If you're in the area for business, like we were, I highly recommend Griff's. Excellent BBQ. The bottle caps are a can't miss appetizer.

My boyfriend and I had dinner here on his birthday a couple nights ago. The food was so fabulous! He had the brisket, that they apparently run out of quick because he was the last one to receive it. He absolutely loved it. And I had the steak sandwich, it was perfectly cooked! We sat at the bar, which we didn't mind doing but we did originally plan to sit at a table. I tried to call and make a reservation before hand and they don't make reservations for any parties less than 8 people. But the person I talked to assured me there would be no long wait. When we got there, there was a line and every table was full. That's the only drawback I came across. Otherwise, great service, great food, and a great drink selection. This is a great bbq place in a cute little town! I got the pulled pork sandwich which was really good, especially with the bbq sauce. And the onion rings were really good. This is the second time we have stopped for lunch. Very friendly staff. We were seated quickly and treated like old friends. The first time we had the special of the day--1/3 pound briquette burger. Wow! The flavors were outstanding. The second time--again the special of the day--another blended burger of ground beef and pork. Again, outstanding. So you're driving along in the Sierra foothills with little more that a cow here and there and out of nowhere you see a development that looks like a movie set complete with clock tower and town square. There you'll find gas, a pet store, jewelry, kitchen supplies and several good restaurants. Don't forget the Ice Cream! One of the restaurants that I always enjoy returning to is Griff's. It's a rustic well decorated place with great ambiance. The food is satisfying and the owners and waiters have always been very good to us. This is a very comfortable place with a great bar and outdoor seating. On nice days we'll sit outside with our dogs. The waiters always bring water for the dogs and take a little time to dote over them. Everyone at this mom and pop is so friendly and accommodating. One thing to keep in mind when visiting many of these small Sierra communities is that things do not move as quickly as they do in the big city. This is true of most of the restaurants out this way. Most of us head out this way to specifically get away from the hustle and bustle, so try to take it down a notch, relax and enjoy the hospitality. If you've not been by the shopping center or Griff's, take a break from your drive and pull in for a relaxing visit to Griff's and have a seat in the town square center for a peaceful and nostalgic break. Went there with a party of 12. Not one of us enjoyed any of our food. It was dried out pulled pork and chicken. It was cold and small portions. The price for a sandwich and cold fries was around $16.00. Service was okay, but nothing great. Cool building, but food was not good. None of us will be back! read more

We were treated terrible by the young tall brunette as soon as we walked in and asked to wait for a table away from front door. As soon as she cleaned the table for us she literally threw our menus on the table and walked away while we seated ourselves wondering what we did wrong?!?? The waitress is nice, but when my husband found plastic in his cold brisket she reached into his plate w her long finger nails and took the plastic to the back never to return with any solution? On our way back from a snow trip we spontaneously stopped here with no recommendation or reading reviews. It was overall a great experience, food was great and had a nice theme. Have been there twice the last month. First time, BBQ chicken moist and good service. Last time (this past Sunday) the server we very rude. We were not greeted at the door with a smile just a rushed scowl. When we asked for a low table and not a bar table we were treated to an eye roll. Really? How hard would it have been to be nice to us. We are paying your salary after all. My BBQ chicken this time was so overcooked there was no flavor left. My wife's chicken sandwich had tough and dry and overcooked chicken. The wait staff and the kitchen need an upgrade. read more

My family and I love this place it's a must stop when we drive by. We drive past when we go to the snow ever year and stop every time. It's grrrrreat barbecue that is well worth the price which can be high but trust me it worth every penny. Good beer selection also. I've been coming to Calaveras county since I was a kid. I was so excited when Griffs opened and there was finally a good spot to grab a quick bite to eat. Now that I live here, it has become our number one spot to grab lunch. I started out obsessed with the Mamas pasta and now it's the Southwest salad with crispy chicken added to it. My kids love the ribs and potato salad. Service is always amazing. They are always great with my kids. Even the cooks come out to say hi every now and then and see how things are going. You can tell the employees actually care about the customers. It's just a comfortable atmosphere. read more

Terrible experience! We sat outside because it was quite crowded inside and even asked if we would be forgotten, the hostess assured us that we would not be overlooked. My husband ordered the ribeye steak because they were out of several menu items, it was quite pricey but he took a chance and ordered it medium rare. When it arrived, it was delivered with a butter knife on the plate, when he asked for a steak knife the waitress replied "all the steak knives are dirty that is why I put a butter knife on the plate, butter knives will work too." He proceeded to ask for a steak knife and she said she would bring one when they were clean, halfway through his meal. I asked for BBQ sauce for my pulled pork sandwich which was delivered on a soggy bun and she never brought it. My husbands steak ended up being cooked well done and nobody from the wait staff ever came back to check on us. In order to get the bill, we had to place a call to the restaurant and ask somebody to bring us the check. When the waitress did finally come out to bring us the bill, she just read us the total from the tablet, we never even saw it so I have no idea if it was correct. I order the smoked portobello vegetarian sandwich which has goat cheese, granny smith apples, caramelized onion, fresh spinach & portobello mushroom all inside focaccia - I MEAN COME ON! Ate here twice during a recent trip to the area. First trip a light dinner shared the pulled pork nachos. Generous size, the pulled pork had a good smoke favor just wish there was more of it. The BBQ is delicious. Maybe the best sauce I've had. the 2nd visit was for lunch, sat outside at a picnic table, had the California Chicken Sandwich, Onion Rings & Fried pickles. Best Chicken Sandwich I've ever had. Onion rings were great as well. Fried pickles were tasty but a bit on the greasy side. Staff was friendly without being intrusive on both visits, food came out quick so if you looking for a good quick bit to eat while on the road they can serve you quick and get you back on the road in no time.
