We got a slice of pepperoni slice, which came out to a little under $5. It was really delicious! The thin crust is really crispy and the pepperoni is flavorful. I think for how good it was and the size, it's well worth the price! I'd love to come back and try other flavors. read more

I got the 18-inch pepperoni pizza delivered via DoorDash, and this time it actually got delivered unlike the last time. The pepperoni makes the pizza uncomfortably salty. When I say this, I mean that it makes it saltier than the pepperoni pizza (Classic Pep pizza) at Rose Pizzeria (on University Ave) which I'd say has moderate saltiness. The next issue is that it is unnecessarily very greasy, and that a few times the cheese just came off the crust...which makes me feel like the pizza is poorly made. The sauce is not spread out well so there are bites where it is just cheese with no sauce. The last issue, is that it came a full 30 minutes later than the time I had been told it would arrive. I would highly recommend avoiding this place especially since the cost does not equate to a gourmet level of quality but a horrible and distasteful quality. read more

Delicious pizza but I struggle with the limited options. This time we went with a cheese pizza because my husband and I couldn't agree on any of the toppings (he thinks the mushroom is boring, I don't care for the pepperoni--too salty for me, he doesn't like the spicy sausage & jalapeños, I hate anchovies...you get the picture). We both love their margarita pizza but that one is seasonal and they didn't have it on the menu yet. I still like Zachary's better. Yes yes I know, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Except I'm not. I'm comparing pizza to pizza. Second place goes to Cheeseboard. I give the bronze medal of pizzas to Gioia, which is pretty darn great if you ask me. This New York style pizza delivers with its chewy crust and fresh ingredients. They take tomato sauce, cheese and dough and do voodoo magic with it, because the Formaggio, while simple, was completely satisfying. Bonus: they have great salads! read more

Such great pizza. At about $28/pop, it's a nice chewy thin crust with delicious toppings. If you go only cheese, it's $23. 8 large slices, 2 slices more than filled me up. There's a line at the shop and you can order full pies or slices. There is limited seating inside (the place is tight) and an outdoor bench in the front. I called ahead and still had to wait in line to pay and pick up the pies. P.S. They also sell some limited salads and cannolis! I went with the spinach and the ricotta asparagus. The spinach, garlic, chili was fine, but actually not the pizza winner. The ricotta pie was the clear winner, which is sad for me since I love a good red sauce pizza slice. The sauce wasn't too strong or heavy and I guess my preference sides on a little more sauce. The real winners were the meat slices. I didn't taste, but damn, those looked real good. Although Gioia was a great pizza, I def made a trip from South Berkeley and parking is the worst, so I wasn't so impressed where I'd sway from my go-to's nearby: Nick's & Emelia's. This spot happens to be also in SF and I think is opening up another location or two; so they must be doing something right! read more

They decided to cut the slices they sell by half . I don't know if that's their new thing to make money or an off day. WTF. I paid $10 for what I consider the size of a single slice instead of two like I ordered and have gotten in the past. Won't be coming back. read more

I came here before the lunch rush and got the Julian slice. I've never had pizza with kale before so this was was a treat for me. They heated up my slice and the crust was thin and crunchy, my favorite kind of crust. The kale was an interesting topping and went well with the cheese. A solid place for a slice when you're in the area. read more

In the mood for a quick tasty slice of pizza and a Mexican coke? Look no further than Gioia Pizzeria! Really flavorful slices at the counter and decently priced at $4.25 a slice give or take. They have some seasonal flavors too! I had to try the Salsiccia - with sausage, fennel, jalapeño, and mozzarella sauce. It was the perfect quick lunch, and the texture was phenomenal. Slightly spicy, nice crisp dough, and really tasty flavor. Wash it all down with a crisp Mexican coke! No frills spot with some window / outside seating. Of the Pizzerias in Berkeley, Gioia is a personal favorite. While it is located quite a drive up north and further away from the UC campus, the pizza is worth the trip. Pictured are: Pepperoni Pizza and Sausage + Pepper Pizza The crust is crisp and toppings are always cooked to perfection. While I am not the biggest fan of parmesan and enjoy only Mozzarella on my pizza, these were still delicious. Berkeley staple, highly recommend! I know they also have an SF location. read more

Such a little hidden gem. My husband had the pepperoni and I had the fungi, both pizzas were delicious. Pizzas are sold by the slice or as whole pies. I love Gioia: I've tried 12 of the best rated places in the east bay and this is in the top three, above some that are nationally known. Gioia has a great selection of unique pies and it's quick. It's out of the way but worth the trip if you like a good pizza. read more

I honestly don't review other reviews anymore. Only the bad ones but. I'm from Chicago and we are known for pizza. First time I came here was years ago then I had it again before pandemic and I still think this place has some amazing pizza then a lot of places in SF. Honestly, pizza is not really a thing in Cali I feel like it. But it's okay because there's so many other amazing food out here. I love the mushroom and the cheese pizza all the flavors is just right. Just depends on what your taste palette is when it comes to pizza. read more

Pizza is very much a personal thing and I will be the first to admit that my tastes run towards New York style. I know there are those who prefer Chicago, Sicilian and other varieties. So recognizing my preferences are for the sort of pizza Gioia makes, I will try to judge them based on their own merits. And overall, the pizza is not bad. The staff at the Hopkins shop seem friendly and industrious. Considering that I walked in off the street on a Friday eve to order a whole pizza, a 45 minute wait seemed well within norms. I chose a Salsiccia, which is reasonably traditional on the east coast, mostly because I was interested in something a little spicy. When I picked up my pie, they kindly provided me with extra pickled jalapeños on the side and upon returning home, I saw it had been well-cooked: a few scorch marks on the edge of the crust, promising that crunchy quality that makes a New York style pizza so enjoyable (and possible) to eat. It smelled wonderful. When I had my first bites, I also recognized that they had used quality ingredients. The cheese was clearly fresh and I could taste the pecorino. The Sicilian sausage had a surprisingly delicate and flavorful quality. In terms of taste, it was very good. Why, then, only three stars? Simply put, the crust. This is what is sometimes called euphemistically a "wet" pizza. The crust was a gelatinous mess towards the center. Allow me to quote the owners themselves on their website: "We don't eat pizzas with a fork & knife. New Yorkers consider that uncivilized." I agree. It's a shame that it was impossible NOT to eat it that way. I tried folding lengthwise (a common NY eating strategy)--no dice. It sadly lacked the structural integrity to make eating this pizza by hand without covering your face, fingers and clothing in cheese, tomato sauce and oil. This is not a small thing. New York style crusts also have a distinct taste that goes with that stiffness. That sadly was missing. There's an old Italian saying: parla come mangi--speak like you eat--meaning speak simply or plainly. To again quote Gioia's website: "We serve simple RUSTIC food with big flavors. We like that kind of honest food." If they really believe that, I'd advise the owners: manga come parli--eat like you speak. read more

Very crispy crust, even on the bottom, never soggy despite the copious amount of tomato sauce. A lot of trial and error must have gone into the dough recipe. Their tomato sauce is especially tasty too. Best mushroom pizza in town and seasonally they do a butternut squash with blue cheese pie that is particularily delish. read more

I've long considered this THE BEST pizza especially by the slice. However I had a slice this past weekend and they served it out and it was very overcooked. The crust was burnt in sections and hard/burnt overall, and the kale was too crispy. Someone clearly re-heated it too long. Bummer. I blame quality control, whomever took it out of the oven and served it to me should have noticed it was overdone. Too bad since I haven't had pizza from there in like 5 years. I didn't have the energy to go back and tell them, which I could have done, but come on the evidence was right in front of their eyes I shouldn't have to tell them IT'S BURNT. read more

A good pizza, but not great. The pepperoni were super greasy and not very flavorful, while the cheese was barely attached to the slice, sliding off onto the plate after the first bite or two. The store was really busy and had forgotten our order when we went to pick it up, so it was nice of them to rush the pizza so that we didn't have to wait another 40min. The area around the restaurant is really cute and has a lot of options for deserts if you have a few minutes to waste. TL;DR: Okay pizza, bit expensive. read more

One of the best casual pizzerias in the East Bay. I'm talking regular pizzas too. Not like bougie hipster pizzas like Emilia's, Cheeseboard, or Nick's. I like those pizzas too. Don't get me wrong. I can't seem to find the post on someone who was asking about the best New York style slices. Gioia was one of the first ones mentioned so I just had to try it. I'm sorry but if you serve this up in New York to any New Yorker you'll be out of business on a week. It's not a terrible slice of pizza but... for five dollars I'd like it to taste a little bit more like New York. I was also very disappointed in the weight and the overall finished product. I think that their crust is probably the best thing about this pizza although still very far from New York. They're not calling this NY Style, I think people in general are claiming that. I'm checking out Arinell's and I-slice soon. PS we won't get into the young lady at the counter... let's just say "0" everything including welcoming. read more

I lived in NY for almost 5 years and tried the best and the worst of slices and let me tell you- this place competes with the best of them. Their slices are divine that I had their pep slice warmed up- it was gooey, it was crispy and it was heaven. I literally went back in line and got more slices to go home. This is a really solid pizza place. One of my friends found it to be a bit too greasy, but I thought it was a good amount of grease (it's pizza, after all). They're really fast when you swing by to pick up, as they have pizzas on display that you directly pick slices from. Each flavor tastes distinctly different which helps if you're seeking variety, and one of my friends who is particularly picky about pizza (e.g. he thinks Tony's Pizza Napoletana in SF is just okay) thought Gioia's pizza is amazing. read more

Ordered a whole Margherita pie and highly regretted it. It was full of extremely tart and sweet chunky tomato sauce that was probably fit for only a cheap bolognese sauce. I scraped off almost all of it on two slices (see pic) and was left with little cheese and dough. I give it only one star but here chose three because on a good day, Gioia's makes solid spinach pizzas and mushroom pizzas. Just don't order the margherita. read more

History

Established in 2004.

Gioia Pizzeria was founded in May of 2004 by Will and Karen Gioia. Located on Hopkins Street in North Berkeley, Gioia is nestled in a food-lover's paradise frequented by neighborhood residents partaking of the delights of the street. For Karen and Will being part of the community is essential. They feel that a connection with a community is ideal for their business, which they envision as a family run joint selling the thin crust, east-coast style pizza of Will's childhood, with a focus on the organic, sustainably raised local ingredients so ready available in California. A defining childhood moment of Will's is going down the street for a slice and a Coke. Will wanted to bring that tradition to the kids of his Berkeley neighborhood, as well as working families and anyone who can appreciate grabbing a slice or a pie on the run, or sitting on one of the stools in the store watching the pizza makers spin dough and their neighbors coming and going.

Meet the Manager: Art K.

Gioia Pizzeria takes the best of pizza traditions from the old world and the new. Classic flavors and ingredients such as artisanally made sausage, fresh mozzarella cheese and arugula come together in inspired traditional ways. In 2005 Art Kinsey joined Gioia Pizzeria as General Manager. His "passion for people and pizza" permeates the place as much as the enticing smell of pepperoni and cheese. Art started early in the restaurant business, working in a neighbor's restaurant in the 8th grade. He made a career detour as an options market maker on the Pacific Stock Exchange in San Francisco, but eventually returned to "normal hours" and "the love of good food and good people" when he joined Gioia. He and Will share a love of family and cooking which is why Art says, "Our customers are like family. Kids, adults and even the dogs that beg for crust are why we love delivering the pies and the slices. It's more than a slice of life, it's a slice of heaven."

Personally, I find their pizzas to be a bit on the heavier side with their generous amounts of sauce, but great if you're in the mood for some mouth-watering greasy saucy pizza. They operate on a grab n go service, but there are seats and a few standing tables outside. Overall, definitely a pizza spot worth going to when you're in Berkeley!

I love, love, love when the rare occasion happens that I get to enjoy BEEF PEPPERONI on my pizza. OK besides that, the pizza is amazing. I was literally closing my eyes and in my happy place the whole time. Now for those that never had BEEF PEPPERONI, please go try it. It is so much higher quality than pork pepperoni, so I've been told. I plan to make many more trips in the near future, thats how excited it made me. By the way I loved the cheese just as much, yum yummy. Pro tip: parking is hard, obviously, downtown Berkeley and all. So either walk, Uber, find parking, take the bus, or do as I do and tag team it and drop off a friend to go order for the whole car and drive around until they are ready to be picked up. So me and my son door dashed food from here and once "delivered" it was... not there. So basically someone stole it. Yikes. Me and girlfriend head over there to figure out why we didn't get the food. Mind you I guess this was during final season so people steal? Wtf?!? But when we go to this place they ACCUSE ME of stealing the food even after I showed them the order and everything and what not so we had to wait for the next door dasher to literally hand me the food. Two grown men yelling at two young ladies. Totally rude and unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend this place to a lot of people. Ambiance wasn't, food was extremely disappointing, and expensive.
