Rude service, little portions, food not good.. I ordered garlic shrimp that came with no garlic and more vegetables than shrimp. On the menu it said garlic shrimp came with green beans and onions, but what I got was broccoli Tomatoes cauliflower green beans and a little bit of shrimp and no garlic. When I called she said they would not replace with what I ordered but that she had garlic she could throw in there. No thanks. Waste of money. read more

Here is another gem that is super unique. We go here all the time and have never had a bad dish. Killer flavors. Unique ingredients. Dishes not found on any other menu in the area. We almost walked by this place on our way to the Chinese place we have gone to for years. Totally glad we didn't. The menu contains food you don't normally find. The owner is from Burma and as a result she had dishes that run from eastern India all the way to Thailand and Vietnam. Being Mostly Vegan and totally Gluten Free, there are very few things that I can eat at any restaurant. I am delighted to say that not only does she have a full vegetarian menu, but many of her plates are gluten free with or without meat. Awesome! As a bonus, my daughters were in the candy store she has set up in the adjacent storefront space. Try the chocolate covered honeycomb. Pretty darned good... Great place to stop on way to/from Tahoe. It was a quick, reasonably-priced meal, not too far from highway 80. Too bad they aren't open Sundays as that's likely one of our travel days on most Tahoe trips. We enjoyed a lunch of tea leaf salad, samosas, mussaman beef curry with rice, a chicken/coconut/lemongrass soup, and an extra order of white rice for our kids who can never get enough refined carbs. There aren't many places that offer this Burmese tea leaf salad, so for me, it's a real treat. My son, having heard we were to be lunching at a Burmese place, was salivating over the thought of roti prata, but alas there was none on the menu. The Green Elephant is an owner/operator business. The food is first class but plan on a slow and relaxing experience. That said, the wait is always worth it. The "no hurry" approach guarantees the food will be well prepared. Just make sure you call first to make sure they are open. This was our first visit to Green Elephant. The restaurant is in a small strip mall off King Street. Not much to look at from the outside, but upon entering, we were surprised to find a very small but inviting & intimate setting. The owner seems to also be the waiter & server; a one-woman show? She was very gracious about answering all our questions about the menu. The menu has a variety of choices and all seemed appetizing! We tried the Thai fried rice and the garlic prawns along with some tom ca soup. It was all unique and delicious. I also tried the ginger tea & loved it! We were anxious to try this restaurant after trying Burmese food in Berkeley. This is the ONLY Burmese restaurant I could find in the area. Wow - incredible food!
