Decided to try a new place for breakfast today.. We ended up here and it was okay. Had to try the sweet potato puffs as it seemed it was the rave here, and honestly they were not that great. Coffee tasted burnt and watered down, and trust me I know Coffee- I love coffee, but this coffee was just not good at all. I ordered the deuces plate with mini waffles, which came with 2 eggs, 2 sausages, and 2 bacon. The waffles were amazing, but then we went downhill on the bacon. It tasted as if the bacon had been there since yesterday, and had those towel residue or what not on it from patting down the grease. The sausages were ok as well. My daughter and I went to this place for the first time last week. It's a bright and airy place that, even though you're not outside, it feels like you are. Nicely decorated and roomy booths. Table placement is nice and you don't feel crowded in. Eggs scrambled soft is my main breakfast and it's really, really hard to find a breakfast restaurant that serves them correctly but this place has the best scrambled soft eggs I've had in a long time. Done to perfection. My daughter had one of the skillets and it was huge. She loved it. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient without being overbearing and kept an eye on us to refill our coffee and to check if we needed anything. That brings me to the only reason I give this place four and not five stars. The coffee. I don't know if it's always like this but it had to be the weakest coffee I've ever had in a restaurant. It was disappointing to be sure because I do like my coffee but the rest of our meal was so good that it can be forgiven. If you're looking for a good breakfast, go here. I'm not sure why this place isn't more highly rated. Without a doubt, the best breakfast place in the Northwest Suburbs. I've been to all the Egg Harbors, Butterfield's, Dansby Station, Egg'lectic, Jelly N Jam, Blueberry Hill, Honey Jam and even Quincy's. This is by far #1 followed closely by The Baked Apple. Their service is always excellent, even when they're close to closing. The atmosphere is great and seating is ample where the wait is never terrible and the food is consistently excellent. Portions are excellently sized, and their sides are an entree in and of themselves. The skirt steak skillet is excellent and their berry sweet crepes are to die for. This establishment does not care about the health and safety of its customers. Not only do they not enforce social distancing (their patio is consistently packed like a can of sardines), but they do not handle their faults in any sort of professional manner. My significant other, who has in the past been in anaphylactic shock from his allergy to all nuts, placed an order for granola-topped pancakes (Blue Crunch Cakes) yesterday. Nowhere on the menu did it indicate that the item contained nuts, yet other menu items included the detail of containing "slivered almonds" (which the granola apparently contained). By the time my partner noticed there were almonds in his meal, he had already eaten the majority of it. By the grace of God, he did not have a serious reaction. He called this restaurant to advise them of their fault and the person on the phone offered no condolences other than "I'm sorry, we'll update the website". Which they have not yet done. The person on the phone said "Yes, the granola contains nuts". If they knew this, why would they not include this detail on their menu. Especially since they are now so dependent on carry out orders, why not provide all important information on their online menu? How lucky they are that my partner suffered no serious reaction. We enjoyed a business lunch here. Most of us had soups, a couple had sandwiches, and I had a taco salad. The service was prompt and friendly, with our server always checking on us to be sure we had full drinks and everything we needed. The owner (I think) was always present, making sure things were going smoothly. The salad was only OK, but typical fare for this type of family restaurant. The amount was plenty, but the flavor bland. Not bad, just very... American. ;-) Those who had Iced Tea had almost all ice, and said it tasted very watered down. I'd recommend getting the iced tea with little or no ice, adding it as needed. Overall, a fair meal for the price. This is a cute little family oriented diner. What I love the most about this place is the staff. Even when I don't get good service I get good service. They open super early and are as good of a brunch as you're going to find this far in the burbs. They used to have booze but that changed awhile ago. They have a pretty good menu. I've never had any non breakfast foods but why go to a cute charming diner like this and not order the delicious cinnamon swirl french toast?! And the bacon. Don't even get me started on the bacon. What is a clean & friendly cafe is elevated by the wonderful staff. Always a smiling face to greet you and wonderful wait staff. All foods are VERY fresh & home made. It's not all Kraft Services. And while you will find some of the expected selections that many neighborhood places serve... one of their stand out meals is... their Rueben. For the corned beef enthusiast you will not find a better Rueben sandwich in the area. The warm, gooey goodness of the cheese & great cut of corned beef is more than satisfying. It's damn good. I came here a lot as a kid, but then went without Glen Oak for many, many years. In that time, it has switched a bit - the interior is brighter and a bit nicer, and the menu has both basics and some fancier things. So, with some nostalgia, three of us decided to give it a try on a Friday morning recently. It was fairly quiet on this Friday morning, and service was fast and efficient. I ordered a "Deuces" which was two eggs, two slices of bacon, two links of sausage, and a choice of either two pancakes, two slices of french toast, two crepes, or biscuits and gravy. I ordered it with eggs over easy and plain crepes, and my wife ordered it with scrambled eggs and french toast. Both were very good, including perfectly cooked eggs. My mother ordered what I almost ordered, which was German Benedict - eggs benedict on potato pancakes, which had a ton of really good flavor. All in all, the bill was about $30 with tax but without any drinks, and I felt that was fair. I would certainly return on my next stop back in Glen Ellyn. read more

A much better iteration of the family restaurant it replaced. We stopped here for breakfast after a doctor's appointment, and I got myself a skillet. I don't remember too much about the skillet; it was pretty good, the potatoes needed a little salt, but there's good coffee to be had. Portion size was reasonable. The interior of the restaurant is much nicer than it once was. Bright, open, airy; more or less the complete opposite of the restaurant it replaced. Meh it's ok I'm vegan and I get a skillet with veggies, eggs on the side (my boyfriend eats them) and it's ok I just don't like how that's literally the only thing that I can eat other than a garden salad. If I get coffee there's not a dairy free option. Even their veggie burger has cheese in it which no one could figure out. The woman at the front didn't know the cook didn't know, the box didn't even say (that's what I was told) they had to pick one apart. My boyfriend likes it but I think it's mainly because it's close to our house. If you're vegan or have a dairy allergy then it's not the place you want to go to. Then I ordered a grill chicken sandwich and the chicken was so dry and over cooked it was like leather. Could not eat it. Then I gave them one more shot today and why I did I don't know. LOVE THIS PLACE. Really... this place has done a total 180. There is a new owner who, first off, has remodeled the entire place (totally updated and so clean). Next, the food is much better than with the previous owner. So the food... The fluffy omelet I had was so good and cooked perfectly. Another time, I had a salad (granny salad). It was delicious- huge portion too. Oh and I shouldn't forget their catepillar pancakes- both my kids love the food and ask to go there every time we eat out. My husband had the chicken wrap and asked me to pick him up another (to go) the following day! The service.... The owner greets everyone at the door, genuinely cares about the feedback and the community. He really makes sure people are enjoying their visit to Glen Oak. Even my 4 year old commented on how he was really nice (probably because he let them pick some toys from the treasure chest!). My waitress was so nice as well- overall, the service was great. We have been visiting many breakfast locations in the area for the fun of it. Some are fancier or pricier than others. Every time we leave a new place we say, "I wish I would have eaten at Glen Oak Cafe instead." The food is consistently very good, the atmosphere is welcoming, it is well lit, clean, and an overall fun place to eat. We appreciate that they have gluten free options and are willing to work with specialty orders when needed.
