I'm reviewing only for the Mexican Mocha Latte - awesome. Seems like a good location, decent people who seem to care about coffee/espresso, and the cafe offers a broad selection of snacks and drinks. I had stopped in the other day - never before trying their drinks - just occasionally using their restroom ;) - but I had some time, and ordered an 8oz Mexican Mocha. It is the best Mocha using 'mexican' chocolate I've ever tasted. I've tried Mexican Mochas at many spots, and they mostly taste very milky or just plain gross. Sweet. Jesus. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE? I've been coming here for over half a decade, multiple times a week. I've loved it. The baristas know what they are doing (I miss you David), coffee is excellent, happy vibe and service has always been great. The last three times I came here my experience made me straight up sad. I will admit that my relationship with coffee is snobbish, but doesn't that make my assessment more valuable than the casual drinker? Groundwork, I discovered, was recently sold, and some of the new corporate policies instated range from alienating to locals to downright bizarre. Here is my most recent exchange with the soulless brown haired dysthymic Starbucks graduate female automaton cashier: Me: Hey! How are you? can I get a cappuccino? Cash me outside cashier: (Blank stare) What size? Me (internal reaction): Oh god, NO!!!!!!! The tell-tell sign of shit going south at a coffee shop. It used to be a given here that a cap is a 8 oz - many other places it's 6 oz. A latte is a 12 oz. Fuck. Last time the guy gave me a 16 oz latte with a double shot. I had to send it back. This isn't Starbucks. Wait. AM I AT STARBUCKS??? Me: Here's my reward card (that I've been using for half a decade). Ice Cold Cashier: We don't have that anymore. Me: Will you honor my accrued points? Cashier: (Blank stare) Sorry, we don't have that anymore. Me: Okay, don't I get a free drink with my bag of coffee? Cashier: We don't do that anymore either. You can now get a free drip or shot. Me: I'll pass. Do you still have boxed water? Cashier getting annoyed because I am annoying: I don't know what that is. I get my coffee - total garbage extraction - and head for the service station. There's no wooden stir sticks. Hmmmm... that's strange. All there is are these used spoons and an empty mason jar that says 'new spoons.' My god. Are they literally so cheap now that they have done away with wooden stir sticks???? Don't they know Hollywooders and tourists are incapable of following a mason jar reusable spoon situation system? And because this system is totally unsustainable given the traffic, what about cross contamination using used spoons if you're a vegan, or have an allergy? I ask the barista this. She tells me you have to now request a wooden stir stick. Uhhh... whose idiot idea was this? I elect to observe the failed policy unfold. I sit and watch people attempt to participate in this system. First, they search for stir sticks, and as I suspect, people do not participate in the reusable spoons like this is Sqirl or some other woke precious coffee bar in Echo Park. I notice almost everyone is either using a plastic straw or a plastic spoon to stir their coffee and then tossing them. That's expensive. It would have taken a total of ten minutes of watching this shit for the corporate consultants to understand the waste they were creating by instating this inane new system. Penny pinching pound foolish dummies. Okay, this place is dead. Go to Philz if you want corporate coffee. Go to Javista a few blocks up the street if you crave what this place used to be. This review isn't about the quality. I like groundwork. But, it's Friday night, and this yelp page says they close in 24 minutes and I'm standing out front and the lights are out and the doors are locked. Wifi is a good plus in this tiny little coffee shop in Hollywood. I came in before the farmers market and got a delicious avocado toast and almond milk latte. They also have fresh pressed juices and teas for the non coffee drinkers. I was able to plug in and charge my phone while enjoying the crowd. The barista recommended something and he assured me he would exchange it for something else if I did not like it. To be honest, I didn't really like it but I was JACKED on the caffeine so I didn't complain. If you never tried chai before, try it here because if you don't like it, they will give you a different coffee. They have communal tables and small tables for small groups as well. I can't say enough good things about the home made cashew milk, totally delicious in a cold brew and so flavorful without being too creamy. The food took WAY longer than expected and was a little pricey but that's Hollywood I suppose. Parking is a little rough due to the location, but there are a bunch of metered spots on the south side of Sunset if you're lucky enough to snag one! This is what a coffee shop should be like: friendly staff, chill ambiance and excellent coffee. I've been coming here for about 4 years and I've never once regretted my decision. Even when they are up to their neck in customers they still deliver good coffee and food. And about the food, it's very good. Had a great latte and the Totes McOats. The granola came pre-measured in a take-away container and they ask you what sort of milk you'd like (I chose almond). They then prepare it and add the fruit. Went on a Monday morning and it was full of people, but there were still several available seats and we were able to grab a 2 person table. I really enjoy the coffee and have friends who enjoy the pastries so I can definitely recommend that! The staff generally is nice so no complaints. My issue is with the breakfast burrito and menu description (on the board - when I visited, I did not see the white menus). It even seems that when looking at the pictures and the burrito descriptions on Yelp they make them differently. I preferred a breakfast burrito and if you look at the black menu description, peppers and onions aren't listed in the ingredients. If they were listed, I would not have ordered it. I paid $12 for the burrito with bacon (which is a high price but my friend really wanted to eat there) and the whole thing is basically all onion and peppers. It honestly did not taste good and I would not recommend paying for the meat because there was barely any in there. I opened the burrito, at a few bites of the spinach and threw the whole thing away since I couldn't get my money back. read more

Good place to get coffee if you're in the area. They have good coffee grounds that they serve up and it's a nice comfortable atmosphere here. Prices are reasonable for what you get for coffee drinks these days where I had an Americano for $2.75. It came in a small cup though but hey, waters pricey, right? Anyways, you can chill out here and do work on their tables inside and they have wifi. The only thing is parking, or lack thereof. Earlier today, when it was cold and rainy, I stopped by Groundwork Coffee to grab some java. When I was there a homeless man attempted to buy a cup of coffee but was short $0.95. I grabbed a dollar and tried to hand it to the guy at the register, but he refused to take my money and sent the man away. When the homeless man had left the coffee shop I told the guy at the register that I'd buy the coffee. The guy flat out refused to sell me a coffee and walked back into the kitchen and did not remerge until I was leaving. I'm still completely dumbstruck. Alright, maybe he didn't want the the guy in the coffee shop, but the fact that he wouldn't even let me buy it and take it out to the guy is just beyond me. I had been a genuine fan of this place...but when you work for a place you represent them. I can forgive having bad days and people being in bad moods, it happens. I can't forgive the fact that he was entirely cruel. I understand the location, I know what that might mean for the people who work there, what I'm upset about is that he refused me the ability to buy a cup of coffee that I could run out to the guy. Despite it's convenience I doubt I'll be walking in there any time soon. I know some of the people who work there are friendly, but that doesn't change what happened today. read more

It's nice to once in a while break the usual coffee shop routine and and see how your favorites match up to the competition. Groundwork wasn't anything to spill your sweetener over, but I would go back if I have the opportunity. I can't fault the location for being that crowded since it is located in a busy part of downtown La La Land. I can, however, fault the servers for their general unfriendliness and lackadaisical attitude towards helping customers. I ordered an iced tea based on their half-hearted recommendation, but when I didn't like it, they scoffed at me wanting to exchange it for another drink. Sorry, I said, but this is what you told me to get. Next, it took FOREVER to get my simple order of a bagle with cream cheese. The cook/chef/bagel prepper was nice enough to apologize for taking so long, but even then I was still getting dirty looks from the gruff counter girl. I'll chalk this one up to a bad day. Though the coffee will send you to straight heaven (and the coffee milkshake which I recently tried will send you into orgasm heaven), the food doesn't meet this standard really. Had the Egg McLovin. You know what, this is one of those places that holds up to its reputation and hype. The place serves up Damn. Good. Coffee. And the Chai aint bad either- I'm a die-heard Coffee Bean gal but I'll admit it can't compare. The vibe is also chill here.
