I'm not a big fan of dining Al fresco, but given the current hardship we are all enduring with Covid- 19 there is no other diing out alternative at the moment. The tables were adequately spaced and the full menu was available. This is my first time eating here and the food was pretty good. The service right off the bat was excellent. The staff was very attentive and always made sure our coffee and waters were topped off. We ordered the pastrami reuben, tuna melt, green omlette, breakfast eggs with sausage and a grilled cheese sandwich; classic sides of french and sweet potato fries and hash browns completed our meals Everyone was very happy with their meal and commented how delicious everything was. The fries were served up hot and crispy. The omlette was cooked perfectly, moist with that semi spongy custardly texture that made our palette very happy. The tuna melt was delicious and the pastrami had that perfect lean to fat ratio. Hopefully dining in will soon be here sooner than later. Great food, service and prices makes this diner a must visit. Staff makes it a priority to get to know "Regulars" - we don't even have to put our drink orders in; I'm serious - this is a rarity in this day and age. It pains me to write this but such a disappointing experience. We were sat down and did not know we could not bring our pup, (FYI we see dogs here ALL the time). He appeared to be the manager, or rather just had a button down on- but rudely approached us with no hello or anything and told us we needed to leave after asking if it was a service dog (it's not). He could not have been any unfriendlier, we are locals and have been dining here since it was Fredericks! Mind you, we were practically sitting on the curb, not next to the brick wall, ON THE CURB! French toast smelled like mop water, wife didn't eat, sausage was ok, omelette tasted weird, toast felt like it was stale and home fries were rubbery! Coffee was absolutely horrible and weak! Truly a great diner. Unfortunately folks I didn't get a chance to take any pictures but I had to still post review for this diner solely based onto the friend and welcoming staff and on the breakfast ordered to go. My go to order to measure the quality of any diner is the corn beef hash with over easy eggs and of course with home fries and this place didn't disappoint. The home fries were thinly sliced instead of chucks like most diners and this was brilliant. Having thinly sliced potatoes allow the potatoes to be crispier during the increased surface area on the grill with the same amount of cook time. Just brilliant. Now onto corn beef, where it too was thinly sliced one could only get only it if was real beef. Unlike other diner where the corn beef are all mush with the consistency one get out of a can and could be any processed beef. So this is truly a great diner given the quality of the food on such a staple diner dish. The only thing I had wish was I got a chance to try was their split pea soup but unfortunately went on a Wednesday and they only sever it on a Thursday. I don't normally start out with a four star review but when your first visit is great, it's easy. I was immediately greeted by a smiling and friendly Rorie. This is definitely a fun, happy, bright, smiling establishment. I came in for breakfast and was so happy with my dining experience here. I was greeted by my waiter as soon as a sat down. The water and coffee was brought to me within seconds. There attention to detail and customer satisfaction was very noticeable. Plenty of big groups coming in and quickly assisted. A simple order of scrambled eggs, potatoes and sausage was perfect. (See photo) Not always an easy task as too many times do I get this simple dish that's just not that good. But here, it is terrific. What really caught my attention though was everybody walking in knew everybody that was here it just seems like one big family gathering place. I'm sorry this diner is not closer to my house as it could easily be a regular spot. I do know that I'll come back one evening for dinner since everything just looks so good here and there was plenty to choose from on their menu. read more

My FIL lives in Great Neck so we have been frequenting this diner for years. They recently has a lobster roll special which hit the spot. Lots of outdoor spaces available. The sandwiches are generous sizes so you can eat half there and take half home. read more

We eat breakfast here whenever we're in Great Neck. I had a craving for banana pancakes and bacon. My boyfriend wanted Challah French toast and bacon. It was absolutely the best we've ever had. The pancakes are generous in size and taste. They didn't skimp on the banana content. The bacon wasn't dry. The French toast was flavorful. I wrote a review once upon a time but since then I've become a regular and figured my favorite diner deserves an extra star. What I love is that it's family run, and the staff is just amazing. They get to know you by name and even know my order by heart. It's always such a pleasant experience dining-in or ordering to take home. The food is your standard diner food - burgers, eggs, etc.. - and it's always fresh and good. The management cares about the employees and the customers, and it's always a pleasure to stop in. Diner was packed for lunch on a Sunday but service was good and food came out promptly. The space wasn't very big so be prepared for a squeeze. I had "The works" omelette which came with bacon, ham, sausage, peppers, mushrooms onions and cheese with multi grain toast and salad instead of potatoes. A historic staple in Great Neck, we had a great lunch here! First, you cannot go here without recognizing that the patrons must go here frequently. People all knew one another and were chatting with each other and the waitstaff as old friends. The servers were attentive, and kind. Our coffee cups were filled constantly and our used dishes cleared quickly. Servicev was excellent. The menu? So many offerings. We shared a pastrami sandwich, and spinach pie with Greek salad. Both came with cups of soup (mushroom barley and yankee bean, both great). The food was delicious. I work nearby but had not been here in ages. I am going to come back often. Had a nice lunch at this busy diner. Everyone was very friendly. Service is fast and efficient. Chicken salad sandwich and chicken caesar wrap were both very good. I went here with my wife after her physical therapy appointment across the street. Excellent food and very generous portions. Doesn't feel like you are at a typical Long Island restaurant. Maybe because it's not as big and it has outdoor seating which I thought was pretty cool.. I had the chicken noodle soup and turkey platter. My wife had a Thanksgiving panini. I'm surprised more diners don't have this type of panini. We took a large piece of chocolate fudge cake to go. Ever since we moved to Great Neck two and half years ago, this family friendly diner had become our regular place to visits. The reason we dine here is because the variety of dish choices and, most importantly, the atmosphere. The menu includes breakfast, brunch( like you have omelette and florentines, at the same time you have choice of various burgers, sandwiches, and steaks), dinner, deserts, are all there for you to pick, however and whatever the choice you feel fit for the moment. Although the pace of waiters and waitresses seems fast, and the sounds of utensils, plates, and people greeting and chatting, are in your ear all the time, the smells of fresh made western omelette, toasts, coffee, and the smells of crunchy bacon in the air... a great family diner should sound and smell about! My new (to me) neighborhood diner. Overall, I like this place and am happy to have a diner so close to my home, but there are a few "meh" feelings I have. The food is good here. I've had chicken wraps that were great, fries that are SOOO good and even their lumberjack breakfast platter (so much fooooood). My only qualm is that they are on the pricier side for a diner. I guess it's because it's Long Island? I don't know... I just feel they're a bit overpriced. The other thing that irks me is their hours. I've never encountered a diner that opens at 7am and closes at 8pm. I guess they must not have a need to be open super early, but I can't imagine a restaurant that serves dinner to not be open at least until 10pm. Very odd to me, but oh well! I'll still frequent this diner as long as I'm living around the area, so yeah. PS: The service is always great though, so very happy about that! read more

Filling, healthy, and possible to substitute the fries and toast with a green salad. - the ambiance is actually awesome. The decor is elegant and the place is clean. Cons: - the minestrone soup tasted like it was Campbell's. - the huevos rancheros were disgusting. No one should suffer through that big goopy mess! - coffee was subpar and lukewarm. - very crowded. First the good news: The service was excellent. Right from the moment we walked in, the staff was attentive and super helpful. We wanted a booth, but none was available, so they cleaned and set one up immediately while the people who had just vacated it were up and paying. When the people who had sat there came back for a second and put their backpack on the table, on his own the waiter immediately replaced the silverware he had just laid down for us because the backpack had been right next to it. During the meal, we were offered coffee refills many times. They really went out of their way to offer great service. If only the food had measured up! Between the mistakes and the mixups, it was almost comical. My husband ordered hot chocolate and carefully specified NO whipped cream. His drink came with a heaping mound of whipped cream. Our simple breakfast orders were so completely mixed up that we weren't sure whether what we received was even ours. I ordered scrambled eggs well done, with bacon and home fries, also well done. What I received was over easy eggs, bacon, and underdone home fries. My husband got my well-done scrambled eggs instead (which he didn't order). Although we had both asked for the home fries to be well done, only his were. The staff was quick to put in a new order for me, but the kitchen just could not get it right. The next batch of scrambled eggs was not well done but gross and undercooked. They took the eggs back again, which reappeared next as tiny little brown chopped up bits that tasted like grill oil. I didn't eat them, but gave up asking them to fix it. Three wrong tries were just too many. The thing is, I've been ordering my scrambled eggs well done in diners for over 30 years, and until now, no one has ever had a problem making them. (It just means keeping them on the grill for an extra minute or two so that they are not gooey.) As for the rest of the food, the bacon was good, as were the pancakes. The home fries were pretty tasteless. The coffee was weak but passable. I usually love eating in Long Island diners, some of which are outstanding, and with the super-attentive staff, I was expecting to love this one too. All l can guess is that the good food reviews here came from days when the person who cooked our food was not in the kitchen. read more

After over a year away, it felt so good to be back at the GND. The owner welcomed us once again with open arms (he is also one of the friendliest men you will ever meet). We ate outdoors - the setup was beautiful and expansive. All necessary COVID safety precautions were being taken seriously and responsibly by all. The food was delicious. We ordered the lobster roll and chicken/cheese quesadilla, which was all to die for. The portions were huge and we were so stuffed that we had to bring dessert home. And the moment the level dipped by an inch or so, there the server was with more if I wished it. It was a simple and quick lunch for me: the BLT with fries. The sandwich, on whole grain, was perfect in terms of amount of bacon - not overwhelming and thereby keeping me righteous - right thickness of tomato, fresh greens, not too much mayo. The fries: what do they do with them? Crispier than I've had in a long time and not needing any salt. AND - THE SERVICE? I'VE NEVER, EVER HAD BETTER. Attentive, quick, polite, pro-active. PERFECTION. Mimosas are worth it here! Delicious and large glass size for a good bang for the buck. French dip wasn't very good and bread was a bit soggy, but the fires were amazing!
