Caitlin, my girl. WOW. First impression of Gino's Restaurant & Bar, my family and I walk into a nice calm chill environment of a restaurant, take our seats and start looking at the menu. I really appreciated the dessert and varied menu items displayed real big on the wall right next to our table. I noticed almost immediately the affordable 2 scoop gelato for $8 dollars and genuinely could not resist. Dark chocolate, salted caramel, and vanilla bourbon apple crisp. I had such a hard time figuring what I wanted and that's when my girl, none other then Caitlin herself, comes up to the table, flashed us a beautiful smile and introduces herself, lets us know she will be taking care of us for the rest of the night and immediately took charge when my father had questions about the beer he had tried at his previous visit. Caitlin made sure to find the exact one after the description "it's dark, but it's light" was given by my beloved father, Caitlin had gotten the exact one on the first try, even letting my dad try a new flavor he showed interest in. After Caitlin brought out the wine and beer in a nice timely delivery, is when I really got to ask her all the questions I needed to decide what I was going to order for dinner, I asked her "what's your favorite" and she laughed and explained that it was almost impossible to pick for just one favorite, naturally exhibiting to me that there wasn't just one fabulous item on the menu which calmed me knowing Caitlin won't be steering me in the wrong direction. She ended up helping me to shave down my options and I went ahead with the Jumbo Cheese Ravioli, added chicken and swapped marinara for Alfredo sauce. My family went ahead and ordered theirs, one rigatoni with sausage and mushroom, a chicken piccata, and the sampler #2. The wait time was a little more extended but that was to be expected with the traffic of the establishment, as we sat, watching all the new customers walk in, we talked and enjoyed conversation, even sharing one with Caitlin, which made the time all flow by smoothly. When the food arrived I think I drooled a little on the table. All four dishes arrive together in one trip. I made sure to capture the beauty of my plate (see photo below). I thoroughly enjoyed my raviolis, perfect ricotta filling, creamy sauce, and the best grilled chicken I've had in a while. I sipped on my water and lime and enjoyed eating dinner at the table with my family. Once we devoured our food which appeared to have only been a nibble (referring to the proportion sizing of each dish) we boxed up our dishes eager to revisit our meals later that night and waited to order our dessert. Caitlin came up to take our order, we settled on the Mississippi Mud Pie with dark chocolate gelato for $13 dollars. As we waited more and more customers were entering the premise. I think my eye balls dilated and grew double in size when our dessert arrived to the table (see photo below). It came perfectly with 4 amazing desert spoons (iykyk) and we made that pie disappear in 3 minutes flat. No joke. It was so rich and creamy and chocolatey, perfect for any woman hanging with her friend for the week (Iykyk)!! Overall I'd say my first visit was an absolute 20/10, my expectations exceeded, I left happier than I was walking in, belly nice and full of food and happy memories in my mind. I will be back, I would love to try the pan seared salmon next and of course salted caramel gelato, and perhaps even the tiramisu. The cannoli and marinara are straight-up excellent: flawless ricotta, perfect shells, and a sauce so good it deserves to be at a different restaurant entirely. Everything else was an insult to Italian grandmothers everywhere. Calamari: pale and greasy. Eggplant parm: a soggy, leathery brick suffocating under congealed, plastic-tasting cheese. Pesto pasta: radioactive green sludge floating in a kiddie pool of rancid oil. I've had better Italian food from a gas station hot case. Service was eye-rolling slow. I preface this to say that I tend to measure Italian restaurants by Olive Garden by which I mean price and taste ratio since I feel like OG is a solid mid-tier restaurant. There has been restaurants where the food was worse and sometimes the price higher. That is all to say that I feel Gino's is about on par with Olive Garden. About similar quality, about similar price, maybe a bit better. I will say that the garlic bread is absolutely delicious and that itself deserves its own commendation. Very very yummy. I got the lasagna which was $17 and huge. This pasta comfortably fed me for 3 meals. The only unexpected thing was that in addition to the ground beef inside, they also had either sausage or meatball halves (hard to tell) layered quite generously in it too. So all the good stuff: place had pretty good vibe, service was great, food came out fast, wasn't crowded, food was hot, portion/cost ratio was good..... For the culinary side.... Presentation seemed a bit lacking, the bread tasted frozen, the pasta had to come from a box, the marinara sauce tasted like it came from a can and was based on tomato paste. Now it did seem they made or modded the salad dressing, had a bit of zing to it so I appreciated that, and I don't even like salads. Sausage had an interesting flavor, and an interesting take, but if they thicken that sauce up and did a little different presentation it could be something. We haven't been here in a while and decided to give it a shot. I had the Chicken Parm and my wife had the Eggplant Parm. The bread with garlic butter in the bottom was fantastic. The Chicken Parm was fantastic but they used to make the Eggplant Parm like the chicken parm (crispy) but it seems they changed it. The dish was just all mushy, it needs the crispiness it used to have. Service was great and restaurant was just like we remembered old school Italian. read more

I hate leaving negative reviews for small businesses, but I honestly can't give Gino's more than one star after our visit. We really wanted to like this place, but everything we ordered was disappointing. The garlic bread came out as two small unsliced loaves sitting in a bowl half-filled with butter and garlic -- almost like bread floating in garlic soup. Even the salad was strange. In the middle was a single lone slice of pepperoni -- something I've never experienced in my entire life dining at Italian restaurants. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be there on purpose (and, if so, why there was only one) or if it just fell in by accident. The chicken Parmesan was especially bad -- the chicken wasn't thin or crispy like a proper cutlet should be, and the sauce tasted straight from a cheap jar. The lasagna was oddly built with slices of sausage, which gave it an unusual and unappealing flavor. The atmosphere felt off too -- strange décor and a location that didn't feel warm or inviting. Overall, it was such a strange dining experience that I'd honestly choose Olive Garden over coming back here -- and I'm someone who doesn't even like Olive Garden. I feel bad leaving such a low rating for a local spot, but I can't in good conscience recommend anyone spend their money here. read more

I hate to write this review, but my friend and I had a terrible experience over the weekend. Let me explain, the food was on point as usual. However, the racist rant was unexpected. Not that it's not to be expected considering the current political environment. The disappointment was no one who worked at the establishment said anything. So after 10-15 minutes of the outburst, I'd had enough and started leave my seat to engage. There was on gentleman who yelled at the racist patron to shut up. However, As I got up to address the issue, a gentleman approached me and ask I not engage. We didn't allow this experience to ruin our lives. I don't know what's happened here, this place use to be good. It has a very cool old bar & I still LOVE the wine list. I would actually return to the bar & have drinks but I wouldn't order any food after this last visit. The flatbread pizza was not too terrible, it was just a piece of cracker bread with WAY WAY too much cheese, but the Italian fennel sausage on it was very good. Maybe if they didn't put two pounds of cheese on it, it would have been ok :( The Cesar salad was ok, mine was decent, it wasn't too over dressed, however, hubby's was drenched in so much dressing it was in a wilted pool of dressing b4 the entrees came. The Veal entree's were so bad we just got up & left. Over cooked, over sauced, mine the veal Marsala was completely bland, no salt, sauce out of a bag horrific. Hubby's was over cooked, rubber, over sauced, over cheesed, pasta all broken too soft. My pasta was drenched in fake butter/oil horrific. The complimentary bread we got was stale and sitting in another pool of the fake garlic butter/oil. Very disappointing. I hope the food goes Back to being good bc I like this cool old bar. The feeling that was brought to me once I walked in whisked me back to my time spent living in Staten Island, New York from childhood to adult-hood. This hole in the wall eatery had immersed me back into a familiar warmth, tugging the sense of nostalgia that buries deep inside my senses and the feeling was even further strengthened as soon as my boyfriend and I were softly welcomed by the server who told us to sit anywhere we liked. A casual yet familiar invitation that reminded me of the homeyness I once felt. A simplicity yet cozy intimacy trivialized yet, a balance that resonated highly with us was the clear oscillation of this place. My boyfriend, a savant for great taste and portions especially from hole-in-the-walls found it to be an underrated gem. The space itself told stories of long lived family gatherings--a reminder of nostalgic times I once had with friends and family at a time. The broken in wooden tables and the vintage Italian family decor transported me to the sounds and ambiance of countless diners who have also enjoyed the place as much as I did. The service was a combination of attentiveness and comfort. From the immediate greeting from our waitress to her patience with us while we overlooked the menu was delightful. Then came the food, a hot tray of a half portion margarita pizza created a jump in sensory awareness that signaled it's freshness only anticipating us even more to try our meal. I never leave reviews but I don't think I could live with myself if I didn't leave one. I first ate here around a year ago and it was a quick lunch and we tried some of their pizza. My girlfriend and I just got a cheese pizza and it was less than spectacular. It seemed undercooked and very wet and greasy. After that we kind of avoid this place, even though we live less than a mile away from it. Today I decided to give it a second chance because I can understand pizza being something that people expect and being difficult to pull off, especially if you don't have the right ovens or access to fresh dough. They brought out a "baguette" for us, both which was drowned in butter, garlic, and Parmesan. There was legit a pool of butter on the bottom of the tray, and it was impossible to eat without getting both of our hands is completely covered in grease. That was unfortunately the highlight of the meal. For an appetizer, I asked for the bruschetta which was topped with a tomato and pepper sauce and shaved Parmesan. The tomato sauce was cold, but it wasn't horrible, and there were large pieces of sliced yellow onion inside of it, which wasn't all that bad but it definitely felt like something that you get from a high school culinary class in freshman year. We both ordered pasta and it's surprising that this restaurant is still open. I ordered shrimp scampi, and when I say that it was in a pool of butter, I'm not joking legitimately it didn't feel like there's any sauce in it at all they just poured butter with very rough chopped red onions in with microwaved, frozen shrimp and barilla linguine. My girlfriend got the spinach fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken, and there were obvious exposed parts of the pasta un-sauced , which should never happen in an Italian restaurant. That just tells me that they're just throwing pasta on a plate, pouring sauce, and putting chicken on top. There should at least be some time in the pan to toss the pasta to make sure everything's coated and make sure that the chicken is at least warmed up. The service was actually very good albeit a bit strained because they seemed a bit understaffed, but they were personable. The food took a little while for it to come out, which makes the situation a little bit more confusing. They had enough time to give the proper attention to the food to make it at least a little bit better. The ambience isn't bad but there's a lot to be desired and the bathroom seem like the doors are half broken like there's been a bar brawl in there. If there is one redeeming quality to this place that they have a decent selection of beer and wines that you can drink to take the edge off the horrible food you're about to eat. Unless you're willing to get completely plastered to the point where you don't recognize that the food is that bad don't come here. read more

I tried very hard to like Gino's Restaurant and Bar. My first visit was hardly memorable, but the service was excellent, so when the opportunity presented itself, we decided to give it another shot. Unfortunately, it didn't get any better on our second visit. To start with, even though the proportions were abundant, my Caesar Salad had slimy lettuce. I did appreciate the large flakes of Parmesan Cheese, but opted to push the salad aside as I questioned the freshness of the ingredients. We did order an appetizer of Bruschetta to start our dinner. Maybe it's just Gino's spin on bruschetta, but it was not at all what we expected. The tomato base seemed like it was dropped from a can that they picked up at Publix, then heavily dosed with onions, leaving the bread overly soggy. We pushed it aside too and were grateful for the complimentary Garlic Bread that our server delivered to the table. Even though it was was undercooked and drown in butter, it was miles better than the bruschetta we paid for. On our previous visit, I didn't care for the sauce of the lasagna, so this time around, I ordered the Shrimp Scampi. Let me say this...if this had been my first time ever eating Shrimp Scampi, then I would most likely never order it again from another restaurant. The Shrimp were over-cooked and mushy. The sauce was void of any spice or flavor. The noodles were bathed in hot buttered water. I did bring it to the attention of our server, which she ultimately deducted from our bill, but what was most concerning was that she told me that there had been several complaints about the shrimp earlier in the day. I seriously question why a restaurant would knowingly serve bad/suspect seafood to a customer. At that point, my appetite was ruined. I'm pretty sure that we won't be returning anytime soon, which is unfortunate, because there are not enough family style Italian restaurants in the Carrollwood area. The food here is amazing. Go hungry because the portion sizes are enormous. Today I had rigatoni with sausage. It does come with mushrooms on the menu, but I don't like mushrooms as many of you know. It is just to die for. The sage cream sauce is so creamy and Rich it comes steaming hot and is just wonderful with Parmesan cheese. Today Javie had spaghetti and meatballs. The tomato sauce is just to die for. It never disappoints it's always fresh and he loves getting anything with tomato sauce on it from here. You always bring fresh bread to the table. It's drenched on the bottom with garlic butter is just really really good. You never get bad service here no matter where you said, everyone's attentive and constantly serving your needs. Whether it's refilling your wine or asking if you need anything else it is wonderful service. The ambience or environment is quiet, we've had many romantic dinner here. First time customer with a horrible experience. The pick up order was 35 minutes late I was told it would be ready in 45 minutes. I didn't mind waiting if the food was good and would be hot? I received the order and only live 3 minutes away. The Calamari was soggy not crispy at all awful. The Garlic Bread was pale and wasn't even cooked all the way and was cold as well as seen in the picture as well. The Chicken Parm, Lasagna and Linguini were all cold. The cheese on the Chicken Parm and the Lasagna wasn't even melted as you can see in the picture. I called the restaurant to let them know about this and gave them my information. I was told that The Chef/Manager/Owner would call me back and never did. The food quality is Diner Quality at best and that's kind of a diss to Diner food because they have some great comfort food with good flavors that's served piping hot. read more

We wanted Italian food. We went to our first choice but it was an hour wait, our second choice had a two hour wait. We found this place and their pizza looked so good even though that's not what we were craving we decided to call and see if they had space they said they had a table getting up and should be ready by our arrival which is exactly what happened. Star for that since they don't take reservations. Star for cute but cliche atmosphere of old school style Italian restaurants. They also had Prosecco on tap! Right who knew!? They brought out loaves of fresh baked bread that seems like the frozen style bead from the store, well one plate was fresh and soft the other was hard but we were hungry and didn't mind. The disappointment was it was soaked in margarine or something not butter.. it was so oily waaaay too much. Ordered the appetizer which was an entree of the smoked Gouda gnocchi with blackened chicken. We were a large party of 6 and starving. Fist thing I noticed right away was the gnocchi was from a box. Come on! It's an Italian restaurant and the dish was over $20 and they couldn't be bothered to make potato gnocchi in house? It's so easy my daughter at 9 years old makes it. Smh. The chicken was dry and tasted like it had been in the refrigerator for while. Like the store bought chicken that's already cooked and cut up. It wasn't even hot. Still we were hungry at some point we chowed down. Entrees arrived Twins got meatball subs and they were huge and bland. Fries and onion ring portions huge. Son got seafood fettuccine Alfredo. I could tell the shrimp looked freezer burnt it was a weird dark pink color and he didn't finish the plate it was so large and thankfully he did not because he got sick after. If he had ate the whole plate he might have had a full food poisoning episode! I had the number 2 sampler, lasagna which I didn't eat cus I don't like ricotta but I knew that when ordering so not on them, fettuccine Alfredo and chicken parmigiana. I felt sick on the way home. I knew something wasn't right and so now as I write this the Alfredo sauce was probably bad. Husband got pizza and it did NOT look like the photos. The photos show a thick bubbly crust and this was a flat thin crust but decent. Our guest got a burger and it was pretty basic I mean how can you mess that up. He didn't say much so I don't know what he thought but it didn't look good. Our check was just under $200 with tip. Overall if you can't make Italian food fresh don't have an Italian restaurant. We love to cook and sometimes we want a night off and we pay to eat out. When we do we want to have quality food that's made fresh. Not boxed pasta or spoiled Alfredo sauce. Do better! Gino's is a neighborhood Italian restaurant that has been open since 1989; its owner doubles as the chef. Hours are 11 AM to 10 PM, but closed on Sunday. The Yelp restaurant reviews span from 2013 to present; this landmark has been open 33 years! At one time, it was the neighborhood staple. I would expect very good food from a business that managed to remain open so long. Unfortunately, I received OK food. I was a guest here w/ a local resident who resides nearby. Being selective of where I will eat, I normally research a restaurant before going; however, I didn't have time to do so until after sitting down for an early dinner. The MENU offers 8 Appetizers, 3 Burgers, 3 Subs, 3 sandwiches, 4 Flatbread Pizzas, 4 Entree Salads, 9 House Specialties (entrees), 5 Pasta Dinners, 6 Seafood Dinners, 2 Miscellaneous Dinners, 3 Healthy Choice Dinners (w/ steamed or grilled veggies), a Soup of the Day, & 5 Desserts. Chicken Fingers ($7), Cheese Ravioli ($6), & Spaghetti ($6) round out the KID'S MENU. I am in agreement w/ many Yelpers over the last two years who awarded this restaurant one to three stars. My main issue was the oil-- so much of it! I also don't believe it was olive oil due to its consistency and taste-- likely canola oil. The complementary white garlic loaf was definitely not made on site nor did it come from a local bakery. It tasted as though it was a pre-frozen bread. It would have been OK had it not sat in an oil that was not olive oil. But even in olive oil & garlic, its flavor still would have been nothing special. After eating some of the bread, we ventured on to a Large Ceasar Salad entree ($9). It looked excellent-- see pic. It didn't taste bad, but once again this salad had an oil problem. Every leaf of this OK salad was coated in oil. Apparently, the dressing is unique; the salad does not have a standard Ceasar dressing. If only it were unique without the drenching of oil. There are NO ITALIAN PIZZAS here, which was disappointing. However, there are 4 Flatbread pizzas, and diners may order a whole pizza ($16) or a half pizza ($9); it was nice having that choice. My half Margherita pizza was OK. However, the crust tasted similar to a Saltine cracker (but with less flavor), and although the crust appeared dry, my fingers and upper hand quickly became covered in oil-- see pic. Lord knows where the oil originated because it wasn't from the bottom of the crust. I also found the sauce to be uneventful. Due mostly to the oil, I would not order the pizza again. My partner in crime ordered the Black Russian Burger w/ its grilled onions and cheddar cheese. Onion Rings were the selected side. I was told both were very good. Its cost was $12 . Ordered To-Go was Baked Zita w/ beef (in lieu of sausage) @ $13-- also very good. However, the side of Italian Wedding Soup consisted of overcooked noodles in a decent broth. Now for the BIG ISSUE for me, although its likely many diners won't concur. There are NO STRAWS here and there haven't been for years. I suspect it's not a "Save the Environment" issue because the takeout containers are Styrofoam and the bags are plastic. I'm OK w/ no plastic straws, but there are no paper straws as well. As someone w/ an annoying space between two molars, I count on a straw to save me from the dreaded remnants of stuck food. I really really wanted a straw. I'm still bumming about the dearth of straws:) Now for the interior. This restaurant has three rooms, w/ a bar in one. The decor is dark and dated (see pic), although there are expensive pieces of art on some walls. Our service by young server "N" was very good. She was working on her birthday. We appreciated her friendliness, knowledge of the menu, and attentiveness. There are Craft beers available, as well as wine and sangria. The DRINK SPECIALS are: WINE Tuesday ($5), Craft, Domestic, & Imported BEER Wednesday ($3.50 & $5.00), and SANGRIA Thursday ($4). HAPPY HOUR is 11 AM to 6 PM Monday thru Friday & 11 AM to 4 PM on Saturday. House Wine is $5 & Draft BEER is $5.50. Will I return? Yes, if I'm a guest and not paying for my own food. Looking for a perfect Italian neighborhood restaurant & bar - you found it!! It's a small little hole in the wall place but with some huge flavors when it comes to the food. Our server walked us through the menu and was helpful in our selections. The Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Cream sauce was Mind Blowing!! You could just order that with the bread and have a meal! Ambiance was good. Food was just ok. I did not like the bruschetta. The margherita flatbread pizza was good but lukewarm. We also had the sampler with lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and Alfredo linguine. They were also a bit lukewarm. I did not like the lasagna. It may have been better if it was hotter. Five stars five stars fivveeeee stars!!! This restaurant is a hidden gem and a great find. I am so glad we tried this place because it did not disappoint. We ordered spaghetti with mushrooms & spinach (no meat/vegan ) and rigatoni with sausage. We also had their buffalo cauliflower which was to die for!! Literally the best I've ever had. The main courses were cooked fresh to order and full of flavor. On top of that the portions are HUGE. But don't forget the best part.....the b-r-e-a-d!! My late husband and I ate at Gino's since 1982. We were loyal until his passing in 2016. I recently took my two sister's there and they asked what was good. I said I'd never had anything bad at Gino's. Never should have said that. All three meals we ordered were close to indedible. We all three loved the bread. OK, so I called at around 3 PM to book a group of 12 for dinner. They graciously allowed us to come in even though they had a group of 32 and a group of 20 as well in the restaurant at the same time as we were . When we arrived, they had two tables for us close together so that was perfect, but I have to say the service and the food was above anything I've experienced in a long time. They did everything they could to make our experience amazing and it really really was. I would highly recommend this restaurant for small groups or large groups. read more

Huge servings for pretty cheap. I had to go to another meeting after eating here, so I powered through, but man you can get enough food for two meals if you eat here! We started with the calamari and bruschetta appetizers (each $9). When they came out my jaw dropped. The bruschetta had six large pieces! Both were good, but not great. The calamari was seasoned well, but a little too fried for my liking. The bruschetta was also good, but I like it when I can taste the fresh tomatoes and this one used other seasonings/oils to mask the tomatoes a bit. But then my entree came. I got the Cajun Seafood Salad and I have to just say it was perfection. The seasoning to the dressing, all of it was absolutely delicious. I would 100 percent come back to get this again. Also, I feel like it was relatively healthy. The best part? It was only $11. That's insane! Both Sarah S. and Sarah R., got the chicken parm and wow it was huge! They didn't even look like they made a dent. This is the type of place my husband would love. For $16 you get at least two meals. There was only one waitress at lunch, so it took a little while. We were in and out in about an hour and 15 minutes. This might not be fast enough for professionals on a lunch break, but it's fine for anyone not in a rush! It is great tuck away neighborhood restaurant. Gino do bring the taste to the table. It is good to see local restaurant make it because they have quite number of customers. My meal come with soup and I have selected the conch chowder. This Italian chowder is different taste than normal chowder. It has different the flavor with similar creamy soup. I also like the bread before meal. I have order the blackened sirloin with gnocchi smoked Gouda cream sauce. The steak was cook to order. The Gouda is place on top. It is interesting way to do it. Good quality steak. My wife have the special of the day. Grilled steak salad. This is ok. However the portion is big enough. Service is excellent. Food come out good and good temperature. We think this is a good restaurant and we will be back. read more
