The days are long gone where you can have a "cheap" dim sum lunch, could you believe that the average price was around than $2 per dish just 5 years ago? Ginger and Garlic is on the site where Mei Sum was and after that Good Fortune restaurant. For the dim sum, it's in the middle of the expected price range for Honolulu Chinatown dim sum @ $3.45 for most dishes. Tai Pan and Mei Sum are on the higher end around $3.85 per dish and on the low end, Won Kee and Golden Palace at $3.25 and $2.50 respectively. Most dim sum dishes are done pretty well but no standouts. For the price, it's a pretty good deal. The noodle dishes portions are very generous, noodles are crispy. Expect to pay around $10. Customer service is excellent, with tea filled and empty dishes picked up promptly. The staff will patiently help you in case you are a dim sum newbie, so don't worry about asking questions. This was my first time dining in at this place and I am impressed with the food, but not with the cleanliness. The teacup was dirty and I found a hair in one of my mochi rices. The staff was nice enough to give me a brand new one though. The turnip cake here is great in flavor but too soggy for me I recommend asking them to make it extra crispy. The Xiao Long Bao was my favorite thing here that's for sure. They did a great job because there was soup in each dumpling. Flavor wise I love that they have ginger within the soup dumpling absolutely delicious. My parents come here often since it's one of the more affordable options for dim sum. read more

Went here for Chinese New Year on a friend's recommendation and was not disappointed. We got lucky in that several tables opened up right when we got there, so we had a short wait. One of the missions for our short weekend getaway to Oahu was to eat Chinese food as there's a severe lack of it on Maui. Thanks to my Yelp friend Fran C. and a few others, Ginger & Garlic was suggested. ATMOSPHERE: The interior is plain as can be with unadorned whiteness everywhere. Big windows let in lots of light. Seating capacity is quite intimate compared to other Chinese restaurants nearby. The place was pretty deserted when we arrived around 11am but quickly filled up soon after. MENU: Dim sum along with an extensive regular menu. DIM SUM: Just a sole cart went around so my impatience was starting to activate. Pork Shumai Standard version with yellow wrappers. Moist and tasty but I had to add shoyu for an added kick. Charsiu Manapua These were flatter than normal and cut open on the top. Spot-on taste but too bread-y for me. Chicken & Beef Ball Insanely moist and tender, they sat on an aburrage-like wrapper. Good but not my favorite selection. Pork Soup Dumplings By the time I ate these the liquid had dried up and were all around chewy. Scallop Look Funn Tiny scallops inhabited the insides of the wide, sliced noodle. Unfortunately I had to add shoyu for flavor regardless of the included subtle sauce. Chicken Feet My all-time favorite! Many have sneered and made faces but I don't care because they're missing out! My three amigos all tried them and at least liked it! Good flavor and tender. Custard Tart My favorite Chinese desert was pretty good here, though I like the version at Legend better due to its more buttery crust. REGULAR MENU FOOD: Egg Foo Young Huge portion salted just right and filled with white & green onions and bean sprouts. Very good. Kau Yuk Oddly their version is made with taro that acts also as a binder according to our server. It looked like sliced purple roast beef, though I didn't have any as it's not my favorite dish. We were so stuffed we took it to go. SERVICE: We were greeted and seated immediately. The dim sum cart came around in the snap of a finger though became painfully slow after that. Wait staff were friendly and patient. OVERALL: I really wanted to try a noodle dish but was too stuffed. Very affordable. Total bill for four of us was about $60. We were nervous about eating out because of Covid but we were pleasantly surprised. The bathroom was extremely clean, they wiped down the tables before we sat and the restaurant generally had a clean look to it (eg white walls). There were only 3 tables eating in the restaurant even though it was a Sunday at 11am (on Christmas week). They also had booster seats and high chairs neatly stacked in a corner if you have kids like us. The shrimp steamed dumplings were as delicious as we remembered them. We actually got approximately 5 orders of them because they were such a favorite. We were impressed that they were able to offer so many options given that there were so many people eating in, but there were a ton of take out orders so I guess that's how. Our only regret was that we didn't order the green onion fried pancakes soon enough. Another table got the last order and it would be 2 hours until another batch was ready. I'm also biased because I had been wanting to try it for a long time, and so was disappointingly underwhelmed. Dim sum restaurants are not known for their ambiance but you need to lower your expectations even further here - you're sitting between piles of cardboard boxes for their thriving take-out business. Like I said, the food was maybe a B, and the main menu dishes passing by looked great, so I will return and order their beef chow funn for take-away, but probably won't rush back for seated dim sum. When we complained, the manager came over and she took the hair off the plate and walked away. She didn't even take the plate away, just took the hair off the plate. This restaurant was recommended by a worker from a nearby lei stand. I was craving crispy gau gee min so went ahead and ordered that to go. They also sell dim sum and it was very tempting as I saw some of the customers eating but I did not order any. I was disappointed when I returned to work to eat my lunch. The noodles were over fried as well as the gau gee. The gau gee was so burned that you couldn't eat it. Overall, we really like the food here, but the customer service is inconsistent! We've had times where the customer service was great, we've had some times where it was okay, and we've also had one time where it was just horrible. Great service as in all staff were absolutely friendly and made sure we were well taken care of. Horrible service as in almost completely unattended, we had to ask for simple things like water and utensils as well as flag someone down to take our order when the restaurant wasn't even busy. I'm still giving 4 stars because the food is good, and we feel like all the good experiences do outweigh the few bad experiences. Our most recent visit, we did a takeout order and we called ahead. I love dim sum and wish that I could have DS more often, I remember growing up, I was super happy every time my parents gave me the news that we are going to dim sum. This is how my family feels when its time for dim sum. This visit to Ginger & Garlic was last minute plans, for my daughter's last day of college break on the islands before she heads back and she wanted to eat dim sum. I haven't found a dim sum place that I really like yet. This place came to my mind as it was one of my bookmarks after reviews & photos. We scored a street parking close to the restaurant, It was during a week day at about 11 am, we got a table right away, It got busy 30 mins later. The restaurant set up is the same as previous restaurant,Good Fortune, but the only thing that is different is new menu, new cook, everything else is new per the cashier/owner, I spoke to, when I paid for my bill. I really could taste the difference and I/my family really enjoyed the dim sum and our entrees. SERVICE: The service could have been better, there were 2 waitress working and it took awhile to get our requested items. There was a miscommunication with one of the waitress, seem like she didn't understood me ex. when I asked for a take out box she thought I meant another order of noodles. FOOD: Dim sum baskets are 2.95 for small, 3.45 for medium, 4.95 for large. I ordered the kids & hubby's favorites which are char siu bao, siu mai, pork bean curd, shrimp dumplings, fried shrimp, chicken feet, custard bun. I really enjoyed the dim sum and I know my family did too. No complaints from them. I ordered the pork and thousand year egg congee ( jook) This is the best jook I had, it was so tasty. We didn't have reservations, but we were "early", so our party of ten easily got a table at 11am. Because the restaurant is on the corner of Smith and Pauahi Streets, the natural sunlight that streams in through the picture windows brightens up the large room and makes it look clean and more spacious! We ordered a feast: Pan fried Gyoza Steamed shrimp dumplings Fried taro puffs Siu mai Shiitake mushroom bao (vegetarian) Spinach with scallop Chive with shrimp Jook with Century egg Jin dui filled with char siu - one of my favorites! I brought my parents here today for New Year's lunch and they were packed. My parents love going to Fook Lam at the Chinese Cultural Center, so I brought them here for a change. My parents thought the food was ok. There were some good dishes and some not so good, as with any restaurant. You just need to know what to order. We were still eating when one of the workers took the bill from our table and said that she was going to cash us out. We weren't going to order any more food, but there was still food on the table and we were eating. She apologized and said that she needed the table. My dad ended up stuffing the rest of the food in his face. He took a paper napkin, wrapped the ham sui gok in it, and ate it on the way out. I was horrified. We were thinking about closing out the year with a nice dim sum lunch and were fortunately invited to be part of a group by fellow Yelp Elite Nadine C. Ginger & Garlic replaced one of our fave Chinese restaurants, Good Fortune, and this was going to be our first dine here. The good thing about eating dim sum in a large group is the variety that one can order and taste.. So, we understood that there is new management and the chef is formerly from another of our fave Chinese restaurants, Fook Lam. That information alone created more excitement as well knowing that we'd be dining with good friends. Being that it was a Saturday morning, this Chinese restaurant was packed with other diners and fortunately, there was enough wait staff to be attentive although there were times where service lagged. The servers wheeled their steamer carts filled with all sorts of familiar and some not so familiar dim sum items to choose from. On each of the tables, there were printed menus underneath the plexiglas tabletop to make your selections from, too. We ordered a full variety of steamed, deep fried, pan-fried and baked items which were either savory or sweet. The noodles we ordered was called "Braised E-Mein" and the server recommended 2 full orders. I think it was over ordered as the platter was brimming with noodles, which IMHO, seemed a bit overcooked. However, it was okay in comparison to the more flavorful dim sum. Just as when this place was the former Good Fortune, I preferred the dim sum over the noodles. But, maybe it could have been that I was just too full to really enjoy the noodles. We'd return to try other dishes perhaps during dinner time. read more

We drank an incredible amount of hot tea, & the staff was nice enough to keep refilling our tea pot (like a million times). As good as the food was (you will have to look at my pics), I was there mainly for the good company from my Yelp buddies! It's great to hang out with just a cool group of Yeeps that are fun to hang out with! Service - Although they were real busy today, not once did I feel like we were rushed so that they may turn the table. I swear we were there for at least 3 hours or so chowing down, and talkin' story! GREAT VALUE! What are the chances of being invited to have dim sum 4x in a week? My sister reached out to me 3x earlier this week but today's outing started several weeks ago when ultra elite Auntie Nadine reached out asking several of us to save the date to try Ginger and Garlic (GG). Because I am in Chinatown almost daily and my semi-OCD behavior, I tend to notice small changes and realized the business name change from previously occupied Good Fortune to GG. It was still very early in the morning and noticed the grand opening flowers near the entrance. When I arrived shortly after 11am most of my friends were sitting down and just started eating. I noticed the bright atmosphere which made it welcoming. The good thing about dim sum dining with a group of close friends is that you get to sample an array of savory and sweet offerings. I'm glad to report two thumbs up from me. Overall I enjoyed most of the items sampled (see attached photos), including e-mein noodles. Flavors weren't overpowering and quite tasty. We had steamed, deep fried, pan fried and baked. The chicken feet were plump and tasty, and to our delight the steamed mochi rice in lotus leaf wrap had salted duck egg inside. ***happy dance*** Service was slightly above average for a Chinese restaurant. The waitstaff periodically came to check on us and despite being full with quite a bit of leftovers on the table that didn't stop the staff from checking up on our table with fresh dim sum straight from the kitchen. In closing I had a great dim sum experience where I walked out satisfied and pleased with the dim sum quality. When it was time to pay the bill the damages didn't break the piggy bank. Went on a not so busy Saturday afternoon. Service was was decent.. like your typical Hawaii Chinese dim sum restaurant. The waitress was nice but you will most likely have to flag them down if you needed anything. The baked items were warm and the steamed items were hot. They will push a dim sum cart to you and you can find most of the popular items there. If you don't find what you like, you can put your order in with the waitress and they will freshly steam them for you. Prices are pretty reasonable here compared to other dim sum places. I would rate the food 4/5. Everything was good but some of the items just needed a little bit more flavor. We only had dim sum this time around but will definitely come back to try some of their rice and noodle dishes. read more

Ordered various dim sum, a look fun noodle dish and hot sour soup. The dim sum was like any other dim sum that you can get at places like Dim Sum House for less money. The look fun was far from fun. It was like fat noodles boiled in shoyu. The best part of this meal was the hot sour soup. I spent about $60 for two with tip. Service was typical for a dim sum type restaurant. But love how tender the chicken's flesh and the combination of the cashew's taste is good to chew at first. Love the texture though. How I wish they put plenty of snow peas & sliced of carrots for this. The taste is just fair and nothing really special. Steam Rice (1.50+tax per bowl)is cooked perfectly and really smells good. Wonder what brand of rice they're using. LoL. ~ CUSTOMER SERVICE. We were addressed & seated promptly. Ordered some takeout dimsum. We tried the char siu steamed buns. They were good, tasty filling, one of the better ones I've had. Also tried the fried mochi puffs with char siu. Never heard of fried mochi puffs, but they're like jin dui without the outer sesame seeds. Highly recommend you try this! For dessert we tried the steamed custard buns. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the custard to bun ratio on these is awesome. Very nice portion of custard. I also ordered the snow top taro buns, as others liked it. Super sad to say this but I did not like them. I can definitely see why others would enjoy them as they don't taste bad. I just personally found them too dry (but for the record manju is too dry for me, so take that for whatever it's worth). Looking forward to going back to try their minute chicken with cake noodles, and stuffed look fun! Probably will grab more fried mochi puffs lol A note on the neighborhood, and this is mostly an issue in the evening. If you're intending to grab takeout I recommend at least 2 people go, if possible. My daughter lives in town so she knows the area well. She recommended this place. It's just across from her place at the corner. We went. Man, the servers were pushing stuff at us. It was super quick too. They had the roller come by and out came the dishes unlike Jade you write down what you want and wait one by one. Here is the old systems. But they did not have most what I wanted. It wasn't what I thought it would be. The food was not tasty. It tasted old and some was cold. I will stick to Jade. read more

Absolutely love this place and have actually become somewhat of a regular here. My family and I come around 11am for a dim sum brunch at least once, almost every weekend. We order Har Gow, Shiu Mai, shrimp half moons, and shrimp luk fun to fill us up and get us going. My son, who's a rather finicky eater, loves the baked char siu baos here. I also really like the chicken feet, char siu pastry, and spinach and shrimp dumplings. Service is prompt and the servers take good care of us (especially since they've come to know us over the past year or two). Place can get very busy but for the most part we have never had to wait more than 15 minutes. I will say sometimes when it is very busy it does feel like you're being rushed so they can seat the next group of people. I understand they need to turn tables to make money so it's not an offense that warrants the loss of a star in my opinion. Overall, the food is great and the service is on point. I ordered through Uber Eats and had it delivered to me for lunch. I have to say, I was disappointed. I paid $19.45 for salt & pepper shrimp in a small to go box, and it didn't come with rice. The Uber App didn't say it came with rice, but I guess my fault for assuming it did. However, the salt & pepper shrimp was tasty. I also ordered the Singapore Style Rice Noodle, although this was a big portion and I was able to share with coworkers, it was bland, didn't have any taste. I had to ask if it was just me. The search for dim sum on Oahu continues, I wonder if I could eventually mark off every restaurant that serves dim sum lol. Had ginger & garlic last weekend for dim sum, It was an early morning. We were already out and figured we could stop by and try It. My favorite time for dimsum is when the restaurant just opens, it's a lot calmer. You don't feel as rushed when choosing items, and I can get in and out in like 30mins lol. I have to say, out of the 3 dim sum spots I've tried so far, Ginger and garlic is one of the better ones. It is in Chinatown, but there's a municipal lot right across the street. Makes It super easy. We got seated and were served tea right away. They only had one cart out at that point but you also order from the menu. Menu is written to be easily understood. If you've never had dim sum before or maybe you don't know the English names. Do some research. They don't have any picture menus but there's basically a list of the offerings. Honestly I like that style of ordering. It's easier for me to just pick what I want right away instead of going cart by cart. Asking them what they have. There was only 1 older guy here who could actually speak English enough for me to understand him. We did all our ordering through him, he was very nice. The restaurant itself is not the most updated. Again It is in Chinatown, they always say the "hole in wall" "rundown" looking places have some of the best food lol. They have all your signature dim sum, siu Mai, har gow, chicken feet, ect. My husband said he had some of the biggest chicken feet here lol. They were pretty big and "meaty" so to speak. Dim sum was fresh, and still steaming hot when served. I think everything we had was pretty good. We spent about $35 for two, and I think that's average. We do tend to order at least 6 things every time we go out for dimsum.
