This is some of the best sushi I've had in years. There's something very personal and almost homemade about their combinations. The fish was fresh, but all the little side ingredients and personal recipes were what made the experience. I had a lunch tempura roll that was like 7 dollars and came with a side salad and miso. I ate the entire side salad and wanted to drink the dressing left in the bottom of the bowl. I couldn't figure out what I was tasting. It was like apple and squash pureed with ginger, and a dashing of creme fraiche as garnish? Very interesting, light, and delicious. And it was very affordable. Went in at 6:30pm... Hostess/waitress was in a bad mood I guess, sat me in the corner near the door but that's fine. She seemed upset to have to deal with me. Menu looked great! But I sat there for over 5 minutes with no waiter and no hint that anyone cared I was there other than the nice bus boy who brought me water. Maybe I'll come back and try them some other day. This place is a complete disaster! I don't understand how people in the suburb of Chicago could give this place 4 or 5 stars! Have you not tried real sushi before? First of all, the food is absolutely ghastly! The fish is not fresh. The color and texture of fish looks and tastes 3 day old: stale and rubbery. The ramen is worse than the instant noodle shin ramen I made in a hurry; secondly, the place is small, unlit and disorganized. For the service, the girl who serviced us was actually very nice, but the Korean owner/chef lady was crazy. She came out of kitchen with her apron on and hovered over us without a word while we are eating and talking. She look dirty and unprofessional. We were baffled and very uncomfortable! Worst of all, she was really nasty with the waitress. I think one of the dishes comes with a free California roll. Somehow the owner thought the girl made a mistake and went back to the register to check and then called the waitress to her after she hovered over our table. They had a argument. The restaurant is so small, I could literally here her yelling at the girl. After a while the younger Korean guy (maybe her son) got involved and I believe the waitress eventually proved she was right. Yet, the owner lady was still mad with her and did not stop complained to the young man... That was such an unpleasant experience! I would never go back there!! read more

Best. Sushi. In. The. Burbs. I lived in Chicago for over 11 years. The sushi in Chicago is exceptional and one of the worst parts of moving up to Wheeling was leaving all of those wonderful options behind. While it is true that I could always head down to the city for sushi, it's a hassle. When we first moved out here, our weekly craving was met with disappointment after disappointment as every place we found out here was less than stellar. My wife was out of town for business and we chatted about places for her to eat while away and the conversation turned to sushi. This led to cravings and I decided to drop by last night to give Hakuya a shot. This place is in a strip mall next to Dengeo's, but never judge a book by the cover. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the sushi chefs (one of whom is an owner) and it felt like a family place. I ordered some food to go and the waiter talked to me about specials and how we heard about them. My food was carefully prepared and I took it home, eager to try. Let me say this: the sashimi was wonderful and tasted fresh and delicate, as if it had just been taken off a fresh fish. The rolls were also delicious. I'm a spicy tuna roll guy and their's was exactly how I like it - just spicy enough to be exciting without being overbearing. I highly recommend Hakuya. If we want good places like this to survive, it's up to us, people. We need to support local businesses like Hakuya and reward them for their excellence. This place is a gem. I will be back. Honestly the best sushi in the Northwest Suburbs with AMAZING lunch specials. The ingredients are of very high quality. I went here based on the positive reviews but I was considerably less than impressed. I ordered the sashimi platter for pickup (it was being wrapped up as I arrived, and I ate it within 5min of picking it up). The fish was soggy and lacked flavor. The color was slightly off too, but the smell wasn't bad so I still ate it (I'm hoping I don't get sick). The wasabi was watery and tasted like it was the processed, store-bought variety, and even the shredded daikon was soggy and tasteless, as though it had been sitting in a cooler inside an airtight Tupperware container for a few days. Considering the large number of positive reviews and the fact that the total price for my platter was about $30, I expected much better. I was very disappointed by Hakuya Sushi. The only positive things I can say about this place are that my order was prepared fast, and the young woman who greeted me and brought me my order was very friendly. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Side note: It's unfortunate that my first ever Yelp review is an extremely negative one, but I felt it was important to let others know that despite the positive reviews Hakuya has, this is a place to avoid. read more

Everything was great. We were here with a group celebrating a birthday. The chef greeted us and was very friendly and helpful. We tried the rolls and a few single-piece sushi. Everything was top-notch and at least as good as any sushi place in the city and much cheaper considering the amount of freebies they provide: miso soup, salad with a nice ginger dressing, fried rice balls, and even the fruit-infused water some places would charge for. All of the food was fresh and delicious and the plating arrangements were very artful. Since this was a birthday, we also got the traditional complimentary dessert, but this was way beyond what other places typically offer - a huge piece of vanilla cheese cake with a large scoop of ice cream for the guest of honor AND two pieces of pumpkin cheesecake for the rest of us, both including a fancy caramel candy piece. This restaurant is a gem in buffalo grove. The owner-chef, Chuck, is a very friendly and funny guy. He always welcomes the customer and shows his willingness to serve us as best as he can. All rolls and sushis are great both in taste and looking. Sashimi is also very fresh. What you can expect more here is Korean foods, like Spicy noodle and Bibimbop. I'm not even sure how to describe how good the food is here. I'm literally speechless. This nondescript, hidden gem is in the middle of suburbia, nestled in one of a thousand little strip malls that decorate this area. At first glance, you would think you've discovered YASR (yet another sushi restaurant), however you would be mistaken. From the moment we walked In the door, we were warmly greeted by the staff and chef, then promptly seated. Within 2 minutes we had our drinks and were reviewing the menu. We started our culinary adventure with the complimentary "monster balls" and miso soup, followed by a delightful, orangish tasting salad (again complimentary). We ordered the main sashimi 15pc and "valentine rolls" which my wife and I split between the two of us. The sashimi was fresh, and tasty but the valentine rolls almost brought tears to my eyes. We ordered another plate of rolls to take home for lunch the next day......yes they were that good. My advice to anyone considering eating here, lay off the soy sauce until you've actually eaten a few pieces of the fresh as it gets sashimi, you really don't need it. read more

No offense, but I should know better than trusting midwesterners reviews about good sushi places. My experience here was mediocre at best. This Chuck guy must have been on vacation or something. I asked the waitress to bring the two best rolls they had and they both have shrimp tempura in them...Really? I just took her word for it without looking, and when it arrived it tasted like I ordered two of the same thing. I don't understand teriyaki sauce on sushi; good fish doesn't need overpowering teriyaki sauce to drown the (lack of) taste. Can you believe that you can have top quality sushi that you can only find in very expensive sushi restaurant in Japan somewhere in the Midwest? I was shocked (in a good way) by the dishes I had in Hakuya and felt compelled to write a review. This is my first restaurant review and might be the last. The food was that good to make me write a review. My family had salmon, white tuna, eel, and tuna sushi and some rolls. I have been to Japan many times and have tried sushi in wide varieties. Some of them were just a dollar per piece and others are few hundred dollars per person. So I know what the best sushi should be from my experiences. The sushi that I had in Hakuya was the best in my staying in US for nearly 20 years. And it was just a 'Lunch Special'. The rolls we had was 'Ricky's Roll' (I hope I remember the name right) and it was also the best rolls we had. My wife and daughter also agreed that this was the best sushi they ever had. The chef, Chuck was a very kind and considerate person and he didn't mind answering all our questions including some personal ones. My wife and daughter chose that salmon sushi was the best, and I was really impressed by the eel sushi. This sounds a little bit awkward, but I have never had that much creamy eel sushi anywhere else. It was that soft and rich in flavor. Of course, white tuna and tuna were all great. Was I just lucky to choose a good day in that restaurant? Maybe.. Because I visited Hakuya only once. Will I drive 3 hours just to try sushi in Hakuya? Passionate YES!!!! My family is still talking about the sushi and the rolls we had there. My only gripe is that Hakuya does not serve soup based Japanese dish such as Udon (Japanese noodle). But if the restaurant has the best sushi in the Midwest, you would forgive them for not having every Japanese dish you want. Here is my one tip for you. If you drive to Hakuya by using a GPS car navigation system, you should make sure that it points out the restaurant located near the intersection of Dundee Road and Buffalo Groove Road. It might take you to the place in junction of Dundee and Alrington Heights Road if you give the address of Hakuya to the GPS. I might update this review if I feel different in the next visit. Until then, Hakuya is the best sushi restaurant in the entire Midwest for my family. My mouth was watering while I was writing this review, and I can't wait to go there again. read more

This isn't a review of the food but of their operation. Spent some time on Grub Hub choosing food for dinner and was looking forward to some good sushi per the reviews on Yelp. Hit the button to place the order and it said the restaurant was closing soon so I could not place my order. It was only 6:00pm and their website said they were open much later. I called to confirm they were closing and they said yes. Assumed it was something unforseen and I would try again some other time. Went out to pick up food from somewhere else and drove by this restaurant and it was defiantly open and I saw people in there. Why would they turn down my order and lie??? A great place for sushi! I'm really picky about my fish, and I have absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food here. The service was fabulous - everyone was so nice to us, and our server was very good about checking on us regularly to refill drinks and make sure everything was okay. We were given a complimentary appetizer by the chef - which was delicious - and both of their chefs came to our table to make sure everything was just right. The presentation is wonderful, and so important to the restaurant that one of the chefs came to turn my boyfriend's plate to the proper direction, so the candle on the plate was farther away from him. And when we ordered dessert, our server decorated our plate with hearts drawn from syrup, just because she'd figured out we were dating. That kind of individual attention and insistence on detail is something I haven't seen in a restaurant for a very long time. We will absolutely be going back to support this new business, because I would be very sad to see it close! It's a really great place. read more

I discovered Chef Chuck's Awesome-ness about a year ago and it is a must at least once a week! Even my no ketchup-no mustard- plain hotdog eating husband LOVES Hakuya! We had a sushi craving on a Monday (when Hakuya is closed) and went elsewhere and my husband literally told me he refuses to go anywhere! The food is amazing our favorite is the Abigail Roll and the Super Crunch Roll but everything is amazing. The customer service has always been more than exceptional and Chef Chuck is a very nice man.
