Came here for the first time. They had carts rolling around with dim sum. We got a variety of dim sum. My favorites are the seafood bean curd roll and pork bean curd roll. They brought out the Dan tat or egg custard hot as well as the coconut gin doi or Mochi ball. Everything had good flavor and it was nice eating the desserts so fresh and warm. Their service is better than some other dim sum places I have been to in the local area. Prices are reasonable as well. For 3 of us, it cost about $100 with each dim sum order being $5-10 with most being $5-6. read more

Black fungus with vegetables - which is just choy sum btw, was $20.75. The fried shrimp dumplings were $7.75. Sooooo tiny, could easily fit 2 in your mouth at the same time. The Chinese chicken salad was $19.45 and had about 5-6 small pieces of chicken... we also ordered shu mai, baked and steamed bau and custard tart. They charged $8.80 for "service fee" with only .10 cents going to Uber listed as depending on size of order for take out containers, storage, materials... total cost was $71.20 with a one time coupon for $15 off plus $9 tip. Dim sum was decent at this place for being on the island. The pricing was fair for what you get. The chin fun for 9.99 was expensive but the sui mai for 4.95 was good. Hit and miss. We've been here several times but not for awhile, especially after our son had a serious anaphylactic reaction to their char siu bao that initially we were told did not have any peanuts but later after questioning the chef directly learned that yes, he adds peanut butter to the meat. We've since let time heal any hard feelings and decided to go back for lunch (since we got a parking space right in front of the restaurant to do errands). Their cong you bing (green onion pancakes) are literally the best on the island - flavorful, perfect texture, good size for price. If you grew up eating homemade cong you bing by your grandmother, this will take you right back to your wonder years. I always like to sample and compare shao long bao at different restaurants. I didn't know they made these here. Each serving comes with 3, but the price is reasonable compared to other places that serve 5 or 6 and charge $12-$15. The soup inside the baos are flavorful and a good amount. At least one other place's is dry inside! So be mindful to ask for a soup spoon here (not automatically given). also ask for red vinegar (special red vinegar sauce also didn't come with order). Pork was good, skin average. Overall, not bad. Last but not least, I also like to compare wonton noodle soup. Theirs did not disappoint - good sized serving for typical price (maybe $1 more? but not the most expensive), fresh Chinese broccoli, plenty of shrimp & pork wontons, egg noodles. A terrific comfort food that satisfied! Bowl was a bit basic, but that only matters for pictures (so I didn't take one of me draining the bowl in my mouth like I often do on Instagram). Restaurant surprisingly wasn't busy at 1 PM; our takeout order took about 30 minutes. All the dishes we ordered were good. I tried the Shiitake Mushroom Bun w/ Pork on a whim. It's visually intriguing as it really looks like a big mushroom top. Like every good manapua/bao should be, it's soft & fluffy, moist but not soggy, and the bun-to-filling ratio is perfect. Speaking of the filling - I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously, it would/should have a shiitake mushroom flavor, but it's not overpowering. Don't get me wrong, it's not subtle at all, but you also don't get tired of eating it. Every dish I ordered was just meh. Not only is parking a hassle but their Honey walnut prawns are pretty bad. They're soft a mushy, not crispy at all. Their Chinese broccoli is also pretty bad as I don't think there's any oyster sauce on it. Tried this place for dim sum for the first time on a Friday around 11 am. There was no line so we had the pick of the place to sit for our party of four. They have a cart and we ordered immediately a plethora of plates, Chiu Chao fun guo, fried shrimp dumplings, steamed pork ribs; sticky rice in lotus leaf, har gow, snow mountain taro buns, snow mountain char siu buns; scallop dumpling, fried mochi puff, steamed chicken feet. Everything came out piping hot and the tastes were spot on. One of the better old school dim sum places in Honolulu with good and fast services. Prices are not bad too. During lunch, you can order dim sum or family-style dishes. I ordered the Dungeness Crab in Salted Egg Yolk Sauce and Stir-fry Pea Shoots with Garlic. Dungeness crab in salted egg yolk sauce: This crab is about two pounds and deep fried with the salted egg yolk sauce and chopped garlic on top. This dish exceeded my expectations. So savory and flavorful. The crab was meaty and fresh. Definitely reminds me of the dishes I tried in Singapore. Stir-fry pea shoots: Needed some greens with the crab so I usually order pea shoots. We ordered the fried shrimp dumpling, shrimp dumpling, shrimp and chives dumpling, pork dumpling, soup dumpling, and the deliciously sweet butter bun. I loved every single one that came out except the shrimp with chives not because it wasn't good, I just didn't care too much for the added chives into the mix but if you love chives, be my guest! Our absolutely favorite was the pork dumpling - just as other Yelpers said - it does not disappoint. SERVICE: Well, we came on a super busy day where they just wanted us to get out of there as soon as we were done eating. Make sure you know what you're ordering when the server comes to you. They had the little trolly out with dim sum but we didn't want anything that was in there. They also give complementary tea before your meal arrives - they give you the tea in an old OLD oLd tea pot lol It gives the place character! It has been a while since I've been to Ginger and Garlic! Oh, how I've missed it! We ordered takeout on this occasion. The menu is still exactly the same as it was over two years ago. A very extensive menu with a wider variety of dishes that you don't see at other Chinese restaurants. The prices went up $1-3, but it's still on par and even better compared to the rest. Staff is mostly the same as before, which is good. It was pretty busy when I arrived in the afternoon. Many tables were taken, and surprisingly, all of them weren't Chinese! Ginger and Garlic also participates with Bite Squad, and boy, they get a lot of orders. Many takeout as well. Glad to see the big support. We just ordered one dim sum: Shrimp Look Funn. The shrimp pieces were decent sized. The look funn was slightly on the thick side, but still acceptable. The sauce was tasty. The Quails in XO Sauce was delicious! You get three whole quail, chopped in half. The XO sauce just coated the quail, and stir fried with basil, jalapeño, red chili pepper, and ginger. I'm a huge fan of XO sauce. I love the dried shrimp, dried scallops, garlic, chili, and all the good stuff. The quail was prepared well. The meat was tender and moist, and came off the tiny bones easily. Give it a try! The Stir Fried Chinese Yam, Cucumbers, and Chinese Wood Ear fungus is a dish that my wife got me and our family into because Chinese yam is one of her favorite foods. My family and I usually uses the dried version for soups. This dish was packed with wood ear fungus. They were rehydrated well, and soaked in the flavors and garlic very well. The Chinese yam was soft on the outside with a crunchy inside. The cucumber was good, but I noticed a couple of pieces had those brown holes where the bugs have burrowed in. Wish they had more care when cutting the cucumber. The Yangchow Fried Rice was VERY generous. The rice was packed into the box and formed a perfect square from the lid. Though, the quantity reduced the quality because the wok heat was slightly lacking as well as the taste, but still acceptable. It wasn't oily too. There were a lot of shrimp hidden underneath. Overall, the food was acceptable and enjoyable. The food did cool down a lot from the 15 minute drive home and out of the package. Adding some personal touches made them a lot better. Luckily, we found out that ginger and garlic was open. Located on the corner of Smith Street, I was lucky to find an empty metered parking on the next street. Although there are homeless hanging around chinatown, ginger and garlic is still clean inside and right outside as well As I waited for my take out food, I noticed people were dining in. This is my new fav dim sum place!!! Walked in around 230pm and it wasnt crowded at all! There was maybe two parties left inside, and towards the end we were the only ones in there. We got greeted and seated immediately. The worker came up to us right away with the tray of choices, but we didn't choose anything from it. We ordered from the menu and everything came out hot and fresh. The shrimp & chives was one of the best I've ever had! It was packed and plump full of flavor, the xiao long bao came with a red wine vinegar sauce you could pour over it, and that was super super good the soup in it was nice and flavorful. We got a bunch of things and everything was so delicious and flavorful. The worker was really nice surprisingly, sometimes I get nervous that they'll be a little harsh but we felt welcomed and enjoyed our meal. One of my favorite dimsum places in Chinatown. They're very consistent with preparation and taste of their dimsum. I admit trying to find parking is horrible no matter where you go in Chinatown. Even to find a place to park really fast to pick up take out! But luckily I was able to pull up across the street for a few minutes to get my stuff. First things first, if you don't know what to get I highly recommend their crispy seaweed roll, deep fried shrimp, shrimp dumplings, Sui mai, egg custard bun or tart, seafood bundle, mushroom bun, and their seafood chive dumplings. Basically, any of their dumplings are good, except for their half moon, that one is alright. Even on their busy days, they usually say that the take out orders will take about 15-20 minutes, but i found that it usually takes them at least 25-30, especially if you ordered a lot of dimsum. It's not good to take too long to pick it up because dim sum is only good when it's fresh! If you let it sit, then it's just a waste. And they always pack it fresh. Remember to ask for extra mustard and/or soy sauce because sometimes they forget to give you or they only give you one small container and if you're saucy like me then it's obviously not enough. read more

We were looking for a dim sum restaurant as our usual spot was closed. We kept looking around and found this restaurant on Yelp. It is located in Chinatown Honolulu on the corner of Smith Street and Pauahi Street. The restaurant is pretty clean and is situated with round tables in the restaurant. We went in about an hour before closing and it was not busy at all. There was only one other patron and 2 others that came in for take out orders. We were greeted by two nice ladies. One seated us and took our order. The other lady dropped off our orders off to our tables when they were ready. We were so hungry and ordered quite a bit of food but we did well considering there were 6 of us. We ordered: 1) Crispy Seaweed Roll - (Delish and filled with shrimp and imitation crab, rolled with Seaweed, a light batter, and fried - MUST TRY) 2) Char Sui Bao - (Manapua - steamed and filling was tasty) 3) Shrimp & Snow Peas - (Great Flavor) 4) Shrimp Dumpling - (Shimp size was big and sooo yummy - one of my favs - MUST TRY) 5) Salt & Pepper Pork Chops - (Crispy & fried well but the flavor was not as strong as others I have tasted) 6) Pork Siu Mai - (Pork Hash and had a good flavor) 7) Crispy Gau Gee over Cake Noodle - (the Gau Gee had a good mixture of filling and the noodles were tasty with the sauce) 8) Minute Chicken Cake Noodle - (Chicken was seasoned well and I like that it was cooked well with crispiness to it. This place is mediocre at best. Nothing was a wow experience from dishes to service. The interior is dated and clean to the standard of a restaurant in Chinatown. Most items lacked proper seasoning. They were edible, but nothing really made me go, mmm. Definitely, no eyes rolling back foodgasms to be had here. We had: pork dumplings were ok, shrimp dumplings were ok, shrimp with spinach dumplings were bad (tasted like the spinach were spoiled and they used them anyway), shrimp cheong funn was ok, sticky rice with meat filling wrapped in lotus leaf was a little better than ok. I get the usual dishes which include siu mai, garlic ung choi, shrimp and chive, bean curd roll, black bean spareribs, and gin dui. For the most part all the food was tasty. The garlic chives dumplings were good as the taro in the black bean spareribs was delicious. The garlic ung choi could have had some more flavor or salt but it's crunch is delicious. The only complaint I would have is the gin dui was slathered with oil. I know it's not freshly made but wow so much oil it wasn't appetizing to eat it. The taste was there, just the oil was so much! It was empty when we went so it was nice. The ambiance inside could be a tad bit better, but to be honest I'm there for the food not so much the ambiance. If the dim sum you want can be simply placed in the steamer, you can order it at any time of day here, which is unique in Honolulu. We haven't been disappointed by many of the dishes (yet), but I'll limit my review to the the few items that our baby would likely eat on this day: - Mochi Rice in Lotus Leaf ($4.95): seemingly small, but decent taste. - Siu Mai ($3.65): four seemingly small pieces per order but more authentic and less starchy than some other places. - Shrimp Dumpling ($3.86): three reasonably sized and decent tasting delights our baby can't get enough of (wrapping or shrimp)! === 3. SERVICE & ATMOSPHERE Management turns over here a little more frequently than other places and it's better now than before. English and Cantonese works well and is much more professional now. Food is served reasonably quick. The decor has changed a little for the better, but you're still getting the clinical flouroescent tan should you choose to dine in. Speaking of dining in, small (4 or less) and larger groups fit well with the many table combinations available. Wheelchairs and strollers can easily get in but are still a challenge to have in a tightly-packed seating are.
