Service was horrendous and the bar tender was drinking people's drinks... the pizza was decent though

Used to love coming here. Good patio and love the location. Last two visits have been sub par. The funky dough used to be this wonderful unique pizza bread knot. Now it's basically a think cheese pizza/cheese bread and overpriced. The pizza was greasy and the ingredients were lacking. Thursday is music night and when it's cold or rainy that means it's moved indoors, where it's then near impossible to have a conversation due to the loudness. Lastly, for the love of god, please make a menu where I don't need to cross reference whether I'm ordering a can or pint of beer. Just make a list of what's on tap and keep it up to date. They rarely have the beer you want, even though it's on the menu. read more

* I'll start by saying, we already had two wack experiences in the crossroads and I just wanted to cross this dump off of our list of places to go in KC. The first time the staff was so rude we left before finding a table. The second time, we waited almost 2 hours for our pizza. Our server ghosted us, instead of just being honest about the kitchen being crushed. The manager came over as the pizza was being delivered gave us some half assed apology. We would have left, but it was already so late and our toddler and one year old were wilding the hell out So Grinders Stonewall was our last attempt at trying to like this KC restaurant "brand" We arrived at 6, prime time, and the host quickly put us on the wait list, 35-40 minutes. It had rained outside so the patio was closed. There were a few people in the yard playing cornhole and drinking beers as we waited. The place is an old inn that has been converted. Sticker covered hallway, the owners massive stone and metal sculptures through out he property, eclectic decor and picnic table seating. We were seated in about 45 minutes and I panic ordered bc my 2.5 year old has about a 20 minute window at the moment before he loses it when dining out. We had far exceeded this limit. The waitress was friendly and brought saltines to the table which we were super grateful for! I asked for a recommendation and she pointed to the two pies featured on the Food Network (there's an icon on the laminated menu that highlights them!) I decided to go with the Pig Pie. When this culinary abomination landed. It was lukewarm, half cooked, and the toppings and "sauce" were so hap hazardly put on the pizza, you couldn't pick up a slice and enjoy. Half of the pie was raw and undercooked, the other half was barely cooked. Most of the toppings were on one side. It had sliced spongy tasteless meatballs and small squares of sliced deli ham as well as burnt bacon crumbles. The "sauce" was a globby "cream" that had the consistency of Denny's biscuits and gravy and tasted like it had absorbed some of the walk-in coolers funk. Gross. Me and my boyfriend both took a slice and ripped the crust off and fed it to the kids. I took a few horrible bites and then stopped myself. Our waitress came back by and asked "how's everything tasting? Good?" We sat silent and then asked for the check. She was so busy and was super helpful and I didn't want to download on her. What could have been done? A comped pie? A refire and wait another 30 minutes with two screaming babies? I used to be one of those people that said there was no such thing as bad pizza. It's all good! Nope nope Nope! I do not chalk this up to an off night in the kitchen, I def think this is the norm at Grinders. Luckily the staff was pleasant at this store. Came here for lunch with the family a few weeks ago and it was ok. Three of us got the cheesesteak and we got a slice of pizza for one of our kids. The cheesesteaks were a little disappoint with each of us having at least 1 piece of grizzle and some having multiple pieces. We had been to the original location and their sandwich was much better with the meat quality. The pizza was just ok too, kid ate some of it but there just wasn't much to it. It was really thin but not nearly as pliable as you would get in NYC. Menu is large, service is pretty good. This location seemed to be a lesser version of the original but can get the job done if you are in the area. Just don't go in expecting anything life changing. read more

Chose this place simply because Guy Fieri was there. I was able to sample a few things with our group: The Chili Bomb pizza (A+...my fave!), the meatball grinder (very good, a tad spicy), the pastrami sandwich (delicious, loved the banana peppers) and the Reuben (again, delicious). Overall I loved the food, the prices were standard and the wait staff was friendly. If I lived here, I'd certainly be back. It's funny how such a small building can pack so much personality. While masking itself as just a cute farmhouse building, Grinders is an absolutely fantastic place to eat. The atmosphere of the restaurant is absolutely splendid while the outdoor seating/standing creates a very family friendly location. Our food was not only quick but delicious. My pastrami sandwich was quite possibly my favorite sandwich I've ever had, and my wife's burger was fantastic. We highly recommend upgrading to tater tot's and sticking around for the happy atmosphere. Great place to eat. read more

I really used to love going here, but I ordered a to-go last night, and had to do so online bc it was too loud on the phone, but I had questions. I ordered online, and the order turned out fine. I asked if they did to-go 6 packs, she said yes...but it's limited. I said (repeatedly) I would just hit the store. She insisted, and I picked 5 beers and a mixed drink. I think I went pale when the total came to $38. As I was sitting at the bar, a small roach crawled right across my phone. I looked up and the lights were completely covered in dust. Seriously love this place!! We've been there pre and post covid - the food is consistently good! The menu is reduced during the pandemic, but that's to be expected. Bi-Weekly staple for our work lunch trips. Would be 5 stars but the service is slow certain days when they are busy. The menu is huge and I hear everything is good. Finally! I tried Grinders. Nothing but cool vibes during reverse happy hour on a weekday night. I would really love to give them 5 stars but, those pesky gnats and mild sewage odor....sigh. However, it didn't ruin my experience at all! I'll blame the gnats on all of the alcohol. My husband didn't smell the odor. Whatever. Maybe the construction nearby has something to do with it. Who knows. Anyways, they have so many beers! My husband was in brew heaven :) One of the gnats got to his beer before he did. We were offered another one but, we saw the bartender pour the gnat off and top off the beer again. Yuck! Without asking, our waitress got us a clean glass with more beer. Thank you!!!! She was holding down the bar area by herself and still managed to give us good service (insert applause here)! The prices here are pretty decent. $23 for everything with our coupon. I ordered the Baja Burger medium well and, it was cooked perfectly! I didn't care too much for the homemade chips that came with the burger. We got the wings too with the wimpy sauce. Seriously, that's what it's called. I wasn't in the mood for anything hot, but, I think the wimpy was way to wimpy. I'm not that much of a wimp lol. My husband tried some beers from the "off the menu". He said both were good but, the Slow Ride was his favorite over the Scotch Ale. Looking for loud? This place has you covered! I said THIS PLACE HAS YOU COVERED. Still didn't hear me? That's OK just smile and nod while you sink your teeth into that thick juicy burger. We're all going to leave here happy anyway. Within a few minutes of arriving for lunch with my coworkers we were all cracking up at the T-shirts the waitstaff was sporting. Our server confessed they are trying to bring some of their signature "Downtown Edginess" to Lenexa. The duct tape that was covering the expletive on her shirt told us it isn't quite working yet. Ah the delicate sensibilities of the suburbs. When you walk into what looks like an old timey cottage, the vibe is anything but country vintage. The tables are made from recycled bowling alley hardwood and there are metal street signs on the ceiling. It's small and it's loud. Ff you prefer to sit outside, lots of picnic tables (patio, or shady grass) await you. We ordered and while we waited for our food we mostly just smiled at each other and the tried to keep from elbowing the people sitting next to us at the next table. It's cozy. We heard a man exclaim with very colorful language what a good meal he was having. I had heard that profanity could be used to describe something you like, I guess I've heard it all now. My mushroom swiss burger was pretty good. I was disappointed that for the price paid it didn't come with a single side. (Toss me a mini bag of lays potato chips even?) However, the quality was worth it, that was one BIG patty and so juicy I felt the need to be hosed down afterwards. I have been to the Grinders at the crossroads several times and loved it. While I still enjoyed this newer location, I feel like there is something off about the atmosphere. It's a nice place but rather than feeling eclectic, it feels like the little girl trying to copy her cool older sister. It's endearing, but not quite right. My husband and I got the crabby rangoons to share, he got a philly and fries and I got the curried chicken salad and gouda casserole. His philly was huge, juicy and delicious, and the fries were normal salted crinkle cuts cooked perfectly. (I saw someone complain about their fries excessively... But I like them! I think they're simple on purpose... They balance all of the complex flavors, which grinders has an abundance of.) I love curry and I love chicken salad so I thought my sandwich would be amazing. The first bite was terrifying because it had a hugely disproportionate amount of curry seasoning in it. It was overpowering and I was so sad. I think something was just clumped in that bite though, because the rest of my sandwich was pretty good and more balanced. The gouda casserole was a little bland, but grew on me. The more I ate the better it got. I think I'll keep my chicken salad and my curry separate from now on but I'll definitely give the gouda another shot. Also... If you're only going to go to this restaurant once in your life, you pretty much HAVE to order the chili bomb pizza. It's a national treasure. read more

One of my most frequently asked questions to Kansas Citians is, "Who makes the best cheesesteak in Kansas City??" And, the most frequent answer is, "Grinders!" I often get cheesesteak cravings to satisfy my Philadelphia hometown itch. Well, I can finally say I have tried Grinders, and I was very happy with it! This Grinders location is relatively new, located just outside the city. For me, it is closest to my apartment, and near the mall, so perfect for me! My GPS took me there successfully, although I thought the building was a bit unusual for a restaurant. I entered Grinders for an afternoon lunch and sat at the bar. The place had a pretty cool vibe and there were a lot of people in there. I ordered a cheesesteak with fried onions and cheez whiz. My sandwich came out quickly, probably in about 10 minutes. The sandwich was a good size, definitely not skimpy, as non-Philadelphia cheesesteaks often are. The cheesesteak was not cut in half, which made it a little difficult to eat. I ended up cutting it in half myself and it made it a lot easier to eat. My first bite, I was impressed. Tasted very close to a cheesesteak back home. The cheez whiz was slathered loosely on top -- I wish it was either mixed in with the meat or spread on the bottom (which would be a more "authentic" technique). Of course, I ended up mixing the cheese and the meat together myself. The most important part, the bread, was CORRECT. Hallelujah! Amoroso rolls! The roll was lightly toasted, I suspect to conceal the slight staleness of the bread, which didn't exactly work. I forgive them though, the roll did travel a long way to get there. And I would much rather have a stale Amoroso roll blessing my cheesesteak than some other imposter. Amiss the technical errors, I really enjoyed my cheesesteak, and will most certainly be back. My lady loved it so much she's already asking when we can go back. Pizza crust was some form of dark magic. Paper thin yet somehow still chewy. The cheese and toppings were fresh salty and just down right wonderful. Pro tip, fold those big slices like a taco and go to town. Our server was also just a trip.
