Whoa this place was going off today...avoid high traffic times and try and go off peak. It was more manageable by the time we were leaving. The brisket sandwich yum. We ate there Sunday afternoon. The set-up is confusing, the menu was confusing and there was lots of confusion behind the counter. One of us had a sandwich and the other two had pizza slices because we could point and see what we were getting. The order was screwed up and they never did deliver all the food. You get your own water from a faucet sticking out of the wall? No ice, little glasses, was it at least filtered? I know the idea is that you should be buying a beverage but I wanted water, and they made sure it was as unappetizing as possible. At least throw away the crummy aluminum water pitcher and replace it with a stainless steel one. One if us had ginger-lemonade. It was small and not-worth the $3.00+ they charged. The bill was $68.50 for the three of us and we did not have much food. So they charge a lot, the food was not great, BUT you do get a take-a-number from the back wall and get to stand at a counter with the other confused people till your number is called: "92?, 93?, 94?, 95 can I help you? oh wait here comes 92! You'll be next" We ate outside and swatted flies on an uncomfortable bench. The food was not note-worthy. The pizza has a dry, tough bottom. I'm sure the place is printing money, it was super busy. Only in LA! For what we spent we should have been able to sit down, get decent service and have decent food too. I would buy a loaf of bread next time, and make sandwiches at home. I live nearby and come often. Everything I've tried is good; some is really great. Pastries & bread are all top notch. Best matcha in the city (even better than Alfreds and Cha cha). However, the line (even just for bread or coffee) is always long and crazy slow. The ticketing system is also kind of a mess. It's really crowded on the weekends which makes it kinda miserable. The customer service is also kinda shit. I order the same drink every time I'm in - I know exactly what I want and how to order it. Three times they made it wrong (hot vs iced), and it's always appalling how they treat me when I ask for it to be corrected. They also move at the pace of a sloth on indica. The person helping me today walked away 3 times while he was taking my order, literally just walked away as I was mid sentence. They talk amongst themselves and walk around looking smug and self important but act like helping a customer is beneath them. The food is expensive but very good. A review of the Turkey Butcher (sandwich) at Gjusta: The sandwich is kind of like the Rothko of sandwiches. I don't know if it's wholly interpretable outside of some philosophical context. Yeah, other places put turkey on bread, but they don't JUST put turkey on bread. Inevitably one finds all manner of other ingredients, from vegetables to piles of bacon, slathering of mayo, aioli, or pesto, and perhaps some kind of cheese. The turkey on most other sandwiches is also usually something else, very thinly sliced, somewhat dry, more of a strict "deli" kind of setup in a traditional sense. It's not necessarily bad, but turkey is always a very simple, lean meat used as the backbone of constructing more holistic sandwiches. The popularity of the BLT, essentially a paired down club sandwich which eliminates the turkey element, reveals a norm within sandwich culture (speaking broadly about America here, not globally obviously), where turkey is simply not considered a privileged item, rather something that is so bland that a sandwich can be markedly improved in form by its removal. Perhaps the fact that turkey is strongly associated with various holidays also helps position it as something not essential in everyday cooking sandwiches. This utterly boring cultural perspective on turkey is perhaps why the turkey leg on the menu of Animal is so provocative of a dish. What Wes Avila calls Alta California cuisine has attempted to highlight turkey as well such as at Corazon y Miel, Broken Spanish, and even Mercado. At the same time, the dining culture of Los Angeles since approximately 2009 has been at least partly dominated by what is essentially "gut bomb fusion" fueled by the famous Kogi truck, and the ensuing empire of Roy Choi, but which can also be seen clearly in Josef Centeno's Bäco's (his "Original" has no less than 3 sauces + dressing on a salad), the pastrami flatbread of Eat.Drink.Americano, the intensely color, explosive flavors of Starry Kitchen (now Button Mash), the slick Philippino fusion of Belly and Snout's adobo grilled cheese, the wildly sauced flavors of Seoul Sausage Co's Korean sausages and galbi poutine, etc... even in the elaborate creations of Guerilla Taco's to an extent that use so many ingredients and bold sauces. Thus the reigning trend in LA cuisine (though of course not the only one by any means) has been a kind of totalism. As a contrast, counterculture movement within the dining scene, a sort of minimalism has also been growing in LA, though. Gjusta is essentially a temple of minimalism, or perhaps a dojo would make a better metaphor given the emphasis of knife skills in so many of the items. Gjusta seeks to take simple ingredients, and elevate them to the point where they are the ideal versions of themselves, and presented in simple pairings that highlight their essence, just as Rothko took colors, and presented them as simple, raw emotions in simple pairings. It is against this backdrop that one must understand the turkey butcher sandwich at Gjusta. The turkey is given as much attention in the cooking process as the porchetta, the brisket, or the prime rib (all of which are glorified, privileged meats everywhere else). The knife skills/butchery of the turkey are also thusly elevated so that all of the sections of the turkey are highlighted equally, the breast, the thigh, the fat. Turkey is not presented in such a fashion anywhere else (that is currently known about). Here, the turkey is elevated to the same status as something like porchetta (which it seems every new restaurant must have on its menu lately). No one else slices turkey so thick, so boldly, with such fat laced through it, combining all the parts of the turkey. The bread, of course, is incredibly simple as well, but there are odes written to the simple glory of Gjusta's bread, so I need to go on about it. These then are the two basic items: bread + turkey; the sandwich is paired down to a raw, emotional essence as when Rothko presented two shades of red along each other to show the pure emotional power of each. The sauce of the turkey's juices taken from the cooking process makes the "essence" more ostensibly by creating that effect of framing the hyper-minimalism in a thin line of a third "color". The incredibly simple combination of turkey, bread, and jus can be seen as the apotheosis of a minimalist movement rising within LA cuisine; it showcases these simple ingredients in their most pure form which in turn reveal to us the extreme emotion involved in these basic elements of the form of a sandwich; the turkey and bread are highlighted in the same way Rothko's highlighting of a few basic colors reveals the deep emotional content latent in the basic color forms of paintings. read more

Great-looking space with great-tasting food. The croque madame was excellent, and the baked eggs were so flavorful. The sauce that the eggs came in was like a pasta sauce with a touch of indian curry flavor. The two downsides were that a) the ordering system is a bit confusing (you have to grab a numbered ticket and wait for a worker to call your number to order) and b) the parking and seating situation seem like they could be terrible when busy. They have a free lot to park in, but it and the seating inside are really limited for such a popular restaurant. We came at 9ish am on a Monday morning however and it wasn't too busy at all, so I'm guessing weekday mornings are your best bet for this place. read more

My angsty but misunderstood Nirvana-esque children were researching Nietzsche during dinner and I told them be more than gjust a number. They responded by throwing my brownie across the restaurant. After a great brunch experience at Gjelina, we decided to try out the sister restaurant Gjusta after seeing pictures of delicious smoked fish sandwiches and plates. We got here around 9 on a Saturday to avoid long lines, but there was already a small crowd of people. Since it was our first time, the ordering process was rather confusing. You don't have to get a number if you just want to order from the menu, you can just go to the express line. But if you want to order from any of the display cases, then you have to take a number and wait til your number is called. We ended up just ordering from the menu and luckily, the girl taking our order was really nice and explained everything. After you order, there's a counter at the end of the line where you can wait for your food and just eat there, or you can go to the backyard where there are some tables on a first come first serve basis. When we got our food, all the tables outside were taken, so we just ate while standing at the counter, then half way through the meal I spotted an open table and we finally moved outside. Now onto the food, I got the smoked fish and egg plate, and it was DELICIOUS! The soft egg was perfect and the smoked salmon was really good with some labnah, capers, and pickled onions. This is not the best place if you want to have a nice sit-down brunch with a group of friends, but it's perfect if you just want to grab a casual breakfast or brunch and don't mind the uncertainty of not having a table right away. read more

I've been here about a dozen times now. Why do I keep coming back? It's close and I love whoever does the baking here. But most times, I feel like I should have just gone somewhere else. I'd give it 2.5 stars if I could. PROS: pastries and flatbread and shakes are consistently delicious. LOVE their mochi pastries. And the salads are bright and flavorful. The smoked/cured foods were okay, but not for the money. CONS: The thing that makes me feel like an idiot for going here is the service. Some of these attendants could not be bothered. And flat out ignore me. Why am I spending money at a place I feel unwelcomed? I really should stop coming here. It's way too much money to spend on a sour dining experience. Love this place, not sure why people find it so confusing. During my first visit, it seemed very clear to me that there were two lines and I saw the number ticker on the wall. I was a little uncertain the difference between the lines, but assumed that the short one was for pastries. I made my way up to the order taker and asked and she explained. Easy peasy. My wait once grabbing my ticket number I've never had more than a 10 minute wait for my number to be called. The food is the best part about this place. I want to go to there every day so that I can try everything! So far I have had the smoked fish with egg plate, tried the herbed lox, salmon belly, and the mackerel. I have had their seasonal pie, which was an apple raspberry and it was INCREDIBLE! I have had the Baklava Croissant, which by every right deserved to be a proper noun. So creative and delicious. Last thing I tried was the mushroom rice bowl, which was tasty but not extraordinary. I also tried a bite of the porridge waffle which I would probably get next time. They smoke their own fish (and meats, if you eat meat). They have amazing cheeses and jars and jars of dips/spreads/deliciousness to take home and try. I will try them all and give an update soon. There's a reason why hipster types aren't usually businesspeople - I think some sort of loose logic applies to creating a "hipster chic" kind of dining experience in Venice and expecting it to perform well as a business. The place is an absolute chaotic nightmare. It's the polar opposite of a stress free dining. Wait in line to order and hope for the best on getting your drinks and food (and good luck if the food that you are served makes it to you hot).
