Solid local style Chinese food. Got the dinner plate and it was soooo good. - Sweet sour ribs had lots of meat and nice tangy sauce - cold ginger chicken. We were ono for Chinese specifically a place with good cake noodles. Heard that golden Duck was the place for it. Ordered the minute chicken cake noodle, fried rice, ong choy, sweet and sour chicken, Kung pao chicken, and chicken chow mein. Now I'm not usually picky about my noodles but they were so soft to begin with not a crunchy side to find before the sauce even went on. By the time I poured the sauce all texture disappeared and it became a soft square noodle dish. I expect this might be more appealing to those older patrons. Second issue with the cake noodle was the lack of flavor. It may have been the sauce but it was all just bland I had to eat it with hot mustard sauce to pep it up. Surprisingly, the fried rice had great flavor along with the sweet and sour chicken. Sweet and sour had a good breading to chicken ratio and the flavor was sweet, tangy, abs so flavorful. The ong choy could use more garlic and salt. Now the star of the show and very deceiving was the Kung pao chicken. I opened it up and went wow that looks so bland. But it was the most flavorful dish out of the order. I wasn't happy about the chow mein because I was hoping for that dried and fried and I thought we ordered another cake noodle dish but they put the sauce on it for us. Again a miss for flavor. I was very surprised at how this order turned out because the things I wanted and are used to getting tasted bland. And all the up in the air orders we thought could be a fail turned out to be pretty awesome. Now we know what to order from here. read more

My Uncle wanted to eat Chinese food so we decided to go here since he was staying In Waikīkī. Wē made perfect timing because I got a Parking right by the front door. Wē found a table close to the door and the waiter brought the menus and hot tea, water, and our utensils and napkins. It wasn't that crowded when we arrived, but soon after we ordered our food it got crowded. Alot of people were ordering take-out and it started to get crowded In the Restaurant . Soon the Restaurant was packed with people For both Dine In and take-out. I recommended this place to my Uncle since it was located In Mc Cully close to my Uncle's hotel. My Uncle and I ordered The Golden Duck Special Dinner Plate. My Mom ordered the Dinner plate. My Uncle was craving crispy gau gee so we ordered an order of that. The crispy gau gee came first, then our plates of food arrived. Everything was very delicious and Everyone enjoyed their Dinner. My Mom was amazed and said "Wow ! Overall this experience was probably between a 3.5 and a 4. - Pork with sugar snap peas was good. - Soft Gau Gee Mein was a bit mushy and the noodles were stuck together. Maybe they were packed extra hot and stuffed tight into the container? - Boneless minute chicken was battered and deep fried. A lot of other places don't put so much batter. Is it just me, or has the taste of The food here gone downhill? Just almost tasteless. Did the chef here quit? Today I ordered the Beef Broccoli, bland bland bland. I had to recook it with oyster sauce. Next was the Shrimp Canton, the kids wanted. As always, I understand. Can't hardly find the shrimp. It's 90% batter! Lastly was the Salt Pepper Pork Chops, it was take out and for everything to fit in the small container all the pieces were small. Lots of garlic and onions. But again no flavor. 3 dishes for $42, and I had 1/2 left over with the 3 of us. I guess it wasn't worth the seconds. I didn't leave a good review last month either. My friend and I went for lunch today. I haven't been there since before their green placard was revoked the other year. Since they have been reopened for awhile with a green placard we went to see how their food is. I ordered a won ton fun in soup and my friend ordered a wor won ton fun in soup. After several bites, I found a baby cockroach in my noodles. I called a woman over rather than our waiter who sat us as he had no personality. She apologized and offered me another order, but I had lost my appetite. She offered me a dish to take home and I again declined. She subsequently gave me two pieces of rice cake to take home and then comped my friend's lunch, too. That was nice of her, but I really don't think I'll be going back here. Okay so we brought in 3 lbs of XL king crab and paid them to make it black bean style for us for pick up at 430 on xmas day. For some reason the pan we got in no way was 3 lbs of crab and it sure wasn't the XL king crab we brought. The peices we much smaller and no way it was 3 lbs. Terrible. We have been a royal customers of this restaurant for many years when we visited Honolulu every year. During our stayed, we would have gone to Golden Duck for lunch or dinner at least 2-3 times. Unfortunately, this time we went, the food portion was smaller, the prices went up and they also charged us $1.50 for tea maybe? Not sure. Plus they charged us something else for $3+ on top of the tax. I am not sure what that $3 was for, but didn't want to bother to ask. We paid with a credit card and without being informed, they charged us additional 3% on the total bill. I don't think we will go back to Golden Duck again. The most, we will only do takeouts of their dinner plate with cash. What a shame! The owner really put a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know if it is because we weren't locals. Still, what a disappointment. We ordered 4 dishes and it was almost $90 dollars. Kinda expensive for Chinese food. This restaurant is no longer our favorite Chinese restaurant in Honolulu. Will find a new spot next time when we are here. read more

Soooo one of my dilemmas/frustrations since moving to Hawaii has been trying to find good Chinese food. Now many of you might be thinking "is he kidding?", there's probably 10,000 Chinese restaurants on Oahu and many that are excellent, and you're right. Let my clarify, I'm from NY and I'm used to "NY" Chinese which for some reason doesn't translate to "HI" Chinese? Bolognaise is Bolognaise, a California roll is a California roll, etc etc etc however for some reason when it comes to Chinese apparently the terms and execution are somewhat muddy. My #1 frustration is in NY when you order Egg Foo Young it ALWAYS comes with brown gravy, always. Here the Egg Foo Young comes with no gravy and if you ask you get weird or angry faces and are told "you don't put gravy on Egg Foo Young"! What's even stranger to me is the gravy they put on EGY in NY if the friggin Loco moco gravy they serve EVERYWHERE BUT Chinese restaurants! (A few kind owners have offers to put black bean sauce on for me but that ain't it). Now at this point you're probably expecting me to say "but wait! I found a place that serves EFY with brown gravy" but you'd be wrong as I did not. That is however what attracted me to Golden Duck because on their menu they have EFY with a note that says "add gravy $1" so I was excited. Problem is when I got there I asked the waiter what kind of gravy do you put on the EFY and he responded "it's a black bean sauce but you really don't put gravy or any sauce on EFY" (grrrrrr!). But! I actually came prepared! You see my second favorite NY Chinese dish is shrimp with lobster sauce. Unfortunately that item does not appear on Golden Duck's menu. The good news is the fine folks on Yelp often post pictures of their food. While perusing the pics from Golden Duck I came upon a dish called "shrimp w/soft egg chow fun" which looked a hell of a lot like shrimp in lobster sauce (aka shrimp cantonese. Which btw looks nothing like the shrimp canton Golden Duck serves)! I ordered that and call it whatever the heck you want but it was fantastic! As was the char sui fried rice (aka NY roast pork fried rice) so I was a happy guy! Moral of the story is if you're a wayward NYer jonesing for some shrimp in lobster sauce with roast pork fried rice this is the place for you (provided you know the code! ) On a closing note, if I'm wrong and someone knows a Chinese restaurant that serves EFY WITH Loco moco style brown gravy PLEASE message me! I'll be forever in your debt! read more

We were invited for a New Year's Day lunch with clients. This has been a favorite spot of theirs for decades! The customer service was awesome. All the food came out exactly when and how our hostess asked. Honestly, I was not impressed by the food. The place is obviously a community favorite though. A steady stream of customers came in for pickup and was sent out quickly with happy faces. There was even a birthday celebration same day. Ambience is chill and on the quiet side. We had the charsiu spare ribs which is charsiu with bones in it. Flavor was good but why spare ribs? Cake noodles were real mushy, honey walnut shrimp might not have been mixed well enough cause it was a little too Mayonnaise-y for me. Lap cheong with snow peas (or some other peas???) was ono. Not too salty or oily. Overall, the food was just ok. I think this place might appear to a more mature crowd. Minimal noise and not too much salt in the food. No pictures of the food to avoid insulting our hostess! read more

I called to ask if they would be option Christmas for a 9:15-3:30am pickup and the answer was yes. So I ordered Crispy Gau Gee mein with cake noodles for $86. On Christmas 9:15, the door to the restaurant was locked, the lights off and no response. Arghhh. The sign said 10:30am . This is NOT a good thing when the brunch is SUPPOSED to start at 10am. Hummm. Go back at 10:30 to pickup for lunch instead of brunch, eh? The noodles were the worst we had ever had. Noodles were clumped together and vegetables were overcooked. Not a good thing when half the group traveled from the mainland . We decided to NEVER return to this place again. Overpriced for beyond poor Chinese food. Stay away. They were just not up to snuff for our Christmas brunch. Just reinforced my belief to NOT go out to a restaurant on a holiday because of crowds compounded by poor service. This is the place I was looking for for decades. The mom and Pop place that has the classic local Chinese specialties that local people love. But the staff and the people who cook the food also put in a lot of care to make it very authentically Chinese. The inside is also clean and there is parking in the back.the amount is very generous and I was able to take the leftovers and eat it for two more meals. It is obvious from the restaurant's exterior that it has seen better days. At least most should know what they are in for before stepping inside, and to lower their expectations on the quality of food that is sold here. When I walked in, no one told me where to sit, so I chose my own booth and sat there for someone to give me a menu. The waitress was fairly nice and brought me both water and hot tea. I came to this restaurant because I did not want to judge a book by its cover. But to be on the safe side, I thought it would be best to order simple dishes that would be difficult to mess up, even for a mediocre neighborhood Chinese restaurant. I ordered the Shrimp Egg Foo Young ($12.95) and Lup Cheong Fried Rice, which isn't listed on the menu, but costs $11.95. I've had much better food at Chinese takeout restaurants in inner cities on the mainland. The food is simply not good, which is a shame, because there is no excuse not to learn how to perfect simple fried dishes that would be the most popular at any Chinese American restaurant. I'm not sure if the cook here knows how to properly use a wok for frying and stir frying, but both the Lup Cheong Fried Rice and the Shrimp Egg Foo Young should have been fried longer. My mother can cook much better fried rice that is more flavorful. The fried rice lacked flavor and only had a small amount of lup cheong and peas in proportion to the rice. This restaurant would probably bring in more customers with a few small changes, starting with adding a bit more seasoning, spices, and ingredients like garlic and ginger in its dishes. The portion size for the egg foo young was average considering that it does not come with anything else such as rice. The fried rice was plentiful enough that I took most of it home. However, the following day the fried rice had an odd smell, as if the egg or lup cheong had not been fresh in the first place, so I threw it out. If you're thinking about eating at this restaurant, ask yourself why eat here when there are much better restaurants within a one mile radius. 8 Fat Fat 8 Bar & Grille is only several blocks away, and the Chinese food there is excellent. read more
