The flavor was missing and I'm not sure if it was done for health reasons but the next time I stop by I will bring up that question. Had lunch from here delivered today, via BiteSquad. I was craving cake noodle and this was the first place on the list for Chinese food. The take out portion was pretty big but not uncommon for Chinese take out. It wasn't anything spectacular, just simple Oyster Sauce Chicken Cake Noodle. The taste however was a bit bland and the sauce was lukewarm. I didn't complain though because I had it delivered so I didn't expect it to be piping hot at all. The plate was a little messy but again, it was delivered so I didn't complain. Aside from all of this, I have a feeling they use MSG. I'm not exactly a fan of it because I get a headache from it so I try to stay away from places that use it. I'm not one of those people who complain about things like MSG or Gluten or anything but they must use a lot because just after a few bites I got a massive headache and didn't want to eat more. The King Street location of the Golden Duck offers the same flavorful Chinese meals as its Kahala location, although the ambiance is quite different. The King Street restaurant has more of a chop suey house feel to it. The family gathered there for dinner one evening before the New Year, anchoring down one corner with a huge round table for 10. Needless to say, it was quite a feast. One thing about ordering Chinese food family style ... the food keeps coming, and there's always going to be a lot leftover for someone to take home. The Golden Duck experience was no different. We had lots of food. They offer (and we had) all the familiar favorites. But then, I wasn't in charge of the dinner and I didn't do the ordering. In fact, when it comes to Chinese food, I'd rather somebody else do the ordering. I've been here three times for lunch with friends and they always order the same thing! Sweet and sour fish, garlic broccoli, shrimp fried rice, and black mushroom tofu with choy sum. The most rude/racist service I have experienced in all my life. As soon as we walked in, we got a feeling we weren't welcome. Turns out, we were right. There's something about the way Chinese restaurants name their establishments and when I repeat it in my head, there's a twang to it that makes it sound so delicious. I've always known Golden Duck existed across from Zippys on S. King St. The only reason I've never really visited is because I never wanted to go by myself. A girlfriend stated she's always picked up take-out here after work, plus it was Chinese New Years and Chinese food would be ideal for today's lunch. I was worried they'd be busy on the very day of Chinese New Years and walking here was a smart move. The locale didn't seem busy upon our arrival; however, parking is nearly full on the back of the building. The inside décor is simple with plenty of booths to incubate on. Service was prompt and neither friendly nor rude, it's traditional Chinese service. We were greeted and seated at the nearest exit. Our view of S. King St. was quite the affordable panorama. Porcelain Lucky Cats and fresh fruits are displayed along with daily specials and other items in sheet protectors worth glancing along at the back of their encyclopedia (their menu). The staff gave the notion of a hustle and bustle as they walked rapidly from aisle to aisle, bringing multiple plates of sizable portions. Waters and a tea cup filled with jasmine tea were immediately placed on our table. A menu of overwhelming options with traditional appetizers from Char Siu, squid, gau gee, fried items (tofu, fresh oyster) and etc. ($8.50-$14.95). The soup options are plenty with a few to name, Chicken Cream Corn, Scallop, egg blossom, hot & sour, rainbow tofu and etc. ($9.95-$15.95). Sizzling platters were tempting to get along with a long list of Seafood dishes priced seasonally or a set price from $11.95-15.95. Separate categories of casseroles, pork or beef, Chop Suey, and fowls (a mixture of miscellaneous dishes of all sorts), egg, vegetarian, rice soup, noodle dishes ranging from $6.25-$29.95. After seeing all the compilations, I began to ignore the menu and chose a photo from my handy Yelp app and said "I want to order this one!" It turns out my selection is from the Noodle with Soup section called Shrimp with soft Egg Chow Fun glazed in gravy. I'm a huge fan of dishes with gravy and soup and this dish was eye catching until I started consuming it. I probably should have stuck to my original plan of getting the Tenderloin Beef with twin mushrooms which by the way is served on a sizzling platter. My shrimp with egg was rather dull on an overcast day which was a total disappointment. My girlfriend ordered the Roast Duck with Char Siu on fried rice and hers was pure tasty. Golden Duck is your typical family style Chinese restaurant. It's not the cleanest place or has the best ambiance. But the food is good and the service is decent enough. This place has been around for as long as I can remember and is really convenient, as it's the closest Chinese restaurant to my house. Whenever I'm craving Chinese food, this is where I go. This restaurant is senior citizen central. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes me wonder why no one under 55 comes in and if I'm weird at 21 for eating here. I always get the Minute Chicken Cake Noodle or the Seafood Crispy Noodle--they never disappoint. The chicken is crispy fried and flavorful and the cake noodle is superb here--crunchy exterior, chewy interior, with just the right amount of gravy. I was on a company trip and my partner and I decided to have dinner at the Golden Duck. We're both vegetarians and chinese food usually has a lot of options for us so we were looking forward to a nice meal. Unfortunately it was quite the opposite. It's pretty dirty inside and all the guys who worked there seemed to be college kids and were not helpful in the slightest. When we mentioned that we were vegetarian they all smirked and laughed. And after we ordered, it was obvious they were talking about us, the way they'd whisper to each other and then glance towards our table (no one else was sitting near us) and giggle. Our food came our quickly. I tried one bite of mine and slid it across the table, it was absolutely awful. And I'm not picky: if it's veg I'll eat it. Not this! My partner ordered garlic broccoli (a daily special) and it was yummy, until we found a big piece of beef hiding in the center underneath the broccoli. Anyway, if you need a great casual chinese restaurant or need some takeout, Golden Duck is a great place to stop by. Good quality food, reasonable prices, and great location make it a place I go to! If its just one or two of you, try their lunch or dinner plates which offer a good assortment at a pretty reasonable price. The location is pretty convenient right off King Street near Piikoi. The BF was always reluctant to try out this place because the name seemed so cliche and it just doesn't look too appealing from the outside. We had a small sample of the dish and the BF and I were a bit incredulous when we heard it was from Golden Duck because it was actually pretty tasty. So, last night I suggested we try out this place since it was close by and he surprisingly agreed. (I think he just wanted to avoid the tantrum that was about to occur because I was not feeling too bueno and I was hungry... smart guy). We ordered shrimp won ton mein, beef with broccolli, minute chicken, and fried rice... all of which were tasty and delicious. I know the BF was pretty happy because he practically inhaled the shrimp won ton mein and he was more than happy to pack the leftovers for lunch the next day. So definitely give this place a shot despite it's lackluster exterior and cliched restaurant name because it actually serves pretty decent Chinese food.
