I was okay with the salad until I bit into a cucumber. I've never had a cucumber in my fajita taco salad before. It wasn't bad, just different. First time at Gran Maya Mexican Grill. Not sure why it took me so long, but they've been on my list a long time. Unfortunately this review is tardy, my apologies. I dined with them for an early weekday meal in mid May. Upon arrival there was plenty of parking in their own lot. A friendly hostess seated our party of five with menus. We had a waiter bring waters as we decided on our food. The dining room was spacious and spic and span. The bar sets in the center. There was almost no guest upon arrival. It filled in to some degree with military with the base nearby. Our waiter set us up with chips and salsa that were ok taste wise. They do not offer the white sauce I prefer. We decided as a table to get table cause guacamole. The staff was great and it's bit of a show to see it made in front of you. Tipping is optional, but we did. We all agreed it was tasty and more than enough for five. I ordered the steak ranchero that's a ribeye, refried beans, rice and two eggs. It pricey, but proved to be delicious meal. Others ordered various items and enjoyed. All meals were delivered at the same time within 15 minutes. There was also a quick check, but then no follow up for water refills unfortunately. Gran Maya Mexican Grill is a solid Mexican spot. It takes the place of what used to be AppleBee's with a similar configuration but different decorations. The food is solid and I enjoyed my carne asada burrito but the meat wasn't seasoned evenly. Sometimes there was an explosion of flavors and sometimes I didn't taste anything. I really enjoyed this restaurant. The service was excellent. Our server was from Chiapas, Mexico. I did not get his name unfortunately but he was great. The food was very good. I would go back. The table-made guacamole was fantastic. I got the California Quesadilla. It was not loaded with cheese and was really good. This was an unplanned visit and it did not disappoint at all. I came here finally wanted to go in ever since it opened, haven't so I had a lot more time today so I went and ordered to go and inside was lovely clean and beautiful. The server who took my order was friendly. I ordered Tortas of the lunch menu with steak and than I also got the tacos de carne asada for my brother. Took it home and the torta the bread was flat, but it was good. The salsa was tasty and good flavor. The chips were ok and than my brother said the tacos were good and the rice was good as well. Took 10 minutes wait, but did not seem long will go back to try the other items on the menu. Though when I looked on the menu on website the lunch price for the tortas was not the same as I ordered at the restaurant, but it was fine I had enough. OK! Aim not too sure how to put this experience into words. So this is the place my bestie chose for her birthday. Let's start with our server. She was very pleasant and attentive we kinda figured out she was a little new because other staff came over to ensure we had what we ordered or needed. A few of us had drinks. I chose the Dirty Shirley which is the Vodka added version of a Shirley Temple. Well that was a horrible choice as it tasted like Robitussen DM. So that didn't get finished so never order that drink... now the reason I gave them 3 stars is because we went to use the female bathroom and how can i describe it. You ever talk to someone that had rotting stomach bad breath like that not eating onions bad breath that's something rotting deep down in your stomach bad breath. Well that bathroom smell like the pipes were rotting from the inside. The whole time I was in there I became a mouth breather. Then I thought what if it's something airborne OMG! I visited Gran Maya twice over two weeks. I can say I enjoyed both of my visits. Pictured below is the Fried Avocado Tacos and a Steak Quesadilla. After all of the toppings the tacos were great (minus the store bought barely toasted tortillas). The quesadillas tasted fine but nothing crazy to make it stand out from other Mexican grills. Service was odd however, I was seated by one person, drink brought by another, third one took my order, and a fourth for the bill. Regardless, I was always taken care of with refreshments and check ins. This restaurant seems to be on the slower side both times I've visited but with that being said the staff is still constantly moving whether it be cleaning, stocking, or checking in on customers. Restaurant was very clean and felt pleasant to be in as a result. I believe the restaurant could possibly benefit from things such as fresh made tortillas in house. Or perhaps a better structured staff. With all that said I definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoy a Mexican grill. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Gran Maya. My friends and I showed up at lunchtime just about an hour after opening. The parking lot was big and empty so we were not sure what to expect. Fortunately, we were met with smiling faces and were seated immediately. Our server, Isabela, was great and helped me choose something from the menu. Before she left for her break, she communicated to us that we should ask another server to help us, who was very friendly and helpful as well. I got the birria tacos and they were really delicious and filling. While we were eating, many more parties filled the tables and the environment felt much more homey and family-friendly. My husband and I finally tried Gran Maya on a Saturday evening. We recently moved closer to the area and have been on a mission to find the best Mexican restaurant nearby. Gran Maya made the list, but unfortunately, it's not at the top for us. I pass by the restaurant often, and the parking lot never seems full--this was the case when we arrived, so we were seated right away. The restaurant was spacious with plenty of seating, and with few customers that evening, we enjoyed a quiet dinner. We started with complimentary chips and salsa, but we had to ask for the white sauce--just something to keep in mind. I ordered the Burrito California as a bowl instead of in a tortilla, and they were happy to accommodate. My husband went for the Texas Burrito. Both dishes arrived quickly, were generously portioned, fresh, and flavorful. While it's not the best Mexican food I've had, the food was good, and the environment was nice. There is no wait time. Fast service. It is not as good as my favorite Mexican restaurant Food is a little on the greasy side when it is steak. Fajitas taco salad was just Ok. I have had a few things and it seems a bit smaller and I am always comparing it to my favorite place. There always seems to be one waiter and they have never been busy. When you don't see cars in the parking lot and it is not busy inside that usually means they are not that good and we have a lot of Mexican restaurant in this area. It is a big restaurant. We have tried them a few times because the first time we went was not great. I like their white sauce for dipping but their salsa is a bit bland and they have thick chips and they toast them a bit to much. Well the best thing I can say is that they can improve and I will be happy to hopefully increase stars just because they are the closest to our house. Good Mexican restaurant!! This restaurant is still fairly new. We came to check it out for dinner and it was pretty empty. This is a pretty big restaurant, lot of tables available so bigger parties would have no issue. We came with friends so there was about 15 of us. Boring and I have never had tacos served like this. Never! A piece of fish in a tortilla with everything on the side. And it was very bland and fishy at the same time....if that makes sense. Like most of the time, this was an unplanned dinner with my wife while we're out running errands. She knows I love Mexican food, so she suggested stopping at Gan Maya. 1st of all, this is not your typical Mexican restaurant we have here in Virginia Beach. I know this because they do not serve that funky white sauce with the chips. That is so popular around here and only here. On the bright side, their salsa was very fresh. You could definitely taste they had not been sitting around in a large container for days. For dinner, I was craving seafood. I know right why go to a Mexican restaurant. Well, it was a great decision. I had the Enchiladas El Amigo. Which was 3 Enchiladas filled with grilled shrimp crab meat onions and tomatoes topped with cheese sauce. Kind of sounds like an odd combination, and everyone says do not serve cheese with your seafood. I'm telling you that was an excellent meal. On top of that, even though we showed up late, the service was outstanding. We never felt rushed and were able to enjoy our meal. Growing up out west, I'm always on the search for some good Mexican food. So, considering this is probably the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had in Virginia Beach, I will be returning Many times in the future and I would most definitely recommend this restaurant unless you're really in to that funky white sauce. read more

This restaurant opened on October 5, 2020 and is located where the Applebee's used to be on General Booth Blvd. From the beginning of the year until opening, you could see them working on getting the place set up and built, inside and out, even during a pandemic. My first visit here was on October 5, 2020 (opening day). If you were in here when it was still Applebee's years ago, the setup in here was very similar, with the bar in the middle of the restaurant and seating all around. The décor inside is good as well. We came in around 4 pm that day, so it wasn't that busy at the time and were immediately greeted when we came in and then seated. Like most other Mexican restaurants, within seconds of being seated, someone came over with chips, salsa, and white sauce. Our server, who was Sofia, came over just after that. She introduced herself and asked us for our drink orders. We both went with tea. After bringing the drinks, she asked if we were ready to order, but weren't quite ready yet for entrées, but we did order a cheese dip appetizer. A few minutes later, our server came over with the cheese dip and we were ready to order. I ended up going with the Burrito Loco with Chicken and my mom ordered the Chimichangas (soft) with beef. About 8 to 10 minutes later, our orders came to the table. The food looked good and it was hot. The Burrito Loco was really good and had some good flavor to it as well. My mom enjoyed her chimichangas as well. We were both definitely full by the time we were done. Overall, we had a great experience on opening day. The food and service were great and will definitely visit in the future. I do want to note that I asked if they take competitor coupons like some other Mexican restaurants in the area and they said they do not. If you are in the General Booth and Dam Neck area of Virginia Beach and looking for a Mexican place, this place is worth checking out. read more

My mother love Love LOVES this place, but we went the other day and my stomach had a terrible reaction to it. I asked her about it and she said that she has that problem EVERY time she goes??? But she says the tummy problems are worth how good it is. She gets the Pollo Vallarta and my dad gets Pollo Tropical and they both swear by it. Just had lunch here and ordered the steak burrito bowl. The waiter brought the usual tortilla chips and dip which were good but the chips were a little on the stale side but not bad. Ordered a small dos equis draft and was surprised because it looked like about 20 oz. Not a huge problem but the price was over $6 so thought that was a bit much. The Entree is why I give them 5 stars because it was VERY delicious and included a full sliced avocada and a generous portion of great tasting steak which is often not the case at a Mexican restaurant. Getting the bill took a little longer then i liked but then saw my waiter taking out an order to go and the manager stepped in to assist.
