Again, another WIN finding a great place with Yelp! The 3 of us shared a homemade cinnamon roll that was so sinfully good! My son's favorite was their special of the day, Eggs Benedict. He said it was SO GOOD! Hubby had polish sausage and eggs with sourdough toast and my custom made omelette was delish! Listed below are the few reasons why one star is given. 1. We came in and waited to be seated as they cleaned a table for us which in any ways a bad thing. Once seated we were given a small paper thinking it was the menu but it wasn't. The waiter who took our drink order came back with our drinks and just left. Myself and another person I was with had ordered coffee so we wanted to see if we could get creamer and honey. Finally after 5 minutes, the waiter came back and once we asked for creamer, he left and then came back without even listening to what we still had to ask. He came and dropped the creamer off and then left again when we tried to ask for honey. Finally he came back and we was able to ask for honey. I use honey in my coffee instead of sugar. 2. After getting our coffee we just sat there trying to get someone to come over cause we didn't have menus and wanted to see where could get some. We've been sitting there for 15 minutes without menus and nobody had come over to take our order or give us menus. I had seen an elderly couple come in and sit down roughly 20 minutes of us getting there, who was given menus and had ordered their food before before we was even waited on. I had gotten up and went and asked the elderly couple for their menus since they were done with them. 3. I'm one of those people who likes to time how long it takes for our food to come out after ordering. A little weird yes, but it's been a weird habit of mine since I was young. My older sister and I would bet how long it would take for our food to come out so it's something I just kept doing as I got older. Well after we ordered, it took 53 minutes for our food to come out!!! We sat there and watched a table of 4 come in after us, order, get their food, eat and then started to leave before we got our food. I can understand if our party was big but it wasn't. It was just 4 of us. 4. I ordered the country fried steak in eggs cause I saw it in some of the pictures here on yelp and it looked really good. Once it came out and I started to eat it, my mind changed really quickly to one of "oh this looks so good" to "oh my god, I'm gonna throw up". A little harsh but it's the truth. It was under cooked and the texture of it was repulsive. It was so gooey and had chunks of like nuts in it. I don't suggest getting that. 5. The food was really bland and just blah. I love small diners like this because it's normally local people running them and the food is on point but this one just doesn't cut it. All of our food was just bland and nasty. The only good thing we had was the pancakes and that's saying a lot cause we got toast without butter. I won't be back here anytime soon. Maybe if they had better customer service then I would but the staff was not friendly. It's just a shame because small restaurants like this are normally the best ones to go to but not this one. This is a small-town dump only in a good way. I say that with a smile on my face and a chuckle in my throat. Grandpa's harkens back to the types of dinners you would have found on old Route 66. When I am traveling through Kingman Arizona at breakfast time, I am a sucker for Grandpa's Chicken Fried Steak or Chicken. The portions are ridiculously large--I can never finish. I think they revoked my membership to the clean plate club--I can never finish. A typical plate consists of an 8-ounce pounded flat steak, a pile of hashed browns, 3 eggs and a choice of toast or biscuits. All of this is smothered in one of the best sausage gravies I've ever tasted. The prices at low and budget busters. The last time I was there it was the week before Christmas. The place was decorated with all sorts of fun signs and decorations that put the well-trained staff into even a more engaging holiday group of people. So glad I yelped this time, I didn't want to go to some big chain restaurant and I didn't want to drive another hour west to end up unhappy w a meal. Yeah it's out of the way and really not much going on around Kingman. But not oh boy oh boy Wally this was it! We both were very satisfied w our meals. Good service and clean too. Lots of locals... only thing is I was ready to go to my car and retrieve my Nescafé instant coffee, cuz the coffee was a smidge weak. Other than that it was a five meal. Came here with my family expecting to have a great American style breakfast and decent service. The breakfast was average but the service left bitter aftertaste. The whole family (4) noticed how the host was nice with "regulars" or old people as well as her coworkers. But we didn't feel welcome. We stopped here on our way from Las Vegas to Flagstaff and wow! We were glad we did! Everything we ordered for breakfast was perfect including the coffee. It reminded us of a mom and pop place back east that we love. The bacon was the tastiest bacon I have ever eaten in a restaurant. And the serve real maple syrup with their fluffy pancakes. That is important to us. We also like half n half in our coffee as they serve as opposed to the non dairy creamers in most. Elaina, our waitress was cheerful and always back with more coffee. Service was good, the ambience was the typical diner table chairs . The food however was not great and that's reason for one star..... my wife ordered chicken fried steak and eggs. The steak was still raw in the middle. I ordered an omelette with hash browns and English muffin, the omelette seems like it was dipped in some type of oil. The hash browns were soggy. I go through Kingman every month or so, and am tired of so-so chain restaurant breakfasts. So happy to have found Grandpa's Kitchen. It's like walking into the kitchen table area of your grandpa's place (if he had a large kitchen). I went in at Christmas time and the whole place was decked out with cute decor pieces with a Christmas theme. Even the coffee mugs were all different Christmas pictures and sayings. The staff there is friendly and welcoming. They stop to talk with guests so don't be in a big hurry. Just enjoy a cup of their robust coffee and relax. The food is really delicious. I had a fantastic omelette and my husband had the chicken fried chicken. Both dishes were hot and fresh and really tasted good. The gravy on his biscuits was not that gloppy stuff you get at the chain restaurants... it was a creamy flavorful gravy that was the perfect accompaniment to the dish. Great little family run diner. They cut all their own meat so everything is fresh. Try the chicken fried steak. You won't be able to finish it. You can have breakfast or lunch. The chili size was a huge portion with fresh made chili and a mountain of cheese. The special today was a machaca burrito which was amazing. Tons of shaved roast beef, cheddar cheese, green chilies, and salsa. The home fries were very good and homemade. Not sure about the french fries. I don't know if they were homemade but definitely not enough salt. Those were the only thing that needed improvement, everything else was fabulous. Waitresses were so attentive. This is one of those places you probably would drive right by without a second thought. Yes it is a little off the beaten path but worth searching it out. Service: very friendly and helpful server. Wanted decaf and they made a fresh pot instead of using the last drop in the pot. Food: 2 perfectly cooked eggs over medium, with great crispy hash brown potatoes (amazing how many places can't cook crispy has browns), and nice crusty corn beef hash. The wheat toast was nice because it was the type with grain on the crust and toasted perfectly. Wife had the omelet which they let you build your own by choosing which ingredients you want to add to a regular cheese omelet. Wife loved it. Service sucks!!! The younger waitress isn't a people person and doesn't come off as nice. She didn't refill our drinks at all. She was talking a lot to her coworkers instead of doing her job. The older waitress Kathy didn't check up on us see if we needed anything and our drinks were still empty. When we first got there we waited for the waitress to finish her long conversation before taking our order. Food was delicious. Can't complain about the food at all just service sucks!!! I loved this place! I just got done hiking Havasupai and this was my first meal after eating camp food for four days and three nights! I was out of the canyon by 7am so I knew I wanted breakfast. This was on my way home so I decided to stop. It was kinda off the freeway a bit but totally worth it. I got your basic egg, hash brown, toast and a side of ham breakfast. I did not know the ham would be that big! I eat a lot but I couldn't even finish it! Lol. Everything was delicious and it definitely hit the spot after that backpacking trip.
