My roommate and I discovered this place during the crazy snowstorm last winter that had the city shut down for days. We were out exploring, smelled Chinese food, and we found Golden House! Went inside and were pleasantly surprised by their extensive vegan menu (mock meat too) all served with brown rice. I always get food to go because the atmosphere of the restaurant leaves something to be desired, but the food is great. I used to live close by and always took advantage of their free delivery service, the food always arrived hot. My recommendation: vegetarian curry chicken and vegetable spring rolls. Amazing! I've been getting delivery and eating in this restaurant for a few years. Overall I was satisfied with it, and even recommended it as a delivery option for a while. But on a recent visit there was no soap in the bathroom when I went to wash my hands. The restaurant staff seemed surprised I would want soap to wash my hands and brought me a grimy bottle of dish soap that looked like it had been sitting around on a shelf for a few years. The bathroom and restaurant also increasingly have a grimy appearance, a fact I've ignored in the past but this time it got to me. After taking all this in and seeing other reviews (including a roach found in a recent delivery order) I'm thinking I might be done with Golden House. read more

Having sampled most of the Chinese delivery places after moving to downtown Silver Spring a year ago.....I have to say that Golden House has become one of our more consistent and reliable go-tos for delivery. Their service is lightning fast and this is despite them being farther down Georgia Ave than other restaurants I have ordered from. We have sampled a good deal of the menu and everything has always arrived hot & fresh & delivery man actually pays attention to any special notes you put about delivery to your building. (i.e. we have our own private entrance) As in every chinese restaurant, some dishes are a hit.....and some are miss (some dishes with 'crab' had fake crab) but as long as the basics are good, you will be more satisfied than not. They have the best steamed pork dumplings of all the places we have sampled, and their Egg Drop & Wonton Soups are flavorful with good consistency & Flavor. Their Lo Meins are flavorful with plenty of meat/seafood and taste just as good the next day. The Kung Paos have been flavorful but Spicy is mild to me (as per the average American flavor palette). They have great vegetarian dishes and their combo plates have generous portions. Highly recommend the Spare Rib Combo if you want to save some money as you get generous amount of Ribs, Pork Fried Rice, and a Spring Roll for less than ordering all three of those items (which everyone needs when ordering Chinese imo). Not as Gloriously Bad as It Used to be! Since the converted Little Tavern that Golden House had occupied for years was torn down- they've moved to 8200 Georgia Ave. and they haven't had time to collect years of grease on the equipment and windows. The floor isn't as dirty as it used to be either. Unfortunately the Shrimp Toast (which is the only thing I order there) isn't as good either. Sigh. now has seating. I marked good for kids- just to let you know- I hate kids in restaurants- My only hope is that the essentials of Golden House remain- and the little beggers get sick. read more

We've ordered from here twice and been happy. Quick delivery (site says 45-60 minutes but we got it in 30 at 5:00 on a Saturday). Egg rolls were good--although maybe vegetarian? they don't specify--as was the won ton soup. We tried Szechuan chicken, General Tso's, and Kung pao shrimp. My 5-year-old son actually ate the broccoli out of the General Tso's, so I'd call that a win. Would have liked a little more rice with the entrees, and a little less celery/water chestnuts in the shrimp. Otherwise, good and affordable, and I like the convenience of being able to order online. read more

I love this restaurant! I've been out of the country for a couple of years. I have been craving Chinese for a long time. Second day I've been in the US and I google delivery Chinese food. GH turned out to be the first on the list and all I had to do was make an online order. I watched a TV show and 30 minutes go by and they called me up to tell me that they were in the lobby of my apartment building! Everything I ordered was beautifully cooked. I ordered for my siblings and myself. Crunchy Crispy Beef, Sesame Chicken, Orange Chicken, Chicken Pad Thai, Crab Rangoon, Spring Rolls and Wanton Soup. First experience was very odd, hence only 3 starts. I ordered this for delivery and when the food arrvived, the delivery guy was very concerned about my washing machine? He was looking in my apartment and saying something about my stackable washer and dryer. However, I couldn't understand what he was saying becasue he was mumbling. I still have no idea what he was talking about. I have since ordered from here (with the same delivery guy) and there hasn't been a problem. General Tso's is solid. You can select the level of spice you would like which is always a nice option for those who can't handle too much. Medium spice just has a slight kick to keep you coming back for more. The dumplings aren't great, but maybe I'll try the friend next time versus the steamed. It seems as though the dumpling wasn't cooked all the way through. The crab ragoon has actually crab and isn't just loaded with cream cheese and I loved their eggroll. Will probably order from them soon. read more

Ordered delivery from here for the first time yesterday. I usually opt for Mayflower but we wanted to try some "vegan" options Golden House offered that other Chinese restaurants don't. First off, the fastest delivery I've ever experienced. I got the email receipt at 6:05 PM and they were here before 6:30 PM. Granted, they are less than a mile away (0.7 according to the web site, when you place the order), but most delivery places around here are less than a mile or so away and you can expect it to take closer to an hour or slightly longer. Having delivery in less than a half hour is unheard of. Amazing! Veggie steamed dumplings were the best I've ever had. I may just order 20 of these next time, with the intentions of having leftovers for a 2nd (possibly 3rd) meal. Rice Noodle / Veggie Lo Mein was great. Better than regular Lo Mein. Onion Rings were tasty -- comparable to Burger King, so nothing special, but they were a solid, munchie snack. read more

My household has a favorite go-to place for Chinese delivery but decided to let go for a change and try something new. We decided to go with this place based on the reviews on Yelp. It was a Wednesday night and we needed to order something quick and weren't able to pick up fpod. I had the flu and could barely move. At least my taste buds were still intact. My partner was going to be home a little late and delivery was our only option. So I thought, Chinese.... I could get soup! We ordered shrimp with broccoli and a large wonton soup to share. I ordered on the phone. They were friendly and easy to work with. I was impressed with their vegetarian/vegan menu and if I wasn't sick probably would have ordered something from this menu. But I really just wanted soup and to sample whatever my partner was ordering. The food arrived fairly quick. And the food was still piping hot. The wonton soup was pretty good. Probably one of the better soups I have had, but the broth itself was a tad bland. The shrimp and broccoli wasn't bad but not the best. Smothered in too much sauce and the shrimp wasn't de-veined which urks me. Regardless, I rated the overall food experience 3. Not the best, not the worst. Service was good. Prices were good. Just bad food. I genuinely love crappy Americanized Chinese food, but Golden House is a bridge too far. The food just feels gross, like the cooks took the bare minimum to product something to put on a plate. The General Tso's chicken was just sloppy and chewy. I work in the same complex as this place and typically eat there 1 or 2 times a week. You would think a business would appreciate loyal customers but this is not the case. The cashier is never at the register and takes her slow time getting there when someone is waiting. Also the customer service is terrible. There is never a thank you and if you say it first she will not respond. And prepare to receive an attitude if you ask for additional sauce. I will never give my business to this place again. Ordered from Golden House yesterday hoping for decent, if not amazing food. Ordered the boneless ribs, general tsos chicken and beef chow mein. I give them 2 stars for the extremely prompt delivery of piping hot food and large servings. After that there is nothing good. The general tsos chicken was nearly unflavored, with a very chewy crust and rubbery chicken inside. The boneless ribs were dry and uber-rubbery. And the chow mein was a wet mess of rubbery beef and no (zilch) flavor. Common theme is the overcooked protein and poor spice profile. Won't be ordering from them, unless I am starving and I have no other options. Do NOT recommend. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I've been ordering Chinese food from this place for years. I used to go to Oriental East down on East West Highway and Colesville but I needed a place that delivered to me and plus - Oriental East has deteriorated. Once I tried their food here, I LOVED IT. Granted I only ever eat Chicken and Broccoli, occasionally Fried Rice.... but their dumplings are amazing! They are actual fluffy thick dumplings! Every other place's dumplings are too thin. Try the steamed pork dumplings, you WILL NOT regret it! The only thing I'm not really a fan of here is their Lo Mein. That's where Oriental East beats them. Another thing is, if you go in to the actual restaurant, it does LOOK grimey. I can't verify that it is or not.... it just looks like it. But the food is good and I'm still alive so worth it!! I just moved to California, and you'd think I'd find something better out here.... Well I haven't. yet. But when I come back to visit, I'm going to Golden House!! read more

While the menu is very large the food is as best mediocre. We have ordered from here on multiple occasions due to the lack of places still open to eat when we get home from work. Unfortunately each time we are just as disappointed. The pork fried rice is very bland and has practically no ingredients in it and the dumplings are extremely thick in dough. Just got my first delivery order, and I'm a fan. It was delivered impossibly fast; ordered on grubhub and the driver buzzed my door LESS than 20 minutes later. They have an impressive assortment of vegetarian dishes -- I got the orange vegetarian chicken and it was quite good. I liked that it came with brown rice too. The "vegetarian roll" was just alright - not the best spring roll around, but not terrible. Fine to push the order over delivery minimum when ordering for one. UGH!!!!!! Diarrhea at midnight. The beef and broc was swimming in a deep pool of oil. I tried to tell myself it was soysauce... My stomach assures me it was oil. The chow fun was wads of overinflated mush, not resembling noodles. Green beans were bland and greasy but passable. Where's the healthy in any of this???????? Not consistent with the other reviews. I've had good Chinese food and I've had bad Chinese food, but this is the first time I've ever had inedible Chinese food. This went into the trash minutes after making the ungodly mistake of taking the plastic lids off the moderately sized portions of 'food'. The General Tso's Chicken was extremely misrepresented on the menu, likely breaking at least 7 of the 10 commandments. In the extremely rare instances that there was actually meat between the flavorless and artificial mush-like breading, the 'meat' was either translucent or shades of unhealthy looking greys and blacks, indicating that no chicken was actually used in this dish. Even the sauce tasted like rotted orange juice thickened with corn starch. Similarly, the Teriyaki Chicken was nothing more than salted strips of chicken fat and skin. I assume here that they needed to use actual chicken since there is not coating of mush to hide it in, so they simply use the parts of the animal that most average individuals would carve off and toss in the trash. I would have taken pictures of these dishes, but I was worried that if I left the cover off for even another minute that it would mutate into some sort of creature that would wreak havok upon my apartment. Needless to say, I will not be wasting my money here again. The Good: The fried rice alone was edible, on par with what you would expect to be served in a hospital cafeteria - a free government run hospital - in an extremely underdeveloped third world country. Also, the delivery arrived in only about 20 minutes, I assume because the delivery man drives around with pre-made food rotting in the trunk along with the decomposing corpses of taste, flavor, and hygiene. read more

I'm giving it four stars, but at the same time I've found that this is the best Chinese food in Silver Spring - so on a SS-area scale, it's five stars. They have an extensive menu will all the Chinese-American favorites, plus some 'healthy' interpretations. (Note: if you get the 'healthy white meat' General Tso's it will _not_ be fried - it will be steamed chicken with Tso's sauce on the side - you've been warned!) I've really enjoyed the moo shu chicken/pork a few times and my experiences with other dishes have ranged from decent to great. STOP PLEASE READ! DEAD CATERPILLAR This may seem insane to read but it is 100% truth. My bf and I bought a bunch of random food and settled in to watch The Martian. We made little plates from our food, watched and went to bed. We decided on leftovers the next day and as I was spooning out food from a dish I found a FULLY GROWN CATERPILLAR curled up dead in my food! How did this happen? I am so down with this restaurant. I'm a vegetarian and there are TONS of options. The faux chicken is great. If you've ever had the nuggets from the pre-prepared area of Whole Foods it's the same type. There was no oil overload and the flavor was great. I have only ever ordered delivery through GrubHub and have not been into the actual restaurant. Just awful. We've ordered here before and thought it was ok, but our most recent order was a parade of horribles. We ordered two meals and an appetizer. The chicken dish from their "healthy menu" consisted of flat rubbery white sheets that weren't even recognizable as chicken. We received white rice instead of the brown rice we expected, per their menu. And the worst part was the appetizer and other main dish both included chicken, when we clearly ordered vegetarian dishes. Total dealbreaker for the vegetarian with us. To the restaurant's credit, they acknowledged the mistake when we called and resent the delivery guy with a new main dish (no sauce though) - but never apologized or sounded remotely sorry about the mishaps. I came to this place because my buddy swore that the fried chicken and fried rice where to die for. Came in on Christmas Day and it was empty, perfect! It took a while for the employee at the register to take our order, she was the only one taking orders and was on the phone taking a delivery order. Once we got the food the fried chicken was golden crispy, fresh out the oil no doubt. The wing size was average - good. But the serving of rice that came with 4 wings was way too small. It was pretty flavorless and didn't seem to be "fried" rice - more like steamed rice. The chicken lomein was also pretty bland.
