We did family style and that is how I recommend eating the food. The portions are large. Ambiance is nothing to write home about, it's nice and homey. We ordered the pepper squid, beef, the honey walnut shrimp (my favorite BY FAR), fried rice, and seafood birds nest (my other favorite). The egg tarts were odd -- super buttery crust with an Asian-pudding-like filling; did not remind me of the traditional egg tart custards I had growing up in Houston. The misses were notable. Xiao long bao had no soup inside and the skin was too thick. Green beans from the cart had good flavor but arrived at room temp. The shrimp paste with eggplant was flat -- needed salt and more depth. We've been coming to Golden Palace for years for family lunches and dinners, especially to spend time with my mom our kids' only living grandparent so this place holds a lot of meaning for us. It's become a tradition, and we recently celebrated my daughter's birthday here just like we always do. The food is consistently amazing. Everything is always fresh and flavorful, especially the seafood. If you love crab, you absolutely have to try the crab with ginger and scallions it's incredible and full of flavor. For the record, my husband and I are Cantonese and have had dim sum all over the world so we know what dim sum is supposed to taste like. They have squid ink hargow (shrimp dumpling) too! A friend was in town from Houston and pinged several of us to see if we were available for brunch this past Sunday and we decided on dim sum. Golden Palace popped up as a good suggestion, so we met here. Fortunately, someone got there a bit earlier and got our name on the list because they don't take reservations. There was a long line of people waiting but we were seated within 15-20 minutes of putting our name on the list. There was some confusion as to best place to sit at the table to see the carts so we moved around a couple of times. The food was really good but ordering was confusing. The carts didn't come around that often and we had to flag our server down several times for the tea we ordered, cups, water, and questions on how we could order when the carts weren't coming around and we were hungry. They should have labels on their dim sum as the menu didn't always show the best photos of what was actually in the carts and it was not clear which carts had what items. Overall, we had a good time, the food was good, and the price was reasonable when split 6 ways! They offer cart services on the weekends, but "order by each item" on weekdays. So this is our 2nd time here - today we arrived at 1:45pm on Sunday. There were carts but the cart servers were not quick, ignored us for the most part and items from the carts that we did get were not hot. This was probably bc most of the service was focused on menu-orders (even dim sum) so most carts were either stripped before getting to our table or left parked near the kitchen for runners to grab items off of them. Food was not as good as before. The chicken feet were terrible (rubbery - chef seems to have forgotten the second part of the recipe - it had thin watery sauce with no aromatics or chilis) and the steamed bbq pork buns were awful (bread was ok but filling was dry and flavorless - my girls called them "crumbly") The baked BBQ pork buns were good, so I'm not sure what happened to the steamed buns. We ordered "osmanthus jelly" off the paper brochure menu and apparently the item pictured there was totally not correct. It wasn't bad - just know that this restaurant's osmanthus jelly is very basic and is nothing like the one pictured with multicolored layers. Lastly, the scallion pancakes were the biggest disappointment. They were made with sweet yeast dough and seasoned with cinnamon as well as scallions. So weird!! We LOVE scallion pancakes and have eaten them all over (including from street vendors in Shanghai) but have never had something as awful as this today. I think if the restaurant had presented it as Silver Thread or Gold Thread buns (as is common in Cantonese cuisine) they might have been ok, but these are definitely NOT northern scallion pancakes which are usually made with unleavened wheat dough and flaky layers. This was very bad. Lunch was not cheap - we spent $130 (not including tip) for mom, dad and 3 teenage girls. I hope the restaurant fixes these issues - we love dim sum and it's high time Austin has some real options. But unless they fix it, we'll just go back to New Fortune 2, which doesn't have carts or much variety but what food they have is good. read more

The wait for the food though was understandably long. The sticky rice in lotus leaf was the standout. They're stuff with minced meat, Chinese sausage and egg yolk. So yummy! There were five adults, so we got a nice variety of dishes. The peking duck was a delicious, although a bit on the smaller side, with the thin paper wrappers instead of the steamed buns. Ate Dim Sum here on a Sunday morning with family and it was packed! You can place your name at the front and they will call your number when the table is ready. It took about 20-30 min for 4 people. The space is very large so it seems like they can turn tables quickly. Service wasn't that great, it took a while to get access to carts and order food from the menu. The food was not great. They use tea bags for tea, instead of fresh tea. The shumai and sesame ball were fantastic but everything else was meh. The beef spare ribs were small and the egg custard tasted like butter. For a table for two on a Sunday, seating was immediate. The size of the restaurant is extensive and unfortunately, also contributes to its downfall. There's no clear system, pushers often miss tables, and honestly, there just aren't enough carts on the floor. I'd recommend dividing the floor into two sections and duplicating carts on each side. It would help ensure better coverage so no tables get missed. On the bright side, I like the fresh seafood tanks on display, the clean space, and the open kitchen that shows authentic cooks hard at work. FOOD: My go-to dim sum picks are Xiu Mai and Rice Noodles with Shrimp. The rice noodles come with sauce on the side (instead of poured over), which took away from the dish. I really wanted to love this place. We love dim sum and we loved New Fortune when it was here at this location. We still like Shanghai and the new New fortune and I heard about this place and we had to try it. Our high school's Chinese class took a little field trip to this area which gave me the opportunity to try this place during a weekday lunch so there are no carts during the weekday lunch so slightly disappointed about that but not many places do that anymore unless you're in Houston, but I was still excited to try this place. It is beautiful once you go in. It is spacious! Truly a place where you can do weddings. It was really pretty and elegant so we really like that. Just having lunch at dim sum in Houston a month ago in comparison but if it was good, I wouldn't have minded and I really wanted to give more stars to this place and I will explain why I knocked off one star. I was gonna give it four stars because things were going pretty well even though it was pricey we decided to try out the things that we like at most dim sum places. The most basic things we wanted like the porridge and that came out first and it was good. We got the Hargow, Shumai, the shrimp rice roll, chicken feet, of course and our favorite. Ham shui gok. One thing that's good and also bad is that it came out one at a time. We are not used to that because most dimsum places have them come out all together especially if you're pushing a cart but here it came out one at a time so you get to enjoy it one at a time. A positive which I would have given more stars is that it comes out piping hot and I love that for dim sum. I also noticed that they use huge shrimp. They don't mince the shrimp. They stick it in there really big, but that does mess with the texture like for the shrimp roll the skin fell apart the Hargow, the skin fell apart, and I'm not sure if that's just a consistency of the rice paper or because they use whole shrimp. Not that I'm complaining it was good did enjoy it. It took some getting used to though because it wasn't as authentic that way but not bad. The chicken feet was OK. It wasn't the best I've had but it wasn't bad. A big reason I knocked out one star here was our favorite dim sum Ham shui gok, a chewy fried ball filled with meat came out raw. I know it's not easy to make, but it isn't hard for a good dimsum chef however it came out not done. It was not right. The texture was wrong. I took a picture of that. It wasn't even done and it was just not good and that is something for a good dim sum place to really get right cause even 99 ranch gets it right. Besides of that I deducted a star because it seems so odd they would mess up in that plus the waiters didn't seem like they really knew what they're doing. Not sure if they spoke Chinese or not. I asked for a certain tea in Chinese. They didn't really understand what it was and we settled on puer and that was fine. However, the whole experience was just dimmed because of that last dish that came out not done and for the price it has to be done. Other than that not sure I will come back here for dim sum because there's other places in Austin that are better consistently which is important. We really wanted to like this place. I might come back if friends are coming back so we can try again, especially their dishes which I'm sure they're fine, especially wedding events food which I'm sure is fine too. Snazzy looking new dim sum place in the Chinatown Plaza on N Lamar just south of Braker. Dubbed Golden Palace Seafood & Dim Sum, we were primarily interested in the dim sum. But perhaps that was a mistake. Maybe we should be more interested in their seafood instead. The decor inside has shiny chandeliers for lighting, and some other aesthetic elements, such as birdcages. There are two sets of bathrooms: one set near the kitchen; the other side in the corner near the stage. The corner bathrooms are not ventilated or air conditioned, but they are clean. When staff members clean the tables, they spray cleaner which mists over the table and then disperses through the air and inevitably into your nose and food. We came on a weekday, first week of April. They were not carting, which was fine, and we were told to mark down our orders on the dim sum menu. We ordered seven dishes plus a half Peking duck. The menu setup and interior design do a nice job of elevating your expectations so that when the food comes out you'll be let down in a major way. Service and vibe are odd. No music is standard; silence is golden: staff who bring food and work in absolute silence, as they fumble trying to check off items. Some tables are situated in the center dividing line of the restaurant, next to a standing desk, which may periodically print out a receipt. As far as the food, I can't recommend this place, especially given that their pricing deviates from the quality of ingredients used and the quality of their food. Their Peking Duck? An oily disgusting mess with off-tasting meat (not even really seasoned), and oily soggy skin with plenty of fat still attached. Yes, it can be made palatable by using their pancakes, and sticking a bit of sauce on to mask the flavor along with cucumbers and scallions which were not julienned, honestly, the duck should not taste like that. We also ordered the following 7 dishes: - Signature Shrimp Dumpling - Shrimp Dumpling with Leeks - Sticky Rice Lotus Leaf - Chicken Feet in Oyster Sauce - Pea Shoots With Crabmeat Dumpling - Radish Cake - Osmanthus Cake The shrimp dishes were quite fine. Sticky rice and chicken feet were fairly standard, although the chicken feet were on the plainer side and more firm rather than soft and gelatinous. The radish cakes had good texture, and had bits of cured meat distributed throughout--definitely more rice-flour mushy than soft radish texture. Also lacked accompanying sauce. Since I dislike places that misrepresent their food ingredients, I will point out that their Pea Shoots with Crabmeat Dumpling utilizes artificial crab, and had contained chopped shrimp bits. The Osmanthus Cake was a firmer jello with hints of osmanthus from the flowers distributed within. Finally, the price points of menu items raises expectations about the quality of food and ingredients used. Unfortunately, this restaurant, whether named "Tian" or "Golden Palace" fails to meet the mark for their dim sum and Peking duck offering. Therefore I cannot recommend this restaurant if you are looking to enjoy those dishes. read more

I think Tian might be the best dim sum I've had in Austin! (Not that the bar is super high.) But it definitely exceeded my expectations after being let down again and again by other spots. The restaurant itself is pretty spacy with lots of nice decorations, and really sells the experience with the dim sum carts that come along to every table. I've heard a lot of people having trouble with wait times, but we went around 11am on a Saturday and we were able to be seated immediately. The food is pretty good, and they have a lot of good options. They don't have as much variety as more senior spots, but they do have most of the classics! The service is also super attentive. Our drinks were always filled, and there was a server walking around making sure you knew what was coming out, what wouldn't be on the carts but could be made in the kitchen, and taking our orders when we wanted something, but hadn't seen the cart come to us yet. I do want to highlight the egg tarts though. Usually I like egg tarts, but I don't mind passing on ordering them if I'm too full. But you should purposely save room in your stomach for these! Even just looking at them, the color of the egg tarts are such a deep orangey color, like surely they're using some high quality eggs! Or it could be some very convincing food dye but they just looked so beautiful. And then the custard was so creamy and delicate and soft. That combined with the super buttery, thin, and flaky crust. I hope a table of 10 wasn't coming in after us. Ha! All the dishes we had were good (har gow, xiu mai, fried taro, rice cake, chow fun rolls, sticky rice, chicken feet, steamed bao, gai lan). They still had plenty of everything and items were hot. My sis confirmed this was the same Tian as the one in Dallas. Service was good. We couldn't find all the dim sum my dad wanted so the server actually walked around looking for the dishes for him and remembered every one as they came out. Such great service! Golden Palace was a recommendation from a friend for Sunday morning dimsum. We got there right when it opened and it was not too busy yet, but it can get busy quickly and usually has a bit of a wait. There a big hall with lots of tables and rolling carts with lots of dimsum options - one of the few in Austin with this set up! As a vegetarian, there's not a ton of dimsum veg options, but that's not unexpected. The options that they did have and I got to taste were very good! I believe this is the only dim sum place in Austin with actual dim sum carts. Came here around noon on a Sunday and there was no wait so that's nice. Their dim sum selection wasn't huge but it covered all the basics. We got the shui mai, pork spare ribs, chicken feet, egg tarts and pineapple buns. Everything was pretty good and the price was decent. I would definitely come back for my next dim sum experience since I prefer having actual dim sum carts than ordering from the menu. We came right when they opened on a Sunday morning, and we were able to get seated within 10 minutes. They're still in their soft opening, so I would expect service to not be the best. We definitely were waiting around for two items that never seemed to come by, but we did eventually grab the elusive items from some carts right when we were about to give up. Overall, the flavor of every dish is pretty good. They have quite a few standout dim sum dishes like century egg & pork congee, egg tarts, egg custard lava buns, shiu mai, and pork steamed rolls. The texture of the dim sum is quite good on many of the dim sum items, and that's what I usually like to evaluate to gauge how good a dim sum restaurant is. I would skip on the radish/turnip cakes because the texture was way too mushy. Finally got to try out Tian Tian / Golden Palace which used to be New Fortune years ago. Came here with my family on Sunday for brunch. Tons of parking & walked in with no wait. Place was fairly busy but not crowded. Maybe because of the time change and people still waking up. Immediately sat down, server got our drinks. Dim Sum carts were immediately at our table - all fresh and hot. We ordered dumplings, xiao long bao, shrimp & pork human, red bean sesame balls, deep fried squid, noodles and Chinese brocolli. Dim sum starts at 10 on weekends! Get there early to avoid the wait. I think they're still working on the flavoring of their food or maybe still in the R&D phase, we went middle of March before their grand opening. Excellent customer service though. The servers were attentive, and even replaced plates and filled up waters without even asking. The dim sum is alright, not as good as the ones you'd find in NYC or Philly. The rice noodle rolls were very bland. The shrimp was naturally sweet, but had very little flavor. The beef one was bland too, and also wasn't as hot when we got it. The chicken feet was sweet. more like cha siu marinade than a black bean. The pork ribs didn't have black bean sauce, but it had edamame (which was weird to see) The hargow and shu mai weren't bad; I've just had better. The fried shrimp tofu skin and fried shrimp balls were a hit with the kids though. Soup dumplings were not good. The skins were thick, not enough soup inside. Yummy! I came here with my family on a Friday night and was pleasantly surprised with the food. We ordered a lobster entree and we really liked that they brought it over alive for us to see - it shows that the seafood dishes here are fresh!
