When I arrived here, it was dinner time and it was empty, so I was a little nervous. But I trusted the positive yelp reviews and had an AMAZING experience! The guy behind the counter seemed like the owner, and he gave great suggestions and was so friendly. I ended up getting the beef bulgogi bento box type thing, which was delicious! But I have to try and make it back for the dish my friends got - it was a BiBimBap bowl with a fried egg on top. He puts your choices of ingredients in this stone bowl, and then puts it over the fire to heat up everything. I was seriously jealous when he set it down in front of them. Awesome little place that is growing. I was a bit worried that such a small place wouldn't be able to sustain itself. The concept is great, and the service is fast and impeccable. This location even had a couple shelves with Korean items for sale. What else could you possibly need? The idea is sort of like a Chipotle- there are a few different items you can get, some include choosing a base and then adding toppings. I got the rolls, beef and spicy pork. These rolls are just six bucks and they totally fill you up. I prefer the spicy pork because it has more flavor and a bit more moisture. I liked it so much, I went again later that night to eat dinner with a friend. We got the boxes, and my my my, were they good. You get a heap of meat, your choice of rice, side dish of kimchi, and dumplings. My fave way to soend my money here. If you chose a dish that needs to have something heated, they'll even bring it out to you. For drinks, theu have th typical sodas and water, and they also have Korean can juices, which are TOTALLY awesome. They even take phone orders. AND they take all major credit cards. In general this place has correctly been described as a fast casual Korean restaurant with a serving style very similar to that of Chipotle or Subway. You pick your ingredients, toss then in a bowl, and voila. I really do like this place, but I feel like it is so uniformly outclassed by J KOGI that my rating had to reflect it. The best feature of Gogi compared to other places is the hot pot option for the food. Basically you can get your meal served in a super hot ceramic bowl. The food not only remains hot during your entire meal, but it also allows the food on the edge of the bowl to gain a kind of crispiness just not seen with other serving methods. However, the overall quality and flavor of the food simply does not hold up to the comparable food at J KOGI. At J KOGI each individual component of the meals are independently seasoned and delicious in their own right. Their synergy when combined together is really a gustatory treat. The Gogi food is good too but the end product quite frankly disappointed me for what it was. So if you are on the west end or interested in trying the hot pot give this place a whirl for above average fast causal at a good price. read more

Wow, I'll admit I was wrong about this place! Any place touting itself as 'asian fusion' warrants a great deal of skepticism from me. But, I was really craving Korean - fusion or not - and decided I'd give this place a shot. Man... so glad I did! I got the bulgogi box which comes with 2 sides and choice of rice. I had the spicy pork with pork dumplings and kimchi as the sides. First off, for only about $10, I definitely expected small portions. That's usually the case anyways. But generous portions! Tasty too. The meat was a little bit dry but the flavor was great! By no means the best Korean I've had, but totally worth the price :) I also tried some of the beef kimbap. Meh, dunno if I would get this myself ever. It's nothing to write home about but if you're extra peck-ish, this would be good to split with someone! I haven't tried the bibimbap here, so I can't speak to that (despite the namesake...). But honestly bibimbap is hard to screw up in my opinion. Not a huge fan of the dish in general, but I might give it a shot next time I'm here. Other stuff worth mentioning: convenient parking thanks to its location in a plaza. I called in my order and just picked up, but it looked like the interior was pretty well-kept and spacious! Also, they take card without a minimum (as far as I'm aware)! Whoa...Korean fast food booming in RVA. Loving what this town is becoming as the food choices start to take on the ever-changing landscape. So, you know when you get so excited about trying something that afterword you rush home to Yelp it? It finally happened again after trying Gogi BiBimBap. I can't put my finger on it, but the taste of that food in that bowl made me want to go back and try everything else they have. I had heard of this place as a southside staple, but finally arriving in the Gold's Gym shopping area of the West End, it was time to take the leap. Let's start first with what it isn't - a noodle shop. It is a rice-based bowl shop that has choices between white, brown and my new favorite starch, purple pearl rice (sort of a cross between white and brown with a more hearty texture than white rice but not as nutty as a brown.) Then you pick five veggies to round out the bowl and a bulgogi (protein) I went with beef, more on that later. I love noodles, but I love even more that this place is not something that everything else is becoming. Now what it is, is an assembly line (yes, much like Chipotle) but the choices of vegetables are more intriguing, and depending on the type of bowl you get (and protein), it will enhance your experience. The veggies range from a pickled zucchini, to sprouts, to carrots and corn. Broccoli and red onion hold up well in any choice you make. Sprouts got a bit mushy when I made the choice I discuss below. Now here is where the meal was made...I got a BiBimBap Dol Sot - the "hot bowl"...not hot spice-wise, but hot as in the bowl itself is stone and heated so that EVERYTHING in your bowl is cooking as you are eating it. The closest experience I can describe this to was eating okonomiyaki off of a working skillet in the middle of my table in Japan. The flavors morph and change as you eat and mix sauces and veggies and a sunny side up egg (yes, get it). Wow is all that I can say. A bit more expensive, and to be warned, a wait of a few minutes as your cold-bowl companions chow down (get 'em all hot or not is what my plan would be). TOTALLY WORTH THE WAIT AND UPCHARGE!! The beef starts and stays tender and I can't quite describe what the heat does to the veggies, egg, and rice, it does NOT burn them though, and you are left with a crispy textured treat toward the end of your meal that made me chip and hack away at the bottom of the bowl until it was gone. Not sure if that was intended, but it tasted too damn good to leave there. Don't ask me to pronounce or translate the names of the protein options (bulgogi?) (all you need to know is beef, pork, chicken, seafood, tofu) or even the BiBimBap name of the shop's main dish. If I say it wrong, or just ask for a hot bowl for the rest of the times I go there, so be it. Just remember to ask me to join you if you ever go here. Some like it hot, and if you want to enjoy the flavor symphony I did, you will too. read more

Like the other reviews say, it is Chipotle-esque, where you can build your own bibimbap bowl...almost like fast casual Korean food, which is so exciting to me! In addition to bibimbap, they also have skillets, dumplings, and kimbap I believe. There were a lot of choices for veggies and it was hard to narrow it down to just 5. I decided to get a dolsot bibimbap (in the sizzling stone bowl) with tofu as my protein and the egg very runny. They heat up the bowl and bring it to you. I really enjoyed my meal with the addition of the extra spicy sauce-it had everything you could want: carbs, lots of veggies, protein, and an egg cooked however you'd like. My favorite part is how some of the rice gets crispy from the hot bowl. It was a big portion for me and I was full for the rest of the day. Service was really fast. WOW! Finally glad to have tried this place after driving past it for a while. For your first time, like me, and are overwhelmed by all the choices, ask for the Beef Bulgogi, hot stone, fried egg, with the traditional vegetables that go with it and they'll do all the work picking the ingredients for you. Cost around $11. Service during a Saturday lunch was great and food came delivered right to the table. The food was absolutely delicious! Great quick lunch choice! I'm actually surprised it took this long for someone to create a place like this. Bibimbap is a great "fast food" option. Prices are very reasonable for size of bowl and portion of food you get. 5 veggies, a protein and an egg, what more could you want? Find it interesting that some have complained about the flavor as you control that yourself with the gochujong at the table-so if it's bland or too hot you can only blame yourself. I had the hot stone ball and choice of brown rice with bean sprout, radish,onion, mushroom and spicy pork plus sunny side up on top. I t was really delish specially when you put the red pepper paste. My experience was beyond amazing! There are only 2 workers: 2 brothers cooking and serving Korean favorites. Think of it as 'chipotle' for korean food because you can choose your veggies, meats and sides then they're cooked by the big brother. My boyfriend and I got a spicy pork and beef bibimbap on a traditional stone pot that crisped up the bottom. There are 3 hot-sauce types and 1 homemade soy-sauce which I loved! I also ordered a shrimp mandoo which are simply gyozas with their homemade soy-sauce, perfecto! The service is impeccable and beyond me, we even chatted with the brothers for about 30 minutes and I didn't mind the company at all. Love this place! I've had a cold pot, hot pot, and kimbap (sushi), and enjoyed them all. The basic premise for the bibimbap is to pick a type of rice (white, brown, purple pearl), 5 vegetables, meat (5-6 options), and type of egg (fried or runny). I'd recommend the hot pot (dol sot) bibimbap over the cold - it comes out piping hot and blends the flavors better. Careful not to burn your mouth though, haha. I've tried bowls with spicy pork, bulgogi beef, and bulgogi chicken. Spicy pork is the best, but it can be pretty hot, so go with the beef if you can't do that. The chicken wasn't bad, it just wasn't as flavorful as the others. Definitely recommend Gogi! It's one of my new go-to's for a quick meal. Hidden away in an unseeming corner of a shopping center on West Broad St, this is such a great, cheap bite for casual weeknights. This is a chipotle style restaurant serving up Bibimbap (hot or regular), tofu soup, japchae and other Korean staples. You order your food upfront and they bring it to you but it's mainly self service. If you choose the Bibimbap, you get your choice of meat as well as five veggies and your style of egg. Getting the hot stone bowl option also means they'll heat it up for you in the oven (approx 5ish minutes). I tried the beef bulgogi with my choice of veggies (broccoli, shitake mushrooms, green scallions, spinach, and onions). It was delicious! Especially for the price you pay (under $10), it was a good serving and a great variety of choices to choose from. I loved the options I have with the veggies that you don't normally get at other Bibimbap places. I loved how casual this was, almost fast food style with higher quality food. We've tried this place a few times thinking it's got to be that we've hit a bad day - there are so many great reviews - but the food is just never good. I hate the flavor and texture of the rices (but I love rice!). The toppings always seem limp or overcooked (or both). The sauces are good, but it's not enough to save the meal.
