Dear Hubby took a quick road trip up to the Bay Area a few weeks ago to visit a family member who was in a care center in San Jose. We got to see a number of his cousins, plus our grandson. The weekend was a blur of driving and activity, and then it was time to head back south toward home. We often stop in Santa Maria for gas. Before they shuttered, we ate at Cracker Barrel a number of times. In the same shopping plaza there's a Habit Burger. We decided to give them a try, have a meal, and decompress from the busy weekend for a short time. Ordering went smoothly. I miss their charbroiled cheeseburgers as I can't tolerate cow's milk cheese anymore. Just a plain burger isn't that interesting to me. Habit does have the option of grilled tuna, which is quite unique in the fast casual dining space. I wasn't that hungry, so opted for their chicken strips, and DH and I shared half and half fries and onion rings. Not the fanciest meal ever, but it was nice to relax together and enjoy decent quality food. Habit seems to source better quality ingredients than some other chain restaurants do. I like that they offer salads, but I wasn't in that mood either. The food was hot and fresh once our order was available and we had the dinner break we needed to push on to the rest of the trip home. You can order at the kiosk or wait in line - it's nice to have both options available since it can get pretty busy. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and the staff is friendly. This Habit Burger was located next to ATSU central coast's PA program in Santa Maria and had plenty of parking in the lot in front of the location. The service was really quick and the cashier was accommodating to our big group. The ambiance can be described as casual American, and there was lots of indoor seating - good for a few people or large groups. I got half sweet potato fries and half tempura green beens for a side and a veggie burger. I really enjoyed the sides, but the veggie burger was average in terms of flavor. It's been roughly one year since my last review of the Habit. Burger and Grill in Santa Maria and still this establishment is not getting a lot of Yelp review LOVE. Fortunately (for them)...we recently had another fabulous dining experience that started at the register with Yuri. Great Customer Service, quick and accurate with our order taking, a positive attitude...really appreciated Yuri's service. The restaurant was pretty busy, as usual. The accoutrements "bar" was neat and well stocked (nice). We ate "in" the main dining room and our table top was clean. The order to a minute to come up, but when it did the food looked really good. Best news...the food was really good! We ordered 2x Chicken Club Sandwiches (5/5 - just a great tasting sando), a Charburger (5/5 - nothin fancy but good tasting burger), an order of Tempura Green Beans (5/5...if you haven't tried these, do it, they're delicious) and a Coffee Shake (5/5...really nice "coffee flavor"). No complaints here, just an all around wonderful experience. We love the Habit chain for it's quality and value. However, the Santa Maria location consistently falls short of expectations. The fries are NEVER fresh, always lukewarm. They make them ahead; you can see multiple orders piled up, getting cold, waiting to go out with incoming orders. Last night, was the worst overall experience we've had, even though it was not at the height of the dinner rush. Tables in the restaurant were dirty, never cleaned for the next customers. The trash area at the entrance was overflowing with food spilled all over it. The floor of the restaurant was equally filthy. It took 20 minutes to get our food. When it arrived, it was disappointing, to say the least. Fries were cold. I requested a fresh order, only to receive another order of lukewarm ones. I gave up after that. The lettuce wrapped burger we ordered was overwhelmed by giant lettuce leaves. It looked like they tore leave off and just slapped the sandwich ingredients on top, a dripping mess with sauce coming out the bottom. Definitely not a wrap. Other Habits give customers a consistent high quality experience. The Santa Maria location just doesn't seem to be able to do that. It's a disappointment every time because of the way they handle their fries, but last night was the last straw. We often eat at Habit Burger in another town. We were very disappointed with our service and meal at this Santa Maria Habit Burger. First we had to wait 5 minutes at the counter before a worker acknowledged us and came to take our order.. there were approx 5 families in line behind us.. Walking up the the restaurant you call smell the wonderful fragrance of the grilling food! The menu was great and we could not decide from all the great choices. The cashier Viviana was very kind and personable with us asking if we knew this of that about our food. I ordered the teriyaki burger with white American cheese and onion rings. I really loved Habit Burger & Grill (formerly Hamburger Habit), and I used to eat there often. The burgers were thick and juicy, and the toppings were fresh. The burgers were thin-- definitely fast food burgers-- a step above McDonald's, but probably on a par with In-n-Out. I was disappointed! What really upset me was that they no longer have malts on the menu! Shakes, but no malts! Fries were OK. I rhetorically asked what the Hell happened, above, but I know EXACTLY what happened! Wendy's happened! This is their business model! They buy a fabulous, thriving chain of restaurants that some entrepreneur put their heart and soul into creating and building, and they ride the chain's reputation for as long as they can, while they gradually cut costs and quality to drive up profits, until the customers notice and start leaving in droves. The food here is pretty good for the most part. I LOVED the mocha shake, the fries and the onion rings are great, the burger was good but nothing to write home about. I tried the sweet potato fries and to be honest I didn't think they were that good. And I think my favorite entree I've had in terms of taste was the chicken club. It was very yummy! Also the service was excellent, and the decor is very nice. The pepper bar is a nice touch. So you might be asking why I am only giving three stars then? Simply because the portions, especially when it came to the chicken club, are pretty small in my opinion and not worth the price. This place is expensive. And I mean, yeah, I know, every fast food place is expensive these days. But this place is a bit more than average, and for the small portion sizes you get, I just can't in good conscience recommend going here over some other places I've been to and I simply cannot put them on the same level ratings-wise. I only recently discovered this place, so I don't know whether it's always been this way or if it is yet another casualty of the shrinkflation that has dominated the food industry in recent years, but I just know that I am tired of paying such exorbitant amounts of money on fast food and not even getting a meal that actually fills me up out of it. I did read on the chain's Wikipedia page that it was acquired by a multi-national fast food conglomerate in 2020, one that is also the parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, and if I had to guess, it was probably a better company before that and might have had more generous portion sizes before then. Large corporations ruin everything they touch. Ever since the Reagan administration under its Heritage Foundation puppet masters facilitated the corporate takeover of America with its many anti-consumer policies and BS "trickle-down economics" scheme, corporations have done nothing but employ business practices that are aimed solely at appeasing shareholders and making line on graph go up and up at all costs, to the detriment of the consumer AND the employees alike. We, the regular people, are not really the customers of large corporations anymore. Making us happy is not what their goal is. They exist solely to serve the shareholders and that's it. So if the price of fast food is going to be as ridiculous as it has gotten to be today, and especially if portion sizes are going down at the same time, I would rather spend my money at places that are locally and privately owned, so that my patronage can at least go back into the community instead of just ending up being a blip on the quarterly earnings report for some bigwigs sitting around a $10,000 desk in some boardroom halfway across the country. read more

The Habit is one my favorite places to have lunch when I'm working and I normally get the BBQ chicken salad which I highly recommend. We were heading out of town so decided to stop for family dinner. Diner is very clean and COVID friendly. We appreciated that they have heaters on the outside patio for those waiting for their food to go. I realize many people have dined at The Habit and know how fresh their food is and it is cooked to order. Maybe not there fries but everything else ;) I wanted to highlight their kids meal. They had several items to choose from (chicken tenders, grilled cheese, a burger and something else but I don't recall). We ordered the chicken tenders. They offer a healthy side or a side of fries. They offer chocolate milk, apple juice or a foundation drink! WHHAAAT..I love that parents have options. In addition, my picky kid loved the breaded chicken tenders. They were breast meat and pretty tasty. The kids meal also comes with a small treat (gummi burger) and reasonably priced. Today was my second and last 7+ mile car trip to The Habit for the primary purpose of getting a coffee milkshake, my favorite flavor of shake. And once again, the Habit just couldn't get it up to provide this simple product. The first time none of the staff could be bothered to turn on the soft serve machine so I guess nobody got a milkshake during that lunch period. Hopefully someone got around to turning it on for the dinner rush. Today, they told me they didn't have the coffee to make a coffee milkshake. It's the primary reason I travel the 7+ miles from my home as the Habit is only one of two restaurants in town that sells a coffee flavored milkshake. The other one is Natural Cafe's espresso shake with real ice cream. Frankly, theirs is better but I like the cheeseburgers at the Habit. Good thing it's not the only cheeseburger place in town. I give up. With the price of gas and my precious time, the inconsistency of the Santa Maria Habit Burger Grill's product availability precludes my ever setting foot in this restaurant again. read more

Happy to have a new place open up in Santa Maria. The town defiantly needs more new places to eat. Habit is new and so everyone wants to try it. Keep that in mind when you go. It won't always be this busy just like all of the other new places that opened before it. Employees are great, helpful and friendly. They know why they are selling and can answers questions that are being asked. There is always one person, sometimes two walking around wiping down tables or offering to take your trash from you. As of now, the Habit website does not list Santa Maria on their site. Hopefully soon and then locals can join the Charclub. The restaurant itself is very clean and inviting. Lots of windows and natural light, and has a fun surfing theme. This location also has an outdoor patio for additional seating. The food is fresh and the portions are a good size, not to much and not to little. They have options for everyone from no meat, to chicken sandwiches, burgers and even chicken strips on the lids menu. Defiantly worth a try. read more
