Bottom line: Creative menu of tasty burgers, excellent milk shakes, cold "just okay" fries, and sloooooow service (I thought this was supposed to be a fast-food place!).
I waited until the congressional recess ended before braving what I heard had been ridiculously long lines at Good Stuff Eatery, the newest culinary venture for Spike Mendelsohn, of Top Chef fame. But as I made my way over to a Penn. Ave. bar for Monday Night Football, I figured the time to sample Good Stuff had finally arrived.
I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in the door and found no sign of a ridiculously long line or an interminable wait for our food. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving. I thought 30 minutes would be plenty of time for my friend and me to grab a burger, some fries, and a milkshake before sliding into a comfy booth at the bar down the street in time for kickoff. I was sadly mistaken.
We placed our orders really quickly and were handed a couple of those little pager things that would let us know when we could pick up our food. We made our way over to the soda machine and condiment bar, stocked up on napkins and a couple cups of flavored mayo. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. After about 20 minutes, my pager finally went off, and then we waited about five more minutes for my friend's order to be ready.
At this point, we were starving and, yes, we were "ready for some football." We tore open our respective bags of food and dove into the fries, which were barely even warm. They were also sort of "short," like we'd gotten the scraps at the bottom of the last batch to come from the fryer. But we were hungry and in a hurry, so it wasn't exactly a deal-breaker. Just as I was about to sink my teeth into my turkey burger, which was topped with generous slices of avocado, my friend noticed that the "vegetarians are people too" portabella sandwich she'd ordered was not actually what she got. What she got was something red and meaty and definitely would not do. Disappointed, she went back downstairs to try to make an exchange.
Five minutes passed, then ten...and no sign of my friend. Finally, I just couldn't wait any more, so I started eating my turkey burger. It was well-flavored, and the bun-to-burger ratio was ideal. The tomato on top was nice and sweet, not-too-thick and not-too-thin. The lettuce added just the right amount of crunch. I added some of the mango mayo to the bottom bun, which I thought complimented the avocado nicely. The burger was satisfying enough to at least get me to consider coming back and sampling another one of Spike's creations, after I get over the less-than-stellar service.
When she finally got what she ordered, my friend seemed happy with her mushroom "burger" too. Good thing we decided to split the milkshake--it was thick and rich and chocolate-y...and plenty to serve two people.
I wish I could have given this place three and a half stars, but I rounded up to four, only because I consider Good Stuff a positive step up from local burger institution Five Guys. I really want to like this place...maybe with a little more time, they'll work out the kinks in the service. read more
