The food is terrible and bland. We ordered a chicken dish and the chicken was like chewing on rubber soaked in alcohol. It was disgusting. The service was overbearing and inefficient. They kept asking us if we needed anything every 10minutes. We asked the manager to turn down the music because it was so loud and he immediately snapped an attitude. You can tell by his poor management his staff seem to be on edge and very disgruntled. Time to time there were smell of old garbage inside the restaurant. Burrata was amazing, try it with the Gnocco dough and the Tagliatelle is one of the best I've had in the city. I absolutely loved the food and the service. All their pastas are el dente, perfectly cooked, perfect ingredients. Their prosciutto de parma was even perfect. Finally the service was really remarkable. Both attentive but also not burdening/totally chill. Lorenzo is seriously both warm and really a kind man. The back area seating is beautiful! My only complaint is the back area seating has flies all over, which unfortunately I know is totally natural and understandable with that kind of seating. I really recommend the macaroni. I'm pretty sure it's all homemade considering even the texture, shape, and color of the macaroni. Completely delicious. Really, really recommend this place for delicious, and more importantly, authentic food. read more

Walking out of Gnocco I had the same feeling I get after watching a good movie without having even seen the trailer. Expectations can sometimes just kill the experience and it is precisely the lack of expectations in this case that worked to Gnocco's benefit. A solid Italian fare, appropriately priced and hidden enough to get seated immediately. I believe they only take CASH. If it were a few bucks cheaper I would have thrown in the last star. But overall great dining experience and it looks like it would be great for groups. I know I'll be back for sure. read more

As an appetizer we got the Gnocco with Italian cold cuts and a cheese platter. The cheese was amazing. We also got Carpaccio di Manzo con Rucola e Grana which is a beef carpaccio and though I was skeptical about trying it, it wasn't bad at all. For my entree, I got the Tagliata di Manzo con Grana, Pomodorini e Rucola which is Grilled sliced beef rib eye with parmigiano cheese, grape tomatoes and baby arugula. By far one of the best meals I've had at a restaurant. It was love. I definitely recommend going to Gnocco. read more

I came here with a group of 10 for a birthday dinner, so I realize that we were a large and loud group. That said, there were some issues with the service: First they brought out the wrong salad, then they brought out the wrong pizza, making two people wait an extra 10 minutes for their food. To apologize, the waiter said he would give us a nutella dessert pizza for free. Fine. When we got the check, however, they had charged us for the dessert...twice. Add another 10 minutes of confusion to fix the error and get a new check. Finally, when we paid our pile of cash (only cash and AmEx accepted) they told us we were $80 short, which was not the case. Two separate employees had to re-count it, only to conclude that we had the right total. Basically, it took us an extra 20-30 minutes just to pay and get out of there once we were finished, which was not ideal. Gnocco still deserves three stars, though, because the food was delicious. The pizza is the perfect size for two people to share, with the thin crust I love and generous toppings. We had the Emiliana - prosciutto, arugula and parmesan - and I would highly recommend it. It didn't feel heavy or greasy at all, and all the ingredients were high quality. I also enjoyed the gnocco, but really you can't go wrong with fried dough. read more

Team: I live right near this place and was like 'ok LD - you gotta try so you have a go to place for your pasta cravings'. Tonight was that night and boy I'm glad I followed instinct! The initial greeter (owner?) was super nice and sensed my instinct that it would be weird if I sat at the bar and ate by myself (it's not that type of bar setup) but happily directed the host to put me at a table. Host was super nice - helped me log into the free WiFi and entertained my sentiments on 'how hungry am I?' And 'I want carbs'. Then they had a table of twelve on deck and graciously asked me to move, comping my wine and just being generally awesome. I had the lamb for my main and the prosciutto / moz appetizer - both really, really good. I also legit liked the wine I had. All in all - five stars for food, GREAT personalities and I will be back again for my next craving!! Also will probably order my pizza from here too - two paws up!! read more

My friend took me here once many many years back (same friend who took me to 8st kitchen -- clearly he has great taste -- his name is vimal v. you should follow him) and I have been a loyal fan since. The atmosphere is wonderful, I like any place with low lighting and a cozy feel. The service has always been very friendly as well. This place is great for both a date and medium-large group dinners because they have big circular tables in the back (so much better than long rectangular tables). The front of the restaurant is better for a more intimate setting and the back is better for groups. The Sangiovese wine is great and the best dish in the house is the "Mezzi Rigatoni Con Salsiccia E Broccoli rigatoni pasta with spicy italian sausage and broccoli rabe." read more

I made a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday for 6 people at Gnocco the night before. I was really excited they had something available for a larger party on such short notice. My bf screwed up and made a reservation at a restaurant he thought was a different spot so we were in desperate need of something good for a bit of a celebration. Gnocco called the day of the reservation to confirm (points there). When we arrived with our box of cupcakes for dessert, a man behind a pizza counter joked that we brought them for him and then offered to put them in the fridge until we were ready to eat. We were sat at a nicely sized round table in the rear of the restaurant and were happy with the ambiance. We even spotted a celeb a table away, and got a little excited about it. :-) The food was pretty yummy and the bottles of wine weren't too expensive. We indulged in some appetizers and 2 bottles of wine. A friend decided on pizza and it was HUGE. My lasagna was pretty good and my boyfriend is still raving about his salmon dish. Here is where I had to knock this restaurant down a couple stars. When we got the bill, the waiter charged us for an extra bottle of wine. We told him early on that we needed to be out of the restaurant by 10 for a bar reservation for post dinner drinks (our reservation was at 8--plenty of time) and he almost seemed to be ignoring us after dropping the check, hoping we wouldn't notice the 3rd bottle of wine we didn't order. It took him forever to fix that and we were getting tighter on time. Then when we put $200 in cash in the bill and an American Express in to cover the rest of the check (they only take Amex or cash---also a bummer), he charged everything on the American Express and took the $200. Half of our party had to leave to get to the bar and I had to wait for my card and ask him to adjust the check. We waited for so long for him to come back to the table. I was pretty angry. What? Did he think we were leaving him a $200 tip on top of our already $49.00 tip included in the bill? We were then almost 40 minutes late to the bar and I'm now worried $400 has been charged to my credit card. Was this server thinking that he could get $200 off of a group of people a tiny bit tipsy off of some wine? It felt really shady. I can't say that I am going to be going back, even though the food was pretty good. read more

I haven't yelped in ages but a return to what was once my favorite Italian place made me write this review. I was last there in 2009 and it my first thought that it most likely had a new chef or management was the fact it was not at all crowded when we went in and that excellent focaccia they used to serve was gone. I won't even go into how terrible the bread was. The pizza- which used to be some of the best you could find- now is a less flavorful, charred mess of too little sauce and hardly any cheese for $15.00. What was once their excellent quality Sicilian tuna salad, now tastes as if the chef opened a can of Chicken of the Sea tuna fish, slapped on top of some canned red kidney beans - this was once my favorite dish, I was tempted to send it back. I won't even go into the orichette with fatty sausage, too much oil and overcooked mushy broccoli sprigs...that's right broccoli, instead of the more expensive broccoli rabe that should be used in the dish. Take note management that excessively cheapening the quality of every ingredient you use and raising the prices makes people who truly know good food never return. read more

I was excited to try this place close to my apartment. I figured that since it is a good location, and looked nice had a good atmosphere I should try it. The pasta that we ordered was horrible. The pasta was not cooked properly and was way too spicy and barley had any eggplant in it. The pizza we ordered with proccutio was soggy and not tasty. I have never seen a pizza I didn't like until I had pizza here. Will not be returning. read more

I can see where some reviews are negative, maybe that this restaurant would be slightly inconsistent, however our experience could not have been better, from attentive server to delicious Italian comfort food. I would give Gnocco 4.5 stars, but the server bumped it up a notch. The appetizer was Arancini stuffed with peas and other veggies. Delish. We wanted to split a pasta and a pizza dish, so I had the Bufalina (fresh buffalo mozzarella made it incredibly light and tasty; cherry tomatoes, basil) and added prosciutto. The fiancée had the pasta: maccheroni with braised prosciutto and light cream sauce. Pizza exceeded expectations, but only if you like thin crust. Maccheroni was out of this world. If you have a rough week (or day), go there and eat this dish. Very authentic Italian. read more

Beautiful interior. I had my birthday in the back space with a group of 13 people. Luckily despite the reviews about slow service, we immediately got a waitress and were able to order wine and food. It's just that the menu here is sort of a hit or miss. I'd definitely go for the pizza or the seafood dishes, but probably not the pasta (especially do not recommend the whole wheat pasta!). This Alphabet City Italian has changed a lot since we first came here. Now it has seating space facing the street, seating space facing the back, and seating space outside (though covered). One thing has remained unchanged and it's one of the main reasons for coming back - the Gnocco special appetizer - fried pieces of bread served with thin slices of assorted cured meats. It's not kosher, but it's mmmm mmmm good! The menu has some solid traditional Italian dishes, but this is one of the places where going with the nightly specials is a good bet. That's what we did and my boyfriend ended up with the winner of an entree - fillet mignon. My risotto with saffron, shrimp and peas was good, but a touch too salty and too monotonous on the texture front. The other thing that's changed here is the dessert menu - it expanded and it now boasts one chocolate item. In my opinion, it can use some more development. Besides lack of good dessert there are two other reasons why we don't go here more often - it is a long walk to the nearest train station and they don't take credit cards. If the above doesn't bother you and you like Italian cuisine, then this place is a winner. read more

Amazing pizza served here- just as it is served in Italy: a small pie and not a slice. This is a true Italian restaurant and there are many native Italian employees here ( I have spoken to them in Italian only). It is a small place but you can make reservations here. It has a weird and narrow entrance but the inside is nice and dimly lit in the evening, which gives it a romantic ambiance. Definitely worth going to! read more

I'm from California, and was visiting my aunt in New York. She lives in the East Village, and we were looking for a comfortable place to have a good meal. I am happy to say, Gnocco filled those requirments. We walked into the restaurant at 8:00 on a Friday night. Of course, any restaurant is bound to be packed on a Friday night... we didn't have a reservation, but we didn't have to wait for a table, which was nice. It seemed like throughout the night, there was at least one table open, even though the restaurant was packed. We couldn't get a table in the outside garden, which was unfortunate, so we had to sit at an inside table. I was struck by the noise level. So many people were packed into the tiny room, that it was hard for me to hear at the small table. I assume it would have been easier to hear had we been in the outdoor garden. Anyway, the menu had a couple things on it that looked interesting, and the prices seemed to be very reasonable for the portions/quality. The waiter came out with the bread right away. and I have to say, it was DELICIOUS! The crust was to die for, and the bread definitely wasn't filling, so after eating a couple pieces (dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar), I still had room for my salad/entree. The salad came out a few minutes later. I had the arugula/parmassan(is that how you spell it?)/ tomato salad, with a nice balasamic dressing. It definitely was good, the arugula was sooo fresh! But it wasn't anything special. I could have easily made it at home... Then came the pizza, and my aunt and I decided to spilt a margarita pizza. Let me tell you, DO NOT order a whole pizza for yourself, unless you have a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE appetite, or you want left overs. The pizza was amazing, though, and there was just enough for both me and my aunt to be stuffed to the brim after finishing it. The crust was ultra thin, in fact it is the thinest pizza I think I have ever had. It isn't soggy, which is a definite plus, but it was so thin that when I picked up the pizza, my nail pierced through it,... it was much easier to eat with a fork and knife... and that's something that is nice about this place, it is casual enough that you can hold your pizza slice, but fancy enough that you could also cut your pizza with a fork and knife. Anyway, onto the sauce... it tasted so fresh. It was delicious. And the cheese was delicious. You could tell that it was high quality mozerella. It was also garnished with fresh basil (yummy!). The only slight down side to the pizza was that it had a few burnt spots, but nothing to bad. We didn't have to order dessert, we were sooo full (okay, so we grabbed so pasteries on our way home, whatcha gonna do?), But overall, this was a pretty tasty place. Good atmosphere. Good service. It took over 10 minutes for a server to come over and take our drink order, at which point we ordered our full meal since we had read through the menu and decided by then. The food here is just OK. Service was friendly but mixed. It was the SEVERAL large cockroaches I saw walking around which were the worst part of the experience. Food: We ordered the Caprino Tipiedo to start. It is described as goat cheese over bread on a bed of lettuce, with some other ingredients. The plate included plenty of lettuce, enough to call the dish a salad, but the lettuce was very wilted. It was difficult to tell there was any bread under the goat cheese, such a small, little round was it. For our main we ordered a margherita pizza. We were told it would be enough for two people, but it really wasn't. Six small slices. Very thin, but not crispy. Not much sauce, not terribly flavorful. Service: Service was very friendly. We had no trouble getting water when we needed it. After our meal was over no one came to bring us a check. I eventually got the hostess's attention and asked for it. She did not return with it. 10 minutes later I went up to her to ask again for the check. No big deal. I didn't love this place, and do not expect to return. I'd like to give a good review because the people here were friendly, but our experience in terms of food just wasn't all that.
