Just finished getting our annual supply of mandarin oranges in nearby Newcastle and looked at Yelp Ap to find the closest place to grab lunch and Green Elephant popped up. Place was not busy at 12:30 on a cold and rainy day. The hot chicken soup that came with lunch hit the spot with it yummy gingery flavor. We ordered the Pad Thai which came steamy hot. Just had lunch here so time for a review update. First off, NO FOOD is microwaved here... a person just posted a short/ stupid review accusing this. I know this for a fact, no food is microwaved. The lunch specials are great. I love the chili jam chicken so much, it's hard to choose another dish.... but the beef basil & curry dishes are great too. I also like their pad prik khing with chicken. Your lunch comes with jasmine rice & a lumpia. Again, the lumpia is deep fried, not microwaved :-) Also comes with a bowl of chicken soup. Great value. There are lots of vegetarian & gluten free dishes also. They will customize the dishes to your taste. I recommend the tea leaf salad. Amazing. For dessert, the deep fried banana (kinda like a tempura banana) with vanilla ice cream is sooo good! This restaurant is a hidden gem, you would expect to find in SF, LA, or NYC. This is comfort food! Saucey, warm, tasty, satisfying. Ordered the Burmese Garlic Shrimp which has large pieces of shrimp that were perfectly cooked and had the perfect crunch when you bit into it. The sauce was on the sweet side but sooo flavorful and garlicky, you'll definitely want to eat it with rice. We also ordered the Burmese Beef. My friends loved it but it was ok to me. I also ordered Laksa because I love anything with coconut milk and I've heard about it from my friends who have had authentic laksa in Asia. It was beautifully creamy and smooth, but on the bland side. Of course we had the Tea Leaf Salad, which was pretty to look at and had a good variety of crunchy toppings, but was missing an acidic component to me, like a freshly squeezed lemon would have been great. If I hadn't tried Burma Superstar in San Francisco and Oakland, I'd probably rate this place much higher. But overall, it's good for the palette, the belly and the wallet! read more

This place is great. Honestly... the food is delicious and the staff go above and beyond to make your experience the best. We had a group of 6 of us (2 of them children). The big boys ordered the normal beer they get when at an asian restaurant (and one of them is a proclaimed beer connoisseur). The waitress (owner) recommended a Thai beer and told us that she only carries one specific Thai beer as it is the most favorite of all of the patrons. I have to say her recommendation was amazing. I don't really drink beer but this one was fantastic and I had to get one myself. We were not sure what to order for the kids so she made a few recommendations and when the food came out both kids were very happy with our choice. They have great sushi options as well as delicious hot dishes. If you're in the area I highly recommend this place and don't forget to order the Thai beer. read more

The single best reason to use Yelp is to find hidden gems. Anyone can learn about a great restaurant in Sacramento, but without Yelp, it would be nearly impossible to find out about a great restaurant in, say, a place like Loomis, because how many people think to themselves "I'm hungry. Let's go to Loomis!" unless they are already in Loomis, and/or they have a friend whose name is Loomis, and he is a good cook. But even if I were in Loomis, it's not as if this place has bright neon lights and arrows pointing at it. This is a tough place to find. So I'm glad it showed up on Yelp, because this is exactly the kind of place I tend to love: - Great food and service - Interesting cuisine - Not popular. I'm not exactly a food hipster (a foopster?), but it is much more fun to enjoy a restaurant that not everyone in your geographic area has enjoyed. Green Elephant went above and beyond. I don't have their menu on hand to point to their best meals, but they had a version of Phad Thai that is exactly the way I expect Phad Thai to taste (I order it with tofu and no bean sprouts), as well as Laksa Noodle Soup, which was simple but delicious. My lady ordered something too that she adored, but I can't remember what it was. The owners here were great. They were very friendly and talking to everyone, telling them about their restaurant and their food. They were smiling and genuine, and clearly relaxed. Since moving up from the Bay Area 2 years ago I have been coming back to green elephant weekly and I have never been let down. I've eaten at top Burmese / Thai places all over San Jose and the whole SF Bay Area and Green Elephants quality, authenticity and overall experience beats them all. The owner is extremely hospitable and makes the best roti I've ever had. My go to order is Chicken potato curry, 3 orders Roti, tea leaf salad, samosa and Thai tea. The chicken potato curry is incredibly savory and goes perfect with the roti. Also, get a small side of sugar sprinkle on the roti to turn it into a warm doughy dessert! Overall best it's the best south Asian style cuisine I've ever had ( every time I go elsewhere I wish I didn't ) and every dish tastes homemade. The owner of the restaurant is very nice but also looked a bit nervous since she noticed we know what South East Asian food should taste like. TL;DR Probably the best place I've tried in Rocklin so far! Plus, Burmese food that you don't have to run to the Bay to get - SCORE! Was looking up places to eat in Rocklin for dinner tonight and came across this gem because of their tea leaf salad. I immediately began reminiscing about the salads I had tried in Burmese restaurants in the Bay and ushered my whole family out to try this place with me. It's a fairly small restaurant with some extra room in the back for large parties, we arrived around 6:30pm and were seated immediately. The atmosphere inside is pretty cute with a lot of gold elephant and owl decor + really green wallpaper, so it's definitely aptly named haha We ordered four Shrimp Tempura, the Fried Calamari, the Mussaman Curry with Beef, the Mee-Go-Rang, Fried Catfish, and the Thai Hot Pepper Soup with Catfish. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD. I think my favorite thing was the Mee-Go-Rang or the Tea Leaf Salad. Food I Tried: Shrimp Tempura: Eh, skip it - unless you're feeling it - it's pretty much standard tempura but with a sweet chili dipping sauce instead of the usual. $1.50 each! Fried Calamari: THIS TASTES LIKE MOZZARELLA STICKS. Must be magical seasoning. It's got a few little peppers on top and is served with another chili dipping sauce - very tasty starter and would get again for sure. Thai Hot Pepper Soup: This is one of those "warmth from within" soups - it's definitely spicy but tastes very brothy - it's got vermicelli noodles, mushroom along with catfish. Would recommend for a cold or for someone looking for lighter fare. Tea Leaf Salad: The salad didn't taste exactly like the ones I'd had before and it came mixed already, but it tasted pretty similar and was still delicious! Had all the typical fixings along with some things I wasn't super familiar with! Mee-Go-Rang: A chow mein noodle dish in masala curry, our server told us. It's served with an egg on top and has little bits of potato, chicken and onions in it, and you squeeze a fresh lime on top before eating it. Tastes like comfort food - super good! Mussaman Curry with Beef: Meeps I ordered this and I'm disappointed in myself LOL I wasn't a huge fan of it - my sister really liked it though. I felt that there wasn't enough curry and the beef, while being slow cooked, tasted a little more tough than what I would have liked. Flavor wise it worked though and it was served with peanuts and potatoes. Fried Catfish: Kind of like eating fish and chips LOL but the dipping sauce was good and the catfish was fried pretty well, nothing to write home about but it was decent. All the food came out in little bursts, so we started with the tempura, then the calamari, and then the soup and mains. The plates look small but the portions are filling! It all came out "family style" but portion wise you would probably want to order a dish per person still. There was only one lady manning all the tables and I was pretty impressed with how attentive she was. It got pretty busy toward the end and she was still keeping the flow going at every table very smoothly! Price wise it's around $10-13 per dish, pretty reasonable prices. I think for everything we ordered the bill came out to be $70ish? I don't remember the exact price but we were also pretty hungry so I think we'd order less next time LOL I mean we had four dishes, three appetizers... it's around $17.50 per person, not including tax/tip. Definitely gonna come back for dessert! We were way too full to even entertain the option but if the entrees and appetizers are any indication, dessert's gonna be worth it. It's well worth the trip out to Rocklin to try this place! Would totally recommend, great service and excellent food! ** Updating to take off one star, I called in a few times to make a reservation and was told that there would be plenty of room and I didn't need to reserve (around 5:30PM). They also stated for future reference that they do NOT take reservations due to the size of the restaurant. I said okay, but I was a little annoyed no one had called back in the first place. I had a party of five people and I really wanted to show them the great food, so we arrived around 7PM that night and were told that it would be an hour and a half wait. They're a small restaurant and I get that, I'm more disappointed because I couldn't get a hold of the restaurant very easily, I called twice from 11-5:30PM and was never called back, I left messages both times. I understand that they got busy unexpectedly, so I was only a little bummed I couldn't show my friends this place, but also want to warn people to try to call ahead of time to get in touch in case it is too busy so you can find out. Found this place on yelp and we thought we would try it out. Like others said it is a little hole in the wall place in a strip mall, but once inside the owner makes you feel welcome and rig at home. She spent time talking about her menu and her recent trip to Burma. We ate the tea leaf salad, mango pickled pork and chili jam chicken. Served with jasmine rice and a tea that accompanied the tea leaf salad. Every dish was perfectly cooked and was absolutely delicious. This place is Burmese food with some Thai selections. The owner told us that if she just opened a Burmese place she would have no visitors because nobody knows about Burmese. You gotta go in and give it a try. I was curious about the reviews so I came here first to read about it, and saw that EVERY review was 5 stars! Well, now I know why. I can't believe I've been missing out for so long. I met Rachel, one of the owners, and she was so friendly, walked us through the menu, asked us the level of spiciness for our orders, was very attentive. The decor was very nice and it was clean. I love it here. The food is great and the prices are even better. I work and live nearby and love that I could come here for a quick lunch or a nice dinner. The second time I went this week was with some friends who are on a very specific vegan and no oil diet and the owner, who is wonderful, made something special just for them. Long overdue review. This place is wonderful and the owner is so nice. My husband and I moved from San Francisco and couldn't believe it when we found a Burmese restaurant that reminded us of the one we lived down the street from. My only "complaints" would be that sometimes people get turned away because she's just too busy so you have to make sure you go early in the evening. The other is that they ran out of the tea salad. There's a lot to like about Green Elephant: It's beautifully decorated, the owner is very nice, they have an extensive range of menu options to suit most appetites for some manner of Asian cuisine, and the prices are reasonable. They also gave us delicious chocolate-dipped strawberries for free, in honor of Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, my girlfriend and I found the food to be mediocre at best. Our first dish was our favorite, the Tom-Yan Kung Soup. We ordered the veggie version, so they replaced the chicken and quail egg with tofu, which was just fine. The soup had a nice lemon-grassy kick to it and had a nice assortment of vegetables. It was a little on the thin side, though. For our main course, we ordered two items: a noodle dish (the name of which escapes me... sorry, not helpful) and the mixed vegetables with coconut milk curry. The noodle dish was so-so; it reminded me of spaghetti with butter melted on it, with a few veggies mixed in. It was best when we mixed our aforementioned soup in with the noodles, to give them some flavor. As for the curry, I don't think it was actually a coconut milk variety: It was a thick, dark-brownish sauce. My girlfriend said it reminded her a Japanese style of curry. Whatever the case, it was disappointing - and the mushy broccoli and over-abundance of mushrooms and cabbage didn't help. Also, though the servers (one of whom was the owner) were nice, the service was a little pokey at times. There was hardly anyone there when we arrived for our 8:00 meal, but it took a surprising amount of time to get a menu, to give our order, and to pay. The tables around us, meanwhile, needed clearing. They may have been down a person that night, for all I know. So yeah: I don't anticipate coming back - but then, I rarely if ever make it out to Loomis anyway. Food was good but my less than one star comes from eating and getting grossed out by a small brown roach I had to smash with my napkin on my table. When I brought it to the waitresses attention she told me that they fumigate regularly but can't control infestation from neighbors who share same building. If roaches are crawling around in full view how bad can the infestation be in that storage were they keep the food. Brown small roaches carry deceases. This place needs to be inspected soon. I drove up to try this restaurant from Sacramento because I heard that they had a great tea leaf salad from a co-worker. My co-worker told me the food he had at the Thai restaurant and I knew it was a Burmese restaurant doing Thai dishes because of what he had. We came now again in February and were totally disappointed with the overall meal and service. Our son had the beef stew which was not edible due to being that salty. Went on a Tuesday evening and they were not crowded at all. As far as the authenticity goes, I am not Burmese so I can't tell you how authentic it was but I do have a very picky palate and this place has really great Tea Leaf Salad and the catfish thick soup was really good. The dessert was tapioca and coconut milk which was okay to me but I am just not a tapioca person. Also the samosas were delicious. I love the tea leaf salad and would make the drive out there again for more salad. Next time I would love to try other things. Great discovery on a business trip up to Loomis today! This place is tucked away in a dumpy little strip center and is a real jewel in the area. It's an excellent family business that is celebrating their one-year anniversary and I sure hope they're able to keep it going.
