4.5 Stars!
Cantonese restaurant are not as plentiful in Flushing these days, so when we heard that this restaurant opened, we were eager to go. Extra bonus points for not being in Downtown Flushing! Plenty of street parking; located on the corner, right next door to Picnic Garden.
We were celebrating my Aunt's milestone birthday and this was a fabulous meal. My Uncle, who is a chef, is usually very quiet and most times, doesn't have much to say. Well, at the end of this meal, he "announced" that every single dish was delicious and very fresh...now THAT is a compliment, coming from him!
These are the (mostly) outstanding dishes we shared tonight (note that portion sizes are large):
- Famous Garlic Aromatic Crispy Chicken (half $18.99): this was the only dish that I didn't love. It was just ok. The chicken was actually a little dry and the garlic flavors weren't bold enough. But ya gotta have chicken on your birthday!! (Chinese tradition).
- Fresh eel sauteed with serrano green peppers, peppers, & onions in fermented black bean sauce ($63): this dish was excellent and unique. I've never had this before and really loved this dish. (But didn't love the price; more about this below).
- Steamed Silver Carp Fresh Fish ($59): this was an outstanding dish! It was one of the fresh fish from their tanks. It was prepared perfectly; smooth & silky, and just delicious. Fragrant hot oil was poured over the fish and scallions.
- Peking Pork Chops ($15.99): On special occasions, we always order this dish in memory of my Grandmother since it was one of her fave dishes. This version was a tad sweeter than we prefer and not as crispy as usual but still a good dish.
- Sauteed pea sprouts ($19.99): This was a delicious, endless platter of pea sprouts! One of my fave veggies. It would have been even better if they used more garlic though.
- Salted fish & chicken fried rice ($15.99): really flavorful and delicious rice. There wasn't a lot of salted fish but delicious nonetheless.
- Rice: bowl of white rice is $1.75
- Mango Pudding/Jello (complimentary): What a nice surprise! This was so refreshing and slightly sweet. Perfect ending to an outstanding meal.
- Cold Pumpkin Tapioca Soup (complimentary): Another great surprise! I've had tapioca soup before but never with pumpkin. Delightful.
Complimentary desserts:
We really appreciated these delicious, unique desserts; and they didn't even know we were there for my Aunt's birthday! Chinese restaurants usually serve slices of oranges for dessert; but during covid times, many restaurants have cut back on costs and don't even give oranges any more! This was a wonderful ending to a fabulous meal!
So why 4.5 Stars, and not 5 Stars:
Sticker shock at the prices of the fresh fish ($63) and eel ($59) dishes. The prices on the menu were not listed but we asked, and we were quoted a reasonable price, so we ordered them. I'm sure there was something lost in translation since my Chinese isn't great but wow, were we shocked when we got the check. Apparently the quoted prices were for per lb, not per dish. So be warned! Anything in their fresh fish tanks are most probably $$$ But, they'll be delicious! LOL
This is probably going to be my family's new go-to place for Cantonese food. Super clean, great service, great hospitality, great location! We will most definitely be back! Next on our radar: King Crab!! read more
