I took her 6 week course on Herbal Healing for WOMBYN last spring while I was in another herbal apprenticeship program elsewhere. Julie James blew my mind with her knowledge and as soon as her enrollment opened for her one year apprenticeship program, I jumped at it. I wanted to expand my herbal studies, having focused on folk medicine rooted in the wise woman Tradition, I wanted to learn more and dive deeper in herbal medicine. She is such a wonderful mentor and is active in the herbal community, speaking at events like the Terra Vita Herbal Symposium & Good Medicine Confluence. I actually wanted to commute for the span of four months to take his course and he suggested based on knowing how difficult it could be getting there that I seek Julie James. I'm so glad that he pointed her my way as did a friend who had taken her course and the current teacher from another herbal program that I was in. If you want to learn about Herbalism and not the woowoo stuff then you will find your cup will spill over with knowledge that Julie speaks! She's amazing and makes amazingly yummy medicine! Heaven sent. Had one of the greatest shopping experience here. Almost everything is organic and you can feel the high vibration of the herbs. From jamaican castor oil, mushroom blends (reishi, cordyceps, lions mane) yoni herbs, sleep aid, stress aid products. Everything I needed they had in the store. I was blown away. If yoire visiting Long Beach, this is a shop I highly recommend, even if you dont know what to shop for. You will find something that will help you in your health and journey. The store was organized neatly but upon entering, the vibe with the person working seemed off. Not very friendly and welcoming at all. Discovered she's the store owner, which is surprising. I called a week prior and asked her a few questions over the phone. She seemed pretty knowledgeable. I asked her a couple questions at the counter and was willing to buy all that she had. She appeared to be uninterested and slightly annoyed with answering them. She also made a sidebar statement that she was done answering any more questions and it was close to her closing time and she needed to get home to her son. Wow. Ok. This was my first first time to her shop and meeting her. Not to mention, google maps takes you to her old location. That delayed us getting there sooner. It should be updated. She made sure to mention on the phone that she's been an herbalist for over 30 years. I would think, since you're a seasoned vet, you'd love to answer questions and help people. Especially if they are willing to purchase with you, at your store. Maybe she was in a bad mood that day, but I asked of a good detox and she promptly replied, oh I don't believe much into detoxes. I shut down at that point, since she mentioned she had many detox's over the phone. I bought a few items and left. I thought about going back to check to see if it was simply an "off day" for her, but my husband suggested I go to Los Angeles's, Simply Wholesome store next time. Bummer, since I live here in Long Beach. She is far more convenient. Customer service is important and I didn't feel much value as a customer from this lady. Perhaps this will help her do better with customers.Especially new ones. read more

Love this herbal paradise. This shop is well stock (bulk herbs, teas, tinctures, bath and body products, oils, etc.) and super cute! The staff is very knowledgeable and will even blend custom formulas for you. Lots of handmade ceramics and household items as well. Pricing is also very reasonable here. I have been wanting to come visit here for awhile now and finally made the trip up this past Monday. I have severely sensitive skin with bouts of eczema flaring up recently. Julie was so kind, she listened to my grievances and offered options to help calm my skin and build it back up to a healthy level. She has been an herbalist for over 30 years and she spoke her knowledge with passion and love. I have been putting to practice what she told me and am already seeing improvements. This class has something for every kind of learner- you could stick beginners next to more advanced students, students who want to know the scientific information with the students who was the historical lore, the tactile hands on learners with those who do better with straight facts, and you'd find that everyone would get what they are needing. I have taken many classes (I am about to leave for a class after I finish this review) with Julie and study with her as an apprentice. Julie is a phenomenal teacher and human being! She is straightforward, passionate, kind, generous, bold, authentic, extensively knowledgable, humble, passionate, engaging and gloriously human. She is obviously a master herbalist and chemist with an ability to transfer her love for learning, understanding, experiencing and honoring the world of plants that is rare and absolutely a pleasure to be in the presence of and absorb. She teaches and practices from the perspective of Western Herbalism with an understanding of some other perspectives as well. Her classes are relevant, fun, not too easy and not too hard (just right!) and full of wisdom and beauty. You can count on her to tell you what she knows and let you know when she doesn't. She is truly a being of service out to leave you empowered and informed. So here's the deal, if you are looking for someone and somewhere to get your feet wet or jump in full force into the world of herbalism you can't go wrong with Julie James and the Green Wisdom school/community. The owner and employee that was there last week were knowledgeable, polite and prices were reasonable. They also told me about classes.

Over the last fifteen or so years, we have become enmeshed in the SoCal herbal scene... i.e. we have been to a LOT of classes with a LOT of different practitioners / teachers. Some are definitely better than others in terms of their knowledge and ability, skills and personality. NONE are as well-versed in their subject matter than Julie James. She is unquestionably a subject matter expert in all things herb-y. Julie possesses a bottomless wealth of herbal knowledge - she knows the plant history, the plant chemistry, the plant processes, and contraindications for pretty much every plant used in Western Herbalism traditions. She is patient in teaching her students, and is such a joyful, pleasant person to be around. We've taken approximately a dozen or so stand-alone classes from her, all of which were amazingly clear and chock-full of great knowledge. I even took her version of a year and a day first level internship program, and although I could not complete it due to ongoing ill health, the classes I was able to attend were wonderful because not only is she a great resource, the class group itself was full of intellectually curious, passionate, like-minded students. It's a really great way to start off your weekend. Best of all, you do not just get 'talked at' during her classes... Julie makes every effort to take time for questions throughout classes, there is plenty of hands-on learning, samples of herbal products (e.g. tinctures, salves, glycerites, tea blends, and herbal foods) are readily available in every class for tasting and trying, and every class includes materials and herbs to take home, as part of the class fees! And let's talk about class fees. Julie's classes are ridiculously inexpensive for the value provided. Most of the classes we availed ourselves of were in the $20-$30/class range, for a minimum of two+ hours per class, plus myriad materials. Such a bargain for such knowledge! If you are lucky enough to live within a reasonable drive to Long Beach (or even North Hollywood, as she sometimes teaches up there as well), and you have a burgeoning desire to become more involved in your own health care or that of your loved ones and even pets in a natural format, you owe yourself the pleasure of getting to know Green Wisdom and the indomitable force behind it. She is SO good that in the first year internship class there were even people driving up from south San Diego County, far northern Los Angeles County, and even the IE - just for the privilege of participating in Julie's classes. If that isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. Some of her classes are directed toward people more inclined to create their own herbal businesses, and newcomers might surmise this would be off-putting to beginners or those with only a 'hobby-level' interest in herbalism. This would mostly describe us - and we can affirm that even 'newbies' or those only casually interested in obtaining herbal medicine knowledge still feel welcomed and comfortable in her classes. Given how important it is to know the what and why of things we keep around us and put into our bodies, there is no great educator in Southern California who can distill down the pertinent information and get you on a path toward life-long learning than Julie and her Green Wisdom community. Go check this place out! Within these walls lie an amazing herbal apothecary, an outstanding teacher in Julie James, and students passionate about supporting health with plants. Julie is a fabulous teacher. I took a class with her a few years ago and the time flew by, I knew I wanted more and so I spent the next two years taking every class she offered - best move ever! If you want to learn more about plants as healing allies Julie makes it incredibly easy to understand and she does a great job balancing the science and the spirit side of things, she doesn't get all woo woo on you, but allows space for it if that is what you like. My sister and I wanted to explore the Green Wisdom Herb Shop. The Shop was very well organized however; the vibe was off. I walked into the shop and noticed a rack of prepackaged herbs on the left hand side of the store. I stopped to see the types of herbs on the rack while my sister went to speak with the owner at the counter. No less than 1 minute one of the employees blocked the door way as if I was going to take off with the herbs bag. So I put the package back and walked over to the counter. I brush it aside thinking that she was doing work over there, but as my sister continued speak with the owner I decided to go back to the rack. AND THE EMPLOYEE DID IT AGING TELLING ME THAT SHE WAS BLOCKING THE WIND. I started to laugh. I then put the herbs back on the shelf. My sister and I bought a few items because the owner was very knowledgeable. After, we got home I started to regret buying the items. However, I would advise anyone of color please be mindful of where you do business. I WILL NOT GO BACK.. read more
