I've done my own oil changes in the past (with the help of a friend) and I trust these guys to steer me right if ever anything is off with my car - it's a Honda so knock on wood nothing is ever off with my car haha. read more

I'm hoping my experience here was not the norm. Maybe it's just this location, but I was straight up lied to about my power steering. I took the car in for a state inspection and asked them to check the power steering while they were at it. They took a look and said everything was fine. Two weeks later I had a check engine light due to a faulty gas cap. Take the car in and they "remembered" that they initially "forgot" to check the axle that now "needs" to be fixed for the power steering (to the tune of $300), despite powering steering working fine. I took the car to my friend who's a mechanic at Lamb's in Bee Caves. If the drive wasn't so far I would have taken the car their initially. My friend told me there's nothing wrong with the axle and they were just looking to make a buck. Dishonesty is a deal breaker in my book. I wish I knew more about cars so I can call this garbage out immediately. Never going back to this location. read more

I was on a time crunch to get my car fixed after failing my car inspection, and they were able to order my parts and get me in really quickly! I had to replace the plastic lens on my blinker lights because they were cracked, and unfortunately the body of my car required them to take the whole bumper off just to replace them. However, they got the job done faster than they originally said they would, and they also fixed the bend in my bumper while replacing the lenses which was really nice. I requested a quote online and within an hour or two I received a response back from Tim, the store manager. I was also able to set-up an appointment directly with him for the day of. He was flexible, patient with my requests, and very accommodating when I mentioned the current discount on the website. When I showed up he remembered our interactions and specific services I needed immediately and even had all the parts ordered, laid out, and ready so that they could get started ASAP. He seemed to want to make it clear to me that he was following the services I had agreed on in the quote/emails we had exchanged. On top of all that, his friendly and straightforward demeanor put me at ease that there would be no unnecessary upselling. The work was done in less than the time estimated and he gave me helpful information about some of the results of the tests they had run. He automatically accounted for the discount without me mentioning it again. The battery charge check was a little pricier than I thought it would be, but everything else was fair and competitively priced...small price to pay considering I had gotten the discount! After that, I was all set... I was surprised at how quick, easy, and pleasant the whole experience was. They did most of the work for 1/10 of the dealer estimate; turns out, much of what the dealer claimed needed done either didn't need done or was a much smaller job. Very honest guys here! Gruesome Automotive, you've wronged me for the last time. False diagnoses. Overcharging for labor. Double and even TRIPLE charging their "diagnosis fee". Replacing a part in the engine, only to never reset the master on-board computer, so that subsequent computer-based diagnostics show the part as MISSING. No wonder my "check engine" light turned on shortly afterwards. There is not one single good thing about their service or their attitude. Austin has plenty of shops that specialize in vehicle makes -- take your car to one of these specialists and avoid the overpriced run-around at Groovy. Your car deserves better. read more

I've got a riddle for you: What's the opposite of groovy? Groovy Automotive! (OK, no one ever said I was clever.) But seriously folks, this place is where you're sent if you 'fail' an inspection at Groovy Lube. And they're equally as unpleasant and uninformative. They 'checked out' my brakes over the course of an hour (spent reading an old newspaper in a tiny 'lobby' while "Bonanza" played on the TV -- so NOT groovy), told me what they 'thought' *might* be wrong with them (or maybe nothing at all), and said I could come back in a couple days for a 'real' inspection that would cost me $100+ on top of the work I'd need, if I needed it. I finally weaseled it out of the mechanic that there wasn't really any immediately necessary work to be done, then was able to go back to the other location and get my official inspection sticker. read more

I would not trust these guys for anything other than a routine oil change. I was given a $3,000 estimate to replace basically my entire suspension - all four struts, front and rear bushings, cv axle, control arm, etc. I was told they had never seen a suspension in worse shape on a car in Austin. They apologize for the bad news but recommended I get the work done right away to avoid more severe problems. I decided to get a second opinion from a mechanic I trust and I'm glad I did. They found nothing wrong with my suspension aside from normal wear and tear. Specifically, Groovy said my driver side cv axle needed complete replacing but the second shop found nothing wrong with it. This was a blatant lie. The second shop recommended eventual replacement of just the front struts, but overall found the suspension to be in good shape. I will never again take an auto of mine to Groovy, as I can no longer trust them. They also broke the handle off of my dipstick. Bad news all around at this shop. read more

I have a fairly new car - never had any issues. They told me it was standard to get a couple services done on my car at 60K miles. One would be $600-$700 and the other $129. They threw this on in a very nonchalant manner as I paid for my oil change and inspection. I called my old mechanic and asked what the service details were for 60K on my car and they said nothing. I told them what I was quoted at this place and they said that it was not due till 90K and it would be $450 with parts and labor. I'll never go back to Groovy Automotive. Their Customer Promise, or 10 commandments or whatever they call it is BS. They are dishonest and rip-off artists (well not so artful, they were poor liars and didn't get me). Ps. I had the same problem as Carrie C. with this place (specifically the Red River location), i.e. over-charging and replacing a part that probably had nothing to do with the problem in the first place, and having to take it back and not getting any sort of discount. My car wouldn't start, so I had it towed from my apartment to Groovy Auto on a Saturday morning. I got it back the next Monday afternoon, along with a $940 bill. They replaced my fuel pump (for $658), fuel filter and relay. The guy then proceeded to tell me that my car was "tricky to start," so he walked out to it and showed me that I needed to wait until I saw the "check engine" light come on before I could start my car. Riiight. Is this how a seven year old car is supposed to be started every time? Doesn't this mean there's PROBABLY something wrong with it still? Whatever, so I drove it back home. That night, I drove to school, and had some troubles starting my car to drive back home. The following night, I drove to Whole Foods. Once again, I couldn't start my car to come back home. The next morning, my dad called Groovy again (he can be pretty intimidating, so I left it up to him to talk to them), and said that they offered to pay for the tow fee this time. I waited around Whole Foods for the tow guy, missing my first class for the day. Groovy called me later that day and said my car was ready, so I took the bus from campus to pick it up. This time, they simply fixed the ignition switch. Wouldn't you think that'd be the first place to look if the car wasn't starting? Not only that, but when they gave me the bill, I saw that they charged me for the tow. I told them that they said they'd pay for the tow, and then the dude proceeded to tell me that they gave me a student discount, which "pretty much paid for it" (not so, because the student discount was $40, and the tow fee was $85 because it was in a parking garage and they had to push it). I then thought, wait a minute...should I have gotten a student discount on the first bill as well? I didn't mention it though, but told him that my dad was under the impression that they'd pay for the tow as well. So, he kind of complained about having to print up another invoice, and I said, can't you just credit the card? Uh, duh. So, he did. I then found out later that they had told my dad that when I picked my car up from them after the first "repair" that they had advised me to let them work on my car some more and that I had "refused" their advice and service. Which, did not happen AT ALL. They basically just lied to my dad's face (err...ear). SOOOO, to make a long story short: Don't go to Groovy Auto on Red River and tell everyone you know not to as well. read more

Went here to get my car inspected today. After talking to an elderly gentleman, he had somebody come in and grab my keys and insurance from me without a single word and go drive off in my car. After 10 minutes he brought it back. The heated seats were both on, the fragments from the old state inspection sticker were strewn across the dash, the hood was still popped open (he'd driven into the parking lot with it open), and the plastic cover for the OBD port was still popped off and sitting on the center console! This guy came back in, gave me my keys and insurance and told me $28.something (I forget the exact price). After I paid he mumbled "have a good day." I know I was only here for an inspection, but given how I was treated, I will never be returning. It really wouldn't have taken much more effort to clean up the mess they made in my car, close the hood, and be even mildly friendly! read more

Do NOT go here! "He tightens and loosens a few spare parts. One thing's fixed, another falls apart." My first time here. Our van was leaking a lot of oil. After charging us $48 diagnostics fee, (Not so) groovey automotive told us our oil pan gasket blew out. They also said we had a hole in our oil pan. Obviously to replace the gasket you must pull the engine. They quoted us $1200.00 roughly. We went for a second opinion and the second mechanic (a friend) told us groovey fabricated this diagnostics. For $150.00 he replaced a top seal. we were back in the road with no problems. A classic example of "trust your mechanic" This was very unethical and unprofessional. Save your automotive future trouble and your wallet money by going to a place that cares about their customer. read more

We used a groupon here for an oil change and tire rotation. I got a call from the mechanic saying that we had a leak in the radiator and that one my belts was badly decomposed. The cost to repair it would be $400. I am not particularly well-educated in the mechanics of a car engine, but I know what a leak looks like and I know what an old piece of rubber looks like. I asked the mechanic to show me the leak in the radiator. He pointed to some radiator fluid that was evaporating around the cap. I then asked him to show me the belt that was worn out. He pointed to some vague spot in the engine and told me it was difficult to see, but there were chunks missing. I told him I would take my chances. Following this, I drove my car 600 miles to New Orleans and 600 miles back. I've probably put 1500 miles on it in since I was told about the radiator and belt problem a month and a half ago. I haven't had to replace the radiator fluid, and none of the belts have gone out. I think it's safe to say that this place will rip you off. Don't waste your money or time here. read more

I bought the groupon for an oil change. Overall, I was underwhelmed. Pros: --It was quick--took about 30 minutes. Granted it was a Tuesday at around 2pm. --The staff were friendly enough. Cons: --They didn't ask me what kind of oil I wanted. I drive a sportier car so usually I buy the more expensive stuff, but I have no idea what's in there now. --In what I assume to be an attempt to reset my oil change notification thingy, they messed up the clock, so I had to reset it. Not a big deal...just inconvenient. You'd think it would be common courtesy to fix what you accidentally changed. --The Groupon mentioned that on top of an oil change, they would also vacuum the interior, clean the windows, etc. None of that was done. After having a very bad experience at Jiffy Lube, I've been looking for a local place to change my oil. Unfortunately, this won't be it. read more

So sad this place has such low reviews, my 2 experiences here have been better than previous reviewers. PS Update: I had 3 male friends walk in and one was very assertive that he knew about cars so don't try anything kind of attitude...after reading many reviews...I felt like the total $145 price was because of those three male friends and they knew they couldn't rip me off...OMG..I hope nothing breaks down...I am scared now..I am glad my experiences here were decent and do-able. Horrible parking "lot"!!!! They give you a ride if you need it, and they provide a "student discount" that isn't really a discount but still. I heard about this place from my roommate. His car was smoking one day on the way to UT-Austin campus and the funny story is that we thought it was the car in front of us that was having this stream of white smoke. Well we got to campus and I was dropped off...his car dropped dead. So he looked on his IPhone and found the closest place to UT-Austin campus. He called the toll-truck and got his car towed there. They informed him that his radiator was broken. So within a day, they were done with the service, gave him a student discount and $500 bucks later, he was driving out the door. Fast but a bit expensive even with the discount. They charge for an estimates $40 I think but the estimates includes any adjustments that needs to be done unlike other places that only look and do no work. I kind of like this idea and I kind of don't. On a business level-they want to weed out the "non-serious people who only want to fix their car if it dies on them," it saves time and labor. Is it customer friendly...??? H-E-L-L N-O! So when it was time to do my state inspection, I went to Lube Pit something by my house and they told me I was going to fail the state inspection since my E brakes were not working. I immediately called Groovy since it's really the only place I know that has fast service and we are one car down right now. They charged me $111(estimate included) for fixing my brakes because "it required more than the $40 adjustment coverage" and "shop fee" which was like $8 something. The shop fee charges changes because I remember my roommate had a "shop fee" of like some really high number, and $28.75 for the state inspection. He told me the walk out the door price was $145 total which by the way included my $16.20 student discount. The tech guy called me at 3:30pm and informed me of the break issue, I asked him if he could have it done by 4:30pm otherwise can it wait until tomorrow? My E brakes were broken but my regular breaks work, just badly but not illegal to drive so as I said, we are one car short right now, but he said yes. I arrived at 4:40pm and my car was ready to go. The E breaks and regular breaks are up to date, the breaks are very responsive now. They also changed my wipers for free because mine were old and was going to fail inspection too. This was a nice gesture even though the windshield wipers are of course shitty but hey, it's free right? No problems so far with my car breaks. My roommate car was totaled during the accident recently after he got the radiator fixed so I can't really review how the car runs "post-groovy-workmanship." I recommend this place for fast service but I do agree that it is expensive. They are apart of BBB and also all their technicians are highly certified....maybe that explains the price they charge. You can see the certificates when you walk into their office. It is very dark inside their office. If you are a weak driver, don't go there by yourself, parking is horrible!! They not only did they not diagnose my issue correctly, but they also tried to charge me over $400.00 for two parts I picked up at Napa for $50.00. I had a previous bad experience with them in the past and against my better judgment, tried them again. All I can say is listen to these reviews and others in the community. When I confronted them on the price markup, they said they had to make a living. Groovy Automotive is *not* groovy and will try and rip you off. I took my truck to ME Gene's on Airport. I've never taken my car to Groovy Automotive. *Keep this in mind. I have a 1995 VW Golf. I bought it off of a very militant chick who kept her receipts of all the work she'd done on the car. And all that work, she got done at Groovy. When I test-drove it, it stuttered and stalled a little bit, but the air conditioner was cold and worked well, the engine was strong, so I bought it. Once I did, she handed over the folder with all the receipts. Girlfriend had put at least the amount I bought it for in the past year ($2500.00). I've never taken my car here, but I took the car into Austin VeeDub. With part and labor, it cost me $100 and now it drives great. read more

I took my car to Groovy with an AC issue. When I got the estimate back the mechanic said I had holes in my compressor and it would cost $2000 to repair it. Well the blue book value on my car is only $3500 so I just decided to live with it. Within a week my car overheated, which was new. This time I took it to a different mechanic and they said the car was overheating because the switch connected to the fan is now missing. They asked if the car had been worked on recently. I told them I took my car into Groovy and the quote for $2K. They were really surprised by that. They have never heard of a AC repair quote that high. I had them run the check the AC again & just replace the switch. Well they couldn't find a problem with my AC outside of it being out freon. All they had to do was put $17 worth of freon in it. The car runs great now. Stay away from Groovy. They're theives & con artists. read more

Anyways my parents were terrified it was the transmission, but $450 later they were happy to say that it wasn't. JK! I have only been here once, because I wanted to get my oil changed and my tires balanced and rotated before a long road trip. They charged me an arm and a leg for the service, and they told me I really needed to replace a (very expensive) part immediately. Because I have some friends who are mechanics, I called them, and they checked it out and said it was only a MINOR problem... it would be good to replace that part EVENTUALLY, but not to worry myself too much about it. I wish I could give them four stars but I just cant...I got the groupon which has paid for itself in oil changes already. I really like the guys here, they are super friendly and remember me when I come in (it's about once a month...my car is kind of a piece.) The biggest problem I have with them is this: When I bought my car the radio had been ripped out (shady, I know but it only cost $3,500 so what am I gonna say...) Because of this my drive time sensor was all messed up...apparently a fuse or something electical got ripped out. I took it in for it's inspection in June and it didnt pass. I was told to drive it more. Took it in two weeks later, it didn't pass. And every month until about November when I finally decided I needed to spring for whatever repair it needed (the check engine light was never on) to get it to pass inspection since I had just received a threatening letter from the City of Austin. (Apparently it is now within their power to tow empty cars if they see an expired tag. Don't get me started.) So, I called the Honda dealership. Over the phone my problem was diagnosed. I know....never go to the dealership...but it only cost me $150 for the repair and the inspection. An inspection I had paid for about 5 times already. How did they not make a connection there? They clearly had been inside my car several times not only for the inspection but for other repairs and the radio has very clearly been ripped out leaving a gaping hole and wires. So last month I took in my groupon for some more repairs. In August I had been in to have them check my brakes. Apparently they were "dusty"....and I thought they must have been fine because what auto repair shop doesnt spring for a chance to charge you for a repair. They told me I had about 40% left on my pads and to come back in a few months. Since then until Februrary my car's brakes (which feel fine) made horrible sounds. I took it in again and they said I had a $400 repair on the rear and that that should fix the sound. It didn't. They also said I have a $200 repair on the front...if it wasn't for the groupon I would find another shop. read more

Groovy Auto is a cook place to get your car worked on. Most of the team, if something is wrong with your auto, it's important to get it fixed (1) quickly (2) at a good price and (3) without being upsold for a bunch of stuff you don't want. My sole experience with Groovy has been that they deliver on all three. The staff is friendly and seems to take pride in their work and the prices are reasonable. Also, the time they quote to fix the car is usually pretty accurate, which helps when making alternate plans. read more

I'm not really the type of person who would describe themselves as an austinite or groovy or anything in the slightest, but I'm not really conservative either. This was a strange choice for me in mechanics, but I went here because they have a reputation for being honest and not upselling you, and from my end of things that seems to be just how things operated. I was having major electrical problems with my old car, a pretty old 1993 chevy lumina, and they were able to fix the alternator and restore my car back to functionality for a very reasonable price. For the battery outages and problems that I was having beforehand and the age of the car, I am very impressed that Groovy was able to solve all my problems. Some of the guys at the counter seemed a little disrespectful and made me feel like less of a man because I'm not like Joe Carbuff, but the mechanic I had was a long blonde haired guy who was really awesome, direct, and got the job done. read more

Wow, I thought it might be just me, especially since the first time I came here they seemed to be pretty reasonable, but even that time despite the fact I told them there were underlying issues with my brake light, they merely replaced a bulb. Came back to get brake light underlying issues addressed. Overcharged for light according to my after the fact price checking. Came in to get window set back on track. I could hear the motor running in the door. Despite this they said it needed a new motor, then called me back to say they broke the back window motor belt too and were "only going to charge me $75.00." They backed off of that after I questioned the ethics of breaking something and trying to charge for it. I will not be going back. Sad, as they are pretty convenient to where I live and work, but now that I see all the other people having issues with them I think I probably got lucky they broke my stuff and tipped me off to their ethics by trying to charge for it. read more

Granted, I had a rare car that was probably a headache to work on, but they could have just turned me away and told me I should seek an expert on that type of vehicle. I spent too much and the repairs were not quality -- I had to bring it back several times before they fixed the original problem, and then the fix didn't last, and cost me dearly. I gave Groovy lots of chances, but every time I took my vehicle to them it cost me twice what I was expecting to pay and most times they would tell me the work I wanted was not needed, but there was always other work that was imperative I get taken care of right away. The last straw was when I took my car in for a stalling problem and they ran all the gas out of my full tank, had it for two days and claimed it never stalled out on them; yet still charged me $90; FOR NOTHING! Rating Given: 4 of 5 stars Rating Deserved (before management stepped in): 1 of 5 stars Call me a contrarian of the highest order, but when everyone sings the praises of one business (or watches the same movie/show, listens to the same song, etc etc), I become leery. This is particularly true in Austin where there's almost a whiff of cult-like status (that is overstated, unearned, and unnecessary) on some businesses because they are 'Austin Originals.' So that all is going through my head when I went to Groovy Automotive. Why would I go there instead of the dozen other places I could have? I'm not ashamed to admit it--I had a coupon. I usually wouldn't evaluate an auto shop's technical expertise but will so here because of what happened. Anyhoo ... oil change performed with no issues. They did the "walk you to your car and point out stuff that's wrong so we can up sell" like most places. It's a soft sell and out in the wide open, so I didn't feel pressured. I drive out of the location about 25 minutes later and head home, roughly 6 miles away. The check engine light suddenly turns on, and the car begins to rumble. I was blessedly close to my work, so I coasted into my normal parking place and called up Groovy. The manager gets on the line and walks me through a few things to do to the car so he can guesstimate what's wrong (goodness knows I am clueless ... hence, why I take my car to shops for oil changes). After several minutes, manager concludes that the cap on the oil thingy beneath the car came off, and the car is out of oil. Serious pronouncements are made about my not driving my car AT ALL. Before panic set in (and I called my insurance company to file a claim), the manager said he was driving out to where I was himself and would refill the oil and fix the cap. He was there within an hour and did just that. He then asked me to bring the car into the shop the following morning so he could personally inspect it. I left it at work until the next day (minor inconvenience) and did as requested. They provided a thorough written checklist to me of everything they rechecked to certify the car and engine weren't permanently damaged. They also invited me to have a separate shop inspect their work on the manager's dime. And I was refunded my oil change and provided 2 free ones--both which would always be performed by the manager himself. So, they initially earned 1 star because the one thing they were paid to do wasn't properly done and could have ruined my car. The manager's redemption of their work adds 3 stars onto the review. And here's where I eat crow: I admit that a national chain would likely not have provided this level of personal service. Austin Original, meet new believer. EDIT: Having read some of the horrendous reviews on here, I'm going to caution that my 4 of 5 star rating is ONLY for the oil change. Last year I took my car here to get inspected and it was a very smooth process. This year was annoying. I called them to find out their hours and the guy on the phone says they close at 6 and stop taking cars at 5:45. I only work downtown and it's a short distance away until Austin decides they want to do construction on every single road ever. I called them at 5:40 just to make sure I'd be okay because I didn't know if there was a line. I was right around the corner. The guy says, "Well, it's too late. We stop taking cars at 5:30." Interesting, I thought you stopped at 5:45? Someone just wanted to go home early. Today I called at noon (Saturday) and verified they do inspections on weekends (some places don't). They man on the phone says, "We have four cars ahead of you so we're not taking any other inspections." Are you f^cking kidding me? You can't inspect five cars before 5pm and it's only noon? Give me a break. I called another location on N. Lamar and it was smooth and easy. Very dishonest and expensive service. Will nickel and dime for absolutely everything. I got my car repaired here several times and they still refused to work with me and insisted on charging far too much to simply put in a battery when one of their mechanics told me that I had already settled up and they could do it with no extra charge the day before. read more

I brought my car into Groovy to have my AC looked at. I chose this place because it was close to my work, and my friend had told me they give rides to/from work. The employee who took me to work was very friendly. My car was quickly inspected, and I was called promptly. However, this is where the positive things stop. I was told that I needed a whole new AC, and the estimate was $1,685.00. When I said I that I needed someone to come pick me up so I could get my car, the guy told me that he would knock $100 off of the estimate. When I arrived to pick up my car, they collected $100 for me for the diagnostics on my vehicle. When I told him that I didn't believe the air compressor was broken because the unit was working with freon, he didn't say anything and just collected my money. I left feeling that I was cheated. I took my car to mechanics that I trust in Round Rock, E&T Automotive. (I didn't originally take my car here because of the distance between where I live/work. However, I won't make the same mistake again.) After carefully inspecting my car, it was discovered that my discharge hose was leaking, and I needed a new air compressor. The same diagnosis, right? However, the estimate to fix was $800. They did the work, and my AC is working perfectly. Wish I would have went to E&T first. I would be $100 richer. read more

Charged over 300 dollars for a oil pressure switch replacement. Not much else to say. It should be much cheaper than that
