I really want to give this place more stars because the food was really tasty, just the customer service was poor which interrupted my whole dining experience. It was pretty full on the night we went. We heard that there was only one chef in the kitchen making everyone's food. It was crowded so we probably waited an hour and some minutes for our meals to come. Our server wasn't the best either. We felt really ignored during our visit. We had to wait about 20 minutes after seating to get an appetizer (corn bread). On top of another 20 minutes to finally get some waters and other refreshments going. I had to grab anyone's attention who walked by us ( our server wasn't coming our direction) just to get the things we were asking for. The flavor of the food is the only thing that makes me want to try this place again. I think my lamb chops were cooked and seasoned perfectly. They were very tender. The mashed potatoes were the right texture, garlic flavor wasn't too overpowering and blended perfectly with the potatoes. I loved the yams. My meal was an overall 4/5. Service I would give a 0/5. I decided to take a chance on the place to celebrate my birthday.. once i mentioned the idea to a friend she spoke with the owner and I was informed that the owner of the place would "hook it up" for my birthday celebration. So Sunday Funday(supporting Black owned business BOB) turned a funday to a shun day! So you guys I have to preface my statement with letting you know that this was our second attempt at this restaurant( sigh). Attempt #2 walked in ready to enjoy a yummy soul food meal. It took 8 min to be received by the hostess. ( I'll tell you why later) Anyway after we were received we waited for 15min for a table. The hostess reassured us that a table was being prepared for us. Let me set the stage: Three people waiting for orders to go. Us! waiting to be seated. A couple walks in the door. They said hello to a gentleman who was attempting to seat people. He Immediately provided a table for them. ( even though the hostess informs him that we have been waiting) We stand up and address the rude and inconsiderate behavior that he just impacted on us. He stands their a lies to us to say, that he thought we we're waiting for our take out order. We shared with him no! We have been waiting for more than 15 min for a table.( as he was already told.) Needless to say, we didn't eat! We were just to done! Just flabbergasted! We can't believe the disrespect and poor customer service that we experienced; mot once but twice! Attempt #1 Never was received by the hostess. So we didn't eat! We try to patronize our black owned business but we continue to be disappointed by the hospitality and discourtesy treatment among these businesses. We are asking that you consider yourself as your own customers - as a guest in your home. Our money our time deserves the utmost respect. Show us that you appreciate us. Welcome us with love and provide the customer service and the experience that you want to have. So you probably want to know why it took 8 min to be received by the hostess. The vibes were good and the owner was very nice and welcoming which is why I give it 2 stars. They said we'd get 10% off our order but that in fact did not happen. The service itself though was not good. Our server forgot to bring us our drinks until we were almost done eating. The food is over priced and lacked flavor. The dishes are also small for the price. The garlic noodles had no flavor just an excessive amount of oil. The corn bread was okay, but it was burnt. The best thing we had was the asparagus it was a 10/10. Lived in Natomas for many years & never this gem existed! Husband and I came for the first time & felt like royalty being addressed as King & Queen. Loved the ambiance with multiple TVs l, clean restaurant and smooth music. Served the best warm, soft & slightly sweet cornbread I've ever eaten. Ordered fried lobster, which was huge & fried to perfection; nice portion of delicious gumbo wings and king and Queen gumbos. The gumbo was the best I've ever had in Sac or the Bay Area, served in large bowls and reminded me of the taste in New Orleans. We were so full that we had to get the rest of our gumbo to go. The music was great! Went in on a Sunday evening. So let me first say I'm appalled that I had to pay $19.95 for a bowl of Gumbo and had to pay extra to add shrimp or other seafood . That's ridiculous. Your gumbo should either come with or without seafood. To add crab it would have been an additional $30 plus the $19.95 for a bowl . Outrageous ! For a small hurricane like drink it was $18 it was tiny . I had the garlic noodle it was pretty good a little Al dente but it was good . Would have preferred fresh garlic then the canned minced . The crab had good flavor the cornbread was good . Greens were bagged . It baffles me that with just a little extra work get some fresh greens . Bagged greens always have stems all I at was a bowl of stems . Not happy no meat in greens . Appetizers I didn't understand them . I got the gumbo fries and gumbo chicken. Just roux no veggies in it onions bell pepper and garlic over chicken and fries not good . But the roux is decent and has good flavor . I just things the execution of some of the dishes were off . No oysters no raw oyster or cooked oysters . That was a disappointment . Please go to New Orleans and come back to Sacramento and do it right . 2 pots of gumbo one with seafood and one without. Your roux is delicious! Don't make your customers pay extra for seafood . I don't mind paying 20-25 for a decent bowl of gumbo with rice . If I come to gumbo king I want gumbo but I'm not paying $40 or more for a bowl that's just highway robbery . I purposely didn't review y'all when you guys first opened because you were having a lot of issues and growing pains & I wouldn't base my opinion on those preliminary impressions. It should all be a pretty well oiled machine by now. But AGAIN you guys are out of regular/staple items (like mac n cheese ‍) and our appetizer (supposedly, your most popular dish-gumbo wings which were just aiight) even though there were hardly any customers didn't come out until 30 mins after we had finished eating our entrees. And we ordered the wings well in advance of ordering our meals on purpose. At least your server was smart & gracious enough to not charge us for the "appetizer" we didn't receive (can't be an appetizer AFTER your main course) but sent us home with it anyway. Btw, 3 wings is your only option for a fried chicken dinner meal?? I told your server IKYFL! I'm really disappointed but my husband was mad. Gumbo was a basic heavy gravy, came out cold with cold rice. I HATE sending food back but I had to have them reheat the entire bowl. We ordered the gumbo wings at the same time. The gumbo came out within 10 minutes(cold) but we had to ask for our wings twice. I believe she forgot the order. It took 32 minutes to get out wings and when we got them the gumbo on top of the wings was COLD. My husband was livid and I was too through. Just give me the check and call it a night. I'm so glad we only ordered 1 bowl to share. Bowl of Gumbo + wings was $39... On another note the Queen and King welcome was okay once. But upon every encounter it gets a bit annoying, especially when a queen gets cold food. And just because I'm big on DEI, businesses should be cautious with how people identify as a King/Queen. Maybe I identity as a King or Princess?!? IJS. Maybe I'm just irritated that it was such a poor experience!!! Service was a 2/ 5. Didn't offer side plates but saw we were sharing a wing plate. So I'm supposed to use a napkin for these dripping sauced wings?! Make it make sense. And then you have the nerve to ask me to join the loyalty program...hummm that's a no. The ambiance is decent, it's clean. Bathroom was okay as well. I just really wish the kitchen staff took some training in food preparedness and proper temperature management. I've been to Gumbo King a handful of times and I've spent a good amount of money.The food and service was always fantastic!Loved being greeted as "Queen ." But this last time I only ordered some sweet noodles and cornbread (under $10)to go.The establishment only had one table seated and eventually another table was seated.After I put in my $10 order I was completely ignored!!I saw my order was up by the cook and patiently waited.Both waitresses were talking up a storm about personal stuff and totally ignoring my order that was up!I stared at them and waited for them to make eye contact(customer service) but not once did they even acknowledge me.I had to wait until another customer came in and one waitress finally turned around and said " welcome KING,I ll be with you shortly." My family came from the Bay Area just to eat at this place ..... after a two hour wait at their table with a 2 year old they were told the gas suddenly stopped working ( while customers were still getting served ). They didn't even offer to comp them for the inconvenience ( they had drinks ). Getting put out with a hungry baby is extremely disheartening and not to mention they had a long drive back home.What made it even worse they were featured on the local news representing our culture with multiple dishes the very next day. Customer service was cool from my experience, but I also only did a to go order because it was raining & i was ready to get home. Ambiance a cool laid back vibe. They have a bar you can sit at or tables. I ordered the catfish dinner with mac & cheese & greens & a cup of king's gumbo with the lunch special. Catfish was cool. Mac & cheese definitely the best I've tried so far in Sac. Greens spicy, but could be more flavorful. When I ordered a cup of gumbo, I was expecting a cup honestly. It came in a bowl instead & the portion size was great for $10. Only thing I didn't like was the actual sausage in the gumbo because it's a certain brand I prefer over others, but that's just personal preference. Really loved the chicken tho & will try it with shrimp next time since it didn't come with any seafood. I also think some type cornbread or dinner roll to come with the dinners would be good too like most places, unless it does & mine was just missed.
