I have been here before but This time was a completely different experience. We go out to eat for the experience and typically because we don't want to cook. We were traveling back to the Bay and wanted to stop And relax and get something to eat before we hit traffic. This was the worst service we have ever had. Not only did we sit for the upside of 15 min before getting our drinks but after we ordered-we never saw our server again until the bill. Then we even sat for quite some time before she ever showed up. She Made us feel like we were bothering her.. never made eye contact never refilled drinks and even when we were checking with her bout leaving said thanks and vanished. Had Griff's cater for my wedding. First, the food was fantastic the small appetizers were to die for, especially the stuffed mushrooms. The prime rib was amazing, taking me to a Ritz-Carlton level of flavor town. Secondly, the service was one of the best I've ever had. Everyone serving the food was on it at all times, making sure we were well fed, our drinks were full, and we were having a good time. What a fantastic find this is! Fast friendly service, the food was so good and lots of it! I have had many Black & Bleu burgers and the one I got from here to night was by far the best ever! One friend had the pulled pork dinner with Mac n cheese and coleslaw and the other a 2 meat combo of pulled pork and bbq chicken with 2 sides, he really enjoyed the pulled pork and the juice it was in you can really taste the molasses! What a hidden gem along hwy 4 in Copperopolis! We were starving and decided to stop in after seeing the signs for Griff's along the highway for the past 2 years. Wow! The service was fabulous AND the food! My husband had the brisket sandwich on sourdough with a side of fries. Delicious! The meat was moist and tender, the fries were crispy and hot. I had the prime rib sandwich (special of the day) with coleslaw as the side. Both were stellar. This will be a new culinary stop on out way up Hwy 4. read more

I love this place... the décor is awesome with the huge wood door and the beams around the bar are really cool. The food is excellent and the service great... I have tried most everything on the menu but have recently tried to watch what I eat so I was pleasantly surprised that the cook, when asked, made me a chicken dish and a wonderful mushroom dish that were not on the menu and they were delicious and healthy! I thought about giving 2 stars for ambiance and sides only. The meat, ON THIS DAY, was horrid. Then I remembered I paid $82 for a horrible meal. My family and I found ourselves here on the recommendation of a local, and yelper, who read a previous review I had made on another BBQ place that turned out to be a bust. You see, I'm on a mission to find exceptional BBQ in California. So far, only a few come close to being called "great" BBQ. I've traveled far and wide to sample the different styles and techniques of California's most respected BBQ chefs, but only recently started Yelping about it. I respect the other reviewers' opinions, but Griff's missfired..badly. First the good: This place is beautifully decorated with antique mining equipment and gorgeous, reclaimed wood. There is beautiful photography of local scenery adorning the walls, and a great view of town square. The oversized front door is almost indescribable, like something out of a western movie - picture the front door on the largest ranch owned by the biggest cattle baron. That was this door. Very cool! Judging by the good reviews and glowing recommendation, I must have caught them on a bad day. And I have to admit, it was on a day the town held "Western Days" so there were a lot of people in town. The waitstaff were running ragged and I heard one explain the long wait was due to so many people and only 2 restaurants in town. Hmm. I passed at least 2 others on my way to Griff's so not sure what she was talking about. Plus their computers were down so that caused them some probs. I read other reviewers noting that happening during their visits at other times. Our waitress tried to keep up, but they were slammed. It made us not even want to ask for things (refills, ketchup, extra napkins, etc.) because she was working so hard to serve a ton of people. They may have been shorthanded. Oh, I failed to mention I drove 32 miles out of my way just to visit this place, so yes, I was expecting to be served real smoked BBQ. What I got were ribs so bland you could barely discern the type of meat. I'm not being hyperbolic either. Could've easily been mistaken for chicken. Not a hint of smoke and a very mild, almost transparently sweet rub of some sort. No smoke ring and no character. On the question of balance, there was none. I realize that your average jane and john doe like what I would call "bland" and "boring" food so with that said I can't fault a business for trying to appeal to the masses, if that's what they're doing. However, please do try to find some character would ya?? Chains like Famous Dave's and Dickie's do it with a bit of flair, though their mass-produced BBQ is only a shadow of the stuff from which these chains were born. Even the travesty that is Applebee's riblets have more character than Griff's ribs. On a positive note the ribs, while bland, had the right amount of tender. Hint: chewy is bad, as is meat falling off the bone! Ribs should be tender but have teeth, which these did. And as far as i could tell they were back ribs. For the price, and for the flavor, I would've preferred st. louis. As for the brisket - what a shame. This is perhaps the sole reason for my poor review. If anyone is fooled by day-old, overcooked and then reheated brisket, they deserve to eat it. After taking my first bite, the look on my face must've said it all. It had a strange, acrid flavor that I initially suspected was oversmoke or maybe lighter fluid. My daughter asked to try it so I gave her a bite. She said, "eww it tastes like plastic!" And she nailed it. All I can think that would cause that flavor and that texture would be day old (or longer) leftovers wrapped in Saran Wrap that were heated too long in the microwave such that the plastic melted onto the meat. That would definitely explain both the texture and the bad flavor. Shame on Griff's for trying to pass this off onto paying customers! As mentioned I did like the sides, however, the onion rings, potato salad, and even Mac and cheese were good. But I didn't come here for them. I came for real smoked BBQ meat ... and was utterly disappointed by what I was given. Was this debacle caused by the large group of people in from out of town? Look, slow smoked BBQ is very difficult to produce in mass quantities - I get that. But there are methods for anticipating crowds (for an annual event scheduled in advance, for example) and then preparing larger quantities of meat. For heaven's sake, don't serve people crap that tastes like overcooked microwaved pot roast with a hint of plastic. I would've rather the waitress said, "sorry we sold out of brisket, try our pulled pork instead." I wasted $82. I do hope for their sake this was an anomaly. read more

Griff's is a great restaurant. We have tried many dishes there. One of our favorite things to order are the hamburgers. Quality meat and homemade buns make it delicious. I only wish they were open later. Sometimes we feel as if we are being rushed. read more

Recently, hubby and I ate at Griff's BBQ in Copperopolis. I was in the area for work, so we decided to go for dinner. The servers were nice enough, though I'm not sure who was ours. There were 3 different young ladies that came to our table, so not sure who will get the tip we left. We liked the atmosphere of deep pit smoky BBQ, however the food was mediocre for the high price. Nothing bad, but nothing stellar. Hubby had the brisket plate. The meat was fork tender and flavourful, but not well trimmed. The slices had rather large chunks of gristle and fat on them. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The meat was flavourful, but had some large fatty chunks as well. The sourdough bread was good, but got soggy very fast since it wasn't toasted. The fried pickles are okay, but got really greasy after about 2 minutes. The homemade bbq sauce is quite good though, and the side of cole slaw was fresh. Overall, we are glad to have tried it, and might go again to try other items if we're in the area. But I wouldn't drive there just for the food. For us, the food is expensive for what it is. read more

Was seated, but then sat around waiting for menus for about 10 minutes without any acknowledgement from staff. Finally left because we were so hungry. One waitress literally running around. Not a fan, which is probably good for them as I'm sure I won't be driving through here again probably ever. I got the 6 ribs, which the highlight was that the meal was huge. Also, the restaurant is very nice in a really nice shopping like area. However, my ribs were definitely not anything special, if not borderline old. I'm not saying my ribs were spoiled but they were probably only a day away from being so. The seasoning on the ribs wasn't dry but wasn't really wet either, almost a mixture and came with no sauce, which is fine. But the seasoning was not good enough and really left a lot to be desired. The corn bread mini was good, but that orange butter has got to go. Butter has been tried, whipped butter, honey butter, maybe even some cinnamon butter but there is a reason orange butter hadn't taken off. I appreciate the desire to be different but let's work on the main courses first. The onion rings, while plentiful and fried outside perfectly, were undercooked inside. The beans, which would the star and still had a great flavor, were undercooked as well. One of the beans (it's a 2 bean mix) was still crunchy. All in all and big fail here with the inability to get any part of the meal right except the little corn bread. read more

Love having this place so close to home. We have been multiple times and always have great service and delicious food. You can pretty much tweak anything to how you like it. My husband loves to make his onion rings in to parmesan garlic onion rings. Food is hot and cooked perfect every time. Never ever had a problem here, even on their extremely busy days. read more

I went here with my boyfriend a few months ago. We don't live in the area but my boyfriend owns a home in Tulloch. We didn't want to cook one evening and decided to go out for dinner. Griff's showed up in a search so we decided to check it out and the result was... we loved it! It was a bit packed around 7 o'clock, so we sat at the bar rather than waiting for a table. We met the owner, Griff, who was working behind the bar at the time. He had great suggestions regarding beers and menu choices. Later in the evening, they setup karaoke and moved some tables for dancing space. It ended up being a fun night out! My boyfriend and I head to the lake a lot throughout the year and will definitely be going back in the near future. read more

Just wanted to write a followup for Griff's. After almost five months, they seem to be finally getting it! Happy to report that I finally went back and the food, with the exception of the beef brisket, (still too dry) was wonderful. Ribs cooked to sweet, fall off the bone perfection, mac and cheese, (the way Mac and Cheese is suppose to be) was so good, I could go there to just eat that alone. Chicken was wonderful at first bite, but the garlicky taste started over powering the chicken. Service is always friendly but still slow but not painfully slow as in the past. Restaurant is beautifully done. Go there little earlier to peruse around the stores in the Copper Square. All the stores are tastefully done and it makes me proud to be a resident of Copperopolis. read more
