Gott's Roadside was famous for its burgers and other delicious main courses. Its takeout stand at the inside of the Ferry Building was only good for frozen soft serve. The reason why I came to Gott's takeout stand was to try their soft serve. And their oatly version beckoned me to try one, just like what the sign was written. I got the oatly vanilla soft serve with bits of almonds, no additional toppings though. Well, still taste, with the lack of a better description, the same vanilla flavor as before. Even when it's a little chilly outside, a spoonful of vanilla made me feel like I'm walking on snow. Just another holiday season to frolic! XD Customer service? Oh, that's right! The Soft Serve of Gott's is heavenly, light and creamy and tastes sooooo good. Favors are basic: Straus Organic Vanilla,Straus Organic Dutch Chocolate, Oatly Vanilla (Vegan), Oatly Chocolate (Vegan), Salted Caramel, and Fior di Latte (Sweet Cream). TL:DR save your money and go to Humphry Slocombe's next door where you will spend the same amount of money for more ice cream that is better tasting, better looking and better quality, while the workers will also be honest and upfront about charges. We tried Humphry's which is leagues beyond Gott's but did not know that until our sad ice cream was paid for and served. We ordered a simple vanilla waffle cone dipped in chocolate. For $8. Was the cone filled even half as much as Humphry's? Nope. Was the taste and quality anywhere near that of Humphry's? Not even close. Were we told that the thin layer of chocolate dip is a whole $1 extra? Nah. I completely understand the differences of business costs, labor, rent, repairs for machinery, foods, and ingredients, all that to make a business run. But being charged the same amount for ice cream on two completely different ends of the quality and taste spectrum is a little hard to pass off. read more

Tried 3 flavors --- (1) the Fior di latte which is like a sweet cream, loved that it was very lightly sweet and malt/milky - def. my fave flavor. Originally went here because my aunt told me they had good milkshakes, but they actually don't have milkshakes at the takeout window! You must go to the sit-down restaurant for that as far as I know. So, I got the chocolate soft serve instead and was pretty impressed. I'm not much of an ice cream person and normally would never bother to write a review about plain chocolate soft serve, but they really packed a lot of chocolate flavor into theirs, which makes it stand out. Yes it is a little overpriced but so is everything else in SF so it's not a huge surprise. Bold move selling soft serve just paces away from Humphry Slocombe. It's pretty tasty as far as soft serve goes, but it doesn't quite stand up to all the innovative churned flavors across the way. If you get a dip or toppings, it actually isn't that much cheaper than the aforementioned direct competitor. Salted Caramel w/ Chocolate Dip: The salted caramel soft serve is way fancier than the boring old vanilla or chocolate. Thankfully it tastes more like caramel than salt. The chocolate shell dip is pretty much exactly how non-fancy ice cream trucks would dip cones back in the day. It cracks in a very satisfying way when you bite into it. And it's got that signature waxy chew if you happen to take on a lot at once. Coffee Float: This was pretty simple. Vanilla soft serve, chocolate syrup and Blue Bottle iced coffee. Yet the combination was so delicious. After about a minute the ice cream on the bottom floats to the top, making it a true Float. At this stage you can eat it with a spoon, like the iced coffee is a topping. But at some point there is no longer any solid ice cream left because you ate some and the rest melted. Now switch to a straw and it's better than any fancy coffee drink from Starbucks. Love the multiple stages of this dessert. Coffee Ice Cream w/ Caramel Sauce & Toasted Coconut: Props to myself for picking such a nice combo. They were generous with both the caramel and the toasted coconut shavings, so the top of the ice cream tasted just like a Girl Scout cookie. Long Version: I am a Bay Area native and take my family to the Ferry Building about once a month. We needed to catch the ferry home after a long day of walking around and decided to stop for some ice cream at Gott's Roadside. The line was super short compared to another ice cream merchant, so we went for Gott's. The people working were not welcoming, very rude, and rushed with their service. Our child, who couldn't understand why they were being so rude, began crying from their treatment. We did our best to place our order based off the menu. The staff was unhelpful, looked annoyed, and were yelling at us. There is a difference between raising your voice so that someone can hear and shouting with a tone of anger. A lot of negativity from the staff. The ice cream did not taste good. We will never return to this merchant. They ruined an otherwise amazing day in SF. If you are standing facing Gott's Roadside, we noticed an ice cream merchant directly to the left. We will try that one next time. I've tried a lot of soft serve in the city and this is one of my favorites. There are a bunch of ice cream options in the ferry building, but I inevitably always end up here. Though I do prefer soft-serve over scoops, so mabye I'm a little biased. I usually get the small Fior di Latte in a cup (~$4). Definitely recommend getting the small since it's super rich and creamy.
