Can't wait to come back here when it's warmer out. I didn't know anything about this place or how close it was to my house. And they have trivia on Monday nights!! I tried some pizza slices and some wings. Very glad I only got medium. My mouth was on fire but they were very good with lots of sauce on them. Be prepared to wait for a table. This place is fantastic. I like the location (neighborhood in Lenexa) and the building itself reminds me of an older styled village inn -- could be confused with another house in the neighborhood if the sign on the building didn't say "Grinders" and have a big parking lot next to it. This place exudes the small, cozy vibe that my initial assumption gathered when I pulled up to the house-esque restaurant. The food is certainly above average and I encourage you to try their original Philadelphia cheese steak with whiz and provolone cheese -- you'll thank me later. It's fantastic. As close as it comes to Philadelphia styled in KC. The house made potato chips are crispy and well seasoned. The Calzone, any of them, are big and easily shareable. The grinder sandwiches (meatball and chicken parm) are excellent as well. Easily put: I haven't had anything that I wasn't satisfied with here. Also, for the beer fanatics out there: they have a great selection of local, national and "I've never heard of this" beer. The waiters/tress have recommended great beers to me, so don't be shy or too snobby to ask them for a nice "beer surprise" or their recommendation. They are well knowledgeable and very helpful. The patio seating is fun, weather permitting, and is spacious with umbrellas. They have TVs hanging in every corner in this place. Been going to Grinders since it opened and I've always had nothing but good experiences. I try to do lunch there at least once a week depending on the special. I make sure that I sit in the bar area because I know that I will be taken care of by Jonathan. I've taken breaks from the place and every time I come back he knows what I'm going to order. Well I went in about a month ago and sat in the bar area and 20 minutes passed and no body bothered to come over and see what I wanted. The place wasn't packed or anything in fact there were a bunch of people standing around, I thought to myself did Jonathan quit or something so I decided to walk out. I went to Grinders at Stonewall on a weeknight. They were very busy so I expected the worst. Although Grinders was packed, the noise level was not bad. You could still talk to your companions without having to shout. The service was super fast even though the menu said my calzone would take 20 minutes. It did not take anywhere near that long. We got the 18" Crossroads pizza! It was delicious! I thought all of the toppings were going to be spread over all 8 pieces but, it was 2 of each kind of topping, which ended up being ok! I'm a kid at heart and still love a plain cheese pizza 2 pepperoni, 2 pineapple, 2 cheese, and 2 black olive! Perfect actually so my husband and I got a piece of each kind! I LOVED the crust! Thin and fluffy! I'm not a big fan of crunchy crust so this is perfect crust IMO. It was $21 for the pizza, not including tip. We normally do Pizza Hut because of the coupons, makes a large around $10, but want to try something different every once in a while! read more

Tried Grinders for lunch yesterday, 1st Time I'd been there since it was The Stonewall Inn. It's fairly loud but we were able to move tables which brought the noise level down to make conversation possible. I had to try the Meatball Grinder of course and it was excellent. Their meatball recipe harkens back to the original Grinders, very tasty. The french fries were just average crinkle cut generic fries. My partner tried the Reuben and said it was outstanding, a nice little bite to the kraut and the pumpernickel was nicely toasted. The accompanying chips were a nice surprise. We've eaten here many times and loved it, which is the only reason I donated a charity star to this review. I knew I would have 15 family members in town for a lupus walk for my niece, and wanted to be sure we had a good plan for eating dinner together. I called Grinders THREE times that week to confirm that we had a reservation. We arrived a few minutes early, and finally left almost an hour later without a table. We decided it would be perfect to sit out on the patio which is mostly shaded and backs up to their nice backyard. As much as I would have loved, LOVED, to have ordered a beer, I decided to not veer from my workday of "purity". With that said, I will definitely be returning when I have no work to be had and put an ice cold brew in my mouth...preferably, Breckenridge Nitro Vanilla Porter! This was easily the most disappointing meal of 2017 so far. I kind of wanted to give just one star (which I rarely do!) but bumping it up to two because Grinders Stonewall has a really nice building and atmosphere, and a killer beer list. Service was okay, too. But the food! No. I'd normally just chalk it up to "we ordered the wrong things" but they have grinder in the name of the restaurant and these phillys were terrible. My husband had a full veggie philly and it was primarily Cheez Wiz and bread. My half South Philly with provolone was a sad little mistake. I truly feel the sandwich chains could all do better...even Subway (which I view as a last-ditch option)! We really love to seek out unique local eats but this was bad! The meat was a very small amount and very tough and dry, I could barely see or taste any provolone, and I detected only a couple shreds of bell pepper after asking for "all veggies". There was no mayo or any other dressing offered, making it a dry and awful half-full, half sandwich. Looking at some of the other users' photos here on Yelp, we're now laughing because our sandwiches did not look remotely similar! The "ho made" chips were the absolute worst though. They came out cool and tasting of grease. The server took those off our bill after I mentioned our reason for not wanting them. I complain like once a year, so this was a big thing. I originally asked for the dessert of the day but then told the guy we'd skip it, as we had zero confidence in this place after the sandwiches and chips. The atmosphere's so good - really nice and old pub style - but without following up with really great food, I'm out. read more

It is more of a hole in the wall type of place if you are wanting a break from all the chains and normal fare. I usually go with the wings and the tots. They will not disappoint. Grinders came recommended so I searched in apple maps and headed that way. I drove right past it, but could be due to all the snow that just fell and limited road signage. I sat at the bar for a quick lunch. The Barmaid was very attentive and provided great service, quickly. I ordered the brisket-end sandwich (I've been told they run out of on busy days) and tots. Food was above average, but held onto a star because I was charged .25c for a side of mayo! (Which probably, equaled to be a pack of mayonnaise) Seems like a really cool place, with great music to hang out at. I plan to revisit and tryout the vast amount of food on the menu. They just might get another depending upon those results, definitely worth a visit. read more

Just left, and pretty disappointed with how dinner went. We ordered a calzone as soon as we got seated because it takes time to cook. It was done surprisingly quickly- because it wasn't cooked. The shredded cheese inside was cold, along with the meat. I get it, things happen, but when I have to ask for my food to be actually cooked and you can't even give me a discount on the calzone to make it right, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. They also just popped the cold, cut up calzone back in the oven. Disappointing. The food was good otherwise, our server was nice, but no real apology sucks. Ginders doesn't need my business, so me saying I won't be back isn't a big deal, but we won't be. I'd rather spend my money somewhere that can be bothered. read more

We always enjoy a night out at Grinder's Stonewall. The pizza is consistently good, and the beer is always cold. We have had great service every time we have visited. Trivia night can be a bit annoying if you're not there to play trivia. It was a bit loud, but it wasn't that bad. We love having a good local tap and pizza place near home. read more

In the past this would have been 5 stars. We hadn't been for a year and I'm sure COVID times have been challenging. But tonight the inside smelled moldy/musty/mild sewer gas. Too chilly to eat outside with the sun going down. We stayed. My order came out partially wrong but it was quickly and pleasantly corrected. But the faint but definite odd smell never disappeared. I know it's a very old building. I've eaten there often before and after the newest resurrection . They do follow safety measures. The food here is good. Love the selection of on-tap beer. But what was that odor? Others in our party mentioned it too. Ok it's a bar. Ok it's old. Ok beer gets spilled and all that. Still...we'll be back. Warmer weather is coming. It's a fun place. I'll be honest, I was a bit hesitant to try Grinders after hearing about a lot of bad reviews. I had heard stories about warm beer, wrong orders and rude staff. I also heard stories about the neighborhood nearby getting upset about the new restaurant, and wanting to shut it down. On Friday night I wanted to grab a bite at a local place (I despise big chain restaurants like Applebee's) and have a good beer with my dinner. I had never been to the location in the crossroads before and thought the Lenexa location might be a good place to start since I live only 5 minutes away. Maybe if I like the Grinders here, I'll only like the one in the crossroads that much more. Plus I wanted to find out if there was any truth to the stories I heard about the place. When we arrived at Grinders we were told there was a 15 minute wait. I expected the wait would take much longer since the place was PACKED! It was so busy people were waiting outside. It was 7:30 on a Friday night so what can you expect? I'm honestly surprised the wait was only 15 minutes. After being seated we ordered our drinks and dinner. Grinders has quite the beer selection. I love how they organize their beer menu so you can easily find a good beer to try. They break the beer menu down into types of beer, like stouts and porters, ipas, wheat beers, browns etc. With so many different beers to choose from it's hard to make up your mind! I went with a left hand nitro milk stout because I hadn't had one in quite a while. It was served COLD in a COLD beer glass the way beer is to be served. By the way if you like either stouts or good craft beers and haven't tried a left hand nitro yet, you're missing out! Remember to pour hard! Now where was I? Oh yeah, so we also ordered an appetizer because we both were really hungry. Almost ordered the chips and guacamole but decided to go with the funky dough. I'll try the guac next time. So we didn't really know what to expect with the funky dough. The menu made it sound like breadsticks with mozzarella and Italian seasoning. It turns out funky dough is a 12 inch pizza crust with mozzarella and Italian seasoning! It was really good too! I'd highly recommend it. For dinner I ordered a margerita pizza, and my wife went with a bacon and pepperoni calzone. The calzone was HUGE! I tried a little bit of it and I was satisfied. Not saying it wasn't good, it was quite tasty. Just saying there's one other place in town that has a better one. The pizza was great! Best pizza I've eaten in the suburbs! Grinders says their pizza is New York style, but I think it's kind of a New York/Artisan hybrid. It's thin. REALLY THIN. Pretty crispy but not in an overcooked kind of way. The inside is a minimal amount of doughiness. I'd love to get the margerita pizza again but there's so much other stuff on the menu that sounds awesome! So after my experience I find it hard to believe the bad things I heard about this place. Maybe they're true, maybe not. After my visit I'm no longer curious about those stories, but am curious about others such as the place being haunted. Hope to learn more about this on my next visit. I have to wonder about all of the negative reviews by people with no other or minimal reviews on Yelp. Disgruntled neighbors who didn't want Grinders in their neighborhood to start with maybe? I love Grinders. I was excited to hear they were opening another location and it did not disappoint at all! The service was fantastic. The greeter was friendly and very personable. The bartender was also very friendly, nice chat while keeping busy and she let me know about the happy hour specials for timing my future visits. The real over the top in the service was the manager (I think he was the manager being he seemed to make the decisions) was getting ready to taste some new beers to decide if he wanted to add them to the menu. He could have tasted them with the distributor, but asked if I would like to taste them also. He introduced himself (and I am terrible with names, so forgive me), discussed the beers, and didn't seem like an employee. It was like sitting next to buddies enjoying a tasting flight of beers. great job by everyone making me feel welcome and providing fantastic service. I have to say, the service is a plus over the Crossroads location. The food is Grinders. If you like their food you will not be disappointed here. I stepped away from my normal pizza loves and went for a pastrami sandwich. Grinders has a pretty legit pastrami. I like the options of various sides although there is an up-charge if you want something other than the chips that come with the sandwiches. The decor and feel of the place is different than the Crossroads location. This isn't a bad thing. The Crossroads vibe wouldn't work in the burbs, but they can make Grinders work in the burbs. There is a great outdoor area to sit and eat or drink. I noticed there are game options too. The music is loud. Very loud. Definitely cranked up to 11! A good mix of rock music blasts out the speakers which may attribute to the loudness. This is an easy fix for lunch dinner time and the level may be more appropriate for bar hours. This is a quick drive for me after classes. Great prices on amazing pizza slices will have me taking advantage of the new location. If you live out south give Grinders Stonewall a shot. Go in with an open mind and not the "not in my neighborhood" mentality and you will be pleasantly surprised. Great addition to the chain wasteland! read more

WOW!! Before I wrote this I wanted to peruse the reviews to see if I was the only one disappointed with Stretch's new south JOCO creation and I'm surprised as hell that most are pretty good!! My family is VERY familiar with the Crossroads location as we frequent the area for business. We have eaten there frequently so know the food and menu well; and know the flaws and mishits there. My buddy wanted to try it out so we went last night ( Friday) and man it is really bad!! No atmosphere whatsoever. If he was trying to imitate the old location, he failed miserably! It looks like he cleaned it up a bit, hung a few signs and called it "good". Now to be fair, most of JOCO suburbia will be ok with this because they like things nice and safe and family friendly, but if you travel the metro area and like hitting all the local places, bars and restaurants and other funky places, you will think this location is very pedestrian. The Crabby Rangoon were nowhere near as good as the Xroads location and they were burned on the tips. The taste was basically your average Chinese carryout with no real taste of the crab. The guacamole looked very fresh but I didn't have any so cannot comment. It was the freshest looking thing. Two of us had the Philly's and as with the old location; big but NO seasoning or flavor and the meat was tough and rubbery. And I have never understood why he doesn't at least offer Au Jus or horseradish sauce. Our other friend had the Roast Beef sandwich and he was very unhappy about it. Frankly I am not surprised that much. It is kind of what I expected. What I didn't expect is that the place would be so Spartan and plain. The dining room looks kind of like it did when it was the Stonewall Inn. My recommendation? If you want Grinders, make the trip to the Crossroads where you can have better food, surly, slow service from the staff and an actual Unhomogenized downtown experience. read more

The best thing about Grinders is their outdoor space and ambiance for families & kids. Their downfall is low quality food. I ordered their goat cheese salad and the lettuce came wilted. Our family shared the Philly Cheese steak "Gourmet Pizza" which was described on the menu as coming with Red sauce, philly meat, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, provolone, and mozzarella. The cheese that came on our pizza was bright yellow and tasted like velveeta The entire pizza was just bland in my opinion. The menu is fairly large so I would just try something else next time if my family goes again. read more

My parents and I came here for a casual dinner on a Saturday night. We didn't have to wait for a table, which was nice, although a few other groups did. It was pretty busy. They have a super cute outdoor area with games and a volleyball court, as well as seating for customers who are ordering food. We ordered a half order of the fried mushrooms as an appetizer, and they were delicious. My dad and I split a Philly Cheesesteak with some tots, both of which were really great. The Philly could've been a little more flavorful. My mom ordered the BLT, which came with house made potato chips. Those can either be a hit or a miss, and these were a hit. All in all, it was a great spot for a casual dinner with good service. The parking can be a bit tight, especially on a busy weekend, and I wouldn't recommend bringing young children here. read more

Forgot to post a review of this place. And rightfully so given the experience. The food was over-priced and lackluster. Granted, it's been a while, but it wasn't worth stopping for. It really makes me miss the old Stonewall Inn restaurant, which was amazing. That place had amazing fish, steaks, homemade sides, and the best fried pickles I've ever had. This place now has mediocre sandwiches (the cheesesteak was really sup-par meat & the pastrami was bland as all get out) and overpriced drinks. And the 2 times I've dropped in, the service has been slow and poor. Sad times indeed. read more

Good food, good location! I love the "choose two" options. My favorite combination so far has been one slice of pizza (Philly cheesesteak and the BBQ chicken pizzas are delicious) and half of a grilled Caesar wedge salad. That being said, there's tons of stuff on the menu and certainly everyone will be able to find something they like, from pulled pork sliders, pizza, wings, and salad. They also have a huge bar, and daily specials! Everyone that I've interacted with is very nice and friendly, but for some reason the food always comes out at very different times, very staggered. But other than that, I've had good experiences with servers and bartenders. I really like this Grinders location and can't wait to sit in their really cute outdoor seating area once it gets a little warmer! read more
