I am writing this review on 11/13/16. As of two days ago this claim was NOT valid. Earlier this year (2016) I took a treasured pocket watch to Goldworks for an estimate. Since the watch had been untouched, not wound, but in a secure place for a number of years I didn't expect it to be running. But when I wasn't able to wind it using any reasonable pressure, I guessed something internal had gone wrong. With that in mind I turned the watch over to Goldworks for an estimate, and when the estimate came in higher than I'd expected I was surprised. However, since I was told that because the watch would need to be completely disassembled and cleaned, a great deal of expert work would be involved. So I swallowed hard, accepted the quote and paid in full. The watch was ready for pickup in a very short time and I accepted it. However, upon reflection I began to wonder and asked questions of the store manager. I got no satisfaction. I do not represent that the following dialogue is verbatim, but it was written within hours of our conversation and does convey the conversation to the best of my recollection: What service was performed? (The watch was taken apart. repaired and reassembled.) Can you give me an idea of how much of the cost was parts and how much labor? (No, we don't do that; It was a package deal.) What tests or procedure led to the conclusion that the watch would require such extensive, expensive service.? (None needed. Any watch that old would require it.) I am pretty unhappy; can we reconsider the cost? (No.) I had at that time and still have doubts that the watch actually was overhauled by a qualified watchmaker. Factors contributing to my doubt include: ...the inscription which made the watch precious to me was illegible. However in only a few minutes with jeweler's rouge and a soft cloth I restored the inscription to legibility. ...why when the repair is guaranteed for a year does my receipt not show the serial number of the watch in order to make certain that no unethical customer brings in a different Waltham watch? The serial number is engraved on the movement of the watch and hence can be seen only after the initial dis-assembly.) ...why is the watch's current "rate" not specified? Over time and due to changes in temperature the "rate" at which a mechanical timepiece gains or loses time will change. When the watch was returned to me its "rate" was almost a half-minute per day slow. Did the purported "overhaul" include adjusting this setting? To seek answers to these questions I took the watch to an adjacent community and presented it at the first Jewelry and Watch Repair shop I came to. Here the actual watch repair professional was present and when I told him I couldn't wind the watch (I'd allowed it to run down again) he chuckled and said "Look if you press the stem IN like this or pull it OUT like that...." and within a minute he'd wound the spring, set the time and handed the watch back with a smile. No charge. I then asked him what a complete overhaul and cleaning would cost if the watch should ever need it. He referred to a thick book of some sort and in a minute he quoted me a price about half that of Goldworks. From this second opinion I conclude that I was grossly overcharged, to say the least. Goldworks is a tremendous local jewelry store in Half Moon Bay. They are incredibly welcoming and kind. My son and I recently popped in to see if we could re-size a bracelet that he had purchased for my wife while on vacation. The bracelet was worth no more than $30, but Josh, the owner, took time out of his day to quickly make the adjustment and didn't even charge us. The center stone to a ring my husband got me on our honeymoon fell out on Mother's day. I was able to find it but was so worried it would never be the same again. I took my ring into Goldworks and they were able to securely reset the stone. They also polished the opal in such a way that the fire is more vivid now than it was when the ring was purchased! $60 and two days later my ring is better than new. While waiting in the store I looked around at all the Jewelry they had on display and I wanted to buy EVERYTHING! Their pieces are so beautiful and they have something for every budget! read more

We were in town from Portland to visit are favorite Jeweler to have my wedding ring replaced and learned the shop is now under new management. We were pleasantly surprised the service was even better then we remembered and my warranty replacement was handled with the utmost professionalism. Josh had my new ring shipped to Portland within the week. They also cleaned my wife's ring while we waited and made the ring look just like new. I really really wish I could patronize this place because they're so conveniently located for me, but their customer service is not great. The first time we brought something in for fixing, the guy at the cash register said he didn't think it could be fixed, but fortunately the actual jeweller was right there and said he would do it. That piece came out great. Next time, the same guy at the register swore up and down that my two pieces couldn't be fixed, so I took those pieces (and another) over to Topper Fine Jewelers in Burlingame. Topper did the upgrades I wanted, no problem, and I wear the beautiful refurbished pieces all the time. So I guess I have a new jeweller now, and Goldworks lost out on ~$500 of work. Maybe Goldworks really didn't have the wherewithal to fulfil my requests but given my prior experience I wonder if the problem was just the register guy's general air of negativity. My advice is that if you need a repair go when the jeweller is in so you can get a real professional opinion and bypass the register guy. read more
