Gjusta is an institution, a bakery that has a reputation as a high quality, high integrity establishment that is passionate about the products it churns out. I gave it 4 on 5 stars because of the eye-watering pricing. I got a veggie sandwich and after taxes it was close to $24. It didn't leave me full and didn't come with any accoutrements or sides. It was delicious. Sesame whole wheat bread was excellent. Toppings were fresh, from peperonata, fennel, tomato, cucumber, radish, pickled turnips, herbs & sprouts, avocado and hummus. I just find it hard to justify $24 for a veggie sandwich. Esp. when Bread Head on Montana has an equally compelling one for $16. Or there are excellent Bun mi's for under $15. Even the cheese store on Beverly Hills has their immaculate La Zucca for $19. The flavors are excellent. Everything is great. Except for the Erewohn level pricing. Will I be back for takeout, probably not. I will be back for in-person dining, esp. their hot breakfast and lunch items. read more

Honestly I've finally decided I'm over this place and you all should be too. It takes 20-30 min to order the most expensive small plate of breakfast food you'll ever see and it's really nothing that will blow your mind. A salmon roe bagel is $36. It's honestly insulting that they charge what they do but thats overpriced bougie Venice food for ya. Want to modify the breakfast sandwich which is eggs sauce and bacon on a bun to a bagel .. their answer is no... Jyan Isaac is better, faster, way bigger portions. Tartine has better bread. I really wanted to love Gjusta. The atmosphere is great, the patio is beautiful, and the breakfast burrito had good flavor with bacon, eggs, melted cheese, and a tasty green salsa. What really ruined the experience, though, was the service. My $20 breakfast burrito arrived well before my $5.50 cappuccino, which made no sense. I waited over 30 minutes for the coffee and had to ask three separate times where it was. Finally, I walked inside, saw a barista making a cappuccino, and asked, "Is that for Table 100?" It was. Only then did it finally make its way to my table. That's simply unacceptable. Spending nearly $28 for breakfast sets a certain expectation. I don't mind paying premium prices for premium food and service, but this visit didn't deliver either. The food was good--not exceptional--and the service fell well below what I'd expect at this price point. I can see why people like Gjusta, and I hope this was just an off day, but based on this experience, it's hard to justify the cost. Gjusta is one of those places that feels uniquely Venice. The space has a cool warehouse-style feel with plenty of outdoor seating and a patio that makes it easy to hang out and enjoy your food. I built my own sandwich on a closed baguette with octopus, arugula, tomato, olive oil, and black pepper. The ingredients tasted fresh and high quality, and the sandwich was ready surprisingly fast. At nearly $20 after tax, it's definitely on the expensive side for a sandwich, but that's somewhat expected here. But once your number is called and you place your order the food came out quite quickly. We had ordered the Greek Salad, a couple of sandwiches and a tart. Decided to check out Venice Beach today and went to Gjusta for lunch. We ordered a pecan roll from their bakery items to start off. It was light a fluffy but wished there was more pecans as it was not sweet enough. It was more croissant like but good nonetheless. For our entrees we got the pastrami sandwich and breakfast burrito. The pastrami sandwich was a little oily but it was flavorful. The pastrami was also a little salty for my taste. The bread was nice and crunchy which was a plus. The breakfast burrito was good. You can taste all the ingredients inside. It was just a little saucy as it was leaking the liquids inside. This is a nice area to people watch and soak up the LA sun. Most of their seating is outside with a few seats inside and patio area. They are dog friendly but not in the patio area. Most of their items on their menu were averaging about $20 which is not bad for the area. Did not get to try their cafe area as we were going to grab coffee at another place but others were ordering it. Nice environment and place to people watch and everyone was friendly. This place seemed super crowded and overwhelming at first which would make sense since it's an LA staple, but the line did move fairly quickly and the servers were so friendly. I tried to get the breakfast sandwich on gluten free bread but they said they couldn't do that for some reason so I got the soft scramble with gluten free bread instead. I was craving a sandwich initially but this did turn out really good and got me to try something new! They have a whole case of pastries that looked divine including a few gluten free ones that I will definitely be grabbing next time. They have a massive patio so while it is crowded you can mill about to find a seat by the time your food is ready. I left Gjusta feeling like I rode an emotional rollercoaster. Parking was decent on a Saturday afternoon. We grabbed a ticket at the front and waited about 25 minutes to order at the counter. I loved meandering through their small shop and the art gallery next door. Stepping onto their patio, I felt like I was hanging out in the backyard of a rustic farmhouse. Very charming. Here's where the emotional rollercoaster began: 1/5 Chopped Italian Salad - Not the Chopped Italian being chopped! This was quite disappointing...there was too much acidity, and the structure of a chopped Italian was lost here. The cheese choice was also off. Not sure what cauliflower was doing here. Overall, a really dry, unpalatable salad. 5/5 Iced Flat Whites - I saw another Yelper post these, and I can confirm they are as delicious as they look. 4/5 Pastrami Reuben - One of the better pastrami reubens I've had. The rye was the star of the show. Even though it was a pastrami sandwich, it felt light and healthy. Pickle was a NO. Not tangy, but very salty and watery. N/A Tuna Conserva - Only took one bite. 100000/5 Banana Cream Pie - CARRIED this meal. Not too sweet = perfection. The crust was my favorite part. I would order a whole pie. I stopped in for lunch yesterday hoping to eat on the beautiful garden patio but alas, the patio was full at 11:30 a.m. Bummer! We grabbed seats at the counter which definitely changed the experience. I love the rustic warehouse interior and have been eating at Gjusta for many years. The food is always delicious and the service is friendly and helpful. The Italian sandwich is a meal on its own-a ciabatta baguette, sopressata, mortadella, ham, chopped escarole, pickled peppers, tomatoes, onions, fontina, mayonnaise and vinaigrette. This sandwich is HUGE! Just a warning...We also had the Pork and Beef Meatball sandwich on ciabatta with burrata and parmesan. Personally, I would have loved more cheese but the sandwich was solid. We also had the shortbread, walnut, and cardamom cookies which my shortbread aficionado friend proclaimed, "delicious." I, on the other had, had what I think might be LA's best sea salt chocolate chip cookie. Stopped by Gjusta to pick up a sourdough loaf and immediately understood why people love this place so much. The bread is exceptional. Deeply flavorful, perfectly textured, and the kind of loaf you start planning meals around the second you get home. The pastry selection looked absolutely divine, and the whole space has that beautiful balance of rustic bakery, neighborhood market, and elevated food hall. Shelves lined with honey, olive oils, preserves, and little specialty goods make it impossible not to wander around for a bit longer than intended. The food here is among the best in LA. The service is fantastic and the ambiance is great too. Feasted on an herbed lox and bagel with all the veggies and the tomato confeit with anchovy. An iced latte and fresh squeezed orange juice were the drinks. I had heard about this place for a while and finally arrived to the party today. My wife really enjoyed the chocolate croissant. The breakfast burrito was a bit pricey and had too many potatoes, as seen in the photo. It was an artsy take on the dish, which we enjoyed, but the price was steep, so we probably won't order it again. The lattes were decent. The service was a bit spotty because they were busy. We had to get our own napkins, which wasn't a big deal. I was surprised that gratuity was automatically added to the bill, regardless of the party size. Overall, everything was expensive, and I'm not sure the value was there, but it was a place we could check off the list. This place is going downhill fast. It used to be my favorite Sunday brunch spot, but I don't think I'll be coming back. We ordered the shakshuka, and it took 45 minutes to arrive without the bread that comes with it, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. We asked our server if the bread was on the way, and he said he would check. Another 30 minutes passed, the food was super cold, and we were still waiting for a bread. At that point, we politely asked if they could take back the dish that had been sitting on the table for over an hour and refund us. To his credit, the server did process the refund, but there was no apology. Instead, we were met with attitude, as if we had done something wrong. It's hard to understand how difficult it would have been to bring two slices of bread, the one thing you actually need to eat the dish. It was our first time at Gjusta and everything was delightful. Know that there is an express line where you can get items more quickly, but if you want to dine in, they have a ticketing system that works efficiently. This morning I was at the Santa Monica farmers market. I decided to try the croissants at Gjusta. They had high ratings from various sources of making one of best croissant in LA. Gjusta is located in a residential area of Venice. There's free street parking in the area. When you walk in, they have 2 lines. One for dine in and the other for express order. The showcases were nicely displayed and labeled. I ordered my usual, butter croissant. I also saw a Tahini croissant that I wanted to try. Gjusta adds on 15% for employees benefits and I gave them an additional 5% tip. The Tahini croissant was not what I expected. I expected a tangy filling. Instead, it was sweet inside. The croissant was soft and had an aftertaste. Very disappointed. Then I had the butter croissant. Soft, not crunchy. No buttery taste. If you blindfold me and gave me this croissant and ask me where it was made, I would say Costco. This croissant doesn't deserve a passing grade. This place is almost always packed. Please note there are two sections the cafe area and the normal area. The cafe is based on a line system but the normal area requires you to grab a ticket. They have a few signs stating such but it is easy to miss. It's like a deli counter where they call your name. I've been here a few times and they are known for their breads. I got the brisket bahn mi this time. It was alright. It was a little messy to eat since a lot of the items fell out and pretty pricey but that is expected since it's venice. I'm surprised I've never reviewed this place before since I've always been a fan of this place. While not cheap, the bakery is excellent. The tahini croissant is delicious and not too sweet. From a plain croissant perspective I prefer Tartine but the tahini filling is excellent, not too sweet with a lot of chunky sesame paste and seeds so it tastes like a freshly ground chunky tahini paste. OVERALL: I DREAM OF GJUSTA. Gjusta is one of those Westside LA staples where the weekend line is guaranteed to be long, but almost always worth the wait. That said I strongly prefer going a weekday off-peak hours to avoid the line. On a Saturday or Sunday, you can easily wait 45 minutes just to place your order. Now the food. This is hands down my favorite breakfast / brunch / lunch spot in all of Los Angeles, and dinner would join that list if they offered it. I have worked my way through much of the menu and can honestly say I have never ordered a dish that did not hit. Standouts include their iconic in-house baked bread (seeded rye is my personal fave), the salmon bowl topped with romesco sauce, the massive steak and eggs plate (offered weekends only), and of course the famous fish plate that comes with 3-5 cured fishes of your choosing served with bread and all the fixings. I highly recommend ordering family style with friends so you can taste the rainbow. On the sweets side, Gjusta is famous for its pastries, but for me it's the tahini brownie and the chocolate avocado mousse. Both are a dream for chocolate lovers. On the service, some people take issue with the service style here since they are not big on modifications or extra requests, but I always leave Gjusta feeling deeply satiated and genuinely happy. You just have to go knowing that there might be a wait, and you should be ready and decisive when placing your order. On the ambiance, the environment is effortlessly charming with an international feel, and a communal courtyard vibe where you are just as likely to run into a neighbor as you are the star of the last movie you watched. The olive trees add a subtle Italian flair and there is a palpable levity to the outside area. In conclusion, I used to crave Erewhon when I leave LA. These days, I dream of Gjusta. read more
