I had a very disappointing experience at Gulfstream Restaurant. From the moment we arrived, the host staff was unfriendly and dismissive. We were quoted an excessively long wait time with no explanation, no effort to accommodate, and honestly no basic level of customer service. The interaction felt rushed and indifferent, as if our business didn't matter at all. What makes this especially frustrating is that I've eaten at many of the Hillstone family restaurants from Northern California all the way down to Southern California, and this location was by far the worst experience I've had. Those restaurants are typically known for professionalism, consistency, and hospitality--none of which were present here. There are plenty of great dining options in Newport Beach, and unfortunately this one did not live up to the reputation of its brand or its location. We have been customers of Gulfstream for some time... years. I am not sure about the name. I think the Gulfstream is the blast of air that originates in the Gulf of Mexico and works its way east. I believe it affects weather patterns, the currents and airplane navigation. We used to love the arugula burger. Unfortunately, that is no longer on the menu. They do have a delicious cheeseburger that is absolutely delicious. They also have an amazing beef rib. Fries are all that and a bag of chips. The burgers are pricey but are legitimate portions of meat, fresh buns, and fresh ingredients. The beef ribs fall of the bone and are fantastic. I ordered the Trout. The Trout is a solid slab of fish. Fresh. The "Cajun" seasoning was meh. I think the seasoning sucks. I would prefer the fresh slab of trout with maybe just some lemon. I have been coming to Gulfstream for many years and believe it is an under-appreciated gem in Newport. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with homage to maritime, but never stuffy. While sometimes Gulfstream can command a wait, ample bar seating provides a good alternative. The service is really good, and I generally find the wait to get food prompt. Drinks wise, I have enjoyed wines, cocktails and beers here over the years and all are generally very good. This last time I had the Kolsch and the margarita and my wife had the margarita and a Sav Blanc. The margarita was good, though under shaken (still a bit warm), whereas the beer and the wine were great. My wife had the BBQ shrimp and I had the BBQ ribs. My wife reported the shrimp and rice were cooked beautifully, but the sauce was a bit vinegar forward. My BBQ sauce was a sweet heat and was tremendous on the fall off the bone ribs. The Cole slaw was crisp and a nice touch. Perhaps the most remarkable piece of Gulfstream is the price. Despite its location and decor, our meal was just over 125 for two and you could have easily taken out the margaritas and made it closer to 80. For the location, having really good food for 35/plate with some beer and wine is remarkable. Highly recommend. The fish sandwich was great, however could be better just as fish with side of coleslaw, the bun was not needed. Flavor was sweet fish had perfect fry and not too fishy taste. My parents recently tried this place out and immediately insisted on taking me when I got back in time. I don't say this often with their recommendations, but the hype was definitely well deserved! I cannot believe I've lived 10/15 mins away for all these years and haven't tried this place out sooner. The menu is very fish heavy, which I love, but could be limiting if you're not a fish fan. Even so, there are three types of sandwiches including a burger, two types of steak, and a half a chicken in the menu... so you definitely won't go hungry! We went with the house smoked salmon for the apps and I HIGHLY recommend you do too. This dish was my favorite... simple and incredible! For our entrees I went with the NOLA style shrimp, my mom got the trout, and my dad the fried shrimp, all of which were incredible. I particularly loved my dish because it was so light and full of flavor. Margs were our drink of choice since we had pre-gamed with tequila, but a lot of great options on the menu (definitely want to try the martini next time). Finally, the vibes were fantastic! This place really exceeded my expectations. I called ahead to make a reservation for 2, and sure enough, they were able to put me down for 6:30 pm on a Saturday. I called around 2pm. the same day. The parking was very easy, this place is in a big lot that shares with other local businesses. When we arrived, I told them we had a reservation and we were seated in less than 5 min. Once we got to our table it was very nice, low lights and very romantic and a great spot for our date night. Our server was very attentive and took our drink orders right away and also told us about the special they had. We ended up ordering oysters to start, which my wife said was very good. We then both got the ribeye, medium rare, and substituted the tomatoes with a different side. When the steaks came out, they had a melted butter on it, and it was seasoned very well. It had a very unique seasoning as it was a little sweet and savory. My steak was a little overdone, but my wife's steak was perfect. It was delicious. Trout Dip -- Still excellent. One of the few dishes that retains its distinct appeal and craftsmanship. Hot Fudge Sundae -- While still enjoyable, it seems to have changed since our last visit. The ice cream base now feels overly heavy and less flavorful, with an excess of creaminess that overwhelms the fudge. The hot fudge sauce remains good, but the magic of the earlier version is somewhat lost. Atmosphere -- The restaurant's serene ambiance was disrupted during our visit (10/26/2025) when a large, demanding party of 9 was seated on the patio. The staff handled the situation with professionalism -- particularly the manager who calmly enforced seating limits -- but it may have been wiser not to accommodate a group that clearly disturbed the otherwise refined tone of the afternoon. A man (possibly Eric?) stopped by to apologize for not getting the appetizer out before the meal. He said he would take it off the bill, but left it on instead. My sister wrote a message on the bill and we got a call from the manager (Eric) after leaving. I tried to return the call but couldn't get him on the line.
