Contrary to your initial impressions upon first glance. Gum Wah is not your average hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Oh no, dear readers--Gum Wah has been in Midlothian since the late 1950's! Their portion sizes are huge! Instead of getting egg rolls and crab rangoons we opted for the sampler which was around the same price when I brought it home I realized that--THE FOOD WENT ON FOR DAYS!!!! Before I get into the service issues, here is what I ordered: Shrimp Fried Rice-lrg Shrimp with some carrots and fried rice. No vegetable. Boring and lacked flavor Szechuan Beef-Spicy-half order Generous amounts of very tender beef. Considering I ordered spicy and being Szechuan. It tasted like pepper in egg fu young sauce. Twice Cooked Pork - half order 50 minutes after placing my order I was told they will not sell in a half order. I showed them the menu on their website and I told them they should get it changed. Canceled item and made the Szechuan Beef a large order. I called my order in and was told 20 minute it would ready. I showed up after 15 to make sure I got it hot! The wind chill was -4 at this time. When I walked in the store and cashier went in back and told my order was cooking. NP I took a seat. After waiting 25 minutes which is 40 minutes after I ordered I asked is going to be ready soon? 10 minutes later she returned after taking some orders from another phone. I was informed that the twice cooked pork is only available in a large order. This I addressed earlier in the review. Ten minutes later I get my order at full price not even an offering of a damn egg roll. My wife called and asked if I was driving to China to get the food. I went back into the restaurant and told the cashier that this is totally unacceptable. She responded that "Can't you see we are really busy!" Than don't tell me twenty minutes when it's and hour. It's probably 20 minutes for chop suey, fried rice, orange chicken, Kung po, and 6 egg rolls. I mention this because they walked in and ordered and left with their food in about twenty minutes. Maybe have the owner answer the phone or run the kitchen instead of being the busy boy. $17 lesson learned. Not pleased and telling everyone I know on FB. read more

Wow! I just wasted $20 on the worst sweet and sour chicken I have ever had! Sauce was like maple syrup with chunks of tomato in it. Chicken was over cooked. I ate about four bites and threw it out! The egg rolls were tasty but on the small side (cheap though, should have ordered more). The beef and tomato was yummy -- w/fresh chucks of peppers, tomatoes and onions in a delicious sauce. They were doing a great carry out business when we stopped in. The customer services was great. I am not sure why other folks are talking about. Bruce (the owner) could not have been nicer and provided exceptional customer service. Also, he was very friendly w/all of the carry out folks, taking specially care to accommodate a blind gentleman and his seeing-eye dog. Very touching. Ordered take-out for birthday celebration. Food was delicious. The fried wontons were crisp and not greasy. The chicken wings were also cooked to perfection. American Chop Suey is a unique dish, with beef and vegetables. They also dropped a generous bag of almond and fortune cookies in our order. Tried this place on a referral. The owner was very hospitable to me while I waited for my ordered. I ordered Mongolian Beef, Jumbo shrimp fried rice, and Crab Rangoon. The owner told me I would love the Crab Rangoon and he was spot on! I have not had any like ever! We've been living in the northwest suburbs for about 15 years and make an effort to dine at Gum Wah when we have a chance. I have been going here for over 20 years I love this place and I love the owner Bruce . His food is terrific . This is no Panda Express , if you want that junk then You don't want good Chinese food . The portions are big and the prices are fair. His pot stickers , crab Rangoon , won ton soup, shrimp or chicken cow, hunnan shrimp, shrimp and lobster sauce , egg rolls , oh hell everything is awesome . It's a diamond in the ruff . You would never know it was there and think the food was so good but, it is!!! Bruce remembers what we like and don't like in our food . Can't stand water crest and he knows that . My go to for Chinese! Bruce is awesome and each time is a great experience. I am especially partial to mushroom fried rice which is loaded with huge portions of mushrooms and the egg foo yong is the best. My family and I have been going here for over 30 years. Never a bad meal and the portions are huge always something leftover for the next day. Start with a crisp egg roll and go from there. Crab Rangoon is creamy sweet. My Favorite has always been the Sweet and Sour Chicken. I could eat that every day but now my blood sugar says no #sad. I ordered delivery from this place, and I think I got what I ordered...? When ordering mu shit, you expect a certain look,can certain taste, that's not what I received. The vegetables were not match stick cut and undercooked, and it had a very strange taste, like they used a sauce that was diluted with a ton of oil. The pancakes they sent me were not the traditional Chinese crepes style, but instead, they were soggy, gummy tortillas! Worst of all: no hoisin sauce!!!! Just more very watered down brown sauce literally poured on the bottom of the bag (the top of the container was dry, plus it was securely sealed, they definitely poured it in the bottom of the bag). They other dishes looked more like chop suey than chow mein... disappointing. We purchased soup and received saltine crackers with it....real authentic! Plus, I don't know why, but we received a ton of stuff we didn't order: almond cookies, 2 bags crispy noodles, and a large bag of Fortune cookies? The only thing I can think of is that someone had a similar order, and they gave that order to me. read more

We had szechwan chicken and kung pao chicken, the chicken was very fresh...funny that from other restaurants the chicken seems processed, but this you could tell was right off the bone! went there last nite with 3 other adults and 2 children..... while we all looked over the menu the watres came over and asked if we were ready/had any idea/ whatever....i said we would neeed a few more minutes.....she came back about 5 minutes later and well we were just not really ready, we were chatting an visiting an so on...she again asked if we were ready to order or if we knew anything about what we wanted...i asked her are you in a hurry? there was NO one else there....finally with that i just ordered some appitizers to make her happy and just go away.... ok now agan there were 4 adults and 2 kids...each adult was ordering their own meal plus we ordered 2 ( we wanted 3 orders of chicken fried rice ) she talked us out of it because she kept saying are you sure? thats a lot of food? do you really want all those meals? i mean WTF kind of watress tries to talk you OUT of buying and paying for food....she said the meals were big and came family style and there would be plenty for everyone....i told her i know what i want and thats that. i ordered spicey schezuen shrimp it was NOT spicey at all but i ddnt say anything becausei was with some out of town guests that i didnt knwo and i didnt want to appear to btchy but i did say to them it wasnt....my friend ordered spicey generals chicken it was disgustingly sweet and not the least bit spicey...and again nothing was said jsut beause i didnt want to cause a scene....and while we all dipped into each others meals to have a taste...i wouldnt say there was an enourmous amt of food and there was by far NOT enough chicken fried rice..... the egg rolls/soup and crab rangoon were ok...oh yea she was like are you sure you want 12 egg rolls? i bit my toung....i said YES ( there were 2 left over and only 1 crab rangoon) i dont know who the hell this woman thought she was but she by far was not a good watress ...i cant stand when ppl tellm e what i want.... Decided to try the General Tso's chicken from Gum Wah and it was disgusting. The sauce was extremely sweet, some of the chicken (which is fried in dough) was very tough and some of the pieces just had dough - no chicken! I called to speak with someone about possibly ordering something else and returning the General Tso's chicken and he would not allow it. I asked him what he does to appease customers who are not happy with the food and he told me, "I can't do anything about it and next time, order something else." So, not only did I get horrible food, I also got horrible customer service. I'll never go to Gum Wah again. read more
