The food here is amazing and so is the drinks. The only issue is the attitude of some of the employees which makes it very difficult to enjoy. We walked in and we were next in line so we walked up to the middle of the two registers so we could see he menu and look at the items to pick what we wanted to get. All of a sudden one of the employees yells at us with attitude saying "the line is behind the customer I'm helping right now" I responded by letting him know we are next in Lin and we are just looking to see what we want to order. He then repeats himself like 3 or 4 times so I proceeded to repeat myself and pointing at my eyes and back at the food to show him that we are "looking" to see what we want to get. He then got very offended. Haha I'm laughing because I pretty much had no other way to tell him what we were doing. He was on a power trip and wanted us to stand in line behind the person he was helping when in reality it made no difference because we were approximately 2 feet over. Food is good! Coffee is bomb! I was in LA on business and was staying at an Airbnb not far away from here. When you're staying in Hollywood and you Google "wifi restaurants near me" a TON of options come up! After much scrolling and reading, I chose Groundwork because I wanted actual FOOD (not just pastries and pre-made wraps, as you often get at a coffee shop). The menu is surprisingly robust. They offer a few toasts (including avocado for you-know-who), house-made ricotta and jam (YUM!) and smoked trout. They also offer several plated full breakfast / brunch dishes and the prices are reasonable, especially for LA. (Seriously I've had WAY more expensive -- and not as good -- breakfasts in LA before. (LAMILL in Silver Lake, I'm lookin' at you...) Aaaaanyway, I chose the Bitches Brew Hash, which is a play on eggs bene. Two poached eggs on a bed of wilted spinach, grass-fed short rib, potatoes with harissa Hollandaise and a toasted English muffin on the side. I asked for the harissa Hollandaise on the side because I can't do spicy food and the sweet young man assured me "it isn't spicy" -- LOL YOUNG MAN... I SAY LOL TO YOU. (Spoiler alert: The decision to side the sauce was a good one because I'm a big baby when it comes to heat and harissa is hot.) After several minutes, they called my name and I went up to get my food. (They serve on these charming pewter plates, which is smart from a breakage standpoint. I found that although the short rib and the other elements were excellent, the eggs were cooked too long, and the yolks were hard. Drat. I asked for new eggs and they graciously poached me two more, which were perfectly soft and runny as they should be. Yay! Thank you for fixing it! The dish is really delicious. I don't usually eat much bread, but that English muffin was worth it. I stayed a while to work and enjoyed the atmosphere. Overall it's a great spot, so much so that I came back the next day and ordered exactly the same thing. To my dismay, both poached eggs were again hard cooked. I didn't say anything this time, because I really didn't want to be that high maintenance customer who complains two days in a row about the eggs. So I ate them, and of course it was GOOD but a poached egg is supposed to be soft and gloriously runny when you pierce it, to mix with all that delicious spinach and short ribs. Would I go back? Of course! Front of the house is friendly, and without the LA attitude that you sometimes find here, which is lovely. I'd probably choose something else from the menu though. read more

I wish I could give additional stars, because the food was fantastic, the coffee was delicious, and the shop vibe is spot on. But the guy behind the counter provided such terrible customer service that it clouded the entire experience. I asked for a latte with light foam and he fired back "lattes don't have foam" with the most unfriendly look, like he thought I was the biggest idiot he had ever waited on. That statement was news to me ... so I asked 'really?'. Mistake, should have just shut up ... he told me only cappuccinos have foam. It wasn't so much what he was saying (maybe he's new to the coffee business, which would explain his lack of knowledge), but the tone of utter disgust at having to school to me ... Recognizing that I was talking to a jerk, I just said 'interesting' and ordered my latte. I also decided, in that instant, to not buy any merch or coffee. If anyone knows me they know I buy a travel mug from all the shops i visit no matter where I am. Not this time. My husband buys whole beans wherever he goes, but after trying to have a conversation with this same counter guy, he decided against it. Cool coffee shop - hipster ambiance, and chill DJ the day I visited. I ordered an iced Mexican mocha, which made me cough a ton because the spices kept getting stuck in my throat. The flavor was great, but there were just chunks of spices that made the drink almost impossible to finish. My friend ordered a cold brew, and she couldn't finish it either because it was so strong. Maybe we just picked the wrong drinks, but I wasn't super impressed with the coffee here (and the priciness). Good, huge space though and great for working or meeting up with a friend. read more

Where do I start?? First of all, you should know that I rarely take the time to do a Yelp review. So why now? Because------------I LOVE THIS PLACE.----------- I don't think you know good coffee until you come here. I can't even stomach Starbucks anymore because once you know how good coffee can be (I am speaking more specifically about Groundwork's lattes, because that is what I order), it is difficult to go back. (And I am not a coffee snob). When I brought my sister here from Seattle, she couldn't stop raving about her iced latte. Here is why I love this place (#3 and 4 are the main reasons): 1. free Wifi 2. eclectic Hollywood crowd (it runs the gammut--farmer's market people [on Sunday], business owners, cops, artists, writers, filmmakers, students, hipsters, sprinkled with the occasional homeless) 3. really good latte/coffee 4. great staff, most of whom are artists (i guess I should have listed this one first) 5. great place to write/meet up 6. good location 7. fun artwork on the walls (see other reviews for pics) What NOT to be picky about- 1. the bathroom (hey, they get a lot of traffic, so cut them some slack, the bathroom has been remodeled and is clean a majority of the time) 2. the noise (if you need a quiet place to meet, then don't choose Sunday during Hollywood Farmer's market time for example). I'd say 3 1/2 stars but I'll err on the side of the low end because, like most of these hip "rich wood furnishings & fancy menu terms" places, it's overpriced. I needed breakfast, badly, and this was the closest eatery open at 7AM near me. A quick perusal of the menu showed they had a breakfast burrito and coffee, the only two things I need to get my morning going right. Look, I like high quality ingredients as much as anyone else but does my burrito need "potato confit" or "Tillamook cheddar"? And meat isn't even a default option? This little beast came to $12 after adding in some bacon, which makes it nearly twice the price of any other breakfast burrito I've ever had. Throw in a cup of coffee and suddenly my "quick breakfast" sees me handing over most of an Andrew Jackson. Now, to be fair the burrito was tasty but once you start cramming a bunch of stuff into a tortilla the provenance of the ingredients becomes a little less important. Is the Tillamook-branded cheese adding an extra buck? I don't know but something like a breakfast burrito needs a price ceiling and $8 is pretty much it for me. This WAS a tasty burrito but it also didn't taste totally traditional; it tasted like a fancy-ass L.A. breakfast burrito. Good coffee, though. I finally decided to stop in after walking past Groundwork so many times. When I walked in, most of the tables were full and there was a long line waiting to order, which I took as a great sign. Luckily the line moved quickly and I was ordering in no time. To my surprise, they had a brunch menu that they served all day. I decided on the Chimichurri Eggs, which consisted of an avocado with two poached eggs, chimichurri sauce and mixed greens. Groundwork....not your average daily grind In a world filled with corporate coffee chains and fast-food operations now moonlighting as baristas we seem to get caught up on an inferior product for the sake of time and convenience while sacrificing taste. In contrast, Groundwork coffee understands that enjoying ones cup of java goes way beyond just the cup itself. Groundwork is a boutique coffee house sprouted throughout the city of Angeles; from Venice to Downtown LA with more locations on the horizon. In order to learn first hand about the company, I met with Robert Mozejewski, operations manager for Groundwork to discuss the history, principles and mission. The motto and slogan that sums up Groundwork is "Coffee, Tea, Community." This is displayed both inside and out of each cafe and on packaging. Groundwork's roasts and coffee blends provide a certified organic, fair trade, and kosher product to customers. Groundwork is socially responsible and has a green focused perspective. This is evident in the packaging that is used, composting program, and the recycle and discounted incentive programs. In addition to giving back to the enviornment, a community atmosphere and social interaction amongst patrons is of utmost importance to the Groundwork team. The Hollywood location offers a Friday night open mic night. They encourage baristas and guests to participate and showcase their other talents through music and art expression. During my visit I sampled a variety of coffee drinks as well as some popular lunch items. I started with two versions of the latte. The cold and hot vanilla lattes were prepared to perfection and i believe it is due to the fact, that Groundwork roasts their own beans at their own local off site facility which is in contrast to the macro-roasting that other purveyors utilize. This detail sets them apart from others and gives Groundwork coffee its unique fresh flavor. Private label options are available as well as custom blends and roasts for those who want to pass along the flavor to others. For my dining options I started with the Tuscan White Bean Soup. This home style version was full of flavor and was loaded with vegetables and Robert enlightened me to the fact that this soup as well as others are vegetarian. Truly vegetarian options are hard to come by and both you and your pocketbook will be happy with this one. Next, I sampled the Stuffed Chicken Breast. At first the dish looked small, but after getting halfway through I realized that the portion was quite generous and I was satisfied with its blend of flavors and fresh ingredients. Lastly, I tried the Roasted Vegetable Sandwich. This mouthwatering morsel was just right. With a plentiful amount of vegetables and the right amount of Sun dried tomato spread this sandwich provided another great "Meat-Free" alternative for all of you vegetarians out there. The texture was just right and could convince just about anyone to go vegetarian, even if it was just for one meal. On my next visit I plan to try the Proscuitto and fig sandwich. The food and beverages at Groundwork and its cafes are full of quality, flavorful and all menu items are reasonably priced. At the various establishments you will not be infiltrated by corporate campaigns, marketing materials and collateral instead it is all about the coffee, tea and community. Each location is hip and has an underground vibe that is translated through the artwork, music and media displayed throughout each store. I reactivated my Yelp account to write about this place. I moved to Los Angeles roughly a month ago from the San Francisco Bay Area. Triggered by a horrible case of home sickness, I decided to visit my favorite Bay Area staple; Amoeba Records. To my luck I got there a half hour early. I decided to cross the street in search of an amazing local coffee shop and as fate would have it, there was Groundwork. This place is absolutely phenomenal! An extremely laid back atmosphere inhabited by music junkies, trendy hipsters and local students. The coffee is exceptional. I've been working for P**t's Coffee for 4 years and have to say this is the best coffee I've ever had! This has been the only time I've never had to add sweetener or flavoring to my latte or coffee, solely for the purpose of savoring the natural flavors of this establishment. This is one of my go to coffee shops in LA. Although there isn't wifi that I know of, I can still manage to get work done here as there are expansive tables and plenty of food options (sweet and savory). Parking is a bit of a nightmare. If you're planning on staying for more than two hours, street parking won't suffice so I recommend parking in the parking structure adjacent to the Amoeba records near the farmer's market. I always order the vanilla latte as the syrup they use is really tasty with the coffee. I usually order the pear muffin which is unexpectedly moist and delicious and just a great pick me up. For savory options, I recommend the breakfast tacos as they offer a nice savory start to the day. read more

Groundworks works for me. It is not too fussy and so far I have not had any issues. I know some of the customers have mentioned getting "stinky eyes" or "funky face" from some of the baristas. Whenever I go there they are usually cool. Then again, when I do get the "funky face" it is usually from female emplyees someplace. Here it is the female customers who complain of the male employees giving them "stink eye". It must be an opposite sex thing. The only complaint that I have of them and other coffee joints is the saran -wrapped danish and other pastries. Whenever I see a danish with saran-wrapping it looks to me as if it has been smushed under someone's ass cheek and I imagine the barista going over and saying, " Excuse me, you're sitting on our apple danish." and then the customer saying, "Ooh child, I'm so sorry." as the danish is de-wedged and placed back on the counter. You would not want to eat that would you? The proprietors probably wonder why they don't sell vigorously. 'Cause they look like they've been smushed under someone's big, ol' booty! This is the first Groundwork Coffee location I've visited. I was recommended this spot by a friend, and as someone who's usually more into tea than coffee, this became an instant favorite. The ambiance here is modern and a little industrial. There's tables and seating of various types to choose from if you need to get some work done. This is a busy spot though, and it's not very big, so I'd recommend it more as a spot to share conversation as opposed to getting a lot of work done. The drinks here all seem to be fantastic. I've been able to have the Mexican Mocha and their Horchata Cold Brew. The Mexican Mocha is less sweet and bursting with spices. It's definitely not a mellow drink, it gives you a kick. The Horchata Cold Brew is very sweet, smooth and creamy. Service here is really quick and the baristas really know the menu and drinks really well. Along with Stumptown and Intelligentsia, this has become one of my favorite coffee spots in L.A. read more

I was literally just there. I was also there yesterday. I was also there the day before yesterday. And the day before that. I guess, what I'm trying to say, is that I go there a lot. Why? Because it's close. NOT (this tie is not black), because it's amazing in every way. The drinks are great, the atmosphere is enjoyable, the works are tolerable (just kidding, they rock) and there's free wifi! Strangely, I don't drink coffee so this is a review for the non-coffee coffee house goer. The alternatives are GREAT! Their black iced tea = A+. Chai latte's with almond milk = stellar (both cold and hot). Water = they have it!. That should about all the drink bases there. As for food, well I've ventured to try a few of their dishes. I've had the breakfast tacos, avocado toast, and breakfast burritos. Breakfast tacos are okay. Avocado toast is pretty good. Breakfast burrito: order this. It's very tasty and filling. I'm sure there's nothing disappointing. Keep in mind that the avocado toast is topped with corn and feta cheese. I HIGHLY recommend this place over other cafes in the area. For god sakes, don't order chai across the street at Philz coffee. You will not be pleased. I actually threw the drink away after one sip and walked across the street to Groundworks. read more

I'm giving this place 3 stars not because it's bad... it's just nothing special, in my opinion. The ambiance and patrons are what you'd expect from any old coffee shop (i.e. decorated with hip, cozy decor and occupied by hipsters with their laptops and/or Moleskin notebooks, business people stopping in for their afternoon brew, internet acquaintances meeting up for the first time {that's why I was there at least}). There is, however, one big communal table for friendly people looking to converse/invade personal space. I had to ask the cashier for recommendations because my taste buds seem to think the difference between all types of coffee are the varying degrees of bitterness (obvi I'm not the most qualified person to rate a coffee shop). Anyway, the cashier seemed a bit annoyed by my question. She was friendly until I asked, "Do you have any recommendations?" At that point, she averted her gaze and started organizing random stuff on the counter. "Fookin pleb," she thought. But what she actually said was, "Well... that depends on what you like." I'm not too picky with my coffee or tea, except I don't care much for fruit flavored or super sweet beverages. I told her I was fine with anything on the menu, though. After a mini-interrogation of my coffee preferences, the cashier helped me decide on an iced Americano because the other thing that I wanted (I forgot what it was... but it was supposedly really strong) wasn't in stock anymore. After about ten minutes, I received my drink and didn't bother to add milk/cream or sugar. I sipped it... and it tasted like any other bitter cup of coffee. read more

I really wanted to like their Huli huli bowl but unfortunately it was, no. The chicken was not edible. It tasted old and smelled weird, which ruined the rest, had to toss it. I did risk a tiny taste of the other ingredients, tasty. However hardly any vegetables WAY overpriced for what you get. It was sad looking when I opened the to go box!
