I was craving for Korean food last night and ChoDong and BanChan were closed on Tuesday so this is the next closest restaurant that was opened. We arrived around 6:00 pm and there were 3 tables. It smelled really good with grilled meat coming from the kitchen and that was a good sign! We were seated right away! They went out of Hite beer so I tried the Cass. Very light. Next we ordered and waited. The place started filling up and by the time we got our food we didn't see our waiter again. Looked like they were under staffed and with 2 people taking care of 15 + tables you are not going to get much service. When I entered the restaurant, Korean music videos were playing on the three tvs. The waitress greeted me and asked me to wait until she cleared a table. Then, she motioned for me to come over to the table once it was cleaned. The restaurant was busy and it took a little while for me to give my order to the waiter. They were so busy they didn't get a chance to check on me or ask if I wanted more of the banchan. I ordered the beef tofu soup and the bulgogi. The meat was good quality where it wasn't chewy or stringy. The soup lacked a bit of flavor, but it was decent nonetheless. I had ordered spicy and it was the right level for me. The side dishes included fish cakes, kimchee, fermented radish strips, pickled squash, and pickled kimchee cucumbers. The bulgogi had a sweet sauce on it. I was surprised because I am more used to savory sauces on the bulgogi. The amount of food looked a bit small for the price, based on other Korean restaurants that I have been to. TOO LEGIT TO QUIT. My husband and I haven't been this happy in a long time from a restaurant and especially Korean! We were on a road trip and decided to stop in Chandler for some Korean fried chicken. Just WOW. Absolutely delicious food, I wish I had taken pictures because the portions were huge. My bimbimbap was GIGANTIC and can easily feed 2. I love that the stone pot was shallow so you get more space for crispy rice on the bottom. It was delicious! Mmmm Korean food..... Decided on having lunch here after seeing that they had cold noodle soup! We arrived at 11:30am and people were slowly starting to trickle in. We were quickly seated in a booth and the waitress brought us the menus and some water. The water was great and it did not take like tap water. The menu was pretty big and had a wide selection of Korean foods. They do have a lunch special and I opted on getting the galbi with steamed white rice. The lunch special also came with the traditional side dishes. (Kimchi, cucumber) We also ordered an extra steamed egg, some cold noodle soup, and a steamed egg. The steamed egg was DEEELICIOUS. The hot pot was filled to the brim and the egg tasted so good and it was so fluffy. The cold noodle soup wasn't cold enough and it was way to sweet. The sauce they put in it was too strong. The portion was big though, and it can easily be shared within two people. Our server was running around like crazy but she still managed to check up on us a few times. I believe it was only two employees tending tables and it was starting to get really busy for the lunch hour. We never got the side of white rice that we had ordered, but when we got our bill, they were still charging us for it. We flagged down the server that had brought over the check, and he nicely said he would take it off, thank you. My food was great and the meat had so much flavor! Short Review: Good food followed by decent service. If you are into Korean cuisine, GOGI is one to try if you haven't already. The inside feels a lot like a Korean diner. It is spacious and bright, but warm ambient. My only concern is the price vs quantity here. Quite honestly, it has happen often. Korean restaurant tends to price their dishes very expensive, but they do offer the fair and appropriate amount of quantity that matches the price. My problem is, why couldn't they do a more low quantity at a low price? For more details, read below. Long Review: GOGI is located in the center of Chandler of Arizona. It is also next to my favorite dessert shop, Snowtime. GOGI specialized in Korean dishes, but they also have a few Japanese dishes here. For the most part, you won't have any parking problems because it is in a food area. On the outside, the shop sign is capitalized in bold red. There is much on the outside other than the tall arch way. On the inside, it looks more of an Asian diner. It is spacious, clean, and organized. The lighting makes it feels "classy", but of course, it's just a casual Korean restaurant. On the menus, there are quite a lot of options including sushi. When it comes down to it, I got the Soon Tofu Combo (Hot Stone Bibimbap) and KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) Sweet & Spicy. It took about 8 - 12 minutes for all of my dishes to come out. Soon Tofu Combo (Hot Stone Bibimbap): This was a combo that goes with the tofu soup. I got the mushroom soup. For the bibimbap, honestly, I thought they would give me a choice of meat. In the end, I got a vegetables bibimbap. For those that doesn't know what is a bibimbap, it is a Korean dish that consisted of mixed various ingredients (mostly vegetables) and rice on the bottom with choice of meat like pork/beef/chicken. It also usually followed by saucing on top of bibimbap with gochujang sauce, et cetera. Other than that, it's really nothing special, especially for Asian people who experience these types of food almost on a daily. For people who are new to these types of dish, it is full of flavor without a single plain taste. KFC Sweet & Spicy Ver.: Think of it like Popeyes or Kentucky Fried Chicken, but with their style of batter and seasoning. And that's the end results. So, if you like fried chicken, odds are you'll like these Korean fried chicken as well. On the menu, they had a couple of KFC, but they recommend me the sweet and spicy for my first time. I have tried Korean Fried Chicken elsewhere before, and sadly, here was just okay. My problem with it was the dryness. The bigger pieces was more juicier, while the smaller and medium pieces are dryer. However, the flavor was excellent. The crispiness was also good. It was just kind of overcooked. Service was fine, but I wish they could have told me and give me the option of having meat with the Bibimbap combo I got. In conclusion, I rate the Bibimbap Combo/KFC Sweet & Spicy in quantity, a B+/-A and in quality a B+/B. My only problem in quantity is that they should make a half portion for the KFC with half of the price, of course. For instance, it was $17.99 for the WHOLE KFC. They should make a HALF KFC for $8.99 because the portion was way too much for a single person, especially for dining. Same goes to Bibimbap. For some reason, Korean restaurant tends to have this tendency of having too much of everything. As for quality, the bibimbap was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. For the KFC quality, it would have been better if they didn't overcook it. So, do I recommend eating here? Sure, but there are a whole lot of option out there. So, don't just settle for one. I've eaten here over the course of the past six years and have always enjoyed eating their Seolleongtang - ox bone soup. It is my go to meal for when the weather is cloudy, I need a pick me up or I just want some soup! I think this is one of the better Korean food spots in AZ, that isn't KOREAN BBQ! Good variety of dishes ranging from noodles, tofu soup, bimbimbap, and even K-fried chicken. What separates Korean joints in my mind is the banchan. While other diners push it aside after tasting, I consider it part of my meal and K-pop it all in my mouth! This visit Gogi had the common banchan side dishes- potato, bean sprouts, Kimchi, radish, fish cakes, but I thought they tasted pretty good and fresh. BIMBIMBAP- pretty good. I felt it was lacking in the rice portion, thus the toppings overwhelmed the rice. Also, the gochujang sauce could have used a little more pizzaz. Or needed salt added to the ingredients. The dish just tasted a little under-seasoned. JAPCHAE- the flavor alone, on point. Not too much sesame oil which a lot of places tend to do and it becomes too oily. Here, it was balanced in flavor. Now for the overall rating of the japchae... It came with mixed greens on the plate with it. Kinda out of place and weird because it did not have any kind of dressing on it. It was just plain. The 'salad' could have been on a separate dish or left off all together. It was getting in the way of the noodles! I think this salad on the plate was just a filler as an illusion to make you feel like you are getting a BIG portion. The only thing big about it was that it was a BIG mistake to put it on there. Lesson to the business owners; Don't take your customers for fools. At $18 I felt this is too pricey! Yeah it had a little bulgogi in it, but the cost of noodles are inexpensive and should not warrant $18. Anytime I pay over $15 for noodles I'm getting hosed by the restaurant. We ordered the Spicy Pork Hot Stone Bibimbap and the 1/2 Sweet & Spicy fried chicken & the other 1/2 Soy Sauce Fried Chicken. The Hot Stone Bibimbap was very good. The Bibimbap looks humungous being served in a large stone bowl but it's mainly a one person dish. We shared the Bibimbap & had to order more rice because it wasn't enough to fill two people.
