when I was dragged to a coffee lecture presented by George himself. Instead of roasting the coffee beans super dark and only have a strong smoky/roasting flavor, George prefers a lighter roast so that other delicious flavor notes (fruity, acidity, sweetness, floral....) that highlight different characteristics of coffee itself. I've purchased a few different bags of coffee to enjoy at home and they each have distinct taste and really made me to re-think coffee (not just something to keep you awake :). The store in downtown crossing is spacious and chic. I came in on a early Saturday morning and got a cup of pour over Mamuto and a perfectly flaky butter croissant (their pasties can be pricey, but they are often very good!). Stumbled upon this coffee shop walking to the downtown crossing t stop and thought it was so cute, I wanted to give it a try! Before even trying the coffee a try I fell in love. The decor is so cute, there are many people sitting on tables doing work and relaxing, and the baristas seemed so happy and were dancing around. Then I saw all the freshly baked goods and they all looked beautiful and so interesting!! It took a lot of willpower not to order something, but I know I will be back to try something soon! I noticed that the coffee shop only uses reusable metal straws, develops relationships with the coffee farmers, and sells fair trade chocolate. Spending money getting a drink I love (cappuccino) in a local business that values social responsibility and environmental sustainability never felt so good! I couldn't keep my thoughts to myself and blurred out how excited I was about this place, and the baristas were so friendly and started talking to me about the coffee shop after hearing what I had to say. It was so cool to see the original (frozen frappe) in a granita machine after just being in Israel and seeing it everywhere there! I asked if the owner had any connection to Israel because of this product (the baristas didn't think so) but they did mention that "the original" was one of the first frozen coffee drinks in the US, and stated that Starbucks even bought the recipe from George Howell for their Frappuccinos! I also loved that they sell interesting loose leaf teas in tea pots, and also offer unique signature drinks (I hope to try both of these options). It was also nice to see that George Howell sells roasts for those looking for a more substantial meal. About the cappuccino (I ordered a half caffeinated version because I don't like my coffee very strong) and I still found it very rich, even though I still liked it! Definitely not my favorite cappuccino I've ever had, but because of my overall experience (and the other offerings/features at this cute coffee shop, it definitely deserves a 5 star rating from me!)
