I've been going to Good Stuff off and on since it opened and while it was excellent in the first few years. However, in recent years, it has become a hot mess. The store itself is unkempt and hasn't been painted in some time. The menu is stuck in the early 2010s. But the service has become DC bizarre. We arrived and my son got the Obama burger and enjoyed it. My wife got a salad and added chicken and enjoyed it. I ordered the free-range turkey burger, no cheese. He asked which turkey burger and I said not the Michelle melt because it comes with cheese. I can't have cheese because it would make me sick. However the other ingredients for the free range turkey burger looked fine. You can guess where this is going. One bite of the turkey burger and I realize there was cheese on it. Something that would make me sick. So, I took burger back, and the manager refuse to give me a new turkey burger without cheese. In all my years of going to restaurants, I don't believe I've ever had a manager refused to exchange something that would make me sick with something that would not make me sick. I was not happy, and expressed my displeasure asking why the customer is always wrong. The manager said that I should apologize for placing an incorrect order. There is something definitely wrong with how this operation is run A few minutes later, the cashier came out and offered to make a new turkey burger without cheese. I thanked him and said that would be fine. Then, about five minutes later, he came out and said that his general manager wanted to speak with me on the phone. I said that I didn't think that would be necessary. A new turkey burger would be fine. 20 minutes later, nothing. So apparently the night manager had a disagreement with the cashier about whether I should get a new turkey burger. I know this all seems trivial, given all the things going on in the world, but if you want to avoid any aggravation, I would avoid good stuff eatery at all costs. read more

I really liked the food I got at Good Stuff Eatery but I think it's pricey for what you get. I got the steakhouse burger with snack fry and cookies and cream mini shake, and my bill was over $17. However, the quality of the burger and fries makes up for it! When I first saw the burger, it was smaller than what I expected it to be but it was delicious. My friend got the village fries that has fresh thyme, rosemary and seasalt on it which I liked better than the regular fries I got. I didn't know that was an option so you should order the village fries if you want a little bit more seasoning on your fries! I also tried the prez obama burger and it was sooo good. I had to wait awhile after I ordered but I heard that it's usually quicker. Also, they have a lot of options for sauces which I loved. They have ketchup, mustard, old bay, sriracha, and mango (my favorite). I would definitely try the different sauces and see what you like! read more

After a busy morning being tourists at the Capitol and Library of Congress, the food at Good Stuff Eatery is exactly that -- "good stuff". While my fellow introverts may be intimidated by the line and wall of people, it moves relatively quickly and therefore is worth going in for a bite. I ordered the Steakhouse Burger (fried onion strings, mushrooms, and cheese - yes please) while my husband had the Spike's Sunnyside. Getting both as the "good stuff deal" included a drink and fries for a little under $4. While it seems the restaurant is well known for shakes I opted to skip and just indulge in their French fries which are incredibly good. Plus -- dipping sauces! Although it does take a little longer than most Burger type places (think Five Guys, Burger Fi, etc) the wait was worth it as the food definitely hit the spot. read more

I came here to grab a bite before an event I had so I wanted a good burger to satiate me during that time. Burgers are good for that. I've been to GSE, some years ago but remember they're decent. When I went there, it was mostly empty with a small group outside and a bigger group upstairs. I ordered the turkey burger with drink and fries. Outside they have decent seating but I noticed my AT&T only had one bar so I came inside. The downstairs seating had room for about 6-7 barstools but there were only two. I chose one and it was really uncomfortable with the seat itself and there was no leg room in front. So I went upstairs. It took me 20 minutes to get my burger and fries. They have a good selection of condiments for the fries. When I went upstairs to eat my burger, I noticed it smelled bad, kinda like fish. I wasn't sure if that was bad which I really should've known but I didn't have time to give it back and wait for another burger so I ate it. Of course later, I could feel food poisoning coming on so I nipped that in the bud which I will spare you the details. $20 for a 20 minute burger that smelled bad and likely caused food poisoning was not worth it. I imagine that's not the common experience, but it was my experience and I likely won't go there again to see if it has improved. read more

Love at first sip. Tried the Farmhouse Bacon Cheese, the Prez Obama Burger, and Spike's Village Fries. The Farmhouse Bacon Cheese comes with tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and onions. The bun was slightly sweet and buttery. It was squished from the tight packaging. The meat patty was seasoned well and juicy. The Prez Obama Burger comes with bacon, onion marmalade, Roquefort cheese, and horseradish mayo. The sweet bun and onion marmalade, smokey bacon, salty cheese and slight zing from the horseradish mayo made me an instant fan. These burgers may not be the prettiest ones I've ever seen, but it was definitely love at first bite. Spike's Village Fries were packed with fresh thyme and rosemary. As soon as I opened the burger bag I could smell a gush of fresh herbs. There is a complimentary sauce bar on the main floor which includes old bay mayo, sriracha mayo, chipotle mayo, and mango mayo. I'm usually good about eating my packed lunch, but my coworkers invited me out to Good Stuff Eatery and I'm so glad that I joined. There are three locations in the DC/VA area - Capitol Hill, Georgetown, and Crystal City. I ordered the Good Stuff Melt (melted cheddar and muenster, mmm!) combo with fries and a drink and devoured every little bit of it. With fries, you can also grab specialty sauces (Old Bay, chipotle mayo, and good ol' ketchup) to go along with it. Ordering was quick, the food came out within 15 minutes, and there were a few seats available throughout the restaurant. I must've came in on an off day because I had no issues with the wait or timing of the food. Spike always annoys me on those Food Network shows, but I can't deny that this place is awesome. Both the burgers and shakes were great and extremely satisfying. This is a nice spot too - the counter for ordering is downstairs, along with the refillable soda fountains. The upstairs area has plenty of seating, and best of all, a charging station with several outlets for charging your battery-starved iPhones. Anyway, the food is all really delicious. The burgers are of the small, sloppy Shake Shack variety, and I kinda think the one I got was just as good. I got the Colletti's Smokehouse Burger, which consists of bacon, cheddar, onion rings and BBQ sauce. The meat was cooked a perfect medium rare, and was nice and pink without being too bloody. I also like the patties here are way thicker than some of the other burger joints of this style. I usually need to get a double to get any kind of satisfaction, but I was perfectly happy with the single here. The fries are great too - though Spike's Village Fries and Sunny's Handcut Fries are pretty much exactly the same (just pick one), they are all good. Super super greasy of course, which you could tell since the bag they came in was completely see-through, but they were piping hot, very salty, and nice and crispy. Lastly, one of the things it seems like every single person that wrote a Yelp review ordered is the Toasted Marshmallow Shake. I found out that there is a good reason for that, as this shake is great. I definitely think this place has the edge on Shake Shack for shakes. The much bigger variety here is partly what does it for me - instead of just a few vanilla flavors, they have a ton of choices here. I also tried another shake, the Milky Way Malt, which was even better. That was a lot of fat, grease and heavy cream to eat in such a fast meal. On my continuing quest to find my favorite burger in DC, I came and got the Prez Obama Burger, Village Fries, and a toasted marshmallow shake. But let's start with the general vibe. Good Stuff Eatery has ample seating upstairs, with a few bar stools downstairs (although there is no actual bar) and outside seating in front of the restaurant. Plenty of options. The upstairs area, where I sat, is interesting because it has almost a sports bar feel, until you note that political news is on all the TVs and you are reminded that you are in Capitol Hill. The Prez Obama burger comes with an onion marmalade that is good but a bit overbearing and greasy, Roquefort cheese that works well, and a nice horseradish mayo sauce. It comes by default with applewood bacon, but I skipped this since I don't eat pork. The burger itself is good, though not mind-blowing, and it was pretty undercooked. I don't take mine well-done, but this patty was legitimately quite bright on the inside, and they don't ask you how you would like it cooked when you order (a sad departure for boutique burger shops in the District). Like most of their burgers, it comes in a somewhat sloppy package, so focus more on the taste than presentation. Spike's Village Fries are FANTASTIC! Cut to be nether too thin nor too thick, and with a healthy topping of thyme and rosemary. I'm always down for fries with rosemary, so I was already smiling. They are complimented by six or eight different sauces that you can choose from (or choose all of), including chipotle, Old Bay, and mango. The toasted marshmallow shake was deeeelicious. And yep, it tastes just like marshmallows roasted over a campfire! If you're a tourist, go here, you won't regret it. Although, a fast food spot, Good Stuff prides itself on quality. There's a variety of burgers that are locally sourced and made to perfection. The pricing is reasonable and the food is worth the wait time. I've had a few of their shakes and burgers in the past, and have no complaints. The onion petals are so, so. I'd give them a hard pass and get the fries instead. Next you'll be faced with the "dilemma" of traditional french fries, or the Village fries. I facetiously put dilemma in quotation marks, because the choice is a no brainer for me (traditional duh). The Village fries are good if you're into rosemary. Clearly I'm not, so after the first time I made the regretful decision of getting the Village fries, I learned to k.i.s.s. (Keep it simple stupid) There are also veggie options, as well as chicken and turkey burgers for my non-beef eaters reading this (yes, Good Stuff did not neglect you). Had 2 hours of sleep, really hungry, and needed somewhere to eat fast. We were close to the Capitol building, and we found this joint online after seeing a picture of Obama at it (why wouldn't I eat here). The decor was really folky and old-fashioned, with a little bit of a modern twist--your stereotypical hipster-esque restaurant. The restaurant was filled with the smell of sizzling beef and fries. The menu was fairly simple, with the classic options, and specialty burgers poking fun at politics. I ordered the Prez-Obama Burger, and the food came out in less than 15 minutes (you get an electronic tracker as well). The prez burger was really good. The buns are really soft and buttery, which were comparable to those hawaiian sweet buns. The beef was charred to perfection, and stayed juicy at the same time without drying out. The applewood bacon was sweet and savory, crispy, just the way you would like bacon. The onion marmalade added a tangy twist, while the crumbly Roquefort Cheese was sweet and creamy. The horseradish sauce gave the burger that final kick, but it was really subtle and not overpowering. All the flavors melded well together, and worked perfectly. The fries, however, were a different story. They looked like they were fried to a crispy golden brown, but were left out long enough to become soggy and mushy. They looked like the fries from Five Guys, minus the Cajun seasoning. Overall it was a good burger place and had a really nice atmosphere. 3.5 stars Burger purists will not like Good Stuff Eatery because the beefiness of a good quality patty was lost among a plethora of toppings and sauces . The burger here was fully cooked and placed on a bun that was too small. Some of the toppings like bbq sauce and roquefort cheese were too overpowering for the burger. I would recommend just ordering the regular hamburger or cheeseburger. While the burger was good, it wasn't extraordinary if you already had the pleasure of a Ray's burger. The burger here was like a supporting actor while the milk shake and fries were the stars. The toasted marshmallow shake was so rich and creamy, and the flavor resembled the top caramelized layer of an excellent creme brulee. It was too rich for one person to finish, so sharing is a must. I am a sucker for fries and dipping mayo. I couldn't resist trying all four, which were old bay, mango, sriracha, and chipotle. I couldn't taste much mango flavor in the mayo, but the sweet and slightly sour taste was a welcoming addition to the 3 spicy mayo. My favorite were the sriracha and chipotle mayo. The old bay wasn't very good as the old bay seasoning was too salty to pair with seasoned fries. As for the fries, I loved the rosemary flavor, but they could improve on the cut of the fries and make them more crispy (like Beck's fries). Last year, this was the first place I went when I arrived to DC. This year, this was my last stop before I went to Union Station. I highly recommend the Obama burger and Spike Village fries. I first gave Good Stuff Eatery a 3 because after many years in DC and many, many, many visits to Good Stuff, I am a little over it. But even after dozens of visits, it still is a DC classic for a very good reason. It really is good stuff. I always get village fries and the President Obama burger and Cherry Coke. They have flavored mayo and the sirachi is amazing (as is the chipotle). I take tourists here and they always fall deeper into love with DC afterwards. Always been a bit on the fence about Good Stuff, one of many in the fast casual burger world. This location used to be packed to the gills with tourists and Capitol Hill workers, difficult to navigate as far as the line, etc and always had averagely friendly staff at best. We stopped by in the world of COVID-19, with no one in the place, figuring we would give another go. The soda fountain was offline, the lemonade drinks gone and the sauce bar removed. The "combo" which adds fries and a drink provided a canned soda in the absence of the fountain drinks... so same price for a 12 oz soda versus unlimited fountain. We ordered, asked for a cup of water and received a 6 oz cup of water. We sat out front and they brought our orders out. One of us got ketchup and napkins in our bag and one of us didn't. The burger was ok, average-sized and the steamed bun felt melty. The fries, stuffed in a bag in a bag were hot but a bit under-cooked and were just an oily mess. I hate still being hungry after eating though. The topper - after looking at my receipt - was an unannounced 5.5% ($0.61 in my account) Cvd19 Surcharge. So, pay MORE for LESS. The Washington Post recommended this place for a cheap burger, so off I went for dinner one night. After ordering and getting my drink, I received a buzzer and grabbed a seat in the upstairs seating area. When the food was ready, I was buzzed and I was ready to eat. There was a large assortment of sauces available for the taking at the condiment station; I grabbed ketchup and Old Bay for my fries. The Colletti's Smokehouse burger I ordered was piled high with onion rings, but it was quite greasy and the bun didn't hold up well to the barbecue sauce it was doused with. The fresh-cut fries were relatively soggy, but there were a lot of them. Overall, the burger tasted pretty similar to Shake Shack and it was as overpriced, IMO. If I'm dropping $14 on a burger, fries, and soda, it better be a darn good burger, and I could have gotten a better meal at Five Guys for less money. Is it a decent burger? Yes.
