an amazing gem in pike place, with an amazing happy hour from 3-6 daily. we came for the oysters that are $2, we had the hama hama ones, which were delightful, they tasted fresh and were smooth and i would even say creamy. the roasted oysters were also good, tastes kind of like a mac and cheese with breadcrumbs. the fries were also amazing, salted and fried perfectly and the star of the dish is the mignonette mayo, which is so unique, had to dip our burger in it too! also really enjoyed the burger! half off during happy hour and definitely worth it! just a good classic burger, juicy, came with a cornichon pickle and pickled pepper. also not too busy even on a saturday afternoon! great spot, with indoor and outdoor seating! read more

The food was definitely not what we expected from a Tom Douglas restaurant. Ordered the smoked cod (we were surprised by the ritz crackers it came with) it was just ok. The clams were presented on focaccia which soaked up all the juice and leaving them on the dry side. The shrimp nuggets came in a patty and were mediocre at best. The only thing that was worth anything were the potato rolls. Our server was very pleasant. Dirty martini was good. We shocked that the bar was out of Pilsner and Rainier on Friday night. We don't go out very often and we're really looking forward to the delicious food Tom Douglas is known for. This didn't not match our previous experiences at his other restaurants. Definitely not worth the 150.00 bill. Update. The team at Half Shell have been great at following up. Definitely worth another visit. read more

Stopped in during happy hour and sat a the bar. Bartender was friendly and helpful....I ended up ordering a bunch of random happy hour items (I couldn't make up my mind & it all sounded good). The Bartender handed it like a champ and didn't make me feel like I was a total pain. On to the food!! My drink was a dirty martini and made to perfection. I had 6 fresh Oyster which were fresh and amazing. Two baked oysters - great flavor and yummy. A shrimp slider - a must have!! It's like a chicken sandwhich but 1000x better - amazing!! And a side of fries which were great! Would absolutely go again!! read more

Stopped by for some happy hour oysters! The day I came they had the Fanny bay oysters which were delicious. I tried two other varieties which I forgot the names of but they were good as well. Pretty fresh. I wish the mignonette had more shallots! Service was fine. read more

Stopped in for a bite,, early so not yet busy. Grabbed a bar seat, greated by the two bartenders. Ordered the crab roll and caesar Brussels. Food came quickly and there was plenty of it! The best reason to come here is the happy hour oysters--fresh, delicious, and a fantastic deal. From the regular menu, the wedge salad tasted good but felt overpriced. The burger was solid and the steak fries were great. Service was on the slow side. Our waiter reminded other tables before happy hour ended but skipped ours, which felt odd. When my burger arrived, it had a pepper toothpicked on top. I'm allergic, so I asked for a fresh bun top, but was told, "Just take it off, you'll be fine." A quick swap would've solved it. Instead, I just ate the burger without the bun--it was still tasty, but the response was disappointing. That said, the food was good, the view is cool, and the vibe inside is great. We walked in and were warmly greeted, which started things off on a good note. Once seated, our server enthusiastically raved about nearly everything on the menu, which got us excited to try a few of the highlights. We started with the Martini Dip, which she described as "ridiculously good," but unfortunately it fell flat and surprisingly bland for something with such a unique concept. Next, we had a cheeseburger; it wasn't bad by any means, but there was nothing memorable about it either, just an average, no-frills burger. Lastly, we tried the Ginger Shrimp Nugget Sliders, which were hyped up as phenomenal but turned out to be quite underwhelming and forgettable. Service was mediocre; our server didn't check back to ask how everything was or offer drink refills, we had to flag her down ourselves. All in all, I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, and I wouldn't recommend it if you're expecting something special. There are plenty of other spots in Seattle that deliver more flavor and better service. read more

I so wanted to give a 4-star review; the location and ambiance is great, prices are fair for the food quality, when prepared as ordered. This brings me to the service... I had ordered the sockeye salmon as medium-rare, which was the chef recommended and what I enjoy, but what I received was WAY over cooked and chewy (not enjoyable at all). Our server NEVER came back to check on us for me to inquire about the temperature! It was not until after the check had been paid I was able to ask about the temperature and it turns out the order was entered wrong. The server seemed confused as to why I didn't say anything until I pointed out I never had the chance to. The only compensation offered was a dessert, but this was pointless as we were leaving and no way to receive a take away dish with us. Again, I really wanted to give a 4-star - but the overcooked entree was just too disappointing. read more

My cousin from Louisiana and I, from Everett, WA, were spending a day at the Pike Street Market. Even though we had a 7PM dinner reservation at the new Tom Douglas restaurant "Half Shell", we decided to take advantage of the $2.00 fresh oysters at "Half Shell". We delayed any other lunch, sat at the outside dining At "Half Shell" at 2PM and enjoyed a marvelous experience that included a wonderful wait person, lovely glass of wine, and splendid raw oysters with a beautiful icy mignonette sauce and the mini Dungeness crab roll. As we spent the rest of the day at the market, we looked forward to dinner at the "Half Shell" with a friend who works at a major hotel in the Seattle downtown area. My Louisiana cousin ordered the salmon and was absolutely delighted with her meal. As I was not terribly hungry, I ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes with Dungeness crab remoulade. It is difficult for me to state that this item was disappointing. The tomatoes were barely green as they had obviously been picked at least one to two weeks early and they were hard as rocks. The sauce was disappointing mainly because the tomatoes were way too raw. It was surprising that the cook didn't remove them from the menu realizing that the tomatoes were not ready to serve. My friend who joined us for dinner was looking for a large salad and the only one offered did not appeal to her. Therefore she ordered a rather strange dinner of side dishes which apparently did not thrill her. While my cousin was absolutely thrilled with her dinner, I found the meal definitely wanting. I see that restaurants - at least in Seattle - no longer have bussers. Therefore service is not quite the same - not bad at all but not so wonderful either. I would like to see a dinner menu rewrite. Obviously Tom Douglas knows how to run wonderful restaurants however this one needs some work. Staff were very nice and service was as much as they had time to give, While Tom Douglas knows how to run excellent restaurants, we believe this one could use some rethinking of the dinner menu as well as more training for the Chef to learn when to determine that the product is not ready for use. i Feel certain that this Restaurant will become a favorite destination in the future. . read more

We wanted to watch the sunset at the overlook park and get dinner beforehand, so thought this spot would be perfect. We were celebrating our 6 year wedding anniversary, which we mentioned in our reservation but no one acknowledged this. The server took our order quickly, but that was the only good thing about the service. Maybe we ordered too much food (2 sets of oysters, clams and 2 entrees), but it took 40 minutes to get the oysters and then a long delay in getting the clams and another long delay in getting our entrees. Some folks (especially a big group) that were seated way after us got their small plates AND entree before all of our food came out. They also took our silverware while removing our small plates so we had to ask for a new one, and they didn't even apologize. The server only checked on us once in the whole 1.5 hours we were there which was disappointing. The food was solid but for over $200 for 2 people and the lackluster service, we certainly won't be back. read more

Do not order the crab roll here! I went last week and took one to-go and first off, there was half the amount of crab I am used to it in a roll ( I usually go to Market, located next to Seattle Art Museum, but it was closed, so I decided to give this place a try). Not only was it a very small portion of crab, it was super bland, the bread was mediocre AND there were three pieces of shell! Unacceptable! I subbed the fries for a salad, so my total was $55. Was still hungry and in shock at how bad my experience was, especially considering all the good reviews. read more

We got there right before 3:00 and there was a line so I suggest making a reservation if you can. The service is friendly and the oysters were delicious!! The drinks, however, were not. My bf and I got the cheeseburger from the happy hour menu and it was very good as well. read more

There is a caveat though, which is that they only have select items in the AYCE menu. The ambiance of the place was inviting enough for us to give them a try! There is a 90 minute window for AYCE, and you can order a maximum of 3 items per person every 15 minutes. All orders have to be made from an app on your phone so make sure you have a fully charged device! When we logged in the app, it was confusing to manage at first so we worked with the server to put our orders in. She had to put in our orders for us a couple of times and then we figured out how to work the system after that. To do the math for those reading the review and maximize the number of items you can order with the 90 minute window, you can potentially order up to 18 sets of skewers per person. Each set of skewer has two sticks. My hubby and I missed a few items from our order but we were getting full after my 10th skewer and his 15th skewer so it did not matter too much! Oftentimes when a restaurant adds a flat 20% gratuity, you get the feeling this is not passed on to the servers. Not so here. He explained that it's shared among the servers, bar, and other staff, with only a bit retained by management, but even that finds its way into their wages. Terrific work environment and happy to see it. It definitely shows in the level of service. But we're here to eat. Didn't take a picture, but one of my dining companions ordered the burrito with red chili sauce and it was very good. Just the right amount of heat in the sauce. The Cantina celebrates Taco Tuesday, so I took advantage of this. You get the opportunity to try 5 different street tacos for the low price of $15. For another $4 you order it fully loaded which is a steal (guac, pickled onions, lettuce, giardano, crema, and another lovely sauce). Each of the tacos were really delicious and packed full of flavor. I especially enjoyed the cauliflower and the beef. Was surprised how much I liked the popcorn chicken - still juicy and not greasy in the least. Andrew treated us to a round of the hatch green chili. I was delighted because it was a dish I wanted to try. He described it perfectly: a little kick, but you can't stop eating it. He was right. A bowl of this in the winter with their cornbread (which I'm confident will be delicious) will preempt a winter cold. The sauces on the table are not to be ignored either. The green chili sauce was fruity with a little heat, the scorpion chili brings the heat, but their homemade chili oil is phenomenal. I could put this on everything. In short, the Cantina delivers. Excellent food, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and fun staff, and a cool vibe. I'll bet the cocktails will also be good. Definitely adding to the regular rotation!

Beautiful restaurant with delicious food, but be prepared for a wait. My boyfriend and I were thrilled to find a spot with daily oyster happy hours. We went on a Saturday, and although the place was semi-busy, we managed to get a table without a reservation. The staff was extremely friendly, but it took some time to get our order taken. We ordered a dozen oysters, four roasted oysters, the Painted Hills burger, hand-cut fries, and two drinks. Our first round of oysters arrived about 10 minutes after ordering, and we quickly devoured all 12 in under 5 minutes. After waiting another 15 minutes, our waitress checked in to see if we needed anything else. Confused, since we were still waiting for the rest of our food, we ordered another round of oysters. Another 15 minutes went by before our waitress returned to apologize and explain that a surge in oyster orders had delayed ours, but assured us they would arrive shortly. Concerned, I inquired about our original order. She looked puzzled and went to check with the kitchen. A few minutes later, she returned with a cheeseburger and fries, only to inform us that our order receipt had been lost and the kitchen was remaking our food. She then delivered the burger and fries to a table seated after us. We were seated at 4:58 PM and didn't receive the rest of our order until 5:56 PM. Had we not checked in, who knows how much longer we would have waited. When our burger finally arrived, it was phenomenal, and I highly recommend it. The fries, although a bit thick, were crispy and good. The roasted oysters were also delicious. Overall, the menu is fantastic, and this could have been a 5-star experience, but the nearly hour-long wait without realizing we hadn't received most of our food was disappointing. Came in for a quick snack for happy hour and I was not disappointed! The oysters were terrific. I enjoyed a half dozen blue pool oysters on the half shell, each on the small to medium size with a slightly sweet finish. Loved the clean flavors, nothing fishy about them at all. I hadn't had mignonette sauce prior to this, and I found it paired quite nicely with these oysters. I also had a slightly meatier more umami baked oyster and it was delicious! I wish I had a second stomach to fit more of these in. The miso butter left wonderfully unctuous notes and pulled together the flavors from the bacon and chives. I recently dined at Half Shell in Seattle, and I can confidently say it was one of the best dining experiences I've had. The oysters were phenomenal--so fresh and delicious that I ended up eating 18 pieces! Every dish we ordered was delightful, showcasing incredible flavors and quality. Our server, Junior, was superb!
