I'm a little disappointed with Georgia James. Just recently my gals and I started doing fancy girl's night out and next on the list was Georgia James. So we came here for girls night this past Saturday evening and celebrated a birthday as well. The entire experience was a little confusing to say the least. There's valet since Montrose is very limited on parking. We parked a couple feet in the back and just walked right on over. Prior to coming, we had talked about the Baller Board that required at least 4 people to enjoy, but our waiter Kevin, advised against it. Instead he recommended that we should just get a bunch of things to share vs getting the Baller Board. Unfortunately, a couple of us were still hungry after our meal, and kept thinking..."Should we have ended up getting the Baller Board after all???" Service started out pretty good and then it just spiraled down from there. Throughout the night, you could tell our server Kevin was not enjoying our company Saturday evening. He made it clear with his non-verbal actions that we were not of his time. I mean, I can definitely see how and why, since we took tons and tons of photos throughout the night. Photos of our food to post on yelp and social media as well as our group. I mean, how often do you get to dress up and eat at a nice establishment? Unless you're ballin. In which we are not. I mean, last month we were at Brenner's and they loved us. They even suggested best places to take photos and service was PHENOMENAL. But compared to GJ, if I was gonna pay for top notch food, I would hope to pay for top notch service. Ya feel? Throughout the night, I kept telling the girls that it felt like we were at a dive bar instead of a nice fancy restaurant. I was completely confused as to where we were at. I'm not completely sure if this was a nice romantic spot or some divey bar with all types of music to please the crowd. Music went from chill rap, to rock, to alternative, to soul. Hello? Where am I? Let's get on to the food: My two favorite side dishes were definitely the Brussels Sprouts with Pig Ears, and the smashed and new fried potatoes. We ordered one brussels sprouts to start and I'm so glad we did because it was SO GOOD. And we got another order with our entrees. The potatoes had such an amazing amount of mashed goodness and French fry crunch texture. YUM As for the mushrooms, they were a little on the salty side, so I didn't eat much of it. For our entrees, we got the King Crab Legs, 100 day hanger steak, and theWagyu Zabuton. King Crab Legs: GJ does all the work! No need to use your hands to crack open those legs! Nicely seasoned and tons of meat! For the meats that we ordered, it was recommended that you order it medium, and to my surprise, it was very good that it was cooked that way. Definitely recommend! 100 day hanger steak was definitely one of my favorite entrée dishes! It was so tender and nicely seasoned. They cut up the pieces into nice fat chunks so that all of us could share. I was a little disappointed with the Wagyu Zabuton. It was a little too much charred for my taste. Still good but the way it was cooked threw me off. When it came to dessert, our waiter still seemed annoyed. Almost as if he was ready for us to leave. He brought out the dessert menu, gave us some time, then came back and picked up the menus. Didn't bother to ask us if we had decided or recommended us anything. He kind of just picked it up and then left. Then he came back with the checks, and we had mentioned his opinion on the desserts. He kind of just picked up the check and crumpled it up and THEN told us what desserts would sound good. We ended up with the roasted banana and cream brûlée. I love cream brûlée but it didn't wow me. Both were OK in my opinion. They're a popular item but I kind of just thought it was ok. For any special occasion, they definitely don't give out free desserts. So I wouldn't really expect anything. Though you do get a polaroid picture taken. Just be aware that 99% of the time, due to lighting, they won't even come out. You also won't know until you receive your check. Only 3 of our photos came out, though very blurry or just blacked out. I'm glad I got to try this place, but the overall experience was completely confusing and our service was not phenomenal for the price I am paying. read more

Had a surprise Valentine's dinner here and it was great! Didn't even know about the place or the chef, but our knowledgeable waiter Alex filled us in. He also made some recommendations we really enjoyed. We started with the crab toast and the Caesar. I recommend both, they were so good! The Caesar is making my mouth water thinking about it. My husband really enjoyed the 100 day dry aged hanger steak and I liked my off menu strip steak. I didn't love that it was finished with olive oil as it was too olivey for me, but could be my pregnancy taste buds. It was a fun experience and would definitely go back. I parked in the back of the restaurant on the street. Be careful for parking signs and fire hydrants. We came for the off menu Baller board, there's rumors that it is about $100pp, must have at least 4 people, and it's all chef's pick. Our server advised against it, and recommended we just order what we want and share from there. I mean, we ordered, but we were still hungry after. So then we wondered if we should've gotten the baller board after all.. sigh Let me start with some cons then move forward. Service was not that great. We can tell our server did not like us that much, maybe because we were taking photos of our food so we can post on Yelp. That pretty much affected us with service the remainder of the night with service. I understand he probably had a long day, but it's a little disheartening. Because we are under impression we are paying for service too Music selection was so confusing to set the tone... it first started with some biggie smalls, (I love biggie), then some rock and alternative music, then back to Lauryn Hill.. I'm not sure if they were trying to please all crowds. My favorite side dish was a tough one. My whole table raved about brussel sprouts. Crispy, with pork ears. Good flavor, It compliments each other. Because we do not like boiled brussels! According to GJ everyone orders it and loves it! Smashed and new fried potatoes was my favorite. The only downfall is that .. you want more! It's crispy, with a nice flavor. I wouldn't hesitate on ordering two brussels and two potatoes! Mushrooms were salty in some bites. It pairs well overall. Crab legs, look amazing in photos, taste great too! Definitely shareable! No heavy flavor of garlic, or spices, so it's light and tasteful The 100 day hanger steak is pleasant but the wagyu zabuton is delightful, after you take a bite.. it's an instant love attraction. You then think to yourself... you'll never want anything other than 44 farms. They recommend that you order medium... I definitely agree! All steaks on menu are 44 Farms, and once you have 44 farms you never go back. Ever!!!!! They have a selection of fine wines, and the desserts we ordered are roasted banana (favorite) and cream brûlée. I love cream brûlée but I wouldn't order that again. The roasted banana is a definite order again! The torched sugar on bananas was tasteful, can't taste peanut butter that much, but the crust is hard. We dined at Georgia James based on reviews and word of mouth. Unfortunately we did not have an enjoyable experience. The ambiance and service were nice, however we left feeling underwhelmed. I ordered the long bone in and my wife ordered the New York strip, both medium, which we both had to send back since they were both undercooked. When the steaks came back, they lacked flavor (we have dined at all major steakhouses in the Houston area). Our son ordered the fried chicken, which tasted bland and was not crispy. Overall, with all of the competition and our experiences in the Houston area for steakhouses, we left Georgia James disappointed - consistency is a virtue that all restaurants should abide by to ensure their reputation meets the expectations of its customers. This was the best service I have ever received. The family and I were in Texas on vacation. I googled, "best Texas steakhouse in Houston," and this place was one that popped up. I figured Texas steakhouse was a must while we were visiting. I don't know what I thought a "Texas Steakhouse" was, but whatever I thought it was, this place was not it. This is what I would consider a top tier steakhouse, but I have eaten at these kind of places before and never been impressed; especially, for the price. Georgia James, is now the exception. The food was excellent, as it should be for a place advertised at this caliber, but the service was over the top. I have eaten all over the country, and never have I received service this good. I asked for a table outside in the shade. They made up a table on the balcony, just for us. I felt like the management team were the ones serving us. AMAZING. The service was impeccable to start. We went for HRW so we started off with appetizers. The starter bread and SEASONED BEEF TALLOW yes you read that right was TO DIE FOR. The redfish salad is amazing and so is the slab salad. The bacon sausage and hash browns were amazing. Then the steaks were perfectly seasoned. Oh and the brussel sprouts were crispy and great. The cajun vinaigrette made them amazing. We got all 3 desserts to try. The pineapple sorbet was the perfect refreshment and the chocolate cake was sweet without a toothache. Wow. I mean wow. This might have been the worst meal I have EVER had in Houston. I am still shocked at how terrible the food at this place is, and angry that we spent money on this place. Also, I am extremely confused as to why/how this place is popular. The only thing I can think of was it was much better before it moved to this location. Let's start with the atmosphere. I'm sorry, but am I dining in the lobby of a Holiday Inn? I swear the new buildout feels like you are in the lobby of a mid tier hotel. There were bright lights on the entire time--no mood lighting here! Stale atmosphere. They have tiny booths that have zero character and look like they were ordered from some restaurant big-box surplus store. This definitely does not have the romantic or swanky vibe of a 5 star steakhouse. But whatever, I was willing to overlook the terrible décor if the food was worth the hype. Well spoiler alert, it was not. In fact, it was shockingly bad. We have eaten numerous meals at Vic & Anthonys, Steak 48, B&B Butchers, and Pappas steakhouse. Georgia James often was brought up in the company of places like those so we expected similar quality food, especially since GJ is priced similarly to all of those restaurants (i.e $$$$$). Before ordering our steak, we had a conversation with the waiter about how recently, when we have ordered medium rare steak at other high end steakhouses here, they tend to come out much more on the rare/raw side (like seared with a totally raw center), and that we like a true medium rare (slightly warm red center). The waiter assured us that they cook a true medium rare and that it sounds like at the other places they made a mistake. So we went ahead and ordered it medium rare. Well, it came out completely raw. The odd thing about this is that they even sliced it for us since we would be splitting it, so how did they not notice how raw it was? When the waiter came over we showed him the meat and he agreed it was very undercooked. He said he would get us a new steak right away. I hate to say it but the second steak came out the exact same way. It was gross. I decided it wasn't worth arguing with them again so we agreed we would just eat it. This RIBEYE MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE WORST STEAK I HAVE EVER EATEN IN MY LIFE. I mean I have had better steaks at a TEXAS ROADHOUSE FOR CHRISTS SAKE. It was soooo tough. Terribly marbled. Zero flavor. In summary it was clear that it was just a terrible quality piece of meat. Soo so so disappointing when you're spending $75 on a ribeye. The same ribeye at V&A's or Steak 48 would BLOW YOUR MIND. This was bad. So bad. **I will admit, they did take our steak off the bill because of the whole raw/undercooked debacle so I will give them that, but that is the only positive thing I will say** Now on to the sides. My favorite side at a steakhouse is Au Gratin Potatoes, so we obviously had to try them here. They too were terrible. I mean they tasted like they were made with nacho cheese or Velveeta or something. YUCKKKK. They also were served with Sour Cream or something like that--why? Nobody does that for au gratin potatoes. The brussels sprouts were not terrible but they definitely weren't good. They were very balsamic-y and salty but at least they were stomachable. The side they described as "fancy hamburger helper" (which they charge $17 for btw) tastes exactly like normal hamburger helper--so dumb. The one food that was actually very good was our appetizer--the Viet-Cajun Roasted Oysters. However, they charge $35 for 6 very tiny oysters with two very small pieces of bread--- like are you kidding me? Come on. Anyways, all in all this was a horrible experience. We will definitely never come back here and will tell all of our friends to stay away. TLDR: Cons: atmosphere, nearly all of the food we ate, steak was legitimately horrible, sides were also very bad. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical the valet parking was a bit difficult and it is Very Very Very tight in there. The tables are practically stacked on top of each other. I could literally turn and tap a person on the shoulder sitting at the next table. However, there food definitely made up for it. Our waiter Jonathan was very pleasant and thorough with explaining the menu and providing recommendations. The espresso martini...chefs kiss! The meat was was very seasoned and the all of the sides that we decided to get were delicious. We opted for the creamed greens, corn, brussels sprouts, and potatoes. This place is the missing piece of the story in Pulp Fiction! When Vincent and Jules open the briefcase and you see the mysterious light -- it is actually food from Georgia James! Everything about the dining experience pleasantly surprised me. From the magical candle that turned out to be delicious to the steaks, sides, and cocktails. Everything that we tried hit above the mark. Prior to dining, we enjoyed some cocktails at the bar. The bartender was VERY talented and knowledgeable. I had really high hopes given that this was my first experience at a Chris Shepard restaurant. My boyfriend and I decided to skip the crowds and instead book a 10PM seating to ring in the new year in a more intimate environment. We looked at quite a handful of different restaurants offering NYE menus with 3-4 courses, but decided on this one. Most of these dinners were priced around the same and while this one just barely above average at $125 per person, the service fees of about $35 per person really took it over the top - dinner ended up totaling around $325 BEFORE drinks and there was sadly not a complimentary champagne toast at midnight. Someone from the kitchen pass announced that we could purchase some from the bar if we were interested and then proceeded to count down from 10. Given the price point, we were also disappointed with the quality of service and overall lack of attentiveness of our server. My boyfriend and I sat next to each other at a square table rather than across from one another and conversed almost non-stop the entire night. Our waiter replaced silverware between each course, but inserted his arms between us instead of working from across the table. The other servers mixed up which dish was ordered by who for 3 of the 4 courses. The actual food was delightful for the bites that weren't too salty. The biggest disappointment from that night was how salty the food was. This is one of the reasons I tend to avoid steakhouses, but I figured this one was worth a shot. Food review as follows: 1. Murder Point oysters: topped with creme fraiche and hackleback caviar, this was an indulgent dish that I delighted in consuming. Some say it's a cardinal offense to eat oysters any method other than plain and raw, but THIS was heavenly. 2. Country ham: comes with Lone Star beer cheddar cheese that is topped with a light helping of sugar and torched to create a thin bruleed crunch. Such a fun idea for the cheese and the ham was delicious as well. 3. Shaved wagyu short rib: not sure what grade wagyu this was but it wasn't as good as the melt in your mouth kind - I guess they would have advertised if it was. We enjoyed the spicy Asian flavors, but the boyfriend left almost all of the peppers on the plate stating that there were too many. They would have been more appealing if they were fried with a very light breading to make them appear and actually be more edible if that was the intention - would work with the Asian theme too. 4. Foie gras: tied with the oysters as my favorite course for the night. The foie was a huge portion and cooked to buttery perfection. It would have literally melted in my mouth had there not been a thin sear on the outside. Taking bites of it with the small "salad" at underneath was one of the best combinations of flavors I had ever encountered. The greens/veggies had a tinge of acidity and provided just enough texture to contrast and compliment the already mouthwatering foie. 5. Boudin stuffed quail: good portion with 3 quail legs, but overly salty and too strong of a mustard cream to really enjoy the boudin and the natural taste of the quail. 6. 44 Farms NY strip: I love steaks from 44 Farms, but a steak is only as good as its seasoning and this strip was too salty, unfortunately. Some parts were comparatively "under-seasoned" and tasted very very good. The mashed potatoes were a nice pureed consistency that was made thicker with the addition of some cheese - this was good minus that it was too salty as well. 7. Strawberry champagne panna cotta: as with some of the underwhelming dishes for the night, the panna cotta was inconsistent throughout. A couple bites from the jelly top tasted too strongly of alcohol while other areas were milder tasting and allowed the strawberry and actual champagne flavors to show through. The gelatin top was poorly designed as the panna cotta bottom squishes out when trying to cut through it. 8. Meyer lemon tart: this was mediocre. The crust was awfully hard to cut through without really putting some force into the silverware. Review #35 Now opened as of 7 weeks (dined December 2018). In the old Underbelly spot, but don't worry, Underbelly has moved down the street under a new concept called UB Preserv. Now in it's Underbelly's old location comes the mouthwatering, Georgia James. From what I hear it is named after award winning Chef's Chris Shepherds parents, but don't quote me on that. If you are new to Houston and don't know who Chris Shepherd is, then shame on you. He hit Houston like a firestorm with his succulent restaurants, has won several awards, and well, just pretty darn famous IMO. So let's get down to the ins and outs (mostly ins) of my dining experience. I highly suggest you make reservations weeks if not a month(s) in advance. Downfall, I had reservations for 7:30 on a Thursday night. The hostess said they were running about 20 minutes behind. Okay, fine, so will have a drink at the bar. Well, the drink ended up not being one, but two. 45 minutes later I see Chris Shepherd walking around. I stopped him and mentioned that we had reservations and have been waiting for 45 minutes. Very kindly, he mentioned that folks are just aren't getting up after their meal this evening. Everyone is just hanging out at their tables so to speak. He apologized and said he would try to speed up the process. Minutes later the GM stopped us and apologized and said the first portion of our meal is on the house. Now, that's the way to run a restaurant! Hands down! Bar area, packed for a Thursday night, however the bartenders were prompt and attentive. Before eating they bring you hot towels (nice - Japanese style - I like it). Every table receives bread. The loaf is huge For starters we had the bacon sausage hash browns. Mega delish, but a little spicy for me. I don't do spicy so well. My friend LOVED them. Apparently they are a top seller. We also had the roasted gulf oyster. Oh my jesus they were mouthwatering! It came with 8 if I remember correctly, but i could have eaten 20. I ordered the Wagu Zabuton. Our waiter explained they do not have a filet, however this was the closest option. The steak comes sliced and tastes ridiculous! I would highly recommend! We also ordered the brussel sprouts. Some of the best I have tasted. I want the recipe. I hear Chris Shepherd is coming out with a cookbook and please baby jesus let the brussel sprouts be in the book!! My friend ordered the wood fired red fish because we wanted something different. This too was a party in my mouth. Every so often we would see charcuterie board the length of my leg go by with countless meats. If you are a party of 4 or more you can order this off the menu insanity. Every dish had an explosion of flavors. You have to try for yourself. Salads, apps, sides, raw bar, steaks, fish, etc. The wait staff were exceptional, the bartenders were great. Meats being dry aging hang window around the restaurant. 5/5 for sure. This just might be the best restaurant I have ever eaten at. If anything, top 3. The James Beard Award winning chef does not disappoint. We started with the Viet Cajun Oysters which were delicious! There was a very long wait for our party even after making a reservation but we enjoyed excellent drinks from the bar while waiting. The manager was very apologetic and nice enough to include a complimentary appetizer and a couple of extra items on our entree. We ordered the Baller Board for our entree which more than fed the 9 of us. It was Ginormous. Something I've never had before. Everything included on it was fantastic. The lobster...the long bone ribeye...the Wagyu...the porterhouse...the country ham...omg. The meats were all sliced which made it perfect for sharing. Every side included was delicious. The service was above and beyond; I loved the area and the decor of the restaurant so I was expecting their food to match the environment but I was wrong. We got the uni panna cotta, smashed fried potatoes, mussels and chorizo appetizer, and some steak and mushrooms. Uni panna cotta definitely tasted like uni. But also peanuts. And peanut butter. And super salty. With some sweet stuff. So think like... Uni flavored peanut butter and jelly. My brother and I do not recommend. The mussels and chorizo dish was good! The broth was delicious enough to make us want to drink from the bowl and even dip the rest of our bread in it. Brisket oil, WHO? I totally do not remember what cut of meat we ordered so I'm gonna say it was ribeye and it had some pieces of filet stuck to the bone so YAY US! It was pretty good but not as flavorful as we would like. We asked our server to cut the steak for us and he gave us thick, huge pieces hahaha! That's alright. It was nice of him. I wish I could do 3.5 stars... service was very good but the food was hit or miss. We started with the Gulf Coast Oysters which were good but not great. The Smoked Redfish Dip was 5/5, so good! The Caesar Salad is big enough to share for even more than two people. Now the steaks we thought were just ok. Nothing exceptional... we did the ribeye and they had a special filet that was off the menu. But the Loaded Au Gratin potatoes were 5/5!! DO NOT get the brown butter mushrooms. They are absolutely terrible. We finished it off with a Pecan Pie which was pretty solid... 4/5. Had a great dinner here last night, this is the old Underbelly location right next to Hay Merchant. Another one of Chris Shepherd's newest ventures. I had high expectations and I was not disappointed. They did some remodeling but I can still see reminisce of UB inside. We had a party of four and we were seated a in smaller room and then we realized it was the old dart room of Hay Merchant. The lighting was dim and our server was great. She went through the whole menu very thoroughly, I was impressed. They had 3 different choices for ordering, 1. Ala carte 2. Servers choice of the menu with your influence 3. Chef's choice with current secret menu items. We opted to be boring and did ala carte. We started worth eh oysters and the hammery, oysters were good but the hammery was great! They had caramelized cheddar that was to die for with the ham. For our entrees, we had the red fish, wet aged ribeye, wagyu zabutan with sides of whipped potatoes and Brussels sprouts. Everything was great. They tend to go more rare on their steaks, which I don't mind. My boyfriend and I both order medium rare but it really looked more rare. Georgia James is always a personal favorite of ours... it's fine dining, but never pretentious. I feel as comfortable here eating a full on baller board steak dinner as I do just grabbing some drinks and apps at the bar. Our most recent trip here, we swung by the bar to try their newest fish dip app and viet cajun oysters, and as usualy we were not disappointed. Highly recommend coming here for business meals and for date nights. If you're looking to splurge, and if you're really hungry with a group of friends... look into the baller board for a smorgasbord omakase of meats and sides. read more

For a upscale steak house. The foos is very mediocre. The ribeye is thin, over salted and not tender at all. Waited over an hour and half for our food to come. Overall experience was terrible. Even after the serve told us multiple times the manager would come and talk to us, but she never showed up to talk to us. (It's Lisa). Would never go again. Better go to steak 48 or mastros. The food and service are so much better for your money. Can not recommend this place to anyone. Also the bathroom only had 1 urinal with pee all over the floor. read more

Mediocre steaks. The new venue is beautiful and seats are very comfortable. I remember the food was much better at the previous location, was looking forward to this dinner. We didn't loved any of the dishes we ordered last night (3 app, 2 steaks, 2 sides) bone marrow were very very salty, thankfully that was comped to us. Steaks were tough and some part difficult to chew, lacking flavor. Got the dry age steak don't recall the cut, off menu, and the Zabuton wagyu to try since that was new for us. I understand those are meatier cuts but still expected a richer taste with it being wagyu and dry aged. Bland. Also disappointed in the mushroom side dish, very salty, did not achieve the expected toasty, rich and nutty flavors. Took a friend here for his Birthday, and all in all it was a nice evening. The oysters seemed to meet everyone's expectation, and the steaks came out perfectly. The tuna tartare was spoiled by the soy sauce that could easily have been served on the side. The sommelier helped us choose a nice bottle of wine which matched the dinner well. This is not a restaurant for the faint of heart. Be prepared to indulge in true master chef cuisine. We started our adventure with crafted cocktails. Appetizers were raw oysters and roasted oysters. The charcuterie board should not be skipped either! We then opted for the chefs choice platter. The pictures say it all! There was more than enough to feed 8. Desserts were just as wonderful. My husband and I had a lovely evening recently at Georgia James, celebrating a new job. The servers made it a truly spectacular night- Berenice took great care of us, checking on us just enough and making sure that everything was just right. We shared the Viet-Cajun oysters and they were phenomenal. We also enjoyed the Chateaubriand off-menu special, and they really upped the wow factor with a table-side presentation. It all made for a very special evening and we will definitely be back for our next special occasion! read more

I don't think this place is quite 5 stars, but it's also not 4 stars - more like 4.5, but I just rounded up because the service and ambiance made the experience. Parking lot is behind the restaurant - it's not big but there is also valet available. Viet Cajun toasted oysters were delicious! It was a little salty, but I'm a salty bish so I enjoyed them. That on top of a toasted piece of bread was the perfect balance. Would recommend Shishito & shaved waygu short ribs were good, but not like OMG delicious. The flavor was good tho, I'm just not a huge fan of those peppers. They do have the cucumbers like din tai Fung scattered in there so that was a nice surprise! GJ French onion burger - the burger was good! Well cooked and the sauce was unique. A mix of horseradish and something else it seemed - so if you don't like that taste, I would stay away. The French fries it came with were so good!!! Extra crispy - I like that Waygu zabuton - I really loved how it was nicely charred on the outside, definitely not something I can do at home. Decided to go to Georgia James to celebrate the father in-laws birthday, as this place has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Houston but the experience was quite different than the many times I have come before. First, this was my first time since the change of management so I was extremely disappointed when they told me the beef tallow with bread is something GJ no longer does. To me this was one of the biggest differentiators compared to other steakhouses as this market is very competitive. Secondly, the service compared to my previous visits was extremely lackluster- unfamiliarity with the specials, very little experience, proven by the 15 minutes it took to open a wine bottle due to the fact that she had just done her nails, cold Brussels sprouts, and a steak topping that arrived 15 minutes after the steak was served that was clearly missed. For GJ I expect more, for a $500 meal for 4 I expect more. read more

I made reservations via Resy weeks in advance stating it was for my birthday. I was running a few min behind and alerted the restaurant and they stated that was fine. We arrived at 7:18 for a 7:15 reservation. It was about 3 couples in the restaurant and a large party in an enclosed room. Our waitress was very friendly and explained the menu well. Around 7:30 the restaurant filled up quickly, at least 7 or 8 couples or parties arrived around the same time. I ordered the smoked red fish dip, and the fried holmes, my husband ordered the ribeye with the loaded potatoes au gratin. Now my food was delicious and so was the ribeye but the potatoes were flavorless. Upon letting our now-busy waitress know she stated "Well it's just potatoes and cheese" - we compared it to a Wendy's baked potato. She said she would remove it from our bill. We ordered the banana pudding for dessert. Lots of people were ordering desserts that were delivered with a candle on top. My waitress returned with mine and just slid it on the table (no candle) no mention of birthday at all. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed. My husband flagged her down and asked her to put a candle on top since it was my birthday. she came back and tried to melt it to the plate (failure), so then she just stuck it in the dessert and walked away. --- ugh --- for the money you spend there it should feel like an unforgettable (good) experience. Perfectly executed. I could stop with those two words. Rarely is a dining experience flawless but tonight marked one of those nights. I should disclose that I am a huge fan of Chris Shepherd because of all that he does in the community. Our server greeted us promptly with the standard offering of filtered water or sparkling. We were then provided with menus, and a candle was placed on the table. Our water arrived with sourdough bread from Breadman Baking Co. The candle wick was then removed and we were told that the oil in the container was a seasoned tallow for dipping the bread, which is a nice way of saying rendered beef fat. Truly decadent. And the perfect way to start a gastronomical journey led in a way that only Chris Shepherd could take you on. We followed the tallow with the Viet Cajun roasted oysters. A half dozen oysters roasted in a citrusy garlic cajun butter finished off with a dash of nuoc mam and a couple of small garlic toasts, perfect for sopping up the leftover sauce. The sauce was so good I joked with our server that I was half tempted to just drink the rest with a spoon to which he replied "you wouldn't be the first if you did." It was that good. We split the caesar salad which was a good call because it is essentially a head of romaine lettuce tossed with caesar dressing, freshly shaved parmesan, and cracked black pepper. The lettuce leaves are served whole which made for a nice dramatic presentation. My first thought was that for $20 they could at least cut the lettuce, but I was reminded by my wife that would have taken away from the presentation. Oysters? Check. Salad? Check. But why were we really here? For the steaks of course and they did not disappoint. I opted for the medium rare ribeye from 44 Farms and my wife went for the off the menu medium-rare plus A5 wagyu from J-C Ranch. Our server described precisely the look and temperature of each to make sure that is how we wanted our steaks to look. Not in the "that's gonna' be a warm red center" kind of description. In the "so you would like it warm red in the center and turning slightly pink around the edges, with a nice seared crust?" When the steaks arrived, it was almost as if he had looked at our steaks in advance and then described them. There was no "do you mind cutting into your steaks to make sure they're perfect?" when they steaks came because he knew they were. And they were. They were so perfect that when I asked my wife if she wanted to try mine she said "no." She said no. She never says no. She said "no" tonight because hers was perfect and she didn't want to risk eating something less than perfect. For those still reading, our choice of sides were the charred corn and the smashed and fried or fried and smashed new potatoes. Both were excellent enough to stand on their own but were also perfect accompaniments to the steaks. Dessert was the apple crostini and honestly, if there has to be a low point, this was it. The apple crostini to vanilla ice cream ratio was off. The crostini was a touch dry and could have benefitted from just a wee little bit more ice cream. I know, that's pretty nitpicky. The restaurant has a great vibe to it overall as well. There was a family with two young kids a few tables away. Another family a table away with what appeared to be grown kids and their partners visiting their parents for the long weekend. Lots of couples on dates. Attire seemed to range from smart casual to semi-dressy. It has such a comfortable and welcoming feeling that it makes you want to dine there every day. Service was such that we never wanted for anything. Water glasses stayed filled. Wine recommendations were spot on. The check comes in an envelope with the Georgia James seal emblazened in wax as just a subtle reminder that you are at some place special. It is, indeed, some place special. read more

Dine-in post COVID reopen: This was our first time dining here. We picked it because it's my husbands birthday. First, they will charge a $20/ per person deposit during the reservation. When we got there, we got a drink each. Did I think my Birds and the Bees was tasty, yes, but the price for the size was steep. My husband enjoyed his drink, but only got one. We got the Marinated Shrimp. I dint like it, but my husband did! Again, the price for the dish was pretty high for what we received. My husband got the ribeye and enjoyed it very much. We got the mashed and fried potatoes in the side. And I got the burger. When I got the burger it was just barely over raw on the inside and I had to take it back. But also, that's it, cheeses, carmelized onions, burger on a toasted bun for $26!!! We got our dessert to go because we had to get to the sitter. Honestly, I love their other concepts more. Way more. Give me a smaller portion but put more risk into the dish. The experience lacked the passion that the other restaurants of this Chef has. Georgia James is now perched among the list of most disappointing restaurants in Houston. They had been on my to-do list for a while so I was excited to have date night here. The excitement was unnecessary . Wine was $150 and was very flat, nothing special. The wine probably retails for $60-$70 and was still disappointing. Food - The appetizer was comical. it was burnt Jimmy Dean sausage with a wedge potato. I believe there was an egg sauce. Should have had something else - anything else. Steak - bland and overcooked. No seasoning. Fish - The fish was the highlight but it was served over take out noodles that didn't have much going for them. I would not go back nor would I recommend this place to anyone. There are lots of places you can go at this price point and actually enjoy your dinner. read more
